He and his wife Jo moved to Mammoth three years ago. When asked why they opened a wine bar featuring Italian wines, he replied "We've been to Italy a bunch and we wanted to do wine. Italian wines". They have a small selection of food: Cheese plate, duck and liver pâté and canned mussels. I had the Delirium Tremens beer, my friend had a glass of the Barolo Serralunga red wine. Both were tasty! It was a great way to wait for our table at the Tavern. I'll be back!

The cafe may be small and cozy, but their coffee is definitely big on flavor. It's such a cute and beautiful spot, with a tempting selection of pastries and plenty of delicious coffee options to try. I didn't go too fancy this time because I was really craving a cortado (macchiato), but when I saw they had lavender, I couldn't resist adding it to my double shot. Such a good combination! The coffee was excellent--creamy, smooth, and full of flavor. I'll definitely be coming back to explore more of their coffee menu... and next time, I may have to stay a little later and check out their wine bar too. A lovely little unexpected find!

No other business does this on Reddit. First, service is very slow and pretty haughty. I had to wait 30 minutes for a simple pesto chicken crepe. It tasted disgusting. I got the apple dessert crepe. It was full of little cubes of raw apple that just fell out of the crepe. There was barely any cinnamon or sugar in it. I also got the pesto crepe. There was a splash of pesto and a couple little pieces of chicken. 90% of the crepe is the bread or galette or whatever. The rest (which isn't much) is just thrown in there. At $16 each, this was a complete ripoff, even worse than the usual Mammoth ripoff. The ambiance is pretty good though and they have a nice wine bar area. I could see this place being good for breakfast, but it's not worth spending any more of my money there.

The restaurant is intimate, beautifully decorated with Norwegian and Baltic art, and the open kitchen lets you watch Chef Ian and his sous chef masterfully execute dish after dish. It's calm, composed, and honestly just fascinating to watch. The staff is exceptionally well trained, but what impressed me most is that if they don't know an answer, Chef Ian is happy to come to your table himself. He spent time talking with us, answering questions, and making sure we were enjoying everything. He even told us he doesn't have a single wine on the list that he doesn't personally love. Every course was beautifully prepared and perfectly portioned so we could enjoy each one without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. My husband and I genuinely loved every single thing we ate. If you're anywhere near Mammoth Lakes, make a reservation. (No kids under 10, but I promise it's worth getting a sitter.) This is one of those meals you'll be talking about long after it's over.

It was so cool that the owners Tracie and Steve personally takes care of their customers - serving and explaining each dish with passion and kindness. My husband and I shared 3 dishes: 1) Lobster, watermelon, and basil salad 2) Blue maize wagyu corn dog 3) Short ribs with gochujang sauce. My fave was the lobster! The lobster tasted fresh, and was so good with the basil oil. It was a small dish, but had a good amount of lobster. The corn dog was surprisingly good! I don't typically like corn dogs, but these were juicy, and the batter was light. It was fun to try the 3 different sauces (roasted tomato jam, wasabi crème fraiche, and wildflower honey mustard). The short rib was tender and fatty. The sauce was a little too salty for my preference, but was still enjoyable. Tracie recommended the bread to dip with the sauce, and my husband really enjoyed the bread - especially with the butter. For dessert, we got the chocolate mayonnaise cake, which was perfection! The cake was so moist! The frosting added a great balance of sweetness with the chocolate. Highly recommend checking out Ursa for dinner!

Unfortunately, we left extremely disappointed by the lack of hospitality and professionalism. We were seated at the first table by the entrance, where bright sunlight was pouring directly onto my face. There were only two other groups in the restaurant and at least 10 other tables unoccupied, so we politely asked if we could move back one table to another two-person table. Tracie told us they couldn't move us because other guests had gone online and selected the exact tables they wanted. We knew from making the reservation ourselves that there was no option to select a specific table. When my boyfriend questioned her, she backtracked and said something along the lines of, "Well, I mean, no... we just have all the seats accounted for." If the tables were already assigned or there was a seating policy, just tell us that. We would have understood. Instead, we were given an explanation that simply wasn't true. It took about 10 minutes to address the sunlight, and rather than moving us one table back, they eventually brought over boxes to block the light. What made the experience worse was overhearing Tracie, just a few feet away, tell another waiter to take our table. We felt like we were being passed off rather than welcomed as guests. We ultimately didn't order any food or drinks and before we left, we told them how disappointing this experience was for us. We came to Ursa simply expecting basic hospitality, professionalism, and honesty. If you couldn't move us, just say that. We would have respected it. But don't give us a reason that isn't true and then make us feel unwelcome.

Ravioli Bolognese: The standout dish. Rich, meaty, satisfying, and exactly the kind of homemade pasta dish that makes this place worth visiting. Pepperoni Pizza: Excellent crust, good char, and crispy pepperoni cups. Simple and really well executed. This is genuinely good pizza, not just good pizza for a mountain town. Caesar: One of the more unusual Caesars I've had. It arrived with essentially whole heads of lettuce, celery, and a homemade crunchy component that reminded us of a savory funnel cake. The homemade dressing was excellent. Different, fun to share, and memorable. Pasta: This is where Vulcania really shines. Everything tastes homemade, and I'd be comfortable ordering just about any pasta on the menu. Chicken Parmesan: Pretty good overall, with a creamy, rich sauce over the top. It was a little too heavy for me, but everyone else at the table loved it. Meatball: I would skip this dish. The meatball was undercooked and felt like it was lacking a binding ingredient. One thing worth knowing is that the kitchen isn't particularly flexible about modifying dishes. That makes sense for a chef-driven restaurant, but it's worth considering if you have picky eaters or prefer lots of substitutions. Overall, Vulcania is still the best pizza and pasta we've had in Mammoth. The handmade pasta is the real draw, the pizza is excellent, and dishes like the Caesar give the menu enough personality to make it more interesting than standard Italian-American food.
