Ive had 2 visits with the center. James has been awesome. Takes time to listen, is responsive and kind. Theyve done an oil change and a once over on my car-not as invasive as I feel was needed. Ive broken down twice needing a tow since. Thats not what I came here to talk about though. They certainly had not caused those issues, but it would have been helpull to know. They cost me time from work and money besides. My issue is with how the owner not only answered the phone but continued to speak to me when I was telling him my new dilemma (Im in bankruptcy and have struggled keeping a running vehicle. Ive learned a lot and can do much of the work myself). I have learned enough to know what I don't want to do myself. Mainly because it is now winter in freezing outside and Im without a garage. He never let me finish a sentence and was frustrated when he couldnt get the story straight. Every question he asked was biting and condescending, where if he let me finish and listened he would have had the answers. When he finally got a better picture of the issue he responded with 'I have a hard time believing that.' He went from 'thats not possible' to 'if we had done that' to 'this is what we do when that happens'. It turned into one of the situations where he said too much because he thought I didn't understand what he was saying. Looking at Google and the description-its an absolute lie. All of the part stores in the area know me. By name. And Ive taught the young bucks behind the counter a thing or two. I am smart enough to ask about the things that I don't know and I know how to ask nicely. He'd begrudgingly told me to make it in by 7:15 am to fit me in. Didnt offer the work for free (removing the leaking oil drain plug that they didnt use a crush washer with and is not coming out), didnt go into what could may be done to fix it and what they can offer for any price. I know how to fix it, his customer services was the worst Ive experienced in a long time. read more

I have very rarely experienced service this good. I dropped my car off overnight on Monday, James called me later that day with a diagnosis, pricing, and clear explanation of the issues I was having. I added another request at that point, he accommodated my request, and STILL the repair was done the next morning. I should also note that this same repair on the other side of the car (done at the dealership a year ago) cost us $1100. At Westside it was $550 - with better communication, clarity, and speed. I have definitely found my new mechanic, and will be recommending Westside in the future! read more

I started taking my 2002 Jetta TDI here a couple of years ago after moving to the west side. Their work has consistently been better than my previous mechanic, they're quite good at working with multiple budgets ("This is a NECESSARY repair" vs "This needs to be fixed in the next 6-12mo" if you don't have a lot of money on hand, rather than adding unnecessary extras. The online appointment system on their website, as well as ability to email and discuss problems instead of relying on phone tag has also been quite handy. They came on the recommendation of two different friends, and I've since recommended them to a number of friends myself. read more

I took my car here at the recommendation of quite a few folks that had been in the area for a while. Coming to Madison from a small town, I'm used to the kind of honest, no-BS that you get when the mechanic lives a few blocks away. West Side Service Center delivers on that. Never before have I had such an honest "If it were me, I would ______" type of recommendation that ended in holding off on an unnecessary repair. My engine light was on and there was a bit of rattling. Within a day, they pinpointed it all to three pieces that could use repair--from $200 to $1100 each. After describing each item, the mechanic [I can't remember his name] would let me know if it was a safety concern, would impact fuel economy/engine health, or would simply be for convenience. In the end, there was only one necessary repair having only dropped ~$250. Considering there was a potential for $1400 more that they stood to gain had they talked me into it, they earned my trust. read more

I drop my car off in the morning, get a call in a few hours regarding what needs to be done and pick it up in the afternoon. A friend recommended this shop after their own great experience. My windshield wipers stopped working in winter which was unfortunate timing. The fuse seemed to be intact and I was preparing for a costly fix of the windshield wiper motors. Westside Service Center got me in the next day for an appointment and I was able to pick up my car later that evening. Pick-up and drop-off was easy with their COVID guidelines. Turns out-- I had two fuses for the wipers and the one I didn't check needed to be replaced. The workers didn't make me feel stupid about this mistake (even though I did) and the pricing was beyond reasonable. Will be returning if ever needed in the future! read more

The worst service ever!!!! I took my car in to have it checked for either tires or alignment. I spoke to a technician and he told and he said bring it in. Never during that conversation did he mention charging me to assess my car. So, I brought my car in, talked to that same guy, once again never did he mention charging me for an assessment. Also, I never signed anything that indicated that I was acknowledging a charge for an assessment. I got a call after he took a look at my car and he quoted me a really I high price for tires (more than a thousand with alignment). I told him I'd call him right back in a bit that I'd have to check on something. Never in that conversation either did he mention an assessment charge. So, I called him right back (11:30) to let him know that I would not be wanting service from them and that since there hours are from 7-3 that he could lock my key in the car and that I'd be by after 5:00 to pick my car up. I let him know that I had a second key. He said "fine." Never once during that conversation did he mention an assessment charge. I had a friend drive me out to the garage after work so I could pick up my car, but my car was inside the garage and was now being held hostage As they were closed. I listened to my voicemail and I hear that he left a message at 2:45 saying that they were going to close in 15 minutes and that I could come in and pick up my car and pay this elusive charge. That was the first I heard about a charge, and yet he still didn't say how much it was. I called them and left two messages, but I never got a call back. I had no vehicle that night or the next morning to get to work. I had a friend drive me there the next morning, and there my car was outside, but he still had my extra key. So, I went in to ask for my key and he said with an attitude that I could have it if I paid his charge (Still didn't tell me how much this charge was). I let him know that he never discussed a charge at any point and that I would have been happy to have paid it if he had discussed it, or even let me know that he was planning on charging one. He said "what do you expect" I said "a little honesty." He also lied and said that I never told him that I'd be by that previous night to pick pick up my car and to leave the key in it. At this point he's yelling at me. So, I just said "give me my key" and said "No" so I yelled back at him "Give me my key". He finally relented and gave me my key, but he had to yell at me "never come here again" I said "No Problem with that" as I was walking out the door he was screaming #%¥%#FU at me. Still even now, I have no idea how much this mystical charge was for. Do yourself a favor never go there!!!! read more

They explained what was going on with my car by breaking down what was and was not a safety risk so I could prioritize the repairs, they quoted me a fair price and when it came time to pay they explained it came out to be less than what they quoted instead of pocketing the difference. I almost don't want to leave a review because I don't want them to get to busy lol! A friend recommended them when I wanted to get my car looked over because it had just topped 100,000 miles and I wanted to make sure everything was good because I know nothing about cars. My dad had given me a list of things he thought I might need to get done. The guys here said that everything, including the things on the list from my father, was in good shape. Recommended no repairs. All they had to do was take one of the things on the list and say it needed repairs and I would have believed them. Their honesty won me over. I've seen them since for a check engine light and a bad tire sensor. Again, gave honest opinions of what needed to be fixed and what I could get away without doing. I was visiting Madison and had to leave on a Friday. That morning something sounded bad in my truck. Dealers couldn't see me for a number of days. I found Westside in Yelp with positive reviews and called them. Amazingly they found time to see me, checked it out, and discovered the problem so I could leave later that morning. Amazingly kind customer service and they were wonderfully fair on price. I don't know if I have ever received so much value for car service in my 59 years. I came because of the reviews, and will be staying because of the service. When my interior fan motor died just as the cold weather arrived, Firestone saw me coming and tried to charge me an outrageous amount to fix it - and said they'd have to wait a day to get the part. Westside Service gave me a quote that was less than half, and then performed the work for even LESS than the quote in about an hour.
