MMMmmm. The fresh bread here is worth every penny and you always get to sample other breads when you check out. My personal favorite is the potato onion bread. All you need in life is bread and butter. A+ read more

Sadly no, it's not a real bakery, but it smells like one! My family and I have been buying When Pigs Fly bread in our supermarkets for YEARS -- we stockpile their Six Grain and Pumpkin seed, not going to lie, as that stuff flies off the shelves faster than Market Basket can restock! -- so I literally did a happy dance when I found out about this store. It took me all too long to actually come here when they were open but it was so worth it. All the breads are baked fresh that morning (alas, not on the premises) so the store is an olfactory delight. They give you slices of the breads to try... my advice is to try them all, you can't go wrong. They stock both the staple supermarket breads -- oat and honey, French, six grain, etc -- and the ones that are practically like cakes, some savory, some sweet. Their kalamata olive and roasted red pepper bread is out of this world, I eat two toasted slices and call it a meal, seriously. GO HERE NOW. read more

When Pigs Fly is SO GOOD!!! Who knew bread could be so exciting? There are so many different flavors (savory and sweet!!) and it's always so fresh and tasty. And on Saturdays their donuts are bomb! Always a treat to go in read more

I love this place. They are selling not just bread but an experience. I go in there and try 3 or 4 different kinds and then make my purchase. The apple cinnamon is to die for, just heat up the bread until it gets a little crispy and put some vanilla ice cream on in and its similar to fresh apple pie a la mode. They bake their bread everyday, so you know its fresh and they donate the bread they don't sell to charity. A great company. read more

The bread here is super fresh even though it is not baked here, rather comes off a truck from Maine every morning. We highly recommend the one with all the seeds, or the apple cinnamon or the chocolate bread if you're up for something sweet. Also the dinner rolls are yum and quite cheap. (PS. They always have lots of samples!) read more

i can not believe it took this long to get some decent bread in davis sq. as other reviewers have mentioned, the people who work here are super sweet and very helpful. So, the bread is all natural with no added fats, preservatives or dairy. In addition, its really tasty. I am particularly fond of the spinach, onion, garlic cibatta and the peasant white. The raisin bread is also fabulous. They also have an assortment of jams and jellies that are very good and make thoughtful gifts. I would give this place five stars but ... they don't have a nice italian semolina bread or a challah. that would seal the deal for me! read more

I frequent When Pigs on a bi weekly basis. I've tried a good number of their specialty breads and have not had a single complaint. For me my true favorite is the german sourdough. If you're in the are, and like fresh rustic bread then I'd defiantely give this place a try. read more

They've got a lot of bread, sweet and savory (as well as the basics), and its all really tasty. Anything with olives is a must. The chocolate bread is like an amazing fudge brownie slept with a nice sourdough loaf and had delectable children. The fruit ones aren't so sweet that you'd be sick after eating a whole loaf. I can always come in and find something I like here. read more

omg love the chocolate bread ... :) its all good here .. try as many samples as you can, some of their breads are pretty surprising!! i think last time we were at WPF we ended up with 10 loaves of bread .. it all freezes pretty well, but it is amazing when it's fresh! read more

I was definitely overwhelmed when I first walked it because they literally have loaves and loaves of bread behinds glass casing and many different kinds. After looking at everything, we finally decided on getting a loaf of sourdough and the orange, cranberry, & walnut. Both were really good so I would highly recommend coming here for bread! They also have an electric machine that can slice the bread for you perfectly. read more

Best bread in the area. Numerous free samples and always working on new flavors - this place is a cross between a mom-and-pop bakery and a mass-produced brand name. Gaining popularity day by day, this place has EXCELLENT bread and baked goods. I recommend buying a few different loaves and freezing some when you get home. I love bread, but I don't fly through it at home - so freezing works well. This stuff is great - I love their cinnamon-raisin bread best. It deserves the excellent ratings you see here. read more

What to try: *** Chocolate Sourdough Bread *** What your tastebuds will tell you: * Yummy * Slightly Sweet, if it was more moist, it would be chocolate cake * dense * milk would be lovely with the chocolate * Am I in chocolate heaven? * What the heck, is it even sourdough? What your purse/wallet will scream at you: * Ouch, I'm now thinner.... much thinner What your waistbelt will tell you: * Time to exercise again.... What your conscience will tell you * At least I made up some of the cost by trying all the free samples of the other flavors of bread... yummy! read more

