We were in Santa Cruz but wanted a more upscale vibe, so we drove to Aptos and found The Hideout. The restaurant offers plenty of parking along with both indoor and outdoor seating. The space is very clean and well-decorated, featuring high ceilings and fans. They feature a rotating tap for beers, and our table was located near the fireplace for added ambiance. My wife ordered the cioppino, and I went with the daily special halibut plate. Staff were super friendly and we enjoyed the experience.

Hide Piece **Hidden Gem Alert** We were actually on our way to a different restaurant for lunch after a morning hike at nearby Nisene Marks State Park when we drove by the Hideout, and the name intrigued us. After a quick Yelp search confirmed our suspicions and checking out the menu, we called an audible at the line and went here instead. This family-owned classic American restaurant is a converted '30s home and has been serving the Aptos community for over ten years (circa 2015). The current iteration is a total remodel after a catastrophic fire back in 2019 and is beautifully done. The Good: * Fairly large private lot for parking (there's more behind the building, FYI). There's also some street parking available, as well. *Building feels very modern and clean, with a relaxed environment full of (mostly) locals. * Great service by "Micaela P." *Dog-friendly heated outdoor dining *Full bar with local brews on-tap *For once I ordered the salad, and the Ahi Salad was an excellent choice. The Ahi was seared nicely, and the soba noodles with their soy-ginger dressing was fantastic. All the veggies were also very fresh. *Carissa ordered the 12oz NY-Strip steak and it was cooked perfectly medium rare and accompanied by two huge slabs of herb butter. The crispy potatoes were a fantastic and worthy side dish. They should feature those in an app with some queso and bacon bits *chef's kiss* The Meh: *Fried Artichoke app could've used more seasoning in the batter, but otherwise they were fried up beautifully and the concomitant aioli was delicious. The Ugly: *Wish this place was closer to home. But next time we're in the area, this will be where we head out to. Conclusion: Fantastic local hidden gem that's definitely worth a stop, especially if you're hiking nearby.

We were hiking in the area and called an audible. We had already picked out another restaurant for lunch but we spotted The Hideout and after checking it out on Yelp, we decided to go there instead. And we're so glad we did. The service was great and the ambiance--both the patio area and the inside of the restaurant--was lovely. Everything we ordered was fantastic. John and I pulled a switcharooni that day. I usually get a salad and he often gets a steak. But he got the ahi salad and I got the NY strip. We both got to try each other's dishes and we were impressed. The potatoes that went along with my steak were so good that I couldn't stop raving about them. And John's salad had this amazing dressing. It was the perfect finish to our wonderful morning hike. Highly recommend!

We had a lovely time at The Hideout. The vibes were perfect, and the service was excellent and friendly. The truffle fries were seriously amazing, and the fried chicken sandwich was solid as well. The mac and cheese didn't quite do it for us (overall a wee bit bland/heavy), so I'm not sure I'd get that again. Overall would return!

My second time eating at The Hideout and the food is always good. I ordered Fresh Salmon Risotto and my husband ordered The Hideout Burger. Very fresh salmon and veggies, it was amazing. The service was excellent and their ambiance is beautiful, especially their outside patio. I can't wait to come back and try more of their menu.

Still my go-to when driving south towards Monterey. Consistently tasty food, great service and they usually have a good special. Had smoked salmon morsels to start then the blackened fish tacos, which were generously portioned. Outdoor patio has heat lamps so comfy even on cool days. Gender neutral large bathrooms are always spotless. App was $18 tacos were $20, so with drink and tip it's a $50 lunch. Good value for good quality ingredients freshly prepared plus wonderful service

We're visiting the area and found The Hideout on Yelp. Even arriving at 7p on a Sunday, the place was packed. We still were greeted and seated promptly inside by the fireplace, which made it feel cozy. Our server was friendly and helpful, confirming with the kitchen that what I wanted to order was gluten-free. We ordered the prawns and salmon, switching plates halfway through. The sauce on the prawns was a bit salty to me, but spicy / nice for my partner. I really enjoyed the salmon, which was cooked slightly over medium. Both dishes came with a tasty risotto and a mix of carrots and asparagus. When we were ready to go, our server handled the check promptly, and people were still streaming in at 8p. The Hideout was very good, and we would go again when in the area.

