Dutch's is great. The mechanics are very honest and straightforward. The shop is appointment-only and it's a small shop--two mechanics and no other staff--so you need to text or email ahead of time for bringing your car in. Right now appointments are booking roughly a week out. On Fridays the shop is open 8:30am-12pm, not until 5pm like it is currently listed on here. They also have a dog who likes people but not other dogs, so you can't bring your dog with you. I like this place a lot and I hope they stay open for a long time. read more

I had brought my car in for an oil change. I was told that my tires should get replaced sometime in the future. Not going to change the number of stars in my original review because they still do excellent work for a good price and don't try to do unnecessary repairs...BUT folks should be aware that it now takes one to two weeks to get an appointment with them. Nan takes her relationships with her customers extremely seriously and will go out of her way to make sure you have all the information you need and are getting the best treatment at the best cost possible. They'll walk you through everything that needs to be done and give you different options at different price ranges, which I've never had a mechanic do before. By far the best auto shop I've ever been to, and quite possibly the best experience I've had getting service in any industry. The other reviews have got it spot on- everyone is extremely kind, patient, willing to answer questions, and (most importantly for a female with car problems) not condescending. I've been in 4 times for various issues, and have left every time feeling great and with a car that runs better than before. They're very upfront - today they recommended me to another shop that would be able to do the job more efficiently than them - rather than trying and failing or spending a lot of time and money on an issue they don't specialize in. Every price is fair - they detail what cost is parts and what is labor, and it's a great rate - and the pride they take in their work gives me confidence in it as well. They even work with my schedule, allowing me to drop my car off after hours and come back for it right before they close. I will be a dedicated customer for as long as I own a car in Madison. Nan and her crew are complete badasses. I leave feeling empowered, instead of previous auto shops that I would leave (occasionally in tears) feeling broke and belittled. I only wish I could bring in other aspects of my life to be fixed by Dutch's!!! read more

I went in to the Dutch's experience so wanting to love and support this business and though I had heard a few things about negative personality issues with some of the staff, that wasn't going to prevent me from giving them a shot. I had my car towed in to their shop for an electronic issue, brakes, and a tire fix. The car wouldn't stay running and nobody at that time mentioned they didn't have the equipment to diagnose those problems. When I didn't hear anything back after a few days I was told they still didn't have a diagnosis and was asked to be patient, they were in the middle of a move. On day 10 when I checked in there still wasn't a diagnosis but they did give me a beater loaner after I explained I lived in a rural area and didn't have a second car in my household. Every time I'd drive by the shop, I'd see my car still sitting in the same spot in the back parking lot, no tracks in the snow showing it had moved, and the tire still flat. Twice I had to relock the doors as they had left them all open. Nearly a month in I was told they didn't have the diagnostic equipment to fix the issue and I'm still wondering why it took that long to tell me. Not one thing was fixed on this car in that entire time. When I went to return the loaner on the day they requested I was told I had less than 24 hours to get my car out of their back parking lot or they'd push it out on the street. Apparently their lease was up but nobody had told me that until that day, when it was the coldest on record and AAA wasn't doing any non-emergency tows. They didn't care. I managed to get the car towed back to my farm with the tire still flat and new pair of jumper cables I had recently purchased missing from the trunk. I realize there was a move going on at the time my car was there but regardless of that, automotive care will always be a customer service business. It's not hard to be kind, let alone extend an apology, especially when customers are patient as I was. There are too many other auto shops in Madison to have to take this kind of incompetence and rudeness. I've never written a negative review before on anyone and realize this will probably be taken down along with the other bad ones that no longer exist on their review page but I really really do not want this to happen to anyone else. Stick to the professionals who are honest and know what they're doing. read more

