Open 24 hours a day since 1939! Lots of menu items to choose from. It has the nostalgic old school diner feel that make s me smile. I love a good diner but this one unfortunately fell a little short. I tried one of the specials of the day: fried perch and macaroni and cheese. They were out of perch so we substituted tilapia. Parts of it were good, but other parts were fried so much that it was all crisp and I couldn't taste the fish. The macaroni & cheese were pretty bland. My side salad was awful. The cucumbers were rancid. When I bit into the cucumber pieces, my mouth was hit with a such sharp burst of sourness that I had to spit it out! I loved my strawberry milkshake! My boyfriend really liked his chocolate shake too. He said his cheeseburger was just ok. The service was friendly and attentive. I'd just finished a most excellent visit at the most excellent Vitalogy on Dearborn, and I was in the mood for something hearty. I assumed I'd just grab some fast food but then I walked right by an extremely old-school-looking diner called White Palace Grill. Who could say no to that? I walked inside and the place was exactly what I wanted it to be. It looked like it hadn't been updated in decades. I loved it. My server was pretty surly and impatient but again, that's exactly what I want from a place like this. After perusing the extensive menu, I finally settled on the Philly Cheese Steak ("Sliced steak with mushrooms, onions and green peppers, smothered with melted cheese"). It arrived to the table about 10 minutes later and sure looked amazing. And yeah, it's exactly the kind of greasy, cheesy meal I was hoping for. Do I wish the pieces of steak hadn't been quite so tough and chewy? Of course. But did I enjoy it anyway? Heck yeah. The copious melty cheese compensates for a lot here, as do the sautéed veggies. They are OK, Usually, but there seems to be hiccups occurring more than they should. For instance, the waitresses will write down your order. But there's a 30/70 chance it will get screwed up. Missing items, not cooked0made to order. Now what? They often seem to have short span attention issues, and I've seen energy go in all the wrong directions, and paying Trump Tower Exec Suite attention to certain diners, while others are like Lepers. At time you gotta cattle whip someone to get a refill of water. You laugh. Is it all about tips? Maybe. Or racial profiling? Maybe. The cooks are halfway decent usually, but trust this isn't Gibson's Steakhouse. I've seen another diner recently get black Pancakes. Hash Browns are all over the map. That's horrible in any sense. I've had their Pancakes once, they suck, like loaded with some funky sweeteners, or who knows! That needs an upgrade pronto! Nasty they are IMO, and the cheapest fake Maple Syrup money can buy, again pathetic. Counting pennies. The manager woman plastered with tattoos, she's got a puss on her like Elvira in Scarface, and like somebody just killed her Cat. You laugh! Prices are high, Coffee and any beverage are off the charts. What is this, the United Center? You laugh. Amazing they don't charge you for water. And Eppels down the street, it's mostly another total joke, and a dump. Damn shame that Chicago isn't even a shadow it once was. Seems they never have enough staff. And the staff that are present, no one shakes a leg. Why have they never hired men as servers? The women there at present look like they're all ready for the glue factory, burnt to a crisp! I was eating in White Palace in 1973 to before the renovation and waitresses. While that old one was a much larger rathole of the one of today, I liked the old one much better. read more

I placed an online order for pickup on my way to work. Pickup was quick and easy, but when I got to work the food started falling out of the container into the bag. The food had been placed in the bag too hot and stacked on top of another container, which caused the containers to fuse together and pull apart when I lifted it. I called the restaurant to report the issue and was told I would need to bring the food back to receive a credit. I explained that I was already at work until 2 PM and even offered to send a photo, but that wasn't accepted. Being asked to come back later in St. Patrick's Day traffic just wasn't reasonable. I've been coming to White Palace Grill for over 13 years while working in the medical district, so this was disappointing. I hope management reviews their packaging and how situations like this are handled, because the customer service used to be much better. read more

