We came for 4-6 happy hour and ordered 7 appetizers! The appetizers are pretty big so we definitely didn't need 7 for three people. The shishito peppers were delicious as was the calamari. The Brussel sprouts were not that good because they were really oily. The service was good. read more

I got the duck confit salad and I would not recommend it. The greens were extremely bitter, the duck was extra greasy (even for duck which is usually greasy), the croutons were soggy. I also got some sushi for dinner. Everyone else at the table was served their dinner, and I had to wait for about 10 minutes longer for the server to bring out my roll for dinner. The service was horrible. We were seated there for almost 3 hours for dinner because the server was so slow. After asking for our check, we still had to wait for 15 minutes for him to bring it out. It was a Saturday night, but there were only 3 tables with guests in the entire restaurant, and every other two tables had already been served dinner. read more

Came here 4 years ago, so it's probably not even the same chef or menu. However, this place goes in the history books for serving me the best pork chop and mac and cheese I've ever had. I compare every pork chop I've ever eaten since then to the experience I had here. Not one place since then has even come close. read more

Good restaurant considering we are miles away, in the middle of a mountain village. service was good, but it can get busy

Once again, our $200.00 dinner was ruined by 3 very young children who screamed at the top of their lungs the entire time we were there. Our dinners were great and our server was very pleasant. Unfortunately, the parents of the children had no respect for other guests which made our dining experience very unpleasant. We have had to endure other situations like this at Whitebark and believe management should seat the people with very young children as far away from adult guests as possible. Considering that some parents can't control their children, it is unfair to patrons who wish to have a quiet and enjoyable experience. This surely did not happen for us tonight! read more

One our last night in town we decided to venture to the hotel restaurant for dinner. The room service menu for Whitebark reads like a kid's menu paradise, sliders, mac n cheese, etc. so I was expecting a spot full of comfort food and diner charm. Instead was a pretty slick and sophisticated space and menu. The restaurant is decorated in light woods (not white bark though incidentally) and stones, seemingly suspended by cable wires. We slid into one of the many mahogany brown booths and were greeted by a new, but friendly waitress. I had the micro greens with cabbage, toasted sesame seeds, and lemon vinaigrette (split it with your neighbor). The kobe skirt steak was excellent and everyone else at the table got to enjoy my mashed potatoes (yes, still low-carbing it even on vacay). At the table was also the short rib tagine, served with dramatic flair in tagine pottery (but oddly lacking any grain such as couscous), and, in the words of my bro-in-law "I'm not that hungry, I'll have the trio of sliders" which included a burger of pulled pork, pork belly, and kobe. His fave, the kobe. Last but not least, the chef awesomely made a kid's version of halibut, including an olive tapenade, and thick soy...all based on the fact that my nephew loves fish, olives, and soy. And as it turns out, the mac n cheese is made with orecchiette and truffle oil, we didn't order it but it just goes to show that everything is made with a more elevated palate in mind. For dessert we snagged the last "Elevated S'more" made with a homemade marshmallow and graham cracker shortbread. The chocolate tower featured rocky road ice cream, cookie, cake, and mousse. Luckily we finished these up before a chef started cleaning the exterior open grill...that briefly made the restaurant reek of smoky vapors. I treated and lucked out as $136 definitely seemed reasonable for the quality and service. Turns out they only charged $16 for the halibut too, even though the normal entree is closer to $30. An exceptional accommodation by the house considering my nephew got a customized meal for less! read more

Great morning service from Monica. Friendly, personable, attentive! Good was fabulous. Great start!

I ate breakfast here 2/3 days I was here this week. Their French toast is the best I've ever had. My husband said the pancakes were good. The All American breakfast (eggs, choice of meat, toast, and rosemary potatoes) was really good. The bacon was thick and cooked properly. The rosemary potatoes were out of this world! They were perfectly crispy on the outside and perfectly cooked on the inside. Usually hotel restaurant food is just okay, but this was surprisingly good. Good service. read more

This was my first time coming to this restaurant and I thought it was excellent, starting with the customer service, and then the food, as I was waiting for the food I wanted to see what the comments were before I ate my food, and in my opinion, everyone that rated this restaurant a one star is sleeping heavy, because as I was watching around my area everyone was looking satisfied with their meals and the customer service was just marvelous.. in conclusion this restaurant deserves more stars than it has at this moment. read more

