I've been focusing on clean eating, so today I drove out of my way to Whistle Stop for a healthy lunch. The food was amazing - tasted great, no weird processed food, freshly prepared. The staff is friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend this for lunch or breakfast. read more

What a wonderful place. I really wish it was closer to me, because it easily beats any breakfast place in the Farmington Valley area. We hit the Whistle stop for a late breakfast today. We sat outside, and enjoyed the morning. But the real treat was the food - very fresh food, made with natural ingredients. Fresh ingredients?! What a novel concept. I don't understand why more places don't do it. I had the Corned-Beef Hash, and I have no idea why I ordered it, my only experience with it was that stuff my mom heated up out of a can (awful stuff.). It called to me and I got it and am I glad I did. It was absolutely delicious. Two of my compatriots had different omelettes. I wish I could tell you what kind but I have no idea. The both loved them and one is particularly finicky when it comes to their omelettes. The homefries were a success too, really well seasoned and made with care. The bread served for toast scrumptious and made locally. The standout was the cranberry walnut. I could eat that every morning. The kids all got the kids breakfast -- a pancake or french toast with an egg and a piece of ham or bacon. You can even order it on a frisbee, that they thankfully washed off for them when they finished. Parking was easy. The service sparkles, it's the personal kind of friendly that makes you feel like you've been there a thousand times. We will definitely make the trip again, all 46 minutes of it. Maybe next time we'll try lunch. Sadly, they are not open for dinner except for special events. read more

Fantastic, fresh, locally grown ingredients, friendly service, and great views. The cafe even offers anti-viral teas, which taste delicious. I highly recommend the place. Most unique omelettes I have ever had. Definitely worth the trip. read more

A tiny place with plentiful outdoor seating if the weather is good. Lots of healing herbal teas. An amazing menu with classic and interesting food. The place has a long-standing history and oozing with charm. We lucked upon when visiting from out of town and it made our day. You won't want to miss-a hidden gem! read more

Whistle Stop Cafe - Breakfast & Brunch Near Me - Deep River, Connecticut

1.We waited 40 minutes for breakfast. Turns out that the "chef" was at a flea market, we were waiting for her to return so we could eat. apparently no food comes out of the kitchen when the "chef" isn't around. 2. ordered "corned beef" and hash, which consisted of 97% potatoes, 3% corned beef. when i returned it, i was barked at "don't order it again, that's how i make it. we put it in the food processor". was it left in the food processor? it certainly didn't make it to my plate. she should be ashamed to call that dish "corned beef hash". 3. asked for a bacon, egg and cheese on a roll instead. less than 60 seconds later, i got a delicious roll that was three times too big for the one egg, 3 slices of cheese and uncooked bacon that went with it. 4. the "caramelized bananas" on my wife's pancakes were a joke. not sure if the "chef" understands the word caramelized. you should look that one up, miss. caramelized does not mean burned. 5. 5 dollars for a side of slab bacon that was inedible. you still need to take the skin off, "chef". 6. watched the busboy re-set the picnic tables outside. someone needs to take the time to explain that you aren't supposed to handle EVERY piece of silverware by the end that GOES IN YOUR MOUTH. 7. no kitchen personnel were wearing clean gloves when handling ready to eat foods. health dept violation 8. kitchen personnel not wearing hair restraints. health dept violation. 9. will stop here, need i say more? i could... read more

My family spent the weekend in Connecticut and returned to The Whistle Stop for Saturday brunch, always a hallmark of our visit to the CT river valley. There was surprisingly no wait for a table, parking was easy, and everybody in the restaurant smiled a greeting to us. The specials menu made life a challenge: the sweet/sour French toast or the many options of Eggs Benedict? The mushroom variety EB won me over, and it easily became the best brunch I ever had. These folks know what they are doing, are passionate about fresh food, and the decor is worth the visit. We ate outside under the covered canvas and enjoyed sensitive service: our server came to the table just as we needed a refill of the kind of coffee you could drink all day. Can't wait to get back again! read more

