Fried Artichoke hearts
Carissa K.

We were hiking in the area and called an audible. We had already picked out another restaurant for lunch but we spotted The Hideout and after checking it out on Yelp, we decided to go there instead. And we're so glad we did. The service was great and the ambiance--both the patio area and the inside of the restaurant--was lovely. Everything we ordered was fantastic. John and I pulled a switcharooni that day. I usually get a salad and he often gets a steak. But he got the ahi salad and I got the NY strip. We both got to try each other's dishes and we were impressed. The potatoes that went along with my steak were so good that I couldn't stop raving about them. And John's salad had this amazing dressing. It was the perfect finish to our wonderful morning hike. Highly recommend!

We had a lovely time at The Hideout. The vibes were perfect, and the service was excellent and friendly. The truffle fries were seriously amazing, and the fried chicken sandwich was solid as well. The mac and cheese didn't quite do it for us (overall a wee bit bland/heavy), so I'm not sure I'd get that again. Overall would return!

Fresh Salmon Risotto and The Hideout Burger
Rossana C.

My second time eating at The Hideout and the food is always good. I ordered Fresh Salmon Risotto and my husband ordered The Hideout Burger. Very fresh salmon and veggies, it was amazing. The service was excellent and their ambiance is beautiful, especially their outside patio. I can't wait to come back and try more of their menu.

Bucatini and meatballs. It was awful.

I ordered the bucatini with meatballs based on the waiter's glowing recommendation of the meatballs. The dish was disappointing. The pasta sauce tasted like Prego pasta sauce from a jar. I believe that they are using food service pasta sauce and adding a few fresh vegetables to make it look made in house. The sauce was incredibly sweet like grocery store pasta sauce. The meatballs were hard from over mixing. The pork tasted gamey like bore taint. The flavor was very unpleasant. Combine the bad flavor with the bad texture and I do not understand why the waiter was raving about the meatballs. The pasta itself had about 1/4" of water at the bottom of the serving plate. This just watered down the overly sweet pasta sauce. Maybe that is the point and it's supposed to make the taste less sweet? I prefer the flavor of sauce on my pasta not sweet tomato water. The caesar salad was unpleasant. They implied that the dressing was made in house but it tastes like supermarket Caesar dressing. The chicken served on top was precooked food service chicken and was hard and dry. I didn't find any redeeming qualities about this restaurant and do not understand the good reviews and why their parking lot is full.

We're visiting the area and found The Hideout on Yelp. Even arriving at 7p on a Sunday, the place was packed. We still were greeted and seated promptly inside by the fireplace, which made it feel cozy. Our server was friendly and helpful, confirming with the kitchen that what I wanted to order was gluten-free. We ordered the prawns and salmon, switching plates halfway through. The sauce on the prawns was a bit salty to me, but spicy / nice for my partner. I really enjoyed the salmon, which was cooked slightly over medium. Both dishes came with a tasty risotto and a mix of carrots and asparagus. When we were ready to go, our server handled the check promptly, and people were still streaming in at 8p. The Hideout was very good, and we would go again when in the area.

Smoked salmon morsels with wasabi aioli on a bed of arugula

Still my go-to when driving south towards Monterey. Consistently tasty food, great service and they usually have a good special. Had smoked salmon morsels to start then the blackened fish tacos, which were generously portioned. Outdoor patio has heat lamps so comfy even on cool days. Gender neutral large bathrooms are always spotless. App was $18 tacos were $20, so with drink and tip it's a $50 lunch. Good value for good quality ingredients freshly prepared plus wonderful service

It was a beautiful day out, so we decided to sit outside. The heaters were on, which was perfect, because it was a little cool in the shade. Our server was quick to attend to us, but we weren't ready to place any orders yet. Everything sounded good, so it was hard to decide. We finally went with the deep fried artichoke hearts, Caesar salad, and the salmon risotto. All to be shared between us. Everything tasted very good, and the ingredients were fresh. The Caesar salad was a half order, and I was surprised how big it was. Maybe it's because I don't normally order salads, so to me it was huge! Haha. The fried artichoke hearts were also so good. I didn't even need to dip it. The risotto was on point! So delicious! The salmon was perfectly cooked as well. I enjoyed my meal here. Service is quick, and the food is great.

Cuban Sandwich with shoestring fries
Brian L.

Came here on a Sunday at noon with a group of 7 people. I called 30 minutes before noon and they were able to accommodate my large group with such short notice! Our server Francisco was awesome. He had one of the burgers order cut in half since two people were sharing it. He also brought an empty plate for the other person to use without being asked! He was making jokes which we all loved. I ordered the Cuban sandwich which was good. Based on other people's pictures it seems like my sandwich didn't have quite as much meat as usual. I wish the pork was a little more evenly distributed rather than just in the center of the sandwich. I also got some gristle in my ham which I was not expecting. The bread was a little dry. But the taste of the sandwich was good! The shoestring fries were nice a crispy which is how I like them. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a solid place to eat. They have ample seating outside and inside.

Hideout Salad

The Hideout is just like it's name implies - a restaurant nestled in Aptos off Highway 1 that features a great selection of American bites. I came here to celebrate a friend's birthday and it was a great experience. We sat in their outdoor patio, which was a really nice ambiance especially with the heat lamps on a chilly winter evening. There are quite a few people that will hover around but I'd argue it's still the best area in the house. I had the Hideout Salad (minus cheese and croutons on the side to make it fully vegan and plant-based) which was nice and refreshing. Loved the inclusion of pickled onions and chickpeas for protein. I also ordered a side of sweet potato fries and those were also a great hit for the table. Everyone at my table really enjoyed their salads too so I'd recommend that if you're looking for something lighter and fresh. Limited parking outside the restaurant but you can park on the streets for free like we did. Watch out for cars when crossing over to the restaurant.

