Their towing service is absolutely wonderful! I had an accident with my car on my own street. A few houses down when I slid into a construction trailer... While they couldn't tow it back to my house three houses away, they were very fast in getting here like within 15 minutes... They towed it to the dealership where I bought it and we're very professional in everything Two weeks later, I found a car that I wanted to buy and purchased it at the dealership... When I got home, I hadn't driven the car for about 24 hours and the battery or something had gone dead on it and I wasn't able to even get in the car! The manager of the rental place enterprise gave me a toll-free number to call to arrange roadside service. Westside auto pros was the tow company who was called to handle the call... The lady who came out here was very quick to get here within about 15 minutes got the rental unlocked so I could get my possessions out, and then jumpstarted the car to get it to run long enough to get it on the flatbed... Then she told it to enterprises repair shop on Fluer drive... I have a friend who has a towing service in Des Moines on the east side, but doesn't do AAA towing... and whenever I need a tow that needs to be recovered underAAA towing, I will request Westside auto pros every single time, Very nice people very professional and quick to get the job done! read more

Highway robbers. They are a AAA associated garage, but if you have AAA and need service in the area, I URGE you to do your own research and get your vehicle towed somewhere else. Look into the local mobile mechanics, a way better option! At Westside it was $185 simply for the diagnostic of the vehicle. They did give me an accurate diagnostic. That's 1 star earned. HOWEVER, it seemed they were counting on me not being knowledgeable about vehicles and willing to use my perceived ignorance to their advantage. They were wrong to assume that. They quoted me an additional $1200 to replace a $23 sensor with no timeline on when they were able to conduct the repair. Highway robbery! I was on a cross-country road trip, I didn't want to wait around and pay for hotels and food. Plus, I knew generally what it took to do the repair and that quote seemed outrageous. I refused the service, knowing it was just a sensor issue. I was able to drive my vehicle off the lot myself moments later (the sensor simply needed to dry out and I had to tighten a bolt to prevent water from getting in the space again.) After watching a 2 min YouTube video, I ordered a replacement sensor just in case from autozone for $23, I then was able to contact a mobile mechanic and asked him to assist me tightening the bolt because I didn't have all my tools with me to access the area. He was able to come within 2 hours of my call and charged me less than $80 to assist. I didn't even need to replace the sensor. Literally just had to take off one heat shield and tighten the bolt. I tipped him for being so helpful. So for about $100 total before tip (less if I returned the second sensor) and under two hours of work I was able to get the repair done which Westside quoted me approximately $1400 for and would've taken them potentially several days or more to do; causing me to also pay more $ for food and hotels while I waited. They get a second star because their tow truck driver was nice and told me to shop around and admitted they were overpriced. read more

Honestly, absolutely ridiculous. Called AAA and they dispatched west side auto pros. I was assigned to a technician Lance Miller. Wait time was reasonable and loading my car went fine. Then I (female 21) had to fight with the tech (elderly man) to get him to tow my car to my preferred shop. This was met with condemnation, him saying that the shop I wanted wasn't good/ didn't have time for me. (Even though I already had made an appointment with the shop in question). The tech tried to strong arm me into taking my vehicle to his company's shop and wouldn't accept my answer until I got my father on the phone. Even after my father said the exact same thing I said, the tech was still agitated and became very rude to me. I had to defend where I wanted the vehicle taken multiple times. OK update on our experience at this junk business after ten days of them putting in a used motor the out come was the motor they got was junk and they simply handed us our money back and now we were stranded with a car with the junk motor they put in it and would not offer to fix what they put in the car. That is some customer service alright oh and the loaner they gave us for the repair they covered two of the ten days they had our car leaving us with 582.00 in loaner car expenses'. They talk a good game. Always an excuse. Have a very nice facility. Wish they had some mechanics. I spent over $800.00 and 5 trips in over 3 weeks to have absolutely nothing fixed on my '87 Firebird. I originally ask them to tune my carb (new), adjust my transmission TV cable and check timing. I'd pick up the car, it was hard starting, and it would quit before I was out of their drive. Once it died about 5 blocks away, so I had to walk back, and pay them to tow it back. I paid over $200.00 in towing bills in all. After all of this, the engine would not run without back firing and stumbling. The tranny would not shift into second, and they cut up my TV cable mounting brackets trying to adjust. I had taken the car to west side as I did not want to do the work myself, I am getting older and can't crawl around a car like I use to. I have been a tree shader for 40 years so I decided I would have to bite the bullet and do it myself. I got on the Internet and found the TV cable adjustment to be easy and took about 3 minutes. Transmission shifts at exact shift points and down shifts when it is suppose to. I found the reason they could not get the timing correct, was a bad harmonic balancer that had shifted. I replaced it and got the timing set first try. I fixed the carb stumbles by changing out the primary fuel cam. Now the car runs better than when I bought it new in 1987. West Side may be able to fix some things, but they are not diagnosticians. Keep your hot rods, survivors and customs away, far away! read more

