I had an evap leak in my fuel system that caused a pesky 'gas cap' light to come on in addition to the 'check engine' light. I went to them to get it taken care of and they got the job done. They took great care of me to such an extent that I want to bring my vehicle back for any maintenance that needs to be done. Pros: The front desk guy: very friendly, he remembers the clients and interacts with them on a personal level. My vehicle was not completely repaired on the first try. I called when the issue resurfaced and he immediately remembered who I was, expressed concern, and scheduled a follow up appointment. Their attitude: it's evident that they are committed to getting the job done right. It seems as if every person working there has a genuine love and interest for what they do. Their integrity: you have to worry about whether mechanics are trying to upsell you on things you do not need a lot of times. This was not the case here whatsoever. I did not get the "greedy" vibe from this place. They were genuinely concerned with fixing what the issue was and sending me on the way from there. Cons: I'm short on that right now. It was an all around positive experience. read more

Great local shop that we trust to bring our cars to. We know they are honest with estimates and the work they do. Best to plan ahead on when maintenance is needed so they can fit us in for appts. There is a reason they are so booked up - they are the best! read more

Went today to figure out best approach to shield on bottom of car coming loose. Initially offered to take it off for free before realizing there were more problems, ended up only costing $15 for cost of materials. Interacted with Tyler, very nice very helpful - explained everything he was doing and why and didn't overcharge- if I have another problem I'd come back here! read more

Experienced mechanics who do quality work but very inflexible with scheduling. They don't seem the least bit concerned about customer inconvenience. Gave them three chances and it got to be too frustrating. Told them I'm not coming back and they didn't didn't seem to care about lost business. They've got their way of doing things and aren't about to make any accommodations. Don't expect apologies or offers of money off for dissatisfaction. read more

My daughter has a car at college in Madison. She decided to drive to Texas for spring break and the SUV had not been serviced in almost 18 months since buying on CarMax. Hansen's did an amazing job of inspecting and getting the vehicle ready for the 2500 mile round trip. They did it on short notice, only needed for 2 days and had it ready 2 days before she left. It had 130k miles so needed new brakes, also discovered a rear window leak with water pooling. This may have been the source of a battery issue. I also decided last minute to replace alternator and they made it happen in time. The trip was successful with zero vehicle issues. Hansen's will be the only service shop for her. read more

This auto services try to rip me off . I told them how much for the labor for headlight installation fee ? he try to charge me $200 OMG it's a 20 minutes installation work so I go head and bought me a drill. Took me 15 minutes installing my own headlights ez pice of cake. I know that they don't like dumb Asian folks lucky know how to fixed my own car because. I don't recommend anybody who doesn't know them don't service your car there. read more

Always the best service and the only place I will take our vehicles. They are honest and trustworthy and demonstrate what integrity and good character looks like. Thank you Jon for the amazing service through the years!!! read more

Honesty and experience at it's finest, and ran by quality people. Would absolutely reccomend.

Pleasant, friendly, fast, and explained things so I understood them. I'll definitely bring the car here for needed upkeep or repair.

I haven't done many reviews on Yelp, but I think my experience with Hansen's is worthy of my time. What I thought was a ignition problem, turned out to be a simple" dead battery". They assessed the situation quickly and had my auto back to me in no time. The staff was great and kind. I would definitely recommend taking your car to this family shop for your auto needs. read more

Great place for car work. Learned things about my car the previous couple mechanics never mentioned. Great service and honest people. Will definitely be going back. read more

This place is great! Great guys, who don't overcharge or try and con you into getting more work done on your car. As a woman I find it important to be treated fairly and honestly. Most mechanics see a woman and they pump their fists up and down yelling CHA-CHING! I have NEVER encountered this at Hansen's. Today I brought my car in because the low tire light came on. They were up front about the guestimated cost. Took no time at all...they were able to get my car in right away. After a valve stem replacement, I paid the cost that was slightly under estimate and boogied out. I'm glad Hansen's exists as I don't like giving my $ to corporate owned shops. So if you are in the area and that dreaded light comes on in your car...take it (or have it towed) to Hansen's. read more

This place rocks! Look I do a lot of my own car repairs and after changing out some tie rods on both sides of the Honda Pilot I thought it would be a good idea to get the alignment taken care of. So off to Hansen's goes my beautiful wife and they treated her perfectly! Some garages are full of gruff, cranky, sometimes stinky staff....not Hansen's. They took the extra time to fully explain the process to M and went the extra mile tightening down a bolt that I hadn't quite torqued properly :) I will definitely check them out again in the future and I highly recommend you give them a try yourself. :) read more