Love, love, love, love this place! I've only been here once, but I left with a hug, dinner reservations, a full stomach, and a unique experience. We just moved to Chester, so we had to establish the basics. A solid breakfast place is of course a must. Being in Middletown, we were spoiled with O'Rourke's and Cafe 56. Chester and Deep River are much smaller so I was worried maybe I wouldn't be able to find something as good. The Whistle Stop was the favorite for most Yelpers in the area, so we made it a point to go our first free weekend morning. It is a small place. Twenty people probably max, and that's pretty squeezed in. It was pretty full when we walked in on a Sunday, but we were lucky enough to grab a table for two. The specials were amazing. There was a short list of them in addition to their menu. When our waitress came over she said she had a few to add also. They do indeed have a creative collection of eggs been combinations. I ordered an omelette with roasted beets, goat cheese, cranberries, and spinach (it was really hard to decide between that and their other big special wild mushrooms, white truffle oil, and parmesan). My boyfriend got the savory eggs benedict, which was spaghetti squash, pineapple, and ham with hollandaise sauce. We also ordered a homemade cinnabun which was warm and toasted. Everything was phenomenal. The best part was after the breakfast. We talked to the staff, including one of the chefs (who I also believe is the manager) about their food, their wonderful events, and a bit about themselves. They were so kind and so excited about cooking, baking, and just making people happy. While they told us about their once a month dinners (which benefit a charity of their choice), they fed us samples of dogwood jam. Dogwood, as in the tree. It was very good. They have 4 course dinners once a month. There are two seatings, one from 5-7 and one from 7-9. It is $30 a person and includes wine or whatever drinks they make to go with the courses. Reservations ahead of time are a must because as I said, they only have room for 20. It is family style and everyone is allowed to participate. If you want to make something or bring a bottle of something you are more than welcome to, as long as you bring enough for everyone because they said there are lots of exchanges, which is one of the best parts. They post the menu on their Facebook page a week before the dinner because they get their ingredients fresh from markets or they gather them themselves. They told us lots of stories about events past as well as the dishes they made. We could not say no. We made our reservation for their December dinner, the 19th. They also informed us that their last day of winter (I believe the 16th of January?) they serve free breakfast all day! They close for a period in the winter until March 15th. The last day before closing though they empty out all the food in the kitchen. You are welcome to a free breakfast as long as you help clean up the place afterwards for the closing. I'm hoping we can make it for this day! I know for sure we'll be in for many more breakfasts before then. A definite must-go if you are in the area. Before we left we got big hugs and a very heartfelt "welcome to the area, see you again soon." read more

The food was outstanding! Service couldn't of been better. Had their pumpkin muffin and harvest Benedict. So happy we found this cute quant gem! read more

I came here on a Friday mid-morning/early afternoon. I was taken aback a little by the plastic outdoor furniture and picnic tables, but I decided not to judge solely by the seating. I sat inside and the diner style menus were pretty sticky, as was the table. Despite the lack of a crowd, the food took a long time to come. I got a tilapia and shrimp sandwich that I can't really complain about, I enjoyed it but I wish it was a little crispier. My dad got tuna stuffed tomatoes, which he didn't like so he traded with his wife, who thought her eggs Benedict was undercooked. $46 later I decided on 3 stars. Not terrible, but not a place I'll be showing up to again any time soon. read more

What a great little place! Totally worth the stop, and the service was really quick. We were a party of 6 for brunch, everyone was really happy with the food and drinks. They have breakfast and lunch stuff, my dad got the burger and said it was delicious. The iced tea and iced coffee selection was great, and the lumberjack omelet was so friggin good. All the ingredients were organic, and the owners/cooks were hospitable! Go eat at this place!! read more

The new cook, Evan I believe his name is, made us absolutely delicious omelettes. He's a trooper! We will definitely be back again.

I'm surprised that the Whistle Stop is not reviewed more. We've gone to the Stop at least 10 times and have found them excellent. The food is high quality and the service is adequate. You'll pay more for breakfast but you'll feel better because it really is quality in and out. I'm assuming the owner/chef worked in some high-end kitchens before settling into the Stop. The crab cake benedict is fantastic and the pancakes are something special. Bring $40 for two and leave with $5 in you pocket. Bottom-line, check out the specials because that's where it's at, and if nothing on the specials tickles your fancy you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Fresh home cooking with flare. read more

We came upon this restaurant by chance and became instant fans. My group consisted of a vegetarian (me), a picky 6 year old, a meat lover, and a gourmet. We all were very pleased with the Whistle Stop. The menu is creative and built around what is available for the season. The chef is a vegan herself and takes great pride in her meat free selections. I had a fresh bulgar creation topped with a mouth watering veggie buger that was "to die for". The meat lover had an omelet with homemade sausage and a mango chutney. I think she literally licked her plate clean. The gourmet had a sweet potato and ginger soup that left her raving for the entire afternoon. The picky 6 year old was happy with the jumbo pancake. He was happy that the owner came out personally and discussed karate techniques. Besides being an awesome chef... she is also a black belt! read more

This COULD be a five star fun little diner. The food is always interesting and yummy. The specials are fresh and show the chef is always thinking and tinkering, the food is just the right kind of greasy, not too much. Problem for me: the waitstaff always forgets to tell me what they have run out of. Always I order to hear, "all out" repeated. One time I ordered a pumpkin blue cheese thing. When eating it did not taste right I asked the waitress and heard they had run out and were doing turnip instead. I hate turnip and I wasn't given a choice to order something else. read more