Called AAA for flat tire assistance and Westside Auto was dispatched. We waited a bit over the time they said they would be out. But they were able to get to us within about an hour after getting the tow dispatched by AAA. Our tech Dave was great, he worked so hard to get a stubborn and stripped lug nut off and get us back on the road quickly. Which was great so we didn't have to be towed. They made it quick and easy and it's great they work with AAA. read more

After several weeks of trying to get this corrected, I am pretty disappointed. I reached out to Westside Auto Pro's inquiring about a different style front grill for my truck. They gave me a quote and ordered it in. the grill fit fine, but, from the outset, the collision warning indicator sensor's were not working after installation. They tried a couple of fixes, but to no good result. It was after we were in that process that they told me the grill they ordered was not from Toyota. I finally had them put the original back on, but it was too late to return the defective grill. Then, I learned that there is a sensor cover box that should have been ordered, along with the grill. When I asked them about that, no real response was given. So, I am out $500+, stuck with a grill that doesn't do the whole job. As I said, pretty disappointed. read more

Poor service. Outrageous prices. Wouldn't recommend. Summary: I've never had an issue when I've used an AAA-recommended service provider before, but I guess there's a first time for everything. I had to wait for several days before I could post this review. Two weeks ago, my son had his car towed by AAA. He forgot who I used for a mechanic, and so he had it towed to a shop they recommended. The ultimate diagnosis and repair was for a faulty ignition switch. It took nine days for that repair, and the cost kept ballooning during the time in the shop. My biggest issue was the poor service. I would be promised phone calls that never happened. On multiple occasions, I was promised that my son's car was "next up," only to find out 24 hours later that it hadn't been looked at. On Day 8, I was told that part of the reason for the cost was that the ignition was chipped and would have to be reprogrammed as part of the repair, only to be told on Day 9 that they had no idea the car had chip keys. Finally, on Day 9, I was promised that the car would be fixed by 10:00AM on Day 10. My wife and I were going to be leaving town by 5:00AM on Day 10 and our two college-age sons would each need a functioning car while we were gone (we have 3 cars for 4 people). I explained this and that I needed to have the car by close of business that day. The service manager offered me a rental overnight, but I told him that, since neither of my sons are old enough to drive a rental yet, my wife and I would need to take it, and so he would need to cover the cost of the rental for 4 days, not just overnight. I'm not a big review-type guy, but as I happened to look at the reviews for Westside lately, I am compelled to give my two cents. I've been using Westside to service our 4 cars, which range from a pretty new BMW to a 2003 Toyota that my daughter drives to death as a college student. I've used Westside exclusively for over 10 years to work on our vehicles and I trust them. They are not perfect, but who among us is. That said, I've had maybe two issues is 10+ years and when an issue came up, Westside quickly and promptly made it right by me. For me, it comes down to trust. I'm pretty picky with my money and I can tell you that I always think that my money is well spent at Westside. I'm sorry if others have had experiences different than mine, but I would not hesitate for a second to recommend Westside. Good people, good work and have always been fair and honest with me. Had car trouble and needed a tow. They then did a diagnostic test and said it needed a new mass air flow sensor. They were going to charge $470 for a the sensor. We got a car dolly and took the car to ORileys and bought one for $$130. Took out two screws and changed it out. It still was not running right so we took the car to our local mechanic who ran the code and said it was a bad map sensor... a a $20 sensor. They were going to charge us over $1,000 to tow, run a diagnostic test and "replace"the mass air flow sensor... which wasn't even the problem! I wouldn't trust them ever. Lose their number! I usually don't post bad reviews but I couldn't sleep knowing that they are taking advantage of their customers. I can't imagine how they sleep. read more

