TLDR: come for the desserts, skip the food and milk tea... I really wanted to like this restaurant but I somehow probably ordered 2 of the worst items on the menu. House special pork belly soup (DO NOT ORDER): I do NOT recommend anyone to order the house special pork belly noodle soup; it tastes bad. The reason is because for some reason they decided to use sugar glazed pork belly in the soup which causes the entire soup to be very SWEET which overpowers the savory flavors any noodle soup I supposed to have. Strawberry "shake" (DO NOT ORDER): Firstly, if you charge $9 for a strawberry shake, it better be better than Milk Lab or Moge Tea when actually this is worse than a McDonalds strawberry shake. This "shake" tasted like a strawberry milk slushy. Maybe the normal milk teas on the menu taste better but I would do yourself a favor and just walk 2 blocks up 9th street and just go to Moge Tee if you want a milk tea. Hainan Chicken (below average): This is not how you're supposed to prepare Hainan chicken. There is a specific way the chicken is supposed to be poached and then placed in an ice bathed immediately afterwards. The Hainan chicken at Wheat was rather dry and bland. The rice is supposed to be cooked in chicken fat but they seem to serve just plain rice. The veggies are supposed to be cucumber with tomato/bok choy and garnished with green onion and cilantro. Their veggies was just cabbage. Lastly, they only made 1 of the 3 sauces that goes with the dish. They are missing the chili sauce and the thick dark soy sauce that goes with the dish. Snow Lady dessert (this was good): I'll end on a positive note, the snow lady was very good. The mochi skin was thin and the whipped cream was fluffy and the mango filling was good. But the waiter was a bit rude and it has really ticked me off. I am a teenager without a job and I am not wealthy at all. I liked the hot pepper seasoning that came with it. Wish it came with a sauce, but I dipped it in my soup from my entree. For my entree I ordered the beef noodle soup, which was braised beef. The portion was solid, with lots of noodles, and the beef was faaaaantastic, delicious and perfectly cooked to wear it just melts in your mouth. We stopped in late on Memorial Day after a long drive, and we're so glad we did! The staff were so kind, and our food was delicious. I am generally a big wimp when it comes to spicy food, but I like Szechuan/ma la pepper--my braised beef noodle soup had just the right amount of burn/tingle. The broth was delightful and clearly well-made, the noodles were fresh and perfectly cooked, and the beef was nice and tender. My SO got the crispy beef noodles, also great, and his mom got the hot and sour beef noodle soup; I was advised against trying it due to the heat, but she and my SO loved it. We also had the shu mai, which were nice. The portions were very generous--as a bonus, the take-out bowls all three of us needed are sturdy and will definitely be reused, and they gave us a pretty reusable bag with them! Thank goodness we had a reservation since the line was out the door, there must've been at least 20 people waiting to be seated. Beef Noodle Soup: Absolutely delicious. The soup base was so good we drank practically all of it. Don't be fooled by the lack of color - this is a clear bone broth that is time consuming to make and difficult to master. The braised beef was tender and flavorful, the noodles were chewy and not over cooked. And the portion size is massive for $14.99. Pork floss cake: This is a double layer cake dessert with mayo slathered in the middle and coated with salty pork floss. This might sound like a strange combination but give it a try - the creation skyrocketed a local Chinese bakery to fame a few years back. Was really excited when I saw this place open and finally got a chance to try it (for takeout). As someone who had spent a lot of time in China, I can honestly say this is the most authentic Chinese food in the Durham area. I got the beef and hot peppers noodles, pumpkin cakes, shumai, and the lemon yakult. The noodles had really good flavor and is as spicy as advertised. The noodles are a thin wheat noodle, and the texture is chewy. The pumpkin cakes were my favorite. Really reminded me of the pumpkin cakes in China, except these seem more deep fried. The inside is a very gooey mochi with red bean filling. It was perfectly sweet and chewy. The shumai I thought were very average, definitely not unique to this place. I liked my lemon yakult, and it was very refreshing paired with the spicy noodles. I think this place has so much promise, and I really hope they get good business and stay open. I have decided to give this place a try as I have come across quite a bit of mix reviews for this place. It's supporters are overjoyed that there finally is a place where it's serving more authentic quick Chinese meals. The cons? Well some friends of mine have told me that they had experienced a poor stomach/diarrhea after dinning there for multiple occasions. I don't want to judge the book by it's cover and decided to give it a try. I haven't got to the point where the food i have there is through my digestive system just yet, but I can already tell that there is a lot to be desired at this place. Yes yes yes I know that they have made some improvements over time and it's expanding in chapel hill as well. I am also aware that it had shifted away from using soggy premade/pre-processed noodle to more chewy handmade noodles in the kitchen...but there's no excuse for undercooked noodles, right? I had the tofu noodles and the broth is flat out blend. The tofu was served cold...is it coming out of the fridge directly? Do they even heat up and cook the food properly before serving it? No wonder some of my friends are having stomach problems. The service is acceptable - responsive, but not very helpful. The interior isn't much of a change from what it previously was as the pho place. 2 stars and will keep an eye on its word of mouth before paying another visit. read more
