So being from Memphis, we are BBQ snobs but this place was great. Their dry rub on their ribs taste like the Rendezvous in Memphis. They have 6 kinds of sauces on the table but I only liked one. I think sauces are a personal taste the one we liked was KC style with molasses. The kids got BBQ chicken which was very dry but had a good taste. OMG the ribs are SOOOO good! I got the dry rub, no sauce required. Don't know what kind of seasoning and spices they used but it was literally finger, licking, GOOD. Got a full rack rib dinner (w/ glaze) and she had the brisket and pulled pork platter. Ribs were a little tough and WAYYYYY over seasoned. I've never seen such heavy seasoning on ribs; it was so bad that I couldn't eat more than half. Baked beans were cold and bland. Brisket was thin and rubbery, and it was all gray with no smoke ring. Pulled pork was bland. Only thing we liked was the cheesy corn. We eat a lot of BBQ and cook it too. This $44 meal was sub par at best. We won't be back. Last time we were in town we went to "City Butcher and BBQ" and it was great, so try that instead. read more

My very first trip to Springfield and I told my sister I wanted some real Missouri BBQ. So she took us to Whole Hog Café and I enjoyed every bite and bit of it. I had the Ribs Plate with burnt end cheesy corn and mac and cheese. That burnt end cheesy corn is one of the greatest side dishes I have ever eaten in my life. The ribs were juicy and tender and came right off the bone. When ever we go back to Springfield I will make a point to come back to the Whole Hog Café! read more

Pretty good Midwest barbecue, the burnt ends were my favorite! They introduced me to cheesy corn and I am so glad they did, normally I don't do a lot of cheese but it was delicious. The staff was very friendly and helpful and it was an overall good meal. read more

Couldn't find any burnt ends in the cheesy corn and my tossed salad was missing completely. Tried to call immediately but the line has been busy for close to an hour. I normally wouldn't complain since it's just a salad but the meal was $20 and for that price, I would expect them to make sure my meal was complete. Ok one star says it all. Tuesday at noon and the food was lukewarm to cold. Ribs were dry mighta been good yesterday. Cheesy corn was glorified cream corn ( which I like) with no cheese flavor and bits of chicken in it. Again cool. Baked beans lackluster with balogna in it. Just open a can of pork and beans and there you are. Baked home fries-- small chunks of potato roasted in the oven-- frozen variety. Don't bother. Potato salad with more mayo than I care for and some sour cream which was its only redeeming quality Even the ice tea was weak. My husband, picky son, and I went here for dinner because it was close to our hotel. My son was not happy because no Mac and cheese or kiddy food on the menu. I got him the kids meal with chicken, roll, and bag of chips. He decided to make the dinner roll into a chicken sandwich. He ate his roll then stole mine and ate 2 sandwiches. He takes us for making him go there said it was the best sandwich ever. My husband and I both got the whole hog plate, it was awesome! The ribs fall off the bones and the dry rub was perfect blend of sweet with spice and the potato salad OMG!! My husband doesn't do potato salad and he loved it. This bbq place is somewhat hard to get in to with the road construction going on in front of their restaurant...the menu/ordering process was a little confusing for a new person. After I figured that out, I will say my side salad and the burnt ends were the highlights of the mean, so great! I also ordered the brisket and that was a disappointment....it tasted like sliced roast beef with no taste and swimming in a greasy juice. If I return to the area, I'd probably try something different. read more

Stopped in for lunch on our way to SC. Was a little skeptical because the building was newer and open on a Tuesday. Most of the BBQ places that are any good seem to only be open Thursday through Saturday so I was pleasantly surprised at how good the ribs, Q, and sides were. Great surprise to find this spot on a long road trip. My Mother had a taste for BBQ so off to Yelp we go. I love the wide variety of sauces & I love BBQ that you can eat without sauce & this place was on point. Great portions for the price. The sides were great too ! It is rare to find a spot that has great Cue & flavorful sides....this place is that. This place is very convenient, right off the Highway. We missed the lunch rush & pretty much had the dining room to ourselves. The service was friendly & prompt. Would definitely recommend to people traveling in this area. read more

This was my 10th or 12th stop at a Whole Hog Cafe. As always, great BBQ and sauce. Cole slaw very good. Fried cat fish was also very good.

Stopped in while in town for some local BBQ and noticed the good reviews. Was disappointed. Ribs were dry and sauce did not help. My biggest problem was the cleanliness of the restaurant. The floors were sticky as we walked and all of the chairs were extremely dusty. Rack on the table that held the sauce selection stuck to the table cloth when I tried to move it. Label needed replaced as it was stained. Looked like it had been awhile since the dining room had a good cleaning. My husband did like his brisket. read more