WOMEN BEWARE!!!!! The staff was very friendly and they were very quick. But as a single woman trying to get my car fixed, I feel completely taken advantage of. My key stopped working for my car so I got it towed to Westside, the closest place to its location. They told me that they were able to cut new keys and reprogram them. They called to communicate the issue and make recommendations, all very professional sounding. A friend that I spoke to in the meantime mentioned that they were charging a very high price for a new key. I did a little research of my own and EVERY other location in the Des Moines area that will replace AND reprogram a key was half the price. Westside Auto Pros was charging me DOUBLE!!! I am furious that they will take advantage of a woman in need in such a way and want to warn any other women out there to keep looking, or at least get quotes before going to Westside Auto Pros. When picking up my car, I did ask why the difference in price, but no one was able to tell me. If you are going to charge someone double then your staff should be able to at least tell me why. Westside Auto Pros nearly totaled my Ariel Atom while taking it on a joyride. Yes, really. The shop manager (Joe) took my car out on multiple joyrides (according to a nearby business owner) while the owner (Ron) was on vacation. One of the joyrides came to an unexpected end, resulting in $30,000 in damage when Joe failed to keep control of the car after doing doughnuts just one block away from the shop (we still have photos of the tire marks from the culdesac right down the road and an audio interview with a local business owner who witnessed everything happen). Originally, I had decided to take my car to Westside because I've known Ron for several years and had always respected the way he ran his business. That is until this almost unbelievable story unfolded. I was excited to have sold my car and wanted to have it in tip-top shape when delivering it to the new owner. I decided to take it to Westside Auto Pros to have them do two things: (1) Change the oil and (2) look at a small electrical issue that was keeping the car from starting from time to time. The good news is they fixed it. The bad news is after they fixed it, they felt it was necessary to take the car for a drive (remember, the car just wouldn't start... it wasn't a problem related to driving the car). The incident happened on a Friday (or maybe it was Saturday, I'm not sure because it was never mentioned to me...). I received a call the following Monday when Ron was back in town. The only good news in this story is that they were insured. The bad part about insurance is they aren't always the easiest to work with on settling claims. Ron and his team quickly bowed out of the situation and said "the insurance company will take care of everything". I then spent the next 6 months dealing with the insurance company to get the car repaired (it had to be shipped to Virginia because that was the only qualified place to actually look over the car and determine what work needed to be done) and then try to collect money for the negative impact in value of the car after the accident (about $20,000). I won't go into the details on the insurance negotiation -- but let's just say it likely involved 80 hours of my time and Ron and his staff were quick to wash their hands of the situation. A few interesting points of the experience: 1) Nobody ever admitted fault to what actually happened. Even though there was evidence of what had happened. 2) I've spoken with several people who once worked at the shop and other acquaintances of people who currently work there. Nobody was surprised. Nobody. 3) Joe still manages the entire business. After the owner (Ron) knew about the joyride and accident. From a liability standpoint alone, I don't know how this is possible. 4) When the shop released my (basically totaled) car to the car transport company, they called me to pay for the balance of the bill for the work that was performed before they joyrode and wrecked the car. [You can't make this stuff up.] 5) Ron used having the car in the shop as a marketing opportunity on their Facebook page. Without my permission. Then, never provided any updates after the post was made. 6) I never really got the impression they were sorry because they never really admitted to what actually happened. Which is really mind blowing. Bottom Line: There are plenty of places that this sort of thing happens. I just expected more from Ron and his staff. As a result of how this was handled (both while the car was in their care, and especially the lack of professionalism and accountability afterward), I have lost the respect I once had and I can only imagine there are several other joyrides that have happened that didn't have the same result. I'm just glad nobody was hurt. Take your car to their shop at your own risk. It's clear they put employees first. The same people involved with the accident and my car still work and manage the shop. read more

I go here because my husband always has, and so have his parents. They are the kind of people who buy a car and then drive...and drive...and drive it. They do their scheduled maintenance and keep records and take good care of their vehicles. So, I trust their judgement if they've been going to the same place for so long. I do think they may be higher priced than some places in town, but they do have well-trained mechanics. They have helped me out by not charging me a dime for simpler fixes, even though at first they indicated their would be a charge for a diagnostic test, etc. I am happy to pay a little more and feel comfortable with the work done. They are always very friendly, and do a good job of explaining the work that should happen before performing any labor. I never see silly charges on my bill like I have at, for example, Firestone Complete Autocare. read more