Stopped here for breakfast on the way out of the hotel. Let's cut to the chase here. Hotel food is almost always overpriced and underqualtied (yep that's a word). It is kinda hard to ruin breakfast when you are hungry and a tad hung over. So, had a gallon of coffee and the All American Breakfast. Have to say, not too bad. The main reasons for not rating this place any higher is that it is relatively small and noisy. Plus, service was not all that for such a higher-end place to stay. The design and interior is pretty nice, with a log cabin meets urban hipster. Also tried to get into this place for happy hour - forget it. All tables and seats occupied by the wanna-be ski crowd. read more

We had a wonderful Christmas morning brunch here ... The Grand Marnier French Toast was so delicious ... Best French Toast ever! My son had awesome Eggs Benedict ... Hubby had a great omelet, and my older son who was a little under the weather had a hearty oatmeal. All immensely enjoyed. The service was good, and the Wildflower mimosa cocktails we has were just dreamy. read more

It was "ok"...cool ambiance, basically the only semi-nice/hip area open during the shoulder season. Service was great, had the duck and pork tenderloin--both were overpriced for the taste and also served barely warm :( Would only go back for the bar... read more

Used to have Sushi Bar also in the lounge/bar that was out of this world super, 5 star, (was there end of the Ski Season this year), but I just called as not listed on Westin website and its gone, as super Sushi chief got better offer and left - long talk with manager who was also very sad. This is place I discovered real fresh wasabi - a real treat !!! If you know a great Sushi Chief that likes the mountains - they are looking for a replacement. Meantime the Whitebark is better than a stick in the eye - we know where to go !!! read more

Been here couple time have stayed most of March this year top floor of Westin (not like howard Hughes style). Last time bartender was great make me exactly what I wanted. This time waitress was super nice everyone else around did best to not make contact. By the time my waitress came over to bar to cover she took my order begun to ring it up when another waitress came and said that all I could order is fries and ice cream. Short cute waitress was super nice and did her best but a staff that starts closing procedures while almost dozen customers in bar to a guest at that. But I was told I could possible do in room dinning except they don't know what that menu is??? Kitchen closed but not in room dinning? Then I'm told the hours are not as posted on yelp but actually 10!! Then why did anyone greet me and take my order. I had great time Precious visit but has to be problem from Top down. You think whitebarksux.com is taken .....jk but a meaner exec would SEO that read more

Okay so this is the first bad review that I'm going to write. Usually I am pretty tolerant of the places but I can sense bad management from a mile away and this place has it. If it were not in the Westin that I stay at, I probably would've stopped at my first bad experience with this place. However, I went back 2x since then and this last time was the final straw. First day was about 3 mos ago where we got the $30 breakfast credit with my SPG membership. We were the only people there at the time and our server was so absentee. We had to ask for things 2 or 3 times before we got them and they even completely forgot or side of bacon to the dismay of my daughter. Worst of it was that the server kept coming and asking if there was anything else we needed. The food was decent but it is hard to ruin bacon and eggs. Second day was the very next day where we met up with friends there. We noticed that one of our friends didn't get his omelette at all and we waited about 15m before we could even get anyone's attention to address it. Come to find out the server from day 1 was the manager and I could hear him apologize to another table for messing up her omelette order (the servers gave our friends omlette to another table, they complained and didn't rectify so the manager was getting laid into). When we mentioned our friends omlette never came, the server came back and had the audacity to say "they said that they brought it out" to which our immediate reply was "that's fine but they didn't bring it out to us." Lo and behold the manager comes and they comped his omlette. Third day is 3mos late (yesterday) and this time my 7 yr old son says, my pancakes taste funny. It had chocolate chips all over it and my son eats everything so to hear him say it tastes funny was strange so my wife tries it and she said it was intensely sour to the point that she thought the pancake batter tasted spoiled (as if it were left out the prior day and they said let's see if the patrons notice). Once again the same manager comes out and apologizes and says he took the pancakes off the check (really, like that was something special? We would've expected that + something fo r almost poisoning our kids). Worst off we when we got the check our breakfast was $73 (the price without the $30 breakfast credit). This place is in dire need of a new management. Servers are haphazard and appear that the works "I'm sorry" just spews our of their mouths like it is an everyday occurrence. Okay, I'm done ranting but I had to warn others in case someone really gets sick from this place. Their dealing with people's food for heaven's sake! read more

