I've had Westbrook cans from bars and grocery stores for years; the Gose is my favorite. I was looking for a dog-friendly brewery to visit for the day--specifically, a dog-friendly brewery that allowed dogs inside an air-conditioned interior space. Most local breweries that don't have kitchens allow dogs inside the facility. I called Westbrook in advance to make sure the inside bar area was dog-friendly and was told that it was indeed dog-friendly inside. When I showed up the next day with my well-trained, leashed, 65-pound Labrador and went inside, the bartender told me that "only small dogs and puppies" were allowed inside. Sure enough, there were four or five small dogs/puppies inside the brewery's air-conditioned space that fit this bill. I was told that since I had a larger dog, I would have to take my beer and sit outside. While the beer was good, it was incredibly frustrating to visit a brewery with ridiculous policies towards sizes of dogs. Either put all dogs outside, or let all dogs (who are well-behaved and on a leash) inside the facility. I won't be back to the brewery. read more

Finally made it out for the release of their "stepping in toes" beer. The building is pretty cool looking and seems rather large from the outside. The inside sitting area seemed a little small to me but it could be because it was a pretty big event. I didn't get the beer being released but I did get my favorite Mexican cake beer! Easily my favorite beer these days. I love Westbrook beer as I feel they make different beer than most breweries around here! I will be back to stock up on their coconut IPA and others! read more

I can't say enough good things about Westbrook brewery. I have been an avid backer since I discovered them in 2011. They have only been open two years but are having major success. Westbrook is not your average brewery experience. You don't need to make a reservation and show up at a certain time to have structured tours sampling along the way. Westbrook is more like hanging out at a bar. A bar with the most amazing beer being brewed right in front of you. The tasting room is always full of people hanging out and having a good time. You want a tour? Just ask... then they will make an announcement to see if anyone else wants to join. Even though I have been countless times, I still take the tour every once in a while. You always get new info depending on who's giving it. If you are a newbie, you must partake in the tour... if only to smell the sweet sweet nectar of the amazing barrel room. As with any good tour, the barrel room is saved for last. Pull back a sliding door and from floor to ceiling are wooden barrels full of beer just waiting for the right time to be burst open and consumed by all (or to a lucky few, as these barrels are extremely small batch). The barrels are all labeled indicating which delicious concoction once lived in that barrel (usually wine or whiskey) as well as its current resident. The aroma is unmistakeable and should be bottled into its own fragrance - Eau de Westbrook. The staff is always fantastic and knowledgeable. I have gotten to know a few of them and it is great to walk in to see familiar faces. The process is as follows: walk in, saddle up to the bar, look over the rotating menu, write your selections down on a flight sheet, and the bartenders will bring them to you one at a time or all at once depending on your preference. The selection is varied and seems to please beer drinkers as well as not-so-much beer drinkers. I won't get in to all of my favorite brews as this review would then turn into a novel, but I will say to go and be adventurous. Try things you may not have otherwise and I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Then choose your favorite or favorites and get a growler to go, or a couple bombers. In the two years since I first reviewed the place, I've been back about 10 times. I'm sad to say that we have seen customer service erode to the point where my last (and I mean last) experience involved standing at both ends of the bar with an empty growler in hand making eye contact with all three people who were (loosely said) working there, and eventually walking out with an empty growler. My initial experiences with service were good to decent. But in the past year, the crews that work there, not just certain people either, have become more detached from the customer. We disregarded it in the beginning chalking it up to volume. But as we observed more, it was clear that they just don't seem to care about customer service. So, the verdict is this, the quality of their beers just don't rise to a level that requires one to overlook shoddy service. I won't be back, and can no longer recommend the place. read more

Definitely need to update this review from 2 years ago - we've been a few times since my initial review, and I can honestly say I was overwhelmed with what to order last time - so many options. I've now found the beers I like, and Westbrook does it well: New England IPAs and Gose. So good. The taproom is kind of small, in terms of seating, but they also have outdoor space. This brewery is hidden off the beaten path (although it's one of the only ones clearly visible from the highway), but it's worth the trek. The tasting room is current pretty small with plans to expand in the near future. I was there a week after the Mexican Cake release, so I was able to pick up a few bottles for myself and friends. I had a flight that I thoroughly enjoyed, although I wish the flight had come with 6 tastes instead of 4 (since there were 6 things I wanted to try). I like that you can bring home a crowler/growler of their tasting room-only beers, but I wish they had to-go cans of those beers, too. As much as I like their commercial rotation of goses, I would prefer to bring home the mojito or pina colada gose that you can't get anywhere else. read more