Stopped in for a lunch and ordered 2 brisket sandwhich's with drink and chips. I was hit for 29 dollars!!. The food was "okay" which is the reason for the 2 stars. Service was not the greatest as I had to repeat the order 3 times because the lady running the register was too busy talking to her co-worker. I won't be returning anytime soon. I love to try new bbq places, but am always hesitant when a restaurant has "Champion" on the sign....it usually ends up one of two ways. Either I end up really loving it, or it is horrible and I leave scratching my head on which prison spam contest the restaurant might have one. Having two very accomplished BBQ champions as friends and mentors also doesn't help when evaluating new BBQ restaurants.....I know BBQ the way I was taught BBQ.....but I still try to keep an open mind. Besides, any friend of Jeff Fitter and Terry Black is a friend of mine. Whole Hog Cafe was one of the good ones. Actually, it was one of the better BBQ places that we have stopped at. My wife, daughter (14yo), and I were in Springfield, Mo. for a volleyball tournament on Saturday (01-28-2017) and wanted to avoid the mediocre microwave food being served across the street at the Drury Inn, so we walked over to order carryout and bring back to the hotel. This was the best decision we made all day. I ordered a 1/2 rack rib plate with home fries and smoked green beans, along with a side of chili. The ribs were restaurant style ribs and fall off the bone quality to please everyone with plenty of flavor (these were not competition ribs with a pull......and i was 100% ok with that). The home fries left much to be desired, but the smoked green beans had pulled pork and onion with them and were something different and very tasty. The chili was some of the best bbq chili that I have had. It was really meaty with just enough sweet and heat to be balance each other out. My meal was so good, I did not even crack open the sauce that I brought back from the restaurant. My wife and daughter both ordered the pulled pork sandwich plate with coleslaw on the burger. One of them got the loaded potato salad side, the other got homefries. They both liked their sandwich, but while it was good....they did not rave about it. They said it lacked flavor, but was plenty tender and my wife raved about the potato salad. All in all, it was a great place to pick up food. The inside of the restaurant was big enough to handle large groups and was nice. This was the first time we stopped here, but when traveling through Springfield and looking for a meal, we will be back. read more

We're traveling through Missouri and I wanted BBQ. I love BBQ. I grew up with great BBQ and I try to seek out something everywhere I go in the midwest and south. This BBQ was enormously disappointing. It's not that I think it couldn't be good, I just think the people working there didn't care whether I had enjoyable food or not. We ordered take-out for our hotel room. I got the loaded baked potato with pork - a favorite treat! fluffy baked potato loaded down with cheese and butter and sour cream with tender and rich pulled pork on top? What's not to love! Unfortunately this huge baked potato looked like it had been cooked yesterday and barely reheated. It was hard and starting to brown and get mealy, there was maybe half a tablespoon of sour cream, less than a teaspoon of cheese, no salt, no butter and the pork was just ok. On the dry side and not flavored well. I asked for some of their ranch dressing on the side (the menu stated it was homemade buttermilk ranch) and I was given three plastic packets of pre-made Marzetti's. We also ordered a small side of brisket. Look, brisket is hard to do well. I know this. I order it a lot, always searching for delicious brisket. And this was not done well. Sliced like deli meat, dry, flavorless. I asked for two sauces after the nice woman on the phone told me there were options: the molasses-y one and the mustard and vinegar. I was given two small containers of a thin, spicy tomato based sauce. It's like they weren't even trying! We also ordered the cheesy corn with burnt ends. It could have been ok. But those were not burnt ends. The corn was very sweet, which is fine, but needed more salt with the cheese to balance it out. It tasted like dessert with meat chunks in it. The baked beans were pretty good. Super disappointed. I wanted this to be good. I knew as I walked in when the guy putting food in the window was acting annoyed and surly and the girl behind the counter seemed disinterested that I might be in trouble. Ah well. Live and learn! Hopefully I'll find more good BBQ as we head West. read more

I'm a Texan, so I'm biased. I'll just admit that right off the bat. The BBQ here was OK... not great, not horrible. I sampled the burnt ends (very midwestern) and had some sausage. Good flavor, but not breathtaking. There are tons of sauces. I had #2, which promises to be tangy, somewhat sweet -- more of a generic sauce. It ended up being a little too vinegary for my tastes. If I'm back in Springfield, I will be back. It's in a great location near a lot of hotels. read more

I've had BBQ all over this country. Everyone has their preference. The food here was pretty good not amazing but worth it. Prices are super reasonable. If you like spicy number two was awesome. Ribs weren't as juicy as some of these posts state but maybe they got a slab - I added two ribs to my sausage plate. Sausages were decent - not the best but not the worst. Dined on a Wednesday night. There were two specials this day. The Sarge - a mix of chopped chicken, pork, brisket and sliced sausage. This is mixed with 2 of their house sauces and served open face. This is what I had. It was sweet, smokey and a touch spicy. Good overall flavor, but it seemed that the chicken was a touch dry. The brisket and pork were the stars here. The side of ribs were terrific. Nice smoke with a sweet/tangy sauce. Good value, good BBQ , I can definitely recommend this spot. read more

Make no mistake, I love BBQ. I've had it everywhere. Whole Hog is very good. They proudly show off their trophies in the entry way, so they've had some experience in making BBQ. What I was the most curious about was their selection of sauces. They have 6 different sauces. While meat makes BBQ, and theirs is pretty good, sauce makes it fun. I got ribs with beans and home fries. My wife got a pulled pork sandwich with cheesy corn and potato salad. Her pork was very tasty and moist. The cheesy corn was okay, but I don't care for that too much in general. The beans got better as I ate them, as they seemed a bit flavorless early, but they were pretty good as I continued eating. The home fries were good. The ribs were tasty and barky, but a bit dry. I made sure to try all 6 sauces. 1 and 5 were their molasses based sauces, which I prefer, especially #5. 2, 3, and 6 were their vinegar based sauces, with #3 being a spicy sauce. #2 was on par with Arthur Bryant's in KC and #5 was similar to Joe's in KC as well. Of all the vinegar based ones, I liked #6, the mustard and vinegar one. Good combination of flavors. Whole Hog goes for a more universal BBQ theme of good meat and sauces. If you don't like sauce, you don't have to use it. If you prefer a specific type, they probably have one you'll like. Good stop. read more

In town for one day and thought I give this place a try. Walk in, order, find a table, listen for your name. I got the 2 meat combo with burn ends and brisket and then added 3 ribs. Coleslaw and cheesy corn as the sides. The ribs (dry rub) were small but tasty. The brisket was nothing fancy (good enough). The burnt ends were the best of the 3. Coleslaw was good and he cheesy corn was pretty good too. I'll come back. read more
