I hate sourdough bread. And my only experience with When Pigs Fly has been buying their bread from the grocery store - and every time the bread has been really heavy, hard, impossible to eat let alone make a sandwich with it. So when I found out When Pigs Fly was opening a location in Davis Square, I couldn't have cared less. But I kept hearing amazing things about their bread so I figured I would give it another try, not expecting anything. Well, their bread is AMAZING. It doesn't taste like typical sourdough. It isn't hard, like at the grocery store. It is fresh and incredibly delicious. There is no greater pleasure in life than eating fresh baked bread, and while When Pigs Fly may just be a storefront, they say they only sell loaves baked that same day. And since it is their store, the variety is dramatically greater than what you get at Stop and Shop. The Apple Cinnamon bread is perfect for dessert. Caramelized sugar gives the crust an extra crunch, and inside it is warm and gooey and chock full of fresh baked apples - not just a sprinkling like you usually get from typical loaves, but actual mountains of apples. The garlic spinach ciabatta is the perfect opposite - a savory, buttery, flaky masterpiece. I should just mention that Clear Flour is just as amazing, except they bake their breads on site, so if you want one of the best experiences you can get in Boston, stand on line Sunday morning as soon as they open and grab a few loaves while they are steaming hot from the oven. They melt in your mouth. But I was talking about When Pigs Fly. They are great too. read more

I like my bread simple: wheat, pumperknickle, sourdough.. So bear in mind that when it comes to designer breads, they're just not really my thing. But if you are, this is your place. They have really tasty breads, and are more than happy to let you sample them all. They're not cheap, as far as bread goes, but if fancy bread is your bag, it's a good way to treat yourself. read more

If you want delicious bread, this is where you need to go. Their sourdough is amazing. I was so glad to realize that they have a bakery in Davis - it was always hit or miss at the supermarket whether or not they were sold out before. read more

Considering how much I love bread it was a horrible idea to stop by this shop while visiting the area for the first time. Who can say no to a huge selection of fresh bread loaves. While swayed by interesting loaves of bread made of chocolate or bananas, i went classic and just got a honey and oat loaf to go. The bread was freshly sliced and well packaged. The bread was not only fresh but very delicious as well. Can't wait to return and try other breads. read more

incredible homemade bread! I had a party a couple of weeks ago and the bread was by far the hit. They have amazing artisan breads. check them out! read more

Delicious breads fresh. I love the sourdough and rye at the Pig. I find that the exotic breads are a bit hard to justify at $6 a loaf but the chocolate loaf was definitely worth it. Very friendly staff and free samples make this place a must stop when you are passing by. The only thing missing is some fresh butter read more

The Bread-Pudding Bread was a special when I was shopping there. I should have tasted it. Neither of us liked it and 3 bucks went into the trash. read more

Yum. The Rosemary bread that I picked up here was the more phenomenal bread I've ever eaten. Made some bruscetta with it that was just PERFECT! read more

We loved the bread. Excellent service, excellent quality, a blessing to have in your neighborhood

Everyone else has said it, and I'll just confirm it, WPF is a great place to get a fresh loaf of bread. My personal favorite is the pistachio and orange peel sweet loaf. Friendly staff and free samples makes the store a nice place to shop. I just wish that the store was local (the loaves are all baked in Maine and shipped in), and I'd prefer to keep my money local and cut down on fuel costs. read more

Love this place! I absolutely love bread, and this shop is one of the reasons why. There are so many varieties that are unique and delicious, and the staff is so friendly. If I could buy and eat bread by the loaf, this would be the place to go. read more

I love this place. I went for the first time last year with some friends... We had just come from an exercise class and when we saw the wonderful display of carbs, we just couldn't resist. The man behind the counter was very helpful as we debated the pros and cons of the different varieties. My favorite is by far the Six Grain and Pumpkin Seed bread. Great crust, delicious center. Reminds me of the bread I had when living in Germany. I'd love to see them come out with a Sunflower seed loaf! read more

FANTASTIC bread. I think the shop is fairly accessible too. Plus they leave water out for my pup to drink while I buy.