I recently had a flat tire in my RV, just went flat for some reason. I called AAA Motor Club and this was the company that responded (I hope I got the right one, since there appears to be more than one at different addresses), I was pleased they came within 30 minutes, so the wait wasn't bad. They came in a van and they had a compressor and was able to pump air into my tire. Apparently, that was all that was needed. If not, I was told there was a "backup" repair coming for more intensive work. I'm giving three stars because they came in 30 minutes, but since they didn't need to do more intensive work, I can't comment any further. But because they were able to pump up my tire, this enabled me to get to a tire store to have my tire checked out. read more

DO NOT USE WESTSIDE AUTO PROS AAA used these guys as a tow service, but would not tow to my normal mechanic because it was over 25 miles so I had them take it to their shop in Des Moines. I had a flat tire (no spare) and the heat was not working. Waited in my unheated car for over 2 hours in -25 windchill weather and could not get ahold of anyone at the shop. Westside Auto Pros tried to charge me $3,200 for so called "Mandatory Repairs" or $3,600 for everything. They did work on my car without my permission and charged me for it. We ended up towing it to my mechanic in Adel, when the tow truck got their he called us and asked if we knew that the car was drivable. So I had paid for the work that I didn't ask to be done and for an unnecessary tow. They had sent me 3 emails with charts and lists and pictures and codes and numbers stating all the work that needed to be done. I took it to my mechanic in Adel and he charged me for 2 new tires and fixed the loose hose that was causing the heating issue for no charge. Cost me less than 800 dollars total, including the work done at Westside Auto Pros without my permission and the unnecessary tow. I fully believe that they knew I was a young female who knows nothing about cars and tried to take advantage of that. They way that the emails were set up was beyond confusing and I believe that this was another tactic to try and confuse and take advantage of me. read more

Unfortunately Yelp wont let me place two reviews, however i feel it necessary to leave this update: I recently contracted West Side Auto Pros via AAA to transport my vehicle across town. Unfortunately, the vehicle was not placed in the correct location. I find it only fair that if i contract someone to do something, and they fail to do this activity, i should not have to pay for this activity. It would seem Ron has different thoughts. After discussions with both AAA and Ron Haugen, owner of Westside, it would seem I am still on the hook for a $60 tow that left my vehicle on the wrong street of East Des Moines. In attempting to try to allow Westside to make this right, initially Ron said they when he sent someone by to review or recover the vehicle it was already in the right location. When I informed him my mechanic had already moved the vehicle he seemed to imply that I was not being truthful. When I told him I have security footage of the drop location and NO car in it, he told me that I would have to followup with AAA. Under no circumstances will I be allowing Westside to touch any of my vehicles again. Additionally, I will certainly find it difficult to attend any WDSM Cars & Coffee events with any positivity. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Very disappointed with Westside lately. Previously i was able to call in a receive a quote for a specific job over the phone, however the last few times I have called in I have met with unreliable results. At times I've been told they will call me back, other times I have been told flat out that they refuse to provide any quotes on the phone. They seem to now require to have the vehicle in their hands, however my car currently does not run and i cannot afford to have it towed around to every shop for a quote. Additionally, they refuse to provide me with any shop rates, stating that it 'depends'. This can be very frustrating given that i know my vehicles, and their issues. I know Westside is able to type the car into their computer system and the job that i am asking to quote and at least return to me with a ballpark figure. I wasnt asking for any dianostics, I simply needed to know how much a water pump costs to replace, I'm fully aware that any other issues found and repaired would change the quote. This is how every shop I have ever went to previously has operated. All requests to Westside for even a ballpark quote were met with resistance and refusal. Even in asking my friends who own shops in other cities and states, they A. Gave me a quote because their business is operated off helping people and B. said this shop that refused to provide transparency was likely shady. Westside Auto Pro's lack of cooperation with my situation seems to indicate that they are involved in questionable business and billing practices. Went through training here for a tow posistion. Did a ride along the gentleman I rode with never bothered to really explain anything or seem interested in training me. This guy was too busy playing on his laptop and visiting people in and out of the office when we stopped in there.