I highly recommend Dutch's Auto to everybody! I took my 1998 Honda Civic there when it was having severe performance and gas mileage issues (and the check engine light was on). They diagnosed it as a cracked catalytic converter that needed to be replaced. I had actually already read the check engine code off previously, and knew that it was related to the catalytic converter, so I had already gotten estimates. The place I normally take my car to in Verona estimated ~$1,000 to do the replacement; Dutch's was able to fully replace the catalytic converter, change the oil, and change the brakepads for half of that! Nan showed the catalytic converter to me after they replaced it, and it had a huge crack along the side of it. She explained the effect that had on the engine; I really like that they take the time to explain these sorts of things. I also took my wife's Ford Escape Hybrid there when there was an issue with her steering column (it was making a clicking noise when turning). Nan gave me a call and let me know that they were unable to diagnose the issue due to their unfamiliarity with hybrid internals, and they wouldn't charge me for their time looking into it. I appreciated their honesty in admitting that - better than a mechanic messing around when they don't know what they're doing and breaking something. I also recommended them to my brother when his car needed an oil change and his brakes looked at, and they did a great job for him as well. The only minor knock I have is that I had to call and check on the status of my car after about a week of not hearing anything back, which I think is probably due to how busy they are due to the excellent work they do and their very reasonable prices. Car repairs typically bring me to tears because I often feel stupid, taken advantage of, and helpless. Dutch's Auto is NOT that place. The mostly-female crew strives to educate customers with honesty and transparency. Having a very sick 99 Subaru station wagon led me to visit Dutch's often, though they were always clear about what repairs were a necessity and which were optional. Many times, I was brought out to the shop to see my car in the air and was shown what was in need of fixing and the exact parts that were in disrepair. They also were understanding on the financial strife that cars can put us through, and worked with me on payment plans as needed. I found Dutch's recently after it was suggested to me by a friend who saw glowing reviews on the Nextdoor app. This place is in my neighborhood so I decided to check it out. I recently received from my usual mechanic a pretty outrageous seeming quote for some work I needed done, I decided to get a second opinion and quote to compare pricing etc. this is what brought me into Dutch's. I instantly felt comfortable in their space and talking to their staff. They were up front with me and told me they don't price match but they are honest and fair and their aim is to make their customers happy and do good work. I really liked this approach from a mechanic. It seems so simple but I am not sure in the last two states I have lived in have I ever felt like I could trust a mechanic from my first meeting. I decided to schedule to have the work done here instead of my usual mechanic... the cost for the work was almost $200 less than I was originally quoted! I am so glad to have found Dutch's and I will be going back to get more work done on my car very soon! read more

These folks don't mess around. I'm leaving the state and asked for a dignostic. All around they are quite informative and honest about what they can and cannot do. What I find reassuring is that, in the event they locate something they can't resolve...they locate a resource that can. In some cases they make the calls for you. It reminds you of a time when small business owners thrived with excellent customer service and support. I've used this garage two times in as many weeks. The first was for a standard oil change which was fast and cheap and excellent. The second was because my master/slave cylinders died on me. I had my car towed to them overnight. Even though they were very busy, they managed to get my car done extremely quickly and for an extremely reasonable price. I was worried my whole clutch had blown and it would cost me $thousands and would take 2 weeks. Instead, they had it done in 2 days for $200. Great service, great shop. Being a female who was relatively new in town, finding a shop that I trusted not to try to take advantage of me and who did such great work for such a great price... that's amazing. So happy - and this is from someone who gets extremely stressed out by the mere thought of having to take my car into the shop. read more

I started out with Dutch's on the wrong foot. I bought a car and included in the purchase were front brake rotors, pads and guide pins. I asked Dutch's to put them on for me. I said I know it is a no-no to bring your own parts to a repair shop. The response was "We stand by our work". I know they were not thrilled. Nevertheless, they did the repairs, and even have a night drop for keys so I could drop off my car after work (I work late nights). This way, they could start work on it in the early AM while I was still asleep. My brakes are done, the cost was SUPER reasonable, and now I have started what I know will be a long, dependable and trustworthy relationship. I promised Nan I'd never bring in my own parts again. THIS IS BAD. DO NOT DO THIS, PEOPLE. Before I drove off, we talked for almost 30 minutes about what other work my car needs, and I got estimates for each item. These folks know their stuff. 28 years of car repair experience is nothing to sneeze at. I know that I will always get outstanding, affordable, and honest service from Dutch's Auto. Lastly: if you need your car back by a certain time, it is your obligation to tell your mechanic. It is not their job to read your mind and know when you need it by. It is also up to you to talk about estimates, and if it is more than you were "led to believe", then you can ASK why that is. Sometimes work can take more hours than originally expected, especially on an older car. Communication is key. read more

Due to the good reviews I've brought in 2 vehicles to be fixed. After the 1st "fix" I didn't make it out of the parking lot as the issue had not been fixed. They fixed the issue again and it cost us more cash for them to do so. I considered this a fluke. The same poor service happened to the second vehicle. I brought it in to get fixed and didn't even make it a block before I realized something was really wrong with the car still. I honestly wonder if they even drove the car. They told me that what's wrong with it now was not what was asked to be fixed and they would need to charge another assessment fee. Initially, I had told them the breaks seem to be locked up and it is probably the back right tire. Now it seems to be the front tires that are the issue. I couldn't drive it to know for sure and thought they would tell me what needed to be fixed. Because I didn't tell them this up front they didn't even look at. The real problem here is that the car is not worth that much in the first place and I needed an accurate assessment up front to determine if the car was worth fixing. I did tell them this up front! Since the car is not worth putting any more money into we ultimately threw away $700. They are nice people and seem honest but I could never in good conscience recommend their services. read more