It was super crowded but that could just be because it was the day after Christmas and most people were off and thirsty. They have small flights of 4 for $6. (Think they recently raised the price from $4.) Tours are not scheduled but even with the large crowd wanting to be served at the bar, they were kind enough to host a tour. Westbrook, along with Holy City, Freehouse, COAST, and the granddaddy of Charleston breweries, Palmetto, really paved the way for the craft beer renaissance in town. They were one of the first places in Charleston to get a solid foothold in the distribution market and their canned beers are some of the best and most consistent local stuff you can buy. I'm partial to the One Claw, Gose, and Citrus Redacted. Westbrook has also been game to frequently collaborate with other breweries, which makes for some fun and interesting one-off or seasonal brews. The Mexican Cake release has become a yearly event with bottles coveted by craft beer aficionados all over the US. I've tried the regular Mexican Cake and the Biscotti, brewed in conjunction with Evil Twin. They were both good but ultimately a little disappointing in light of the hype. It's the Pappy Van Winkle of beer--still really good, but driven more by scarcity and hype than anything and not worth the price tag in my opinion (there's even a few bottles of Mexican Cake aged in Pappy barrels floating around out there that are going for as much as you'd imagine). The brewery itself is not as conducive to on-site drinking (the location itself pre-dates the on-site serving shift in SC legislation that allowed for the boom we're all enjoying so it was not designed with that in mind) as most of the other places in town but it's still a cool place to hang out. Westbrook is one of the giants of the Charleston craft beer scene and is still one of those places you have to visit if you're a craft beer drinker! read more

The bartender then gave tastes to everyone else that came in. We did not give her a tip for her rudeness and she announced loudly that she did not get a tip and we could leave. I will not go back. Came here as part of the 'Brews Cruise' the day after Thanksgiving - Kudos to Westbrook for being open that day. Its located in Mt. Pleasant, and from the outside is absolutely beautiful - not what you are expecting from a brewery. Inside, was just as nice, open spaced and squeaky clean. We were able to go in before it was opened to the public that day, and tasted each of the brews they had on tap. I fell in love with the White Thai (it is still one of my hands down favorites). They let us walk around the back and see the brewing process and also the barrel holding room, which was AWESOME. By the time we got back to the tasting area - which is also the lobby - it was jam slammed packed. We hung out and relaxed there for quite a while actually. Really really enjoyed the experience and the lessons on brewing and bottling. Great little place to taste some new brews and hang out. read more

We were in the area for vacation and wanted to try a new brewery. Very cool looking place--unfortunately the service and the beer were both bad. Both bartenders were grumpy and unfriendly. Usually the people working at breweries are friendly and eager to talk about their beers. Not these two. The only time they seemed happy was when people asked to close their bills and left. The beer was not good. The Leopold was so bad that my boyfriend actually spat it out. The table next to us left behind a table full of beer. Oh well. A great beer experience at Westbrook! We usually see it on the way into Mt. Pleasant and say we'll stop there one day. This time, we did! We ordered two flights, giving us 8 different beers. Our faves were the Citrus Ninja, the White Thai beer, and the Marzen, but it was awesome trying the Mexican Cake. Would be kick ass with Vanilla ice cream! I loved their tasting room and they have great merchandise. The staff here was not very friendly and welcoming, though. They acted like they were irritated that we wanted to try one of all the beers. There were three people behind the bar and at that point only three customers. We probably would have ordered more beer if they made some suggestions and acted like they wanted us to actually be spending money there. We knew nothing about the beer and they offered no information or explanation. We'll def go back but the customer service cost them a star! read more

I will have to admit at first I was not a fan of Westbrook beers and I can't tell you why, maybe I was so hooked on Holy City ales I didn't give this place a fair shake. But find me a cookout in SC I and will damn sure have a One Claw or a White Thai beer in my hand. So their beers have definatley definitely grown on this beer snob for sure. Do yourself a favor when in chuck town and tour this brewery or stop by the tasting room, you won't be disappointed that you did. First stop on a beer tour of the Charleston area. The beer was pretty good. I enjoyed some of the off the wall stuff they had available. They had a brew on tap they brewed for another company, a donut tasting breakfast stout. It was very different. The place was not open yet when we pulled up. Of the three on the tour, this location was the only one air conditioned and it was a welcome relief in July. The tour guide let us in and gave us a tour of the building. It was the best looking building on the tour. It reminded me of a winery instead of a microbrewery. read more

We visited Westbrook for the first time the Saturday after Thanksgiving. If you are interested in craft beers and hanging out local breweries you have to stop by. Located off Long Point Road, Westbrook is not exactly in the most convenient or easiest to find location. However it is very noticeable when coming down 526. Look for it right next to Sky Zone. It's a simple building with a small bar in the front, a few tables to sit at it on the patio, and Brewery in the back. They are actually expanding next door. Service was great. There were two nice looking bartenders who were very helpful and ready to answer any questions. You can try beers by the pint or order a flight and try 4 4oz beers of your choice. They also sell beer by the 6 pack and merchandise to take home. Craft beer isn't really my cup of ...beer? But it's always fun to go try new things. I prefer a good cocktail on the rocks. They carry around 20 different beers on tap at one time. I really like the gose, it's a very sour beer, but the whiskey sour beer was not for me. read more