It was a beautiful day out, so we decided to sit outside. The heaters were on, which was perfect, because it was a little cool in the shade. Our server was quick to attend to us, but we weren't ready to place any orders yet. Everything sounded good, so it was hard to decide. We finally went with the deep fried artichoke hearts, Caesar salad, and the salmon risotto. All to be shared between us. Everything tasted very good, and the ingredients were fresh. The Caesar salad was a half order, and I was surprised how big it was. Maybe it's because I don't normally order salads, so to me it was huge! Haha. The fried artichoke hearts were also so good. I didn't even need to dip it. The risotto was on point! So delicious! The salmon was perfectly cooked as well. I enjoyed my meal here. Service is quick, and the food is great.

    Cuban Sandwich with shoestring fries

Came here on a Sunday at noon with a group of 7 people. I called 30 minutes before noon and they were able to accommodate my large group with such short notice! Our server Francisco was awesome. He had one of the burgers order cut in half since two people were sharing it. He also brought an empty plate for the other person to use without being asked! He was making jokes which we all loved. I ordered the Cuban sandwich which was good. Based on other people's pictures it seems like my sandwich didn't have quite as much meat as usual. I wish the pork was a little more evenly distributed rather than just in the center of the sandwich. I also got some gristle in my ham which I was not expecting. The bread was a little dry. But the taste of the sandwich was good! The shoestring fries were nice a crispy which is how I like them. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a solid place to eat. They have ample seating outside and inside.

Bucatini and meatballs. It was awful.

I ordered the bucatini with meatballs based on the waiter's glowing recommendation of the meatballs. The dish was disappointing. The pasta sauce tasted like Prego pasta sauce from a jar. I believe that they are using food service pasta sauce and adding a few fresh vegetables to make it look made in house. The sauce was incredibly sweet like grocery store pasta sauce. The meatballs were hard from over mixing. The pork tasted gamey like bore taint. The flavor was very unpleasant. Combine the bad flavor with the bad texture and I do not understand why the waiter was raving about the meatballs. The pasta itself had about 1/4" of water at the bottom of the serving plate. This just watered down the overly sweet pasta sauce. Maybe that is the point and it's supposed to make the taste less sweet? I prefer the flavor of sauce on my pasta not sweet tomato water. The caesar salad was unpleasant. They implied that the dressing was made in house but it tastes like supermarket Caesar dressing. The chicken served on top was precooked food service chicken and was hard and dry. I didn't find any redeeming qualities about this restaurant and do not understand the good reviews and why their parking lot is full.

The Hideout is just like it's name implies - a restaurant nestled in Aptos off Highway 1 that features a great selection of American bites. I came here to celebrate a friend's birthday and it was a great experience. We sat in their outdoor patio, which was a really nice ambiance especially with the heat lamps on a chilly winter evening. There are quite a few people that will hover around but I'd argue it's still the best area in the house. I had the Hideout Salad (minus cheese and croutons on the side to make it fully vegan and plant-based) which was nice and refreshing. Loved the inclusion of pickled onions and chickpeas for protein. I also ordered a side of sweet potato fries and those were also a great hit for the table. Everyone at my table really enjoyed their salads too so I'd recommend that if you're looking for something lighter and fresh. Limited parking outside the restaurant but you can park on the streets for free like we did. Watch out for cars when crossing over to the restaurant.

A little deep along the frontage road by Highway 1, and then set back downward slope from the frontage road. This place is a hideout. On a Sunday evening in the middle of the Memorial Day weekend, this place was pretty full of diners, but our party of two only had to wait about 10 minutes for a table since we selected "first available". While we waited, I went to the bar and ordered a glass of wine. We live in the Santa Clara Valley and they have Santa Clara Valley wines on the menu so I ordered a Cabernet We usually see Santa Cruz Mountain wines, but not Santa Clara Valley wines on our menus in Santa Clara so it was a little humorous to have one of these wines on the Santa Cruz county side. My wife, however, went with the sparkling Rosé from Napa. The menu is pretty simple. Salads sandwiches, or entrées basically. My wife had the half order of the hideout house salad, which is a nice blend of greens and chickpeas, vegetables, and croutons along with an order of sweet potato fries I had the Hideout hamburger, which is a beef patty laced with bacon bits. It usually comes with blue cheese, but I ordered it with smoked Gouda and I had it with truffle fries Not really a need to go into more detail. Everything was delicious! We cleaned our plates. They have indoor seating and they have outdoor seating under heat lamps. There is a little fire pit to sit at outside while waiting for a table or you can sit at the bar. Service is good without being intrusive

Big portions, good service, good salads. Cocktails are weak. Apps were not great, my main was way too salty. Not my favorite.

