Been to the Davenport, original location, many many times. This is Davenport plus with better seating. Third time here, first time sitting inside. Now open regularly after a series of false starts. Expanded breakfast items but didn't look too hard as I go for the usual burger, fish n chips or other sandwich. Looks like a stocked bar with lots of draft choices. Service at both spots is always been great. Naomi in Aptos is personable, helpful with menu items and specials and offers super secret squirrel desert items if she likes you! Finally a good breakfast place in Aptos.... This is an amazing breakfast place. Have not tried it for lunch or dinner yet. The service is outstanding, friendly and efficient. The food was excellent. I had the Lumberjack special- pancakes, eggs, bacon, country potatoes. The pancakes were perfect, light and fluffy, eggs done to perfection over easy, bacon was not only great but cooked extra crispy as we had requested, the country potatoes were amazing. This place was just down the street from my hotel so it was a great spot for breakfast (or any meal). The restaurant is spacious with multiple tables and a bar area. It was a bit odd when seating since no one was at the hostess station. I walked pass and checked in at the bar. I was promptly seated. I sat in a nook area just off the main dining room that overlooks the outdoor patio and the gulch behind that. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and it was crispy with just the right amount of gravy. Probably could have used a little bit more. The neat thing here is the full menu is available to order from (breakfast, lunch & dinner). Service is a bit off. Not sure where my server went after she dropped off the check. Also, they have a full bar so get that mimosa or Bloody Mary. read more

Service and ambiance were perfect. Weather and outside patio were great, Dog friendly and we saw them bring a bowl of water for other dogs. There is inside seating but it was warm in there. We were in town for a mini vacation. This place was walking distance from the hotel so we went twice. Service was great. I got the lobster omelet. It looked great, and if you like seafood, I am sure this is a great option. It was too fishy for me. The server noticed I was unhappy and offered to get me something else which I gladly accepted. My replacement omelet was good. Additionally, they have a great selection of beers on tap. Tried some local brews while we were here. The restaurant itself had indoor and outdoor seating. We had another great meal at Whale City Bakery. Everything our table ordered was really good chicken fried steak with potatoes, grilled chicken with roasted vegetables and brown rice, and the kids' chicken strips (which disappeared fast). I ordered the calamari sandwich with salad and coleslaw and it was honestly the best calamari sandwich I've ever had. Crispy, fresh, and just so good. I got a picture of that one, but the rest of the table ate their food before I even thought about taking photos. Our server Naomi was so sweet, super attentive, and really knew the menu well. She made the whole experience even better. We've always had amazing food here and they also make the best tuna salad. It's one of those places we keep going back to. We recently moved here and are making our way through some local restaurants . We decided to try the Tacos ( Taco Thursday ) and the California Benedict Eggs and both were delicious . We arrived just after 5 pm and live music was playing . By the time we left it was full inside . Great atmosphere. We had our food outside on the terrace , accompanied by a cute cat called Pretty Kitty . I don't know why people complain about the cat because it's adorable and doesn't bother anyone . Delicious, great value, and super nice staff! We took a friend out to lunch today and wanted some fish and chips. Whale City has a $12 special on Tuesdays so we decided to try it out, and they did not disappoint! The fish was super fresh, tarter sauce and cocktail sauce was homemade and we all raved about them both, and we couldn't stop eating the hand cut fries. Very generous serving and not at all greasy - was sooo good! Also, the staff were so nice and attentive. We are already planning our next visit to try our other things on the menu and want to try the outdoor seating. Highly recommend!! read more

While we usually go to the location in Davenport, this is a great alternative. Parking is a little challenging. Inside ambiance is pleasant and clean. Large outdoor patio to hang out on. Our waitress was extremely nice serving breakfast. They seemed to be a bit short/handed but the wait wasn't bad. The coffee was excellent and we love our coffee. We will return. read more

We had an ok experience at the original Whale City on Davenport, so decided to give the new Whale City in our neighborhood a try. Nice space in the former Burger location... plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. We came for brunch... * Chilaquiles with Chicken -- Tortilla chips, salsa Verde, eggs over easy, and refried black beans. It was ok. * Omelet With Mushroom Spinach Cheese & Avocado -- The omelet was on. Not particularly fluffy. We told our server we wanted them extra crispy, but them came cold and blah. When we told our server, she apologized and had them remake a new fresh hot side for us... which was 10x better... too bad they don't come this way all the time as I'm sure it would make the difference on whether people would think of them as a good reliable breakfast option in the area. Our server was great, the ambiance is good. No judgement on the bakery items yet as they are still working on getting their bakery kitchen set up for fresh bakery items. read more

I have celiac and need to eat gluten free. I ordered the artichoke omelette. When ordering I let them know that I was gluten free and they offered to cook my omelette on a separate pan. They let me know that the potatoes unfortunately are cooked on the same griddle as things with gluten so there is cross contamination. I appreciate them warning me and letting me know what they could do to make the food safe for me. The omelette was delish and I can see myself coming back next time I'm in aptos. Wow, it's kinda stunning what a left turn this place has taken. If asked a few months ago I would have given them an enthusiastic thumbs up. My favorite was calamari, but I can't even describe what was served this evening... well, maybe I'll try? A month or so ago I noticed the batter had been changed. It had been light and flaky, but became something kinda rough and heavy, like something out of a can from Sysco. I had liked that the calamari had been the real deal, with rings of the small body and even tentacles (sorry to the squeamish ;) What was served tonight... what was it? Kinda like curled chicken nuggets, although probably cuttlefish, which is a typical low budget replacement for the squid, and is often served as a "steak" (flat square), and is kinda rubbery. Well, it did taste a kinda like squid, so probably the cuttlefish. I also used to like their onion rings, but tonight the batter was the same heavy stuff as the calamari, and also kind of rubbery rings. Anyway, the whole takeout mess went down the disposer. Whale city for breakfast today was perfect. The salmon omelette with pesto, onions, cheese and herbs was fantastic. The Southern Pacific omelette with sausage and other onions was also great. English muffins were good. Sourdough toast did not seem like it was homemade but it's hard to tell. None of the pastries were offered or noted on the menu and the server did not tell us about them. We didn't see the giant tray of them until we were leaving. So next time we'll have to check out the pastries when we walk in. Overall, it was great not crowded and service was excellent. We went around 1 PM on a weekday and the service was great. Plenty of parking available too. The menu leans towards breakfast & lunch, but if you want a dinner meal (they close at 3 PM; you can have breakfast anytime) they've got you covered. A place open at 6:30 AM is rare, and Whale City is a winner no matter what time or taste you choose. read more

I had the chicken fried steak with over easy eggs and a delicious homemade toast. My wife had an omelet which was also cooked to perfection. Wow this place is bad. Had a terrible breakfast there once where the service was horrid and the smiley face pancake was a regular pancake since they forgot to put on the whip cream and berries. Then when asked, she simply brought them in a cup for the kid to put on by themselves rather than bring it back and do it herself. Apparently that was too complicated for her to figure out lol. We went back today to try the retooled menu and lunch specials- but it was literally inedible. We took one bite of the fish and chips and spit it out, the fish was so old and chewy and low-quality that we didn't even finish another bite. The fries tasted like old oil too. We even went and asked for a refund on the 2nd one - which we usually never do. Most times it's just oh well lesson learned and don't go back. But since we ate nothing due to quality control being so absent that we now had to drive somewhere else and wait and pay for another meal to actually eat. So yeah, we threw the rest away and went somewhere else. We've tried different foods and different meals on different days - didn't matter. Service was poor and food was even worse. If someone bought me a meal from here for free I probably wouldn't even partake... read more