We love this company. We usually pop in to the Kittery Maine store on our way up to Portland and we have eaten at their Kittery restaurant as well. We are never disappointed in the quality of the food or the high level of service. So with that being said, I have to admit that the greeting we received at the Somerville location at 630 PM Saturday afternoon was very off-putting. We wanted to buy several items including a couple of loaves of bread. When we asked the young man if we could split one of the loaves with our friends we were told no.... "we cant because all of our knives have already been washed" ...wait, what? Ok. You cant spilt a loaf of bread because it's too much to wash bread knife?? My friends left and didn't want to order anything but the bread is too good to give up on so I asked the lovely young lady at the register if she could accommodate our request and she was SO happy to oblige. She was happy and so pleasant to deal with. Fyi, Just tasted a sample of the chocolate bread on the way home and it did not disappoint. Would give 5 starts for the product but would give 2 stars for the young man we initially dealt with. Try the product it is fantastic. read more

I heard all about this place during commercials on Phantom Gourmet. I didn't even know there was one in Cambridge til I saw it on the side of Kickass cupcakes. I've been in a few times. Their french loaf is fantastic. Perfect to slice up and make appetizers or to make a gourmet sub. I love how you get to sample a bread at the checkout. I tried the chocolate loaf that was so yummy. I thought, isn't this more like dessert? They even sell it in a baking kit to make at home. Then the last time I was there I tried a banana nut/chocolate bread pudding. It was absolutely incredible, I bought a full one on the spot. The women who run this place are so sweet. I love the name and I'll be back for more! read more

Delicious and fresh, how bread should be. The quantity is perfect and the prices are great. I always know I'm going to love whatever I buy from here no matter what it is! The staff is awesome too, very helpful and friendly. read more

Holy crow, the savory cranberry bread is so good that it's hard to keep around. By far it is my favorite loaf of bread. It's got a the flavor of a really good holiday stuffing. It is perfect for turkey sandwiches, because it's savory with a sweet kick from the dried cranberries. It's even better toasted, so good. I really need to go pick up another loaf, just writing this is making me hungry. read more

I love this bread! The staff at this store are great, you can sample as much as you want without feeling like a slob, and there is a lot of variety. Delicious! read more

I freaking love this place...it quickly has become an every weekend visit now and I just cannot quit them. The selection is great and nothing beats a baguette on a lazy weekend afternoon from them. If that isn't convincing enough...two words: Chocolate Bread read more

If you can't get fresh bread, this is the next best thing....a really really close next best thing. I loved that they have a counterful of bread for samples. I tried two kinds and bought the 100% whole wheat bread. Man, was it HEAVY. That's when you know you are getting the real thing. The bread was dense, a little bit sweet, and so good. read more

I like to consider myself a bread connoisseur. So when I say that the bread at When Pigs Fly is without parallel, you can trust that I've tested my share of bread. My only gripe with this place is that the loaves are oblong, which makes the slices all different sizes. (Thus complicating my PBJ). However, this is made up for by the generous free samples available at their store. Deeeelish! read more

Don't buy the basic breads. Peasant bread: looked beautiful, tasted like nothing. Very dense, shockingly bland. Couldn't they have put the weensiest bit of salt into the dough? And the loaf's texture made it genuinely inedible the *day after* I bought it. I tried to salvage it by making croutons for a soup, but it just ruined the soup. Felt like I was gnawing on a sponge. Have you ever tried to chew a sponge? It's foul. Sourdough: not even slightly sour. Tastes like dried out Wonderbread, except more insipid. Having some experience with bread-making, I'm guessing they try to cut down on the rise-time for the dough by adding too much yeast. Cheaper for them -- saves on labor -- but it means that your bread will taste like ass within 24 hours. Maybe the dessert breads are better? read more

Most amazing fresh baked breads ever. Definitely stop in and taste some of the free samples before spending all your money on ridiculously good loaves of bread. Even if they don't have a sample out of a particular bread, they will cut you off a piece of any loaf you want to try. read more

Im afraid i don't quite share other yelpers' fondness for this place. About half the time I've bought bread here I've been disappointed. Apparently I've been ordering the wrong thing (bread not a pretzel) but this place does specialize in bread so I assumed it would be great. Once I got a loaf that was very underdone (chewy and soggy and mush in the middle) and once I got a loaf that was just unbelievably bland. The only good bread I've had was the olive loaf, which was really, really good. When I get a levelup coupon here I will come get an olive loaf, but otherwise I am not a big fan. read more

I will have to say that their bread is not bad at all. I came here during the midnight madness event. It was packed and there was little selection after the hoards of people bombarded this place. I am a big fan of their super sweet specialty loafs like the lemon blueberry and the maple pecan. They are so dense and scrumptious. We even got 10% off that day. It was pretty cool. The only thing is that they have the most expensive bread out there. I'm all for the local and organic stuff, but when it comes to regular wheat and sourdough loaves, I can't justify buying it. This is especially because I go through bread like crazy. read more

Fabulous, fresh bread!!! Been there three times in the past week. Love the garlic sesame rolls, banana nut maple bread and whole wheat with apricots and nuts!!! Friendly service as well! read more

Love the cookies here! I've often fantasized about buying their delicious-smelling loaves of bread more regularly, but my boyfriend and I don't eat enough bread between the two of us to make that work. Instead, I eat cookies. read more