This is the best bread around! I have tried almost every flavor at this point, and have been impressed with each one. A few favorites: -chocolate bread (heat it up in the microwave just a tiny bit - yummy dessert!) -Cranberry pistachio orange (again, heat it just a bit for the flavors to really come out) -Apple cinnamon - makes fantastic french toast Even the low carb loaf is good, if you are worried about carbs. It's chock full of nuts and seeds, and makes a hearty snack with a little butter on top. The staff are always gracious (I've been to the one in both Brookline and Somerville) and are very generous with the samples. Sometimes I go in looking for just a quick taste... and come out with 5 loaves. Another plus: It freezes really well. If you are going to freeze it, ask them to slice it for you. They'll put it through the loaf slicer and then, when it's frozen, you can just pull out a few slices at a time, rather than thawing the whole loaf. Enjoy! read more

I love this place. They're very friendly and they give you samples while you're picking out your breads! I got the bread and the jellys for my family for Christmas and they were very impressed, the coffees good too. I thought it was pretty reasonably priced though I dont go out and buy loaves of bread often. read more

this bread is amazing. seriously. i always go for the sweeter breads- banana maple pecan brown sugar (to die for), cinnamon raisin (makes amazing french toast), chocolate (need i say more?), carrot cake (yum). plus, they give out free samples! if you've never tried this bread, GO GET SOME. they sell it in supermarkets, but the best/freshest is definitely at the bakeries, or at farmers markets, if you're lucky enough to live close to one that sells it. This bread is probably the most delicious stuff around, but i rarely buy it anymore because i'll eat an entire loaf in a day, which is a big problem for my wallet and my waistline. read more

The bread here is delicious! There is a great mix of traditional bread (wheat, sourdough, etc.) and more creative flavors, such as Chocolate, Apple Cinnamon, and Chipolte Black Bean. One woman in particular who works there is amazing. She will let you sample whatever you want, and you never feel like you are putting her out or trying too many flavors. There have been several times when I have added another loaf at the last minute after sampling it! read more

Don't forget the bread pudding - the lemon blueberry is amazing!

Woah...Sicilian olive and hot cherry pepper bread was unbelievable! I got my bread from the South Station Farmers market and was hooked at the first bite!. The gentleman working offered me good sized samples and then it was all history after that. :) The bread is so fresh and savory. It's all I ate for dinner with a little olive oil...perfection. It was delicious and something tells me that no matter what kind you get, it's all tasty and super fresh. I'm thinking something sweet for today's starch craving :) read more

If you like olive bread, go here its the best. If you don't screw you.

The bread is fine. I've had a few different varieties, including sourdough. I've been doing a lot of baking at home and wanted to see how it compared. I'll save my money and make my own bread from now on. :) read more

When I lived in the area (a few years ago now), this place was amazing. Based on recent reviews it seems like it hasn't changed so I want to add my input now. Loved the chocolate, apple & cinnamon and the honey wheat loaves in particular. Just overall great fresh bread every day and service was always very friendly and helpful. Loved it!! read more

I walked to Davis Sq. and decided to find this place. I ventured around and finally found it. I walked in to a warm welcome from two women who instantly offered me samples, yum! I tried a few and settled on the chocolate bread and the cinnamon raisin bread. It was great, I brought it home and put alot in the freezer and kept some out. Can't wait to go back. read more

This place has fantastic bread-- when you think about how much time and effort it would take to go through the rising/shaping/baking process to make your own, it's totally worth the price to buy the creative and delicious flavors they offer here. Mmmm, chocolate bread... I haven't purchased any of the spreads they offer, but I did get to sample a few one evening when I was in the area and stopped by. I'm thinking I may have to stop by and get a few jars of jam, so even if I can't get bread there daily (too far from my house) I can get some of the experience anyway! read more

They have the best breads....any type you can imagine, and they have free samples! They also have the best Balsamic Vinegar I've ever had- aged 12 yrs- I gave it as gifts instead of wine for the holidays from the Kittery, Maine store, and everyone has been asking where they can get more. read more

Love the bread, may be some of the Best in new England, but definately the best in Boston. Didn't think you could be addicted to a loaf of bread? wrong, one fix of this and you'll be dreaming about it day and night, so buyer beware, not for the faint of carb! read more

it was so much fun to stop by and try out all sorts of different breads! can't go wrong with the chocolate bread though--it's not too heavy on the chocolate but in the end it is very much a sweet treat. pretty expensive of course, but the service is great and the variety is awesome! super close to the davis T stop read more

Fresh and creative breads. Be sure to try the campfire cookies and donuts on Saturdays!

