Never written a review on Yelp before. I work as a bartender in New York, and I don't Yelp. But HOLY MOLY was the breakfast I just had here amazing. I got the Smokey Benny off their specials menu and it was honestly one of the most delicious breakfasts I remember having. Smoked sausage, amazing wild mushrooms, and smoked Gouda with poached eggs and Hollandaise. Not only was it just an explosively flavorful meal, but the service was lovely. I was traveling yesterday - this time on I95N and, at lunch time, did my usual search of Yelp for a place to stop. Well, the Whistle Stop was a little off my path, but the reviews were compelling, so I took a side trip (only about 15 minutes) up CT-9 to Deep River. I was greeted warmly and the only thing that slowed my order down was making a decision from all of the great sounding items on the menu. Even though it was lunch time and their burgers sounded great, I am a sucker for home-made hash, so I ordered an Irish Jig (egg, cheddar and corned beef on a roll). While I sat at the counter watching the chef work her magic with my sandwich, getting just the right sear on the hash and cooking the egg (scrambled) thoroughly but leaving it light and fluffy - a perfect compliment to the crisp, flavorful hash - I chatted with her and the two servers about the place, the road and current events - both in town and in the world at large. By the time my sandwich arrived, I felt like an old friend who had just been away for a while and who picked up right where we left off the last time I had been in town. The sandwich was perfect. The hash was a nice balance of corned beef, onions and potatoes, with a nice sear but still moist inside, and, as noted above, was complimented nicely by the egg and cheese. Every bite was relished. My only regret was not having the opportunity to try one of the luscious cinnamon buns I was offered for dessert. I'll save some room next time I make the detour... read more

Went in today for the first time and have to say, this place ROCKS! It was a mom and her daughters serving about 50 people and they blew us away. It was packed when we got here and the girls made sure that we had everything we needed while we watched food get cranked out of the kitchen. So so so much fun watching their process. This place was recommended to me by a friend and it was one of the best recommendations I have ever received. I was greeted by multiple people as soon as I entered, and felt at ease in a new environment. Everyone there was very friendly. There was a large list of specials in addition to a pretty comprehensive menu. I went with the waitresses suggestion (after she asked me some leading questions) and ordered a crab cake eggs Benedict. Everything on the plate was fresh and tasty. The combination of great food and friendly atmosphere makes this a must-go in my book. read more

The food here is good. Not great, but good. If you are looking for that good old Sunday morning hangover food, this isn't your place. It's healthy tasty food. I give it 5 stars because it was yummy. The Whistle Stop is a great option for breakfast if you live anywhere near Rte. 9. The food is tasty and creative. On my last visit, I especially enjoyed the Lyon omelette. The place is tiny however, so I wouldn't recommend coming here with a big group. The service is friendly and funny. The only criticism I have is that they sometimes run out of certain items on the menu. But with that minor issue aside, it's an easy place for me to recommend. read more

This is the best breakfast place I have ever been to. Never once disappointed in any aspect of this place. The regular menu is delicious with several repeat winners. Connie's Cannes is my favorite omelette- also fantastic when done as a benedict. The specials are always creative and inspired by the owner/chef's travels. They also now incorporated low carb options for us health conscious folks without any crazy charges. (Most places feel the need to punish you for eating healthy, not the Whistle Stop.) The inside can get a little tight as it is small and you may end up waiting for a table but this is time well spent. When it is packed it is somehow never claustrophobic, the staff is wonderful and the majority of people who I've seen there are pleasant, probably because of the food. In the warmer months there is outside seating, highly recommend this when possible as Deep River is a beautiful town and a little more room to stretch is great. Definitely stop down, bringing a bottle of Champagne is acceptable for mimosas as well. Have some great food and pleasant service, well worth the potential wait! read more

Our experience was okay. We went on a rainy Sunday morning, traveling back from our trip at Misquamicut Beach. We were looking for a good place for breakfast around noon (12PM). We tried a few spots before we reached the Whistle Stop. It was completely occupied with people, which was a great thing. That means regulars love them. The menu had a great selection and the specialty's looked divine as well. The food, however, was so so. Flavor was lacking a bit and I could definitely recommend some ideas. However, the small, cozy feel to the miniature diner was comforting but could use maybe 3 more feet on each side. It was a pleasant experience but not one I'd recommend to everyone. read more

Well, I had one of the worst experiences ever at the Whistle Stop. I ordered something that tasted horrible, and old - like it been made a few days ago and re-warmed. After 2 bites, I pushed it to the side and waited for the waitress, who was extremely inattentive. She whisked the plate away without asking me how it was, why I was not eating it, if there was a problem, etc. On her next pass, I told her that I didn't like it. Her response - "You should have told me when I asked you how it was." (She had never asked me that or anything of the kind!) Then she berated me for not liking a dish that other people liked, and sent the cook over who was also extremely defensive and unaccommodating. They didn't ask if they could get me anything instead, or offer to take it off my bill. Surly and mean response, horrible food and foolish business sense. If they had offered me something else or reduced the bill, I would have left with a relatively good feeling, but as it stands, I would never go back, never recommend it. I liked the tea, but it wasn't worth $16, considering that's all I actually had. read more

This place should be good. Good location. Menu reads well. But, rarely is food prepared as described. Plates frequently arrive with items missing (My last visit: 3 item omelet contained 1 item. Rather than offer to remake it correctly, they took money off the price. I guess that was easier for them, but truly made a bad impression). Frugal on home fries. So why do I keep going back. On the upside: staff, while not the best for service, is nice and well-intended, Outdoor seating (family style can be cramped but) is also nice.
