WOW! I can say that this is the best customer service I have ever had! I am a female who knows NOTHING about cars. I was on a cross country roadtrip when I started haveing engine trouble. I got to Madison, WI and needed the car fixed. I was terrified of being taken advantage of. All this was foreign to me as I did not have a car for most of my life. I called around to MANY transmission shops. When I found Midwest Engine Service I knew I was in the right place. From the get go, I was reassured by the kind voice on the phone. I spoke with the owner, Wayne. He went over the issue with my transmission top to bottom. He spoke in laymen's terms, so I actually understood what he was saying. Not only did I feel comfortable trusting Midwest Engine, they gave me the best quote and fastest turn around! Wayne kept me informed step by step, as I was still trying to finish my roadtrip. It seemed I needed a new axle, so I added that to the work order. Again, Waynes' thoughtful words and actions helped keep me at ease. When I got the call that the car was done, the price was even lower than the quote. This included the axle as well! I was so happy with the quality of work, the service and the trusting comfort they gave me. I was able to get back on the road the next morning. Finally, I was leaving Madison. As I was driving out of town that following morning, I got a call from Wayne. I instantly thought he was going to say they needed the car back or something. Why else would they be calling? It was Wayne. He called to make sure the car was running smoothly and that I had made it out of town ok. He then told me he also called to wish me a safe rest of my trip. I felt blessed. Long post warning. Bottom line is they ripped me off and will to the same to you. Dishonest, shady business practices. Battery warning light came on in my 2010 Toyota Camry. Stopped by O'Reilly auto parts. They used a small electrical device to check the system. It took them about five minutes. They told me the alternator was bad and needed replacing and didn't charge me anything for the diagnostic. I called Midwest and was told it would cost $750 to replace the alternator. The next day I had to have my car towed into Midwest. They informed me I needed to have a diagnosis performed for $189.99. I questioned that but they told me if it was not an alternator problem, I was going to have to pay for an alternator in addition to whatever they found wrong with the vehicle. I later contacted Meineke and they informed me an electrical diagnosis charge was $68. When Midwest called me, I was informed that it was going to be $850 to repair the alternator. I balked at that because I told him I had been told it would be $750. He stated he could "make that work." My suspicions grew. I went online to research what replacing an alternator entailed. I found two YouTube videos that showed how to replace an alternator in 15 to 30 minutes on a 2010 Camry. The alternator is held on by two bolts. When I went to pick up the car they charged me $506 for a remanufactured alternator when I could've bought one new for $329 from Carquest. They charged me $344.91 in labor to replace the alternator and two serpentine belts. Again, for 30-minute job. Total bill was $1176.88. Even with the Costco discount, it was a rip off. They tried to scam me and take my money I have multiple phone recording and videos in person recorded of the manager and receptionist being super rude in one of the videos he says " what do I have to do to get you out of here and never come back" after they tried to charge me 1.5k in diagnostic fees where they couldn't even figure out what was wrong with the car they tried to lie and make stuff up and when they figured I was recording them they kept changing their story. Very rude customer service I also have video of them in the back o talking bad about other customers and how crappy the customers car is and how the customer doesn't have an ideas of what they are doing. read more

I had a horrible experience at Madison Midwest Auto. I went in to ask questions about my 2012 Impreza using oil excessively. Man at the desk was " busy" grilling burgers out back, he had only a minute to talk to me. he let me join him by the grill after I asked, but seemed annoyed, didn't know why people bought Subarus because they all burn oil. they were actually working on a Subaru in the shop. should be a good thing for them, right? He seemed annoyed, maybe should have brought my "man partner" who had a great experience, even got a shop tour. Won't go back there to repeat that experience. read more

Don't go here unless you want to lose your money for nothing. I made an appointment but apparently it wasn't really an appointment. Making an appointment 2 days in advance really means the shop is just going to fit you in if they have time. My car diagnostic was billed as an hour of labor. The cost of that hour was over $130 and they didn't do anything. The front desk guy did not explain that them running a computer diagnostic was going to cost that much. Called on a Thursday and made a Tuesday appointment. Tuesday I show up, "Sorry, you are not on the schedule, it will be a couple days". Can't say I'll be in a hurry to go back here. I went in for an alignment. I was quoted about $99 which was fine. They did have loaner cars which was nice (although both of the ones I had over two days were given to me with the gas light already on empty. Also do note you have to pay mileage on them. The mileage charge is not very much but I'd rather they just add $5 to the cost of services and actually have the loaners be complimentary as opposed to a very cheap rental). Bygones! They called me later in the afternoon to notify me they couldn't do the requested alignment because I had a tie rod that needed to be replaced first. Dangit! I figured I'd go get my car, have my Mr. fix-it at home fix the tie rod, then bring it back for the alignment. When I got there they told me I had to pay about $75 if I wanted to take my car. Huh?! Seems I was getting charged for their time. They told me they'd apply the $75 to the tie rod repair, but not to the alignment. So now, even if I just take my car outta there, I'm already out $75 and I'm in the same spot I was in when I walked through the door. I would understand charging me for the time had I walked in and said I needed a diagnosis (i.e, "my car is making a sound, can you inspect it and tell me what's wrong?") or even perhaps an estimate (i.e, "I know I need a new front end, can you give me a quote?") but I simply asked for, and expected, an alignment. I felt like they had me over a barrel at this point which was not a fun spot to be. The end of the story - I ended up having them do the tie rod even though I didn't want to b/c I basically felt I had no other choice at that point given how much $ I already had (unexpectedly) on the counter. The tie rod got fixed & the car aligned but I won't be headed back because I don't like such unexpected charges and I've been other places around town that wouldn't have pulled that. read more