Half order of the house salad with sweet potato fries, and sparkling rosé in the background

A little deep along the frontage road by Highway 1, and then set back downward slope from the frontage road. This place is a hideout. On a Sunday evening in the middle of the Memorial Day weekend, this place was pretty full of diners, but our party of two only had to wait about 10 minutes for a table since we selected "first available". While we waited, I went to the bar and ordered a glass of wine. We live in the Santa Clara Valley and they have Santa Clara Valley wines on the menu so I ordered a Cabernet We usually see Santa Cruz Mountain wines, but not Santa Clara Valley wines on our menus in Santa Clara so it was a little humorous to have one of these wines on the Santa Cruz county side. My wife, however, went with the sparkling Rosé from Napa. The menu is pretty simple. Salads sandwiches, or entrées basically. My wife had the half order of the hideout house salad, which is a nice blend of greens and chickpeas, vegetables, and croutons along with an order of sweet potato fries I had the Hideout hamburger, which is a beef patty laced with bacon bits. It usually comes with blue cheese, but I ordered it with smoked Gouda and I had it with truffle fries Not really a need to go into more detail. Everything was delicious! We cleaned our plates. They have indoor seating and they have outdoor seating under heat lamps. There is a little fire pit to sit at outside while waiting for a table or you can sit at the bar. Service is good without being intrusive

BLTA
Jessica M.

Came here on a Saturday night around 7:30pm. We had about a 45-minute wait for a party of six. It was pretty busy, but we expected that, and they have a nice waiting area which helped. Parking was a little crazy, though, so plan ahead. Once we were seated, we started with the chips and salsa so good! The chips were super fresh. I ordered the BLTA with fries and absolutely loved it. The bacon was thick and made the sandwich hearty and full of flavor. The fries were a little on the crispy side, but still tasty. My sister got the Cobb salad and said the candied bacon on top was the best she's ever had. The girls all loved their meals, and we each ended up taking boxes to go. I definitely recommend checking this place out great food, fun vibes, and an overall solid dining experience!

We brought an out-of-town friend who was hoping for some seafood, but the only offering was a fried fish sandwich. I was happy to see that the sandwiches came with a mixed-green salad or fries for no extra charge. My spouse ordered a Reuben. The bread was amazing and the meat was good, but it wasn't saucy enough and they skimped a little on the sauerkraut. I had a cup of white bean and leek soup with a "market" salad. The soup was delicious - I wish I'd had just a big bowl of that. The market salad was pretty phoned-in for a $16 item. A pile of mixed greens, over-dressed in vinaigrette, with a few apple slices, a couple of halved grapes, and a decent amount of feta. Kind of disappointing, but tasted fine (if boring). Drinks: 4.5 stars. Decent beer selection (some from Fruition and the usual Uncle Dave's, always a favorite). We opted for a cocktail, since it's a distillery, and had a tasty gin drink with strawberry and basil. Refreshing. A little more of a "daquerie" vibe than I was expecting. The cocktails were reasonably priced compared to other places we've eaten. Ambiance: 4.333 stars. Cute, modern place with huge windows. Nice views of the ocean, which is just across the parking lot.

This last experience dining we decided to try out a bunch of starters to share and drinks. The pitcher of beach don't kill my vibe was really good, it's like pink lemonade. I think it is premade because it came out very quickly. The crispy pork belly was the best thing we had, 10/10 recommend. It is sweet, and the mustard greens go great for a bitterness. It was such a flavorful dish. The foccacia is also delicious, it came with 3 pieces and it's warm and crunchy but soft! I really liked the shrimp cocktail, the waitress said they poach them and the texture is like buttery goodness. I swore I tasted a smokiness to them too, they definitely had some sort of seasoning on them. Would get these 3 items again!! I wasn't that into the bean and leek soup, wasn't very flavorful and I didn't finish it nor order this again. My friend also got the clam chowder and he didn't like it either, it was watery. The soups were a miss here. The calamari wasn't the best either, it's a light batter but not seasoned, the cocktail sauce was good though. Had lots of horseradish! Our server had a great personality, she was outgoing and didn't make anything awkward when we let her know we weren't feeling the soups. She handled the situation well and with grace. I would give this a 3.5 stars! I still enjoyed my meal and will return in the future.

Offerings were diverse and plentiful. Once again, I was struck with wanting all of the things. My server was accommodating with my request to taste two different white wines and two different reds throughout my meal. I opted for the Chardonnay to go with the special halibut crudo, which was outstandingly prepared. The fish itself was a bit on the fishy side (especially for halibut) but I don't fault the restaurant. The treatment of the fish was perfection. I'm a bit of a Caesar salad aficionado and considered skipping Mentone's mostly because I'd just enjoyed one the night before. But I just had to try it and I'm glad I did. It was certainly not traditional but it was very well made, even better with the added anchovies ~ although I did suffer some sticker shock when I got the bill and found that those little fish were $2 each. Ooof. Switched gears to some Pinot Noir and went for the ricotta sage browned butter ravioli, which were fabulous. I probably should have stopped there but ordered the tiramisu and it was a miss for me. Just way (way) too boozy and totally lacked balance, although it was pretty. All in all, a very nice experience ~ although very pricey for a single diner. Appetizer, salad (with the pricey little fishies), entree, dessert and two 5-ounce pours of wine left my wallet $185 lighter (with tax, tip and 4% kitchen wages surcharge). I know everything is very expensive these days, but whoa. Definitely a special occasion kind of place!
