The first time I came in Whole Earth I just happened to be in the area and I was bored and killing time. The staff was nice and they had a plentiful amount a "nic-knacks" and out door gear. I moved into a duplex that had these really cool Buddhist prayer flags in the back yard and after about a year they started to decay. I looked into where I could find them and I was directed toe Whole Earth Provisions. I drove over and they had what I want and got me set and good to go super fast! You cant really ask much more from a store. If you're looking for goods for decorating your house, or a hammock or some hiking shoes you can get it all here. I have shopped at this location for at least 10 years and I am always amazed how poor the customer service is. NO ONE will greet you or even acknowledge that you are a person in their store. Not even the manager who cannot even be bothered to look up from the counter. The other day I was trying to buy $100 river shoes and overheard the 2 male staff member talking about "the type of girls who buy chacos". Meanwhile when I need to try some on they just disappeared to the back and did not return. The store is a mess, the windows are a disaster. I don't mind paying $100+ for linen pants but COME ON! Not particularly being an outdoorsy type, I don't get to shop at stores like this often. So when I stumble upon one, it's usually purpose driven. In my case, I came to get a pair of Superfeet insoles in yet-another-attempt to cure my plantar fasciitis. Never mind that I have a gajillion insoles already that didn't work. These were bound to be the cure, based on all the rave reviews. I needed a wide width in my size, and they didn't have that in stock. But the UT store did. Not being a fan of the drag area, I asked if they could transfer stock to this store. They did, and three days later, I had my insoles. Along the way, I discovered a shoe brand I didn't know about, Merrell. They only had one pair in a wide width, but they fit like a glove, so I bought them. They're a little expensive, but well made and rugged enough for trail use. In the end, I had to take back the Superfeet insoles because they didn't' work. Superfeet has an arrangement with retailers to accept product returns up to 60 days. True to their word, I showed on the 60th day, and they took them back with a full refund to my card, no questions asked. If there's a downside to the store, it's that the staff more or less keep to themselves. They'll answer any question if you ask, but aren't the best at engaging a customer. It seems a pity, because it's not as though they don't have ample staff on hand to provide an excellent customer experience. It's just that they don't always apply themselves. Then again, I guess some customers prefer to shop and ask as they need help, which is fine, too. I should probably come back and shop for other things sometime. It seems like a really neat gift store. But I'm perfectly happy using it as an awesome shoe store until then. read more

My teacher/mentor had recommended I come here since I was just offered a new job and need some comfortable yet professional looking shoes. I knew coming here that my shoes would be pricey but I need them within a few days and the fact I could try on these shoes. So no Amazon this time. I started with Dansko and nope the professional clogs are not for me. I ended up buying Klogs which were slightly cheaper and more comfortable for my delicate feet. The shoe guy (that is what I call him) was very nice and eager to help. I am not a fan of telling the employees "here is my size now go get me my shoes to try on." Whatever, it is old school and it is what it is. The place had a lot of cool things in it to include hammocks to buy out front. This south location seems to carry more clothing and hardware and less hippie-new age bullshit (reigning supreme at the N Lamar location) where the novelty wears off before you even buy it. Decent selection of Patagonia products and Crocs (don't knock it until you try it) as well as bags and packs. Usually a sale going on, and as I prefer these kinds of clothes to anything else, deals are essential because it ain't cheap to look comfortable. Nice outdoorsy staff, helpful and fun. read more

But, as luck would have it, found the perfect brown North Face boots and black Patagonia boots here.....and even better on sale.....and even better, a 10% manager's special discount on top of that..... So, boots that normally ran $180, I got for $79.....just awesome.... This is a sister location to the original in Austin and when I was driving through Austin, I saw their sales, but didn't really think about doing any purchasing then....Thank goodness I stopped here.....so absolutely worth it. My fiance purchased a pair of Birkenstocks for me. Staff recommended going a size up for optimal fitting. A month later, realized they were definitely too big. They broke in a little bit, and on the tightest setting they were slipping off. I already threw away the box and receipt. It was shot in the dark, but wanted to see if I could exchange them. We spoke with the manager, and he let me exchange them for a smaller size! Luckily the transaction was saved in the computer system. I am a very happy customer. Look carefully as some items almost appear hidden by other customers to come back and purchase. Beware if you buy any sale items from this store. Your purchase is non refundable. They do not tell you when you check out, nor is it posted at the register. My 12 year old grandson purchased a pair of Toms & a North Face shirt with his own saved up money & money given to him from his mom. After getting home we realized that the Toms were a bit snug & went back to exchange for the next larger size up. The next size up was huge & we did not find anything else that fit. Proceeded back to register to get a refund & was advised that it was non refundable, but they would gladly give us a gift card for future purchases. It is written on the receipt, but unfortunately the clerk placed it in the bag when we purchased & we went home. Poor kid lives in New York & because they kept the money, we were unable to go anywhere else to get his needed shoes for school. read more