I can't say enough about Hansen's. My 2007 Xterra has entered the nickel and dime phase of life. I brought it in for its most recent issue - small leak in the oil cooler seal - and an oil change. Price was right and they, as always, took extra steps to make sure things were all good like blowing debris out of the radiator grill, filling the tires, and visual inspection of the underside to let me know of any potential upcoming issues. Honestly, if you are looking for trustworthy, friendly, competent mechanics this is the place to go. It's that "small town garage" feel. They are always busy and hopping yet they do their best to accommodate you. Do yourself and your wallet a favor, make Hansen's your primary garage. I live all the way across town but it's worth it. read more

Can't recommend this place enough. Being new in Madison, I wanted to find a place that was fair and had good quality service. The guys here take great care of anyone that comes in, and will walk you through every step of what they're doing. As my car is older, they gave me some really honest opinions about what was and wasn't worth getting fixed, and didn't ever push me to do anything that wasn't necessary. Outstanding service and great people. I won't be going anywhere else. read more

This mechanic shop offers very reasonable prices and good service. For putting on four tires, they charged less than some other places I called. Plus they honored the labor charge I was billed last year so I saved money. When I called this winter, the owner recognized me from earlier this year, so he squeezed in my car for repairs even though they were booked till 3 days later. Great service. read more

Will go back again! Two Toyota dealers quoted me at over $700 to get my 2008 Prius breaks fixed and also told me that $800 worth of other repairs were needed. The dealership auto shops did not show me anything on my car or explain the specifics of what was needed. I went to Hansen's where I was treated great! They looked at my car right away and then took me out in the garage to have me look and feel my own breaks and what breaks should feel like to see why I needed a repair. They quoted and fixed the breaks for $380 with no additional costs or suggested repairs. They fixed the car fast and it works like a charm. I'll be back to Hansen's! read more

Eric P. here....I can't say enough good things about Hansen's. Just last week I was out delivering Meals on Wheels and all of a sudden I discovered my trunk would not shut. (a disaster in this situation) I stopped by Hansen's and John (the owner) dropped everything, diagnosed the problem, ordered the part (a trunk lid actuator switch), and sealed my trunk shut. Less than 24 hours later it was totally repaired! This is just one of many positive encounters with Hansen's. They have even come to my house to jump start my car when I was laid up with a torn knee tendon. I used to be in the car biz and I have seen it all when it comes to slime ball repair guys. These guys are above reproach and a great addition to the neighborhood. read more

Quick service, nice crew, fairly priced. Went in to have a headlight changed. I was having difficulty doing it on my own due to the awkward design of the light placement. Even had a couple friends try and they failed as well. I called Hansen's shop and they told me I could come right in. I believe the gentleman that helped me was named John. Took him 5 seconds to pull the headlight out. Turned out I needed a new socket as well because the original had melted. They were able to get a new one put in within 20 minutes. It was great! Good to have both headlights back. Definitely will go back when the other one fails read more

This place is the only one I trust in Madison. They're honest, have fair prices and work hard to take care of their customers. Super friendly people that I'd recommend to anyone. read more

I had a problem with the windshield washer pump on my old Subaru, and called them on a Monday morning at about 8 am. They were swamped, but told me to bring it in. By 10:30 I had a reasonable quote, and by 1:30 the part had been ordered and installed. They were friendly and easy to work with. I will definitely take my car back to them. read more

Yesterday I took my car in to Hansen's for the 3rd or 4th time since moving to Madison. John and Joe are both awesome, treat me well, and my car is running better than ever. You simply won't find a better place, with nicer people, or with better prices. Thanks so much you guys!! read more

Awesome place! Needed some repairs on my car's CV axle and ball joint before a long trip next week. Brought it in at 8 AM, done by 5 PM that same day! Best quote I received out of 5 quotes, very great and personable staff. No upselling which was a plus since I'm a young girl that doesn't know much about cars to begin with. Overall great service, I'll be sure to recommend them to anyone I know! read more

Great personal service and reasonable prices. Took my 92 van for an exhaust repair unexpectedly. They took a look immediately, offered two options and completely understood when I took the $80 repair over the expensive one. Completely supportive of "drive it til it drops" owners. Definitely will be a repeat customer. read more

I was charged $300 for a $140 part. This upcharge is on the very extreme end of upcharges. The local dealership would have done the same repair for nearly half the price. Get a 2nd opinion before you let this shop repair your vehicle. I like to walk away feeling as though I was treated fairly, even after bringing up my concerns to the guy at the front, I feel like I was robbed. I will not be bringing my business here anymore. read more

