    Brussel sprouts

There is a lot of potential at this newer spot on Beaver Island. It's a casual, covered patio, which is perfect for a summer night. The food was just good, not great. The peppers were tasty, but unfortunately the entrees were pretty bland. The Caesar salad lacked flavor as did the pork tacos. The brussel sprouts were also a nice option, but it just was not enough to carry the day.

We were looking for a place for dinner that was open a little later on Sunday on Grand Island. We noticed many places were either closed on Sundays or closed early. The V'Randa was open until 10pm (with the kitchen closing at 9pm). We are SO glad we found this place!!! The V'Randa is at the end of Beaver Island State Park. The state park entrance wasn't manned so we just drove right in (no charge). There's a huge parking lot next to the restaurant. While we didn't go there ourselves, you can walk down to the water from the parking lot pretty easily. Seating is all on a covered outdoor patio, overlooking the water, even the bar (which is where we sat). It was relatively late in the evening (around 8:30pm) so we walked right in and straight to the bar. The staff was super friendly and attentive. We ordered the brussels sprouts to start, the special poutine burger (medium) and the special grilled filet (rare), all of which was at the recommendation of the staff when we asked them. The food came out quickly and the flavors were phenomenal - these recommendations were spot on! The brussels sprouts are charred with korean chili sauce, cashews, pickled banana peppers, fresh cilantro and fresh basil. It was a flavor bomb that did not disappoint and the portion was perfect to share for two people. B especially loved the fact that they used pickled banana peppers instead of a lime wedge - it made the flavors really unique. The special poutine burger was quite delicious and satisfied B (who is Canadian and is always on the lookout for poutine since we can't get it where we live). The burger itself is grilled and is served on a brioche bun. The gravy was super flavorful and the fries were both well-seasoned and super crispy - a great texture next to that saucy burger. The special grilled filet was the BEST in my opinion. The steak (served sliced) was cooked perfectly (I ordered rare) with grill marks on the outside. I could cut the meat with my fork, it was so tender. It was served with a demi glace on top of this phenomenal truffled mushroom risotto. The truffle wasn't too overpowering and there were huge pieces (some whole) of a variety of mushrooms. This is one of the best risottos I've ever had. Served with a side of grilled asparagus. Service was great. We probably would have ordered dessert but we were way too full from our entrees (we came home with leftovers too). Overall, we highly recommend this new restaurant! Thank you for a fantastic dinner, Luke and Chef Peter!

They do have a dart board, but it doesn't let you select more than 1 player, so that was super disappointing and a waste of money. But hysterical! They have one of those electronic game things in a little computer screen, we played the memory game (Terrible Two and Core Four) & made the top list so if you see those names on there, it's us #lamenerds. I would definitely come back! Super divey, the bathroom is one room...with two toilets. No divider or anything, just literally two toilet seats next to each other. So if you are drunk with your bff and wanna go to the bathroom together, ya don't have to wait I guess! Silver lining? The door does lock at least! Anyway, overall pretty good! X's and O's! J

The place was full though. Atmosphere is very nice, we may have been a touch underdressed for the occasion, or others simply felt like being a bit fancier tonight. The staff was friendly and hustling but it seemed to just be one waitress and the hostess taking care of all 10 or so tables. I guess that actually isn't horrible. I started with the soup of the day. Beef of weck. It was INCREDIBLE. I'd take home a gallon of it it if I could. Creamy. Nice and warm on a cold night. The weck croutons were the cherry on top. Then for my dinner I had the beef on weck panino. The waitress recommended it. Perfectly toasted. Served with au jus and horseradish aioli. So delicious. I'd get it again and again. Also came with homemade chips and a pickle. My husband got the classic beef of weck. It was really tender. Cooked perfectly. The horseradish was strong. Just the way he likes it. The service was very good and it's a cute spot that I'd be willing to come back to. The best thing we had BY FAR were the beef croquettes. These were perfect, and I could have made a meal out of them. They had a tender birria like shredded meat inside with some cheese and probably some potato, I can't even remember but I do remember that everyone loved these. We also ordered asparagus, the Korean Fried Chicken, the shrimp with potatoes (all small plates) and one of my friends ordered the duck entree. My husband and friends had cocktails and mocktails; I didn't order one because they said they had nothing that was sweet. Incidental pet peeve: Saying "all our cocktails are balanced". I get it, you want to brag. But, some of us like things that are sweet, or as in the case of one of my friends, decidedly NOT sweet. If all of your cocktails are balanced the same way, it gives little useful info on what to order. I will respond to this by NOT ordering and sticking to tap water. I'd prefer it if you have a little something sweet and a little something not-sweet on the menu for those of us who don't actually want "perfectly balanced". That said, I did have a sip of the cocktails the others ordered. To my surprise, I liked the Broken Garden Tools. Though it wasn't particularly sweet it was also not super sour/tart and it was refreshing. I *could* have ordered that one, but I never would have known it from the description. I didn't like any of the others I tasted, but I can't remember what those were. Since I don't like whisky and I prefer sweet drinks, don't take this to mean that they don't have good drinks - the others enjoyed theirs, they just weren't to MY taste. Of the other dishes, I liked the cabbage that was on my friend's duck plate (I didn't try the duck). The asparagus was fine. The shrimp and potatoes was ok but not as good as I'd hoped for. And honestly, I didn't love the KFC. It didn't seem to be twice-fried and super crispy like KFC should be, and the sauce to me wasn't balanced between the sweet and spicy flavors I prefer. However, my husband liked it very well. The only other thing I'd caution is to double check ingredients. There was a dish ordered (I can't remember which now, some kind of bread maybe, but not listed as a bruschetta) that said it contained rosemary among other things but did not list basil. We saw no rosemary at all, but a lot of basil, which I can't eat. So I didn't have any. The others shared it. I would have been more disappointed had it been my selection. My friend noted that the server did not ask us about any food allergies, which, if your menu doesn't accurately list its contents, is problematic. Fortunately I know what basil looks like so no harm done. All in all, I would return, get lots of croquettes, order a Broken Garden Tools, and maybe try some other things we didn't get to. But I'd double check all the ingredients.