Unbelievable... they have stolen me from Iggy's once and for all. The bread is barely 2 hours old and they let you sample everything. The people working in the store are really nice and the selection is mind blowing. The prices are about $4-6 per loaf, and considering what they put into the bread i can't believe they don't charge more! Well worth the trip! read more

Aaaah the savory beds and oh my the sweet ones. Each loaf I have tried has been magnificent. I recommend the red pepper hummus and sun-dried tomato bread, oilve bread and the banana-maple-walnut bread. WoW! The sweet breads are great for french toast! I do wish they did half loaves then I could try different loaves more often. read more

Bread heaven! The sourdough is my go-to, but everything I've tried has been great. Their $2 Wednesdays is a great deal, and offering free samples of bread is a really classy touch. I'm not a huge fan of their cookies or pretzels, but when you make bread this good, who cares? read more

if you rate a bakery by the baguette they bake, this place is mediocre. because they don't bake on site, most of their baguettes are rock hard by the afternoon. some of the workers are also rude, which is completely unjustified. the good thing is that they offer free bread samples, and some of the breads, particularly the ones with a variety of ingredients, are inspired and tasty. read more

Delicious! We got whole grain bread in order to be healthier... but then we keep eating it during at least two meals a day, so that sort of defeats the cause of being healthy. It's just so gooooood. What a great selection of whole grain breads, too, that was so nice to find. Beautiful. read more

I will literally never buy bread anywhere else ever again. This bread is PERFECT and the best $5 I spend every week. Over-medium eggs on their soft sourdough bread is possibly my favorite thing that I have ever eaten. THIS IS REAL BREAD PEOPLE. Don't settle for that stale soggy shit in the supermarket! read more

Grocery shopping was all down for the weekend, so I used my time to make a special trip to When Pigs Fly. WOW. I walked in and was warmly greeted by two ladies behind the counter. I stared. I stared some more. I started feeling overwhelmed. I think one of the ladies sensed my angst and offered me a sample of anything I wanted. I was staring at the Apple Cinnamon so I asked for that. GOOD LORD. It tastes just like she described. A slice of apple pie. Sold, on the spot. I blurted out I want Apple Cinnamon, Banana and Chocolate bread! Then I had to stop otherwise I'll turn into a blimp. I paid the $17 while still chowing down on the huge sample she gave me then left. Considering I paid MORE at Shit ass cupcakes for such a disgusting product not two minutes earlier I became even more thoroughly disgusted with them. But you can read that review if you want. When Pigs Fly bread is worth the money and the specialty breads don't even taste like what you'd think a loaf of bread will taste like. I'll be back, OFTEN. Hopefully they can expand their kitchen into Shit ass next door. read more

This bread is amazing. You can taste everything and find special breads not sold in grocery stores.

So glad to have an artisan bread shop close by. Their ciabatta is amazing, and at $3 a loaf, it is definitely worth getting over plain sliced wonder bread for the quality and taste. Also had the sundried tomato bread ($6 - all of their specialty breads are $6), which had the perfect mix of sweet, savory, and oil. Just remember that you'll need to finish the bread quickly, because there are no preservatives. Check it out, and get LevelUp if you plan on coming often. read more

This place rocks. So many varieties. So many free samples. Such a great smell. Loaves generally range from $4 to $6.

mmmm, Kosher Bread... wish the site had more savory breads.. But yummy yummy bread... I got hooked on a sample and will be going back soon.

I have just had my first taste of the chocolate bread and the fruit and nut bread. My friend (who's son in law bought it and gave him some) shared his with me. I am 76 years old and come from a family who has always made breads. Nothing compares with both of these (but the fruit and nut will now always be my favorite now.) We will now both visit the Somerville store and will share my thoughts with you again. Lil read more
