Today was my first time car shopping, and I initially trusted the dealer when he said nothing was wrong apart from the sound button not working. Took it in to the mechanic my family trusts just to be safe and thank god I did because there was ALOT of $$$ problems with it :(( leaking transmission, missing antenna, radio not working, air conditioning not getting cold enough, leaking sealant, just to name a few. My family thinks I've dodged a bullet, and it sounds like the mechanic was very through when they went through with it. It took about 2 hours and ran me about $200~ but saved me what would've been thousands in damages. The man at his desk (Larry) who I believe was the one who did the maintenance check was very nice to us even though we were almost half an hour late to our appointment initially, I was extremely apologetic and he didn't seem to mind at all.(again, very sorry about that) They even spoke to my family and recommended a dealership for us to try (didn't seem like a money grab, wasn't on a business card they wrote it on the back of a blank piece of paper in pen) so hopefully my car hunting goes better.... read more

I've been here several times for routine maintenance, and while the work has been performed without any issues, it's very pricey. An oil change and tire rotation is $105 out the door; a new cabin air filter was quoted $89 for labor alone + the very-marked-up part. (This is literally a 5-minute job -- I've done it myself.) They also seemed a little pushy for additional services, like a radiator flush at 60,000k miles when my vehicle's maintenance schedule indicates 100k. I don't know... just not the vibe I was expecting. There's a lot of overhead here -- a lot of bays, a lot of tools, a lot of techs. That's not necessarily a bad thing. But when pricing is so out of line, it's hard to justify. I understand you get what you pay for, but in this case, it's not even close to competitive for commodity-level work. read more

The most elaborate scam I've ever seen. Went there for an evaluation and they tried saying that way more was wrong with the car than actually was. I went to get a second opinion elsewhere and a job that they said would cost over $3500 to fix was actually less than $1200 in reality. They claim the prices are because "their parts are quality and warrantied" but someone I talked to at Chevy (who they claim their parts are from) said those prices are absurd. I would never ever recommend anyone go here to get their car fixed for any reason at all. read more

Paid a premium price for squealing mediocre brakes. I asked for a quote on replacing spark plugs and shocks and they quoted double to triple the retail prices of the parts. When I asked why the parts prices were so expensive, I got nothing but crickets. If your car breaks down in their parking lot, give 'em a shot. Otherwise, look elsewhere and save some money. read more

Our other car was in for routine maintenance, and they found an issue that should be covered by the car's warranty. We really appreciate that they recommended to take it to the dealer instead of paying out of pocket. They also spoke with the car dealer's service department over the phone to help them find the issue. Exceptional customer service in my opinion. read more

I was told by the madison BMW dealer that on my BMW Z3 both my rear tires were "fail status" and the two front tire were "caution." I took the car to Toms , had him order the tires which would have been over $800 installed, the BMW dealer's price was over $1000, and they told me there was nothing wrong with the tires and I didn't need new tires. You have to really appreciate the honesty of this business. They easily could have replaced the tires and I wouldn't have known any better. read more

It sure seems like Tom's has labeled me as a sucker. I have been doing some reading, and Tom's recommended maintenance intervals are different from the manufacturer's. They say that the spark plugs should be changed every 50,000 miles while Ford manual says 90,000 miles. My vehicle had 64,019 miles on it when I took it in, so that's 25,981 miles premature. Furthermore, they said that I should have the coolant flushed after 50,000 miles. Again, this is premature. The manual says this should be done initially at 105,000 miles/6 years and then every 45,000 miles/3 years. Plus, they put in additives that aren't needed or recommended by the manufacturer. Forget Tom's and save yourself from exploitation. AAA says that some mechanic shops make extra money doing these particular services when they aren't needed, and I have found one of them. read more

When they told me they couldn't even look at my car for 5 days and then they wanted $125 just to tell me what was wrong. When I said "shit" I got a little lecture from the holier than thou Mesha. They had done work for me before and charged quite a bit, but this was ridiculous. Things are hard enough right now, who needs greedy guts people like this? read more

I had been told by my auto dealership during a routine oil chnage that I had a small exhaust leak that needed welding and a bad power steering motor that needed replacing. They quoted $1200 for the repairs and so I spoke with my husband and he suggested I get a second opinion from Tom's Auto Center in McFarland. Boy howdy, am I glad I did! Tom is a stand-up guy, truly one of the good ones. He had his guys check out the issues my dealership had told me about and they found zero exhaust leaks. None! He did agree that my power steering motor needed to be replaced, but he said also the pulley was also bad. he even pulled the part to show me so I could get a visual and also proved to me he wasn't making it up (like the non-existent exhaust leak). So for HALF the price of what the dealership quoted me, I got the work done that actually needed to be done plus I got a free loaner car for the duration of the repairs. AND when I picked up my car, there were homemade cookies sitting on the passenger seat with a thank you from Tom. Seriously - so awesome! I live on the East side of Madison and I'm happy to drive to McFarland for Tom. I won't take my car anywhere else for repairs as long as Tom's is around. Well worth it! read more

I started go to Tom's about 30 years ago because he was a great mechanic and never tried to RIP me off. Then I left Wisconsin for work and just recently returned. Over Memorial Day the A/C in my car went out, so I called Tom's and they got me in ASAP, even giving me a loaner while they worked on the car. Unfortunately the news wasn't great, but they gave me various options and once I gave the go ahead, they got it done quickly, even after I called and got a few things added. I was still using the loaner for FREE during the time the repairs took! Mesha was great and they proved my in instinct was right. Tom and his people are Stand up people and great mechanics. Even got free cookies when I picked up my car. Even though I live in SunPraire now, I'll always recommend Tom's and I'll be going back for any work needed, especially preventative! read more

From routine maintenance to a potential severe problem.... they'll find it and go above and beyond to let you know their recommendations. My Car had overheated just south of McFarland and I had to get a tow to their shop. I was nervous at first because I don't know much about cars and I was worried that these guys would rip me off as I would be an easy target. These guys have done just the opposite. They were able to look at my car earlier than expected and even though I did not receive good news about the condition, They were more than understanding about me not going forward with fixing it. They didn't try to scam me at all. They were fairly priced. Not only that, but being that I lived over an hour and a half away they even went the extra mile to allow me time to get out there again and take care of my car without time constraints. Tried to rob me. Breaks were don year prior and under warranty. They told me I needed new breaks(calipers,rotors,pads). 1200$.we live around the corner and Owen used cars and they could have had all my buisness. How ever they go down as SHADY AF!!! read more

Tom's auto center is EXTREMELY expensive and both times I have used their services my vehicle had more problems. And the loaner car costs $0.29/mile I would recommend finding somewhere else to have your vehicle repaired. read more