I felt the need to add a review since the menu changed in December 2009. What a disaster! Based on a previous visit, I had been anticipating coming again, and had meant to put in a 5-star review. The happy hour here WAS great, but now it is completely gone. The only redeeming qualities are excellent service and good (but now overpriced) skirt steak. Read on if you want the gory details. Poutine: Awful, and this is coming from a poutine l-o-v-e-r. Wrong kind of cheese (way too salty and wrong texture), oversalted waffle (okay, but why?) fries, and decent but unremarkable gravy. The only real flavor was salt, and while that is definitely a huge component of poutine it was way over the top here. Skirt Steak: Actually quite good, nice quality and nicely prepared, but overpriced seeing as it just comes with chimichurri (admittedly good) and more oversalted waffle fries. Sans waffle fries this used to be half the price during happy hour. Also, would it kill them to throw in a vegetable? Duck Taquito: The description sounded pretty good, but in the end it was a dried out and oily failure with an overly sweet sauce reminiscent of what you might find at a Chinese buffet. It came complete with pretentious but ultimately useless presentation: served atop a bowl of fried tortilla and wonton strips, as if the wrapper on the taquito wasn't enough dry starch. Bottom line: I would consider going for a steak and salad if money were no object, but even then there are better choices in town. Avoid the poutine and taquitos. read more

It really didn't cut it- At all! Ordered a mix of the sushi menu and the regular menu. The ahi tetaki was really good - nothing to complain there. The sushi roll however was not edible. The rice was undercooked and ice cold with almost no crab meat within the roll. The roll was chewy with a Fishy taste. Truly the worst roll I have ever had. Every airport or grocery store will beat this roll. The signature filet mignon was satisfactory, the quality you would get in business class. The gratin however was ice cold in the center. I really expected more from a restaurant within a Westin. Can't recommend at all (with the exception of the bar area which is nice). read more

Nice to see a sophisticated place to go to dinner in Mammoth. The prices are a bit high even by LA standards, but the food was very well prepared and service was super. We had the yellowtail as an appetizer and it was fresh and properly prepared. The Mac and Cheese was something special. For a special main course we tried the Lobster Tanjine. Very expensive, but also very unique. The light curry sauce worked very well with the Main lobster. We would go again. read more

Sushi bar is really good! Only bummer was they were out of yellowtail. Chef was creative and the sushi was fresh!

We normally like this place but went last night and its was just so so. Granted we were a big party with a lot of kids. The sushi was ok. I think it is a little over priced for what they serve. We will continue to come here when we're in town. Have had a lot of good meals here. read more

White Bark is pretty much what one would expect from a fine dining spot in a 4-star hotel like the Westin. Not more or less. Although the bar scene is very popular. Beware tho, top shelf drinks are $12-14. But as I said, this is what I'd expect from this type of place. One bummer for us, we were seated in a dining room on the side that had 4 round tables that seat 6-10 people. The room was very loud as the two other parties in the room were in a mood to celebrate. Never to be discouraged or outdone, we decided to stage our own "loud off" to see if we could out do the other tables. There was no reasonable way we could ask the others to be quite so we decided to join the fun. In summary, the food is good, as are the service and atmosphere. BUT, you are paying for it, and you get what you'd expect. read more

Yuck! Even the bacon was awful. Do you know how depressing it is to eat shitty bacon?

A cut above for hotel fare. Ordered asian salmon & soba noodles, and a green salad with chicken breast. So tasty, especially the salad. Very affordable, especially considering the location. Loved it! read more

Ate lunch here twice and was left both times wanting the food to be just a bit better. I had the kale salad with grilled chicken, the dressing was too much, I regret not asking for it on the side. The build out and atmosphere are great however. I enjoyed hanging out there for apres ski drinks or late night last round. read more

As a hotel restaurant, we were pleasantly surprised to find Whitebark to actually be quite good! Reading previous reviews, we got lucky to have a great waiter, Mike, who was helpful & attentive. Got a little worried & apprehensive when our water was just room temperature & without ice, though. (Wish I could deduct 1/2 a star for that.) However, when I wasn't quite sure about trying the juniper berry brined pork tenderloin with a blackberry ancho demi glacé but he said it was good, he was spot-on! Tasty & so very tender, I was impressed! Hubby had the roasted half chicken which was tasty & juicy, not dry at all, thank goodness. Dessert was the chocolate decadence cake which was so rich & dense, it was a good thing we shared it! Very enjoyable meal. I'm guessing we were fortunate to have had good wait staff & an awesome chef for our Saturday night dinner, unlike some previous reviewers. read more

The sushi was excellent and our server was really professional. The setting is nice. We'll definitely go back to try the rest of the menu on our next trip to Mammoth. read more

Very slow service. Our waiter would rarely come around to see if we needed something. My herb chicken was raw, when I cut into it blood was all over my plate. This is unacceptable in chicken. So for Valentine's Day, I did not have dinner. read more

Decent food - sat us promptly for a 9 pm reservations. Service on the other hand fell very short. Had to walk to the bar to ask for the dessert menu after our server went missing for an hour. She then came back to ask us to close out because she wanted to go home an hour ago. Well that explains it! Perhaps they would be better served by hiring people who want to work there and strive to make it a good experience for their guests. Won't be going back and don't recommend you do. read more