It is a top notch restaurant that uses high quality and fresh ingredients and adds gourmet touches that are higher end but still work for the Buffalo crowd. And the portions are usually generous. I like it here but a lot of the menu options don't work for my diet. So when I come it's for someone else's occasion but it's still very much a treat. I will say that the staff is always accommodating and helpful to ensure I find something to eat. Most recently I was able to enjoy a delicious special that was grilled prawns with mescaline and vinaigrette, supremed oranges and grapefruits and artichoke hearts filled with herbed goat cheese. It was delicious and filling enough I was able to eat it as my main. The flavors were unique and blended well together. I was full but it was still light. The herbed goat cheese stuffed artichokes were delicious and a real treat. I'd hope to have them another time. The citrus fruit touches were a nice contrast to the richness of the cheese. If you want a delicious meal and a nice place for a date or girls night definitely check this place out.

The stuffed mushroom with artichoke stuffing was very rich and flavorful. Lots of stuffing. The Carrot Papardella had large chunks of fresh seafood and great sauce. The penne with steak was very good. The marsala sauce was very rich and filling but flavorful with that sweet marsala wine sauce. Steak was tenderly cooked perfectly. The waiter brought out a great slice of complimentary birthday caramel ganache cake. Great surprise. Our water glasses were never empty, the bread was plentiful and the meal was so tasty, fresh and flavorful. This place has a good amount of seating but reservation recommended for busier times. Our server was super friendly and knowledgeable. The meal always starts with fresh baked bread service that is accompanied by butter, house pickles and either a hummus or garlic confit (in my experience). My mom is gluten free so she was bought her own dish with focaccia and a roll. She was over the moon about that and really enjoyed the focaccia. We all enjoyed every bit of our meal which included our choice if an appetizer, main dish and dessert from a prix fixe menu for $40. Some of our choices included charcuterie, arugula salad, tamarind shrimp curry, salmon and lemon meringue cheesecake. We left with our culinary needs satisfied and our stomachs full... we even had some leftovers. I can't wait to go back again. It's best to make reservations as they usually get fully booked. Assorted Bread: I'm not a bread person, but I enjoyed their bread. The standard roll was good, the Roll with (dill?) was good, and the one infused with brisket was also good. The dips/snacks that came with the bread were perfect complements to the bread. The pickles were confusing, but I enjoyed them on their own. Chef's salad: A good salad is underrated, and their salad was a case of basic done right. I enjoyed the blue cheese the most, since I haven't had it in a salad in a long time. It was a good mix of softer textures provided by the apple, cheese, and greens, while providing crunch via the nuts. Arayes: I'm expecting a crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside pita. I wanted a juicy and flavorful lamb, and I wanted the tahini + tzatziki sauces to be good. I got all that and was pleased. Shrimp Scampi: I was a bit disappointed by the portion size, but I had to remind myself that the lunch special was $16 and I had already gotten bread and a nice appetizer. The shrimps were big, and the flavors were light. I liked the fact that the dish wasn't oily. Some people might find it dry, but I like it. Jagerschnitzel: This was the best bite of the meal, and I regret not ordering it. The pork cutlet was very good, and the gravy helped improve the dynamics of the flavor. I've never had caraway spaetzle, but I must say that I enjoyed it, and the red cabbage didn't taste like cabbage, and it almost felt like a red spaetzle. It's a beautiful dish visually, and an even better dish when consumed. Dessert: I..... was not a fan. I thought it was too sweet. My companions liked it though. Ambiance: I felt very underdressed. The establishment definitely gave a white tablecloth environment where diners were pressured to buy a bottle of wine. I had to remind myself that it's a school, so the students needed to learn a certain standard. A standard that I could see. It might be better if there was music, but I'm not gonna complain about it. Service: Excellent. I could tell our wait staff was nervous. Who wouldn't be? I'm sure he'll do fine in the future. It would've been nice if our food arrived a bit faster, but I understood the need for pacing in these course menus.