My son and I went to get his truck and take it to Meineke's because they told me they would look at it Wed. Wed, came and it wasn't looked at then Thursday came and still they said it could be after the week-end. Mind you it was taken in last Thursday. Now I had already wrote a 1 star review and when we got there the truck was in the shop. Shocking....Hummm then after a quote we decided to get it going around 200.00. Then as we walked out he shouted another 100.00 for diagnosis. When we came back to get it. I asked for the restroom key when a man (manager) I believe asked me my name and if i wrote the bad review. He asked me to take it away. And I told him I wouldn't. He became angry and said that I wasn't even a customer. I told him I was since I just paid for the vehicle. I then asked for the restroom key and he refused to let me go to the restroom saying I wasn't a customer. I left and said I would never come back again and he yelled we don't want you back. Please avoid this place by all means. Anyone that pays for your service is a CUSTOMER and should not be denied your restroom because you didn't like my review. The only reason it was put in the shop was because of my review (I believe). I really wish we would have just taken it out right away and not given them a dime. Watch out for these guys. read more

Had a bad battery terminal I couldn't fix roadside towed in here. Attempted to run the jack on me, saying the six month old battery needed replacing as well as a some belts to the tune of $700. Declined it and had them just fix the battery terminal. That was six months ago, belts and battery still fine without the extra $500 in repairs. read more

Seems like Midwest Engine Services business model is to gouge you for as much money as possible, and if you're smart enough not to give Midwest Engine Service future business there's enough other ignorant customers for them to feed off of in the future. I am not a mechanic but have rebuilt a few engines and cars and have some knowledge in this area. I took machine work to them for which I didn't have the necessary equipment. These people are disgusting money-grabbers. My car wouldn't start, and wouldn't jump. I had a tow truck come and he diagnosed the problem as a broken starter. I get it to Midwest Engine Service and they tell me that replacing the starter is going to be a $1,100. I get quotes elsewhere and find out that his service is EGREGIOUSLY overpriced, so I want to take it somewhere else, but now just the diagnostic fee is going to be over $300. To do absolutely nothing--we knew the starter was shot before it got there! and if I let them do the job, they don't even deduct the diagnostic fee! Horrible people. Just received a call from Midwest. Unfortunately, this call was not to address our customer satisfaction (or lack of), but to gripe at us for our negative review. The gentleman actually had the nerve to insist that we change our review of the service we received. He continues to think over charging and mis-quoting us was completely acceptable. He felt our review was "dis-honest". We would like to reiterate our review and impression of Midwest. We were originally satisfied with the work performed until we realized it had not been completed 100%. In our experience, machine shops complete the assigned job in one trip. We were blind sided with an $1100+ bill, when we were expecting $700 max. Even had a prior conversation, where we asked if we set aside $1000, would it cover it? The response was "oh yeah yeah, that should be more than enough". When we were assembling our motor, we realized Midwest had not checked the clearance of the rods on the crank journals. The fitment was off 40 thousandth. We had supplies them with all the brand new parts to complete this task. We had to dis-assemble the motor and return the rods to them for more machine work. They charged us $1500+, but they did give us a 50% discount for another final bill of $750+. We are now to almost $2000 for something originally quoted to be $700 max. We were mis-quoted the price and we were grossly over charged. As small business owners, we understand that jobs sometimes take longer, parts sometimes cost more, but we would NEVER exceed a quoted price without contacting our customer to discuss the extra charges. We work with our customers and make sure that everyone is satisfied. In our honest opinion, if you are need of machine work, it is worth waiting for a more professional shop. I was having steering problems so I took my quote to a different Madison shop. After getting a quote littered with overpriced parts I brought my car to Midwest. They promised to beat the quote and fit me into their schedule immediately. I was given a loaner car and sent on my way. They were right, they beat the prices of the other shop, and even promised to have the car running quicker than the other shop told me! When I picked up my car I was shocked at the final price, almost HALF of what the first shop told me that I needed. Everyone was very honest and friendly at Midwest. I knew I had a lot of things wrong with my van; tires, alignment, brakes, etc. I took it to Midwest for all of those items. Colin quoted me after going through the vehicle before starting the work, and found a couple of other item wrong with it. I felt the charges were very reasonable and the work was well done. They upgraded my brakes per my request and got me back on the road in the time they said they would (they actually finished a few hours before they expected). My husband took the car on a road trip this weekend and said it was driving and handling better than when we bought it. I used a loaner car and it was very reasonable. Also, after finding out the car needed to be there overnight I went back to pick up my car seat. Colin carried it out to my loaner car for me. I'll be back. read more