I shop here frequently. I spend money here. Been noticing the service going down. Yesterday I had no less than 200$ of merchandise in my hand to try on. Two sales associates were talking about real estate and selling a house. One was telling the other all about an agent he recommended. The other let me into the changing room, closed the door and continued their conversation. Then they called another staff member over so they could go in the back and look at the website of said real estate agent. I was not greeted, or asked if I needed more help. I was treated as less than a sidebar. I bought nothing as a result. This is bad business to say the least. They were so involved with each other, they forgot about customer service and let this customer go way feeling highly neglected. I'm not a hugely outdoorsy person, so I shop here for shoes, gifts, yoga wear, shoes, and shoes. They have some cool stuff for kids, so I like it for Christmas shopping, and the prices on toys and stuffed animals are not bad. They used to have a good selection of yoga clothes, and I could get a couple brands that fit really well, but they don't carry them any more. Best selection of Crocs on the planet. But then there's the grumpy shoe lady. Grumpy Shoe Lady - if you want to sell me expensive shoes, please be friendly and helpful and don't act as if I'm invading your private time when I ask for a different size. When I first moved to Austin and walked in this store, I knew it was a dangerous place. Outdoor gear, clothing, books, shoes, toys, games.....basically something for everyone, or everything for someone (like me). The hammocks displayed outside should have given me a clue but I still went inside. My silly silly husband even let me go inside. If he was smarter, he would have steered me clear away. One random day I walk in and find boots. I've been wanting casual, flat, comfy, boots but I have these twiggy calves and most boots make me look like I'm some 3 year old in mom's boots. THen I find ones that adjust at the calf. Then I see they're on super sale. Then the super helpful staff let me hold it at the store for THREE DAYS while I wallow in my indecision (have you watched the Daily Show w/Jon Stewart? *I* am Miss Indecision 2012). I decide it's fate, go back to the store, they haven't released it from the hold as promised, and I see the GoLocal sign. I ask what it's for and they say 15% off. Additionally off the super sale price! I get BOOTS for $46!!!!!!!!!!! And all the while I'm browsing around and each and every staff member is friendly, helpful, attentive but not stalker-ish like some stores at the mall. loooove. read more

I'm a big supporter of anything or anyone who tries to get people outside more often. Therefore, I'm a big supporter of this store. Camping seems to of become some archaic family weekend getaway from an age long ago, despite the fact its one of the most fun ways to spend a couple days. Seeing your friends and family (especially if they're bad at camping) in that new element is a priceless experience that can supply endless laughs and some healthy bonding. This store has every camping need imaginable, whether your kids are camping in the back yard or you're going on a two week backpacking trip. The staff is friendly and helpful, so even city slicker camping rookies can know what they need to get out there and successfully build a fire (assuming theres no burn ban.) In addition to camping supplies, they have outdoorsy and athletic shoes, great kids gifts to encourage interest in nature, outdoors/nature books, clothing made sustainably, accessories made from reclaimed objects (bracelets made of magazine paper and such), and all sorts of other unique objects. I needed some new kicks that didn't make my feet hurt. I researched my options online to find a few candidates. It appeared that Whole Earth might carry the shoe I was looking for, and since I'm an avid tryer-oner (Fred Flinstone feet), I decided to swing by after work. Since Mopac was especially infuriating on this day, I called ahead to see if they even carried this specific shoe, since I was having a hard time locating the exact model I wanted. Dude in shoes was great. He confirmed that they had the right style, then asked for the sizes I wanted to try on, just to make sure they had them in the store. Sure enough, they did. When I got there, another Shoe Guy grabbed the two pairs I wanted to try quickly, and they had a sale in under 10 minutes. Efficiency! read more