Look at me I have the 100th review for "When Pigs Fly". This place has excellent bread. The chocolate bread, apple cinnamon, standard frendh bread. I could go on and on. The are always happy to give a selection of samples when you walk in. You really can't go wrong here. read more

OMG. Reasons to gain 50 pounds = When Pigs Fly. I've been a fan of their artisan breads & buying it from the supermarkets for years. What a treat it is to pick from a wide and unique selection. Kalamata olives = mmm. Plus....samples! read more

The bread from here is amazing. Toasts up amazingly. I would recommend the sourdough, cinnamon raisin, cranberry orange walnut. The chocolate is wonderful too especially for dessert. I mean carbs are the best dessert right?! read more

Bread from When Pigs Fly is seriously good. Even my 11-year old niece, when she was visiting, commented on the yummy bread (oat&honey). My husband loves the cinnamon&raisin, and lately I've found myself addicted to the whole wheat honey nut - a deliciously rich combination of dates, apricots, pecan and walnut. The only problem I have on this store is choosing which loaf to buy. About the price: of course it has to cost a little more: they're baked fresh every day, made with all organic and natural ingredients. And I believe it's better for my waistline (and overall health) than the ones from the grocery store, loaded with high frutose corn syrup and all sorts of artificial junk. Every calorie contained in this bread is worth it! read more

They offer a good variety of breads here that it's hard to choose just which one to get! Fortunately, they do offer samples of a couple of their different breads to help you in making your decision. Honestly, you really can't go wrong with any of them. I also tried one of their cookies, which was okay, but I found it to be more on the dry and 'bready' side. I typically prefer a more crunchy, chewy cookie. Regardless, I'll definitely be coming back for more of their breads! read more

Lots of great choices you can't go wrong, I got the Maple Walnut Banana and it had great texture and flavor, I want to try a new one every week! read more

This is a treasure of a store. They have a wide variety of delicious breads and always have a bunch of samples available. They are knowledgeable about the breads that they are selling and are willing to answer questions. I was recently there while the staff death with a VERY difficult customer, and I have to give them credit. All I wanted was to pay for my sourdough bread and the lady ahead me asked about 3.2 billion questions. I was ready to scream but the clerk answered all of them with a smile. In terms of price, they are not much more expensive than buying a good quality grocery store bread. Give it a try! Its worth it! read more

I had their Cranberry Orange Walnut bread on a turkey, goat cheese, onion and spinach sandwich in Kittery, ME. It was the best freakin' sandwich I ever had. So I inquired where the bread was from. "Right down the road", they said. Sure enough, there was an outlet store and a bakery not a 1/2 mile away. If heaven is supposed to be carb-filled, then I found it. WPF is da bomb! My roomie and I went, and fell in love with the chocolate bread, but didn't get it, 'cause we're both watching what we eat, but they told me where the bakery was in Somerville. Guess where I'm going today? We're planning on trying a new loaf every two weeks, with a chart and a scoring system. Though it's pretty clear which two loaves are going to reign supreme. read more

So many choices and you cant go wrong with any of them. They also sell oils, dips, and spreads too.

Must try their limited seasonal breads. For example, I can't wait for xmas because they have a glorious pear marzipan bread that is out of this world. Super fresh breads and unlimited happy sampling. I can never leave without two loaves and a couple mini bundt cakes. read more

I'm so happy that When Pigs Fly started expanding into the Boston area. They have so many delicious breads. Last week we tried some sort of seeded rye bread, which was great, and I just purchased their newest creation, cherry dark chocolate pear. I bet it will make great french toast for breakfast! Plus the location is perfect - right next door to my beloved dairy bar! That block has given a whole new meaning to the phrase "going out to pick up milk and bread." read more

Superb bread whether purchased in a supermarket or from this lovely little store. they don't have every flavor every time, that's my only complaint, but i'm not really complaining since there's always something i'll like to try. my faves are the chocolate and the 6 grain and pumpkin seed. friendly staff and they give samples as well. read more

My time in America as seen me confounded at every turn in my attempts to buy bread that is none of the following things; i)filled with high fructose corn syrup ii)filled with so many preservatives that it never seems to go stale iii)soft, fluffy and completely insubstantial I like my bread fresh, dense and preferably full of seeds so I was pretty pleased when I found a spare $10 in my coat pocket and was able to waltz in here and buy a loaf of pumpkin seed sourdough. Yes, the bread is expensive (though I offset said expense by availing myself of the $3 bread pudding with every loaf purchase offer, taking the total up to $8) and I'll certainly be propping up my bready intake with the least objectionable bread I can find in Star Market, however at least I know that when I eat this bread I won't be hungry half an hour later. Plus, the lady at the counter was lovely and let us eat at least $1 worth of samples - forget cupcakes and fancy vegetables from Harvest, this is definitely my new food indulgence when my budget permits. read more