We've been there twice with two different cars Our Audi A4 is usually the most expensive for services and they have incredible pricing. We had the breaks done on the Audi, it was fast and they cleaned the car after as well! They have full synth oil changes cheaper than we were previously getting. I got a new alternator and belt put on for the Nissan we have and it was done within a day or two, also cleaned the interior of the suv. Poor service. Left off a protective part to my engine!! I went here because a friend recommended them. Bad idea. Took it in on a Wednesday. No call back as to when it would be done. Called late in day, and they say Thursday. I call them on Thursday, they say we think we figured it out, come in Friday. I call them on Friday and they determine they need to order a part, but I should just leave it over the weekend and they should be able to get the part Monday and installed next Tuesday. However, I had an appt on Friday and needed the car. They said I could use it. Picked up and paid the bill for work done. Over the weekend, I decide on another course of action and leave message for them. Monday morning they tell me that they left off an "engine shield" and could I bring it back in to have it put back on. This part is about 2 ft by 2ft - not a small part to forget. It also protects your engine and protects your transmission pan. So how in the name of Wayne do you forget a part this big and let me go the entire weekend without telling me? I hate writing bad reviews. But, this was beyond silly and unprofessional. read more

But after just a few minutes on the phone with Midwest Engine Service, I knew I was in good hands. They have extremely good customer service--prompt, polite, friendly, and direct. I almost feel like I need to write 2 different reviews because I have have 2 very different experiences. One, I bought my Volvo from them and loved Dennis ( the salesman). He didn't BS around and was to the point. Love him. I would give him 5 stars. OK Now. To the auto shop. Let me just say that Collin, the front desk attendant, is a D Bag. Excuse my language but he is. He is not very friendly at all and refuses to take any responsibility for his mistakes. I found him to be extremely arrogant and has no business doing front desk work. To make a long story short, I called in one day to have a small service done to my car. I ask if there was any way to fit me in, if not, I could come back a later day. It was not very serious. Well, I was told to come in that day. So, I go, have my car "fixed" and leave. It was my mistake driving off and not inspecting my car because what I paid for is not what I got. I called about an hour later after I realized nothing was done to my car and complained. I asked to speak to a manager. A lady who gets on the phone. I tell her what my issues and she tells me I should talk to Collin. That made no sense. Why are you claiming to be the manager if you refuse to manage? I knew she wasn't a manager because when I went in to get my car fixed, I could see her in the back room on Facebook doing nothing while I was waiting. So I get on the phone with Collin and he basically threw it in my face that the mechanic stopped working on someone else's car who had an appointment to do something that took 5 minutes total on my car. I told him that was not my problem. I called and asked them that morning if I could be accommodated and if not, I would come in another time. He told me to come in. I didn't force them to do anything. I wasn't getting anywhere with him and he was starting to sound like a broken record. I ask to talk to a manager (again) and I know for a fact it was not the manager on the phone but rather the mechanic. I told him that for what they did, I could have done the job myself. His response to me was " well why did you come in?" Oh really? I replied that someone who spent over $10K at their small business in less than a year doesn't deserve to be treated like crap. On top of that whole issue, I didn't realize the service fee was $18 which was more than the product for fixing the car. OK. Fine I wouldn't have just walked away from that had my car been fixed but it wasn't and I felt completely robbed. The customer service is horrible. Once they get your money, they do not care about how you feel about their quality of work. They need to get rid of Collin or someone will put him in his rightful place. Never met a more cockier person than him. I wouldn't give them another dime. They do not appreciate people supporting small business. I will pay the extra $ and just take my car to Volvo for any mechanical issues. read more

They were very polite and professional and provided an estimate in a reasonable amount of time. No complaints about their service, but their labor rates are rather expensive (100 dollars an hour). If money is not a major factor I'd recommend their service. But if you are on a tight budget, there are better options out there. read more

Incredibly bad. We took our Accord there for brake work -- a couple weeks later the brakes were squeaking. We took it back and let them try again -- more squeaking and shuddering after about a week. Took it to a reputable mechanic, who told us that the rear brake was misaligned to the point that the pads were not making contact, meaning that only the front brakes were functioning. They overheated and were ruined, necessitating replacement. Avoid these guys at all costs. read more