I tell everyone I know to go to Hanson's Auto. John Hansen is the most Honest guy and no fluff. He is a hands on owner with Great prices. You can't go wrong at Hansen's! read more

The best mechanics I've ever known. Hansen's has taken care of me with honesty and integrity for several vehicles over ten years. Their work is the very best, and I've always gotten a detailed discussion of everything, so I've always been able to make informed decisions about the work. I would recommend Hansen's to anyone looking for a really good mechanic who actually stands behind their work -- they are hard to find. read more

GREAT Experience. Service was fantastic. I am a student at UW Madison and had new brakes installed back home before returning to school. I started having problems with my brand new brakes Thursday night here in Madison. Friday morning I called HANSEN'S Auto at 7:30AM and they worked me into their schedule. In a matter of hours they documented everything the repair shop back home did wrong, took pictures of the damage, and fixed my car! If you're looking for a quality repair shop, the answer is Hansen's Auto! read more

Honest, hardworking crew that was very helpful on the phone and in person. I had some bolts loose after my dad did some brake work on my car. They got me in early since they were booked for the day since I had to drive out of town that afternoon. Reasonable rates, friendly service and fixed the repair in under an hour. Couldn't have asked for better service on such short notice! read more

I'm sharing my personal thanks in a place I would search for a quality spot, when I don't know. My dad says a big Thank You from me to you. You've serviced my 02 Honda Accord aka Boosy while I've been in Madison the last 2-years while my partner was in grad school. Joe and John have always had my back. I've continually referred to you as being as problem-solving as the Emergency Room doctors, as you've helped me in many acute and critical "life" decisions for ol' Boosy, as she got through her last 50,000 miles. Hansen's has provided dependable service to see us to Florida for holiday and other cross country ventures to see family... and they've said when it was not good to do those cross country trips too. Honest, dependable, accommodating, and knowledgable are ways I describe your care- every time. Thank you for making me feel safe. Thank you for allowing your guys a 1-hour lunch break. Thank you for smiling when I am crying and not sure if I should pay that $$ or make the switch to a new car. Thank you for being empathetic and for always figuring in a 15-minute window for seeing Ol'Boosy for one shake, rattle, or chuggin' reason or another. You get the idea. These guys are genius and good. All the things you want in a mechanic. I especially recommend reading the article on the office wall about John in sub -0 degree weather servicing all of Madison a few years ago or so. Seems like they've been good people, for quite a while. May you continue to get good business and "save lives"! read more

They are wonderful! Bring your car here! I just moved here from Chicago and I've been going to the same family-owned mechanic for years (YEARS) so i was nervous to find someone here. My car (a VW, just to complicate things) started making a really bad noise on Monday. I called Hansen's right before closing and they patiently talked to me about the problem. They told me to bring it in that night or in the morning and they'd take a look at it. They looked at it and gave me a fair estimate, then did it for less than the estimate AND fixed a tire that was in my trunk, put it back on my car, and put my spare back in my trunk without me asking and without any extra charge! When I came to pick up my car they were extremely friendly. They answered my questions and didn't try to rush me out even though I once again got there not long before closing. I will definitely be taking my car back to Hansen's and you should too! read more

Hansen's has kept our cars going for years. They are professional, honest and the nicest people you would ever want to deal with. Our Pathfinder had over 250,000 miles on it and it would never have lasted that long without their care. When we had to replace it last month, it was at their urging. They are so honest that they told us that it was not worth keeping on the road, even though they knew that if we bought a new car - we would have to have it serviced at the dealership. Thank God we have another used car that will be serviced by them because we enjoy their company. I would never hesitate to recommend them to friends. read more

I had brought my Hyundai in to the dealer for an oil change because they had sent me a $20 off coupon and they offered an "express oil change" service. When I got there, they told me that I needed an appointment. So I decided to throw the coupon away and go to Hansen's which is very close to my house and had been recommended by several people I know. They did the oil change for a fair price (probably about the same cost as I would have paid after the coupon was applied at the dealer). I sat there and waited as a customer came in who was clearly hurting and would need surgery the coming week. They told him that they would put his charges on his payment schedule. Twenty minutes after he left he returned and told the owner that he was unable to turn the key on his car. The owner went out there and helped him. These are compassionate and honest people. It's a family business and the owners' son was one of the mechanics. Go here and you can trust that you're getting high quality service for a fair price. read more