The butternut curry polenta was genius and flavorful, yet needed a dash of salt. The beet greens were tender. The pomegranate sumac gastrique was yummy but there was wayyy too much and it was overly sweet. The Maitake mushroom itself was crunchy but could use some finishing salt. From a visual perspective, it was brightttt and beautiful but I wonder if being able to see the top of the mushroom would have been more appealing to the eye than the base stem. When trying all the dish's components together, the flavors danced and invited curiosity, especially with the bite of mint. A little more salt and just a drizzle of the gastrique would balance the dish perfectly I can tell the chef had fun crafting the that dish as it was seemingly the most expressive one, definitely worth a try! The weather was so gorgeous and the patio is definitely the place to sit, especially cause of all the doggos. Staff was attentive and the vibes were chill.

Loved the bright windows, open concept, clean aesthetic with seaside color vibe, and the VIEW!…read moreThere is a reason half the walls are glass: so you get a view of the beach and, depending on when you're there, the sunset. Venus is a fine dining establishment but the wait times for service once we were seated and cold service were unexpected at such a nice place. This was our first time here, so hopefully we caught this server on a bad day. She also brought out our appetizers and entree at the same time, which was shocking. Due to this, we felt like we had to eat quickly so the entree didn't get cold. We often order several plates and share all the time, and never has any other restaurant brought every dish out at once before! This was the first. **THE DETAILS** Venue: 5 stars The venue is quite beautiful. You can't beat a place that is on the same street as a beach! Location: 5 stars It is literally AT Rio Del Mar Beach! Parking wasn't terrible, but the lot is tiny, so I can see it becoming difficult to park at certain times. Crab coquettes: 1 star It was so dry, I couldn't even finish one of them. It was hard to eat. Also, you can smell the crab, but you don't taste it. I did appreciate that our server gave us a heads up that these coquettes are not made like crab cakes, but we still didn't know this was a red flag warning to not get them. (Consider this a warning, my friends!) Instruction for eating: each bite must be followed by 3 gulps of beverage. Calamari: 2 stars I looooove calamari, but the ratio of squid-to-batter was off. There was too much batter, and it was thick and over-fried that with each bite, you don't get to enjoy the squid. If you want something crunchy and salty though, this appetizer is it. Miso salmon over coconut rice: 3 stars The salmon was tender and flaky, and cooked well. The skin was crunchy and flavorful. The coconut rice, however, was very mushy, like it was cooked with too much liquid. This was a disappointment because we ordered the miso flavors of the salmon knowing it would pair well with the coconut rice, but the texture of the rice was that of baby food. The bok choy was fresh and added a brightness to the dish. All in all, it was an okay dish, but not for something costing over $30. Cocktails: 5 stars All were delicious. (Venus makes their own gin!) Service: 1 star Slowwwww like molasses. Other than seating us, which was an our fault for not having reservations, we had to wait over 15 mins for a server to acknowledge we existed, then another 15 mins to get water after she said she was going to bring us water. It was a hot day, and there was no breeze or air conditioning in the restaurant, so I mentioned to our server that I was very thirsty, but we sat there for 30 minutes at an empty table with just our menus. It was perplexing. Like I mentioned earlier, the appetizers and entree were all brought out together, which made us feel rushed to eat faster so the food wouldn't get cold. (The server should have asked if that's how we'd prefer to be served and not assume this.) Different people, not only our server, would place items on our table, like drinks, and each person did it without saying anything and without smiling. They also placed items down on the table startlingly hard. (I made a joke to my friend that they don't like us here the first time it happened, but when this happened multiple times, it was no longer funny.) **OVERALL** I think the scene is great (venue/location) and drinks are great. The food items can be hit or miss. The vibe, however, is what YOU make of it because the service is lacking. Table service needs re-training. I think Venus is a good place to go for the bar and maybe some bar food only.