My Chevy Aveo needs a new timing belt and after being told it would cost $700 to replace it and it's water pump I thought I'd call around to see if that was the normal pricing for something like that. I called about 5 places all giving me a qoute around $600. They also couldn't get me in until after the weekend. When I called Dutchs she qouted me for $200 less and could have me in the next day! I just dropped off my aveo but I am confident after talking to the owner (who is a no bullshit kind of women, which I appreciate) I know my car will be in great hands. Dutch's Auto Service prices are approaching ridiculous. Ask about their "hidden costs" when getting estimates. A couple of months ago a friend was waiting for his repair at my house (one block from their North side location). The estimate on his repairs was around $300.00. Final charge was over $500.00! My wife recently got an oil change / tire rotation; the bill was $50.00! Today, I called for an estimate on a tire pressure, slow-leak. She told me around $18.00. I even said "So, around 20 bucks then?" She said, "Yes". After a fifteen minute wait, the total charge was $33.23! Of course I asked for an itemization. The invoice says: $18.00 for "bead" seal around tire; Tire wheel weight: $3.50. Shop supplies: $6.00. Hazardous materials: $4.00 (both of these combined were listed on invoice as "Parts"). Tax: $1.73. So, I asked, "What exactly are shop supplies and hazardous materials?" She told me that that is a charge they put on everything that goes through the shop! (not an answer to the question). Seems to me a classic "Bait and Switch. Needless to say, I will not be recommending Dutch's to anyone, and convenient or not, we are done with Dutch's Auto Service! read more

Took my car to Dutch's about 15 minutes before they closed to get a headlight replaced. Nan and Crystal were super nice and switched out the headlight on the spot to avoid me having to leave my car there over night. The whole thing took about 10 minutes and only cost $25, plus they were cracking jokes the whole time so it made the experience fun. I had a very pleasant experience today. Nothing needed to be done to my car and that's exactly what they told me. Just a silly maintenance light that comes on periodically. Aside from that, their patrons were singing their praises as soon as I sat down on their infinitely comfortable couches. They seem to be focused on honesty, integrity and education. I noticed they even offer auto education classes for $40. "Don't get taken for a ride, you're the driver!" I would rate Dutch's as the best Auto Repair service that I have ever taken my car to. We were moving cross country from Washington State. In the middle of our trip, our 2007 Hyundai Elantra was making a terrible knocking noise when turning the steering wheel. We took it Dutch's and I could not have been more happy or satisfied as a customer with their help. Since it could not be fixed in one day and the parts were not on hand so we dropped off our car and continued the rest of our trip for another 500 miles. Then drove back several days later to pick up our car. We were not over charged, they fixed the problem and they they took care of us. The whole crew at Dutch's was amazing! I didn't even know it was possible, but the motor (or transmission?) went out in my windshield wiper motor...ugh. I went to two different mechanics that each told me the part alone would be $700!!! That's not what anyone wants right before Christmas. I called Dutch's to see if they could help and Nan came to my rescue. She talked to me on the phone, emailed back and forth with me about options and quickly found a way to help. She found the part my car needed and literally fixed the damn thing in like an hour. I honestly can't say enough nice things and genuinely felt so grateful for all of the help, concern, flexibility and cost savings. I thought it would cost me over a $1000 to get the thing fixed with parts and labor, but Nan got everything taken care of for less than $200. Thank you, Nan!! I loved the service I got from Dutch's Auto! I dropped my car off for an oil change and also wrote down some other car issues/concerns I had and Nan was so great at addressing them. Oil changes w/regular run about $30 for 5 qts and $55 for synthetic. While you're car is there for an oil change, they also do a complimentary inspection. Nan kept stressing to me on the phone that they will let you know what's going on with your car, and won't push you to do any repair work that isn't immediately necessary. I really appreciated how she took the time to explain my car's issues to me in laymen's terms, and how transparent and honest she was. There was an issue with my car's turn signal, and I had been quoted $500 from another auto repair shop to fix it, but Nan told me that the part that needed replacing didn't need to be ordered from the manufacturer, and therefore could be replaced for $100. I also love the fact that this is a business run by women, and it's so close to my house! I highly recommend Dutch's for your car's needs! read more