RUDE! No amount of good food can (and BTW...the food is just OK...the bar isn't very high here in Deep River) can help dim the sting of really rude and hurtful employees. I had called and asked for an order to go and got laughed at..."like are you F*** kidding...I'm cleaning my grill.'..it was not polite and not customer centric. I have been going to Whistle Stop since it opened and was never treated like this. Really bad. read more

We made our way to The Whistle Stop from Colchester as per my fellow Yelpers and, yet again, you all did not disappoint. The Whistle Stop is an unassuming, very small, quaint restaurant with a full, elaborate, and delicious menu served by an easy-going, friendly staff. The eggs benedicte are cooked to perfection and dressed subtlety. Deep River is nestled in one of the most beautiful areas of New England, worth the 30 mins scenic drive through its dense wooded areas for its local brunch hangout. read more

This restaurant was wonderful, the food was very fresh and delicious ,and our waitress went above and beyond to take care of us.She was friendly and very professional. Great little local diner. Tight seating, but friendly owners. Cash only.

A new favorite place to eat! This was my first time at the Whistle Stop and the food was extraordinary! My husband and I both had different versions of poached eggs and we both agreed we would become regulars. We were served quickly, staff were very friendly and they are doggie friendly! The location is conveniently located for anyone traveling by. Your taste buds and belly will be happy! read more

Local small town breakfast joint opened 7:30-1:30 pm normally and once a month for dinner (usually something special and needs advance reservation I believe). They're known for their benedicts and the Poseidon with crab meat and lots of dill did not disappoint. The spinach was the perfect addition to the creamy crab meat and the home fries were on point, deliciously seasoned, not too burnt. Definitely try their healing teas, they will be very honest with which ones taste bad and which are too sweet. Watermelon frost apparently is really bad. They have a fun trivia deck of cards to play through while you wait on the food. Great idea! And Cash only btw! read more

So good! Always have creative specials and I love the eggplant eggs benedict and low carb alternative options.

Another hidden gem in Tri-Town! Been going here for 6 years and have always had an amazing meal. Great service, friendly and professional! Recommend eating inside, bugs can be a bother by the picnic tables outside. Pancakes are everything here!!! read more

I found this on Yelp last Summer and the food was amazing! the spicy crab omelet was to die for!

I had a great experience at the Whistle Stop. I was recommended here by a friend. The building is a little beat up and old, but the food made up for it. A lot of really good eggs benedict choices. I had the home made corn beef hash Benedict. We'll be back, even though its a 35 min drive away. read more

Love this quaint little place! Hedy, the owner, makes the best omlets anywhere! She is also always such a welcoming and friendly person... whether it's your first time there or your 100'th. I had a basic cheddar and bacon omlet and my boyfriend had the "Monte Carlo" and he loved that too. Everything is always delicious and fresh. The place may be small, but is certainly cozy and I've never had an issue finding a seat. Hedy's daughter Maddy was our server today and always has a friendly smile and pleasant attitude. Will always go back, and highly recommend it. read more

Why did it take me 30 years and traveling around the world to find the best breakfast joint 20 mins from my house?! This place is small and warming with great hospitality. Soft Jazz music in the background as you sit down. They have spiritual teas to help the common cold to arthritis and joint pain. The columbian coffee is always fresh and my cup stays full. The food is not just excellent, it is unbelievable. I don't know how so much flavor can be added to the meals that I have but I continue to go back to this place. I have been here 3 times in the past week bringing my girlfriend, my mom, and then my mom and dad. They all had the same experience. This place tries to go organic as much as possible and farm to table as well. You feel healthy and not full and disgusting when you leave. I've been here when there have been 2 different chefs and the food tastes just as good. I ordered off the French weekly special and got the Wild Mushroom Benny which is an experience in your mouth! I also ordered the stuffed french toast with caramelized bananas and blackberries. I couldn't decide which one I wanted as the last taste before I left. I recently tried the Neptune Benny with crab meat and cream cheese and dill. Once again, The Whistle Stop does not disappoint!! They also do catering. Instead of having a catering menu, the chef asks what the theme of your party is or what type of food you like and the price you want to pay. She will the create a menu for you. I can't express how great this place is. If you are driving up or down route 9 take the time to get off exit 5 and eat here!!! If you aren't impressed, I will pay for your meal! read more

This is the place for breakfast! Small and cozy with friendly staff and customers. Homemade hash was excellent , good coffee and the Cannes Eggs Benedict were delicious. read more

This place is small indoors, so I am going to speculate that when is is cold out, the outdoor tables would not be ggod, but today it was perfect outside, we sat in back by the creek and were greeted and served faster than any drive thru I ever remember. And the extensive breakfast menu means everyone will be happy. The Breads that came were FANTASTIC. I could go to this place over and over again for breakfast and never tire. If you are local you are lucky. Enjoy this little gem! read more

Small. Cozy. Friendly. Great service. Excellent breakfasts. Little pricey but well worth it. Kind of an adult's breakfast nook.