Outstanding experience for our anniversary while doing some late season skiing in Mammoth. Have stayed in the Village across the street on numerous occasions and often thought of dining at the Whitebark based on the perceived ambience. Everything met or exceeded our expectations. Our table had a beautiful view through the trees. All reasonably priced and meticulously served by a very attentive and friendly Nate. A restaurant I strongly recommend for a special touch on your next Mammoth experience. The bar looks great as well although obviously very popular. Think we might just try the hotel, too, and not complain about lugging our skis up the outside stairs. read more

We ate here 2 weeks ago and it was pretty good. So we returned last night and something changed. The waitstaff was apathetic and the menu was pared down. While we were happy the first time, this time it seemed so expensive for what we were getting; mediocre service and food. Will definitely not return. There are better choices in Mammoth. read more

i went there last night with my 3 best friends for a night out. We had a nice night at the sushi bar with great service. Both of the sushi chef's were awsome! even though they were pretty busy they took the time to talk to us (multi tasking of course) and the service was awsome. The sushi chef that we had made the best handrolls ever and how perfectly sliced the tuna and tako was was amazing. The food was great the service was awsome and we had an amazing time! read more

BAD SERVICE. We visited on March 8, 2010. They apparently changed the menu for the winter; removing the Food Happy Hour. Unfortunately, they never took this off their website. This is the link that was still active more than two weeks later: http://www.starwoodhotels.com/pub/media/1562/2010_dinner.pdf Not knowing it was gone, we went at 5:30PM for the happy hour. The waitress said they didn't have a food happy hour. When we explained that we saw it on the Westin website, she retorted, "Well I don't make the website". She did subsequently come back and say that she went on the website and didn't see anywhere that showed they still had the happy hour. She turned down my offer to show her the link myself.... oh well, she makes us feel like bums. We eat because we are starving. The food is indeed OK but we can't help from avoiding the off-putting aftertaste left from our Westin service experience. NOTE to WESTIN: please follow link above to fix the posted menu. That is all I asked for during the meal and wrote on my receipt. UPDATE: 2 hours after this initial review, the correct updated menu has been posted. Thank you Yelp! Westin: you keep 2 stars for lousy customer experience in restaurant. read more

This restaurant/bar has some of the best, most consistent food we've had in Mammoth. I generally don't like to go to a destination and park myself in the hotel bar/restaurant, but this one has a good selection of food and drink, and has a festive apres ski atmosphere. It's pricey, but the happy hour drink specials are good. In addition, you can get sushi (which was actually pretty good). read more

I've been to Whitebark quite a few times during their happy hours for food and drinks. They've always done me right. Maybe it's because I was a long time local. Nevertheless, the food is interesting and tasty. For the first time just a few weeks ago I sat at their sushi bar. I have to say that I wasn't expecting much considering the distance from the ocean. But, I was pleasantly surprised. The fish was fresh, presentation was excellent. Once I told The sushi chef what i did and didn't like he knew exactly how to cater to my tastes. All in all it was a good experience. I will be back. read more

Excellent service. Right across from the village. Free valet parking. Good food and generous portions. Decent wine list. I had the filet mignon. Very satisfy with the order. The duck confit was good too. For appetizer, I got the special watermelon salad that was very refreshing. The bread pudding was delicious for dessert. Would come again. read more

This is an underestimated restaurant in Mammoth. The food is great and the service is even better. The caprese salad was a big hit with the kids and the sushi was excellent. Breakfast is good too. When the village is packed this place delivers. read more

Absolutely the worst service I have ever experienced at a restaurant. Servers argue in customer view who should serve a table--with not serving being the desired result. Complained to a manager but same results the next day. Reflects poorly on the Westin Monache, who outsources to Whitebark. Only reason anyone dines here is free breakfast vouchers by the hotel. Staff may resent this. Just a hunch. read more

Started out with a high recommendation by the server for the ahi poke, which we then ordered and there were only about 5 small pieces of ahi in a heap of vegetables. Not what we had in mind so we sent it back. The duck breat (menu spelling error breast) was decent but cold, good pairing with the sweet potato. Nice flavorful sauce. The scallops on the other hand had a terrible aftertaste, similar to lighter fluid. I will not order that one again. Poached pear desert was pretty good and maybe a 4. Overall the food for what you pay is not in alignment. The prices were waaay too high for the quality of food. The atmosphere has potential for a five restaurant, although, but the most unbelievable experience you will have here is if you just bring your own bottle of wine. Enjoy your desert! read more