Went there for dinner around 5 pm as it was just at the bus stop we dropped and were too tired to walk elsewhere so we dicided to give it a try . This place definitely doesn't hesitate wheen it comes to size burger in my opinion was quite big but if you like bacon you got some for your money they do put A LOT of bacon in your burger which compared to the cheese ratio was a bit disproportionned . Our waitress was really nice maybe a bit rushy for us to take our orders before we could even check on the menu but very good service otherwise. Also glad to mention that once we chose the place we discovered it been featured on DDD the TV show with Guy Fiery back in 2008 . All American diner with a retro vibe. The walls are painted with pieces of Chicago history which is really fun. Service was fast and friendly. We ordered the Ruben deluxe which comes with soup and fries. The Ruben is delicious, I am not huge fan of rye bread and this was very good, not overpowering. Shopping is close by. Went here for a late night breakfast for dinner. Staff was nice and helpful. Food came up fast and compared to the prices in the San Francisco Bay Area, White Palace Grill was probably 30% or more less. I got the biscuits and gravy which came with two biscuits (I had the gravy on the side), two eggs over easy, and four slices of bacon. Two of us visited on a Sunday morning around 9 am. Easy parking on Canal Street. We were graciously greeted as we entered and were seated in the larger room. Patrick was our server and introduced us to the various offerings.... You'd think we were in a 4 star restaurant! Good day my Foodzies, recently Glenda and I visited the White Palace Grill on Roosevelt and Canal. This restaurant has been around since 1937, and it's open 24 Hours. When you walk in you are reminded of an old school diner with the red and white vinyl chairs and booths and a large counter complete with swivel stools also adorned with red vinyl. We received a warm welcome upon entering and were instructed to sit wherever we liked. We chose the back seating area so as to avoid the sun. This restaurant is riddled with Chicago nostalgia photos of sports figures, mayor Daley as well as numerous renderings of Chicago icon (Harry Carrey, Walter Payton, Michael Jordan, Mike Ditka and even Walt Disney) from floor to ceiling. The restaurant was clean and well kept, Our server was Edna she was very polite and accommodating. We both had wraps Glenda had the Southwest chicken and I chose the Philly cheesesteak both in a spinach wrap. Unfortunately they were both under seasoned. The highlight was the coleslaw and the crinkle fries. I give this restaurant 4 stars most because of the nostalgia. I recommend this restaurant as a Chicago experience. good vibes, mediocre food. this 24 hour diner was a popular and ideal place for me and my friends to end a saturday night at 3am. it being halloweekend, the line to enter was pretty long and we waited outside for ~30 minutes before getting seated. inside, you will find an authentic diner experience-- bright white lights, vintage furniture and decorations, friendly staff, classic diner menu with diverse and expansive options. we ordered the appetizer platter (mozzarella sticks, jalapeno poppers, breaded mushrooms, onion rings) to share and i also had a tuna melt. i will say that for a late night meal with friends when you're tired and hungry, the food hit the spot: the portions were big--the tuna melt was open-faced due to the massive amount of tuna packed onto each slice of bread--and the mix of mayo and cheese, in addition to the fried appetizers were the exact combo i needed at 3am. but eating and looking at the leftovers the next morning was not at all the same experience-- the food presentation is not great and taste is pretty mediocre at best. the prices also felt steep for the quality. but overall, it's still worth it for the vibes if you're hungry, with good company, and looking for an authentic american diner experience. read more

I finally took the opportunity to go since I was leaving my car for an oil change nearby. I ordered the French toast with eggs and choice of meat and added strawberries. He suggested another "white building" establishment and at first, I didn't mind, but then I realized where we were and asked him if we weren't far from there. We felt welcomed the moment we walked in the door. We sat in a booth and had enough time to look over this huge menu.. and BTW, breakfast is served all day!... I picked the corned beef hash with eggs & toast, the hubby got the patty melt and our daughter got biscuits & gravy. We didn't hear a peep from our daughter for almost 15 minutes as she enjoyed her biscuits & gravy... something that says a lot about the way that the food is made! Our other two meals were just as good as I hoped that they would be. And I am so happy that it was. Our waitress made the whole experience even better as she made it seem like we were at her home. And when we checked out, the lady that checked us out even suggested what to try the next time we come - not if we come back, when we come back. That seriously topped out our night there.