Very disappointed. If you know a hipster that thinks they know a lot about beer and in actually doesnt this is the place they go. Just look at the clientele and listen to them speak and you know i am right. the Tap room is poorly laid out, there is no value in their pricing, they have a toaster oven in the corner heating food, service is poor, and beyond their 3 main beers there is nothing worth having. Of course if you listen to the owner give the tour you find out the reason for why things are the way they are. Nothing like the American dream of going to college and liking home brewing and because you liked it your dad gave you 1.2 million to go after something that wasn't a passion. Westbrook Brewing Co., the brewery, is without question a one-star spot. Westbrook Brewing Co.'s beer is like a three to four (above average). With that being said, my visit to the tasting room was awful. Others' stories of waiting around and poor service are dead-on accurate. After my wife and I had a seat at the tasting room bar, someone greeted us and handed us sheets for the beer flights. We filled our sheets out and then began to wait...once we hit the 20-minute mark we had to interrupt one of the crewmembers (while she was polishing glasses) to get some service. We weren't the only ones either. There were several people sort of looking around with that "is this really happening?" look on their faces. Imagine three or four of the worst bartender you've ever had just moping around the bar area, helping customers at their convenience. I was absolutely appalled by the level of service. This is a brewery. The staff working the tasting room should be enthusiastic about the beer and be willing to offer, at the very LEAST, a satisfactory level of service. In actuality, the staff should be hustling and ensuring that everyone is taken care of. All I can say is that Westbrook is lucky Stone has elected to stay out of South Carolina. I've been to Stone before and they have what I would consider to be a 5-star experience. Nevertheless, other breweries are going to pop up here in Charleston and for that I am grateful. read more

This seemed like a logical choice after driving for 8 hours. We all needed a break and a little birdie told me that they make an amazing sour. I only tried four beers: Blueberry Weisse Weisse Baby (8/10), Rhubarb Remix (7/10), Something New (7/10) and Mexican Biscotti Cake (9/10). The last one was wonderful. I ended up taking a bomber of the collaborative effort between Westbrook and Evil Twin Brewing home with me to share with the wife. Overall, the experience was great. I came oh-so-close to buying a shirt, but I reeled myself back in. If you're in the area and you love craft beer the way I do -- you should pay them a visit. read more

Gose is seriously the nectar of the Gods. I could drink this everyday and still not get tired of it. They are supposed to release it in cans the week of July 22nd ... can not wait. Went to the release of the Mexican Cake BA beers ... smooth as it could get. I don't quite understand $20 a bottle but I am not as a beer geek as my husband. As a beer lover.... I was excited to come here and see what Westbrook had to offer. Sadly, I was very disappointed. Beers are mostly sour abs not much variety. Was excited about the Mexican cake being advertised.... Only to find out it was gone in a day. Now let's talk about service. (What service?... Is what I really should say) my first trip to Westbrook was right after thanksgiving last year. Bad service. I chalked it up to the holiday season and being busy, so I gave them another chance. Went last week on an uncrowded week night....so no excuses. I met a friend at the bar in the tasting room and sat for at least 10 mins before someone asked if I wanted anything. 4 bartenders, all of them looked at me once or twice but decided 10mins later I might need something? After finishing my beer and it sitting empty another 5-10mins, I was asked again if I wanted another. Unbelievable. If you like bartenders that give you the cold shoulder, this is the place. If Westbrook is trying to be the place with "resting b*tch face" bartenders and sucky beer....they've nailed it! I live in Charleston and will never come back nor refer any friends here read more

This place is way too busy to only have only 2 bartenders. They make it hard to want to stay for a few beers since you have to come back up to the counter and order. If you can get a seat at the bar, do it because you are able to order from the bar. Though it may take some time as well. I'm a big fan of IPAs and though the Two Claw IPA was really good. I like Westbrook beers a lot, but would much rather enjoy it at other restaurants. Be sure to check their hours before coming, since their hours aren't typical hours. read more

The atmosphere here is excellent and a very cool spot to grab a beer on a hot summer day. I LOVE the white thai, but the rest of their beer is a bit too flavorful for my liking. It kinda tastes like your taste buds are being constantly attacked by a variety of flavors that you usually do not have the option of experiencing at the same time. Very confusing when you go in, rushed service, everything is listed on a chalkboard behind the bar but there is no explanation for the beers. Some of my favorites beers in the world are made by Westbrook. Gose, One Claw, White Thai and their IPA are all solid beers. They also do a lot of unique beers and incorporate barrel aging into the process. I also like that they brew for Evil Twin Brewing. My all time favorite Westbrook beer is their Mexican Cake stout. I stock up every time they make some. The facility is very nice. The tasting room has a hip and energetic atmosphere and the brewery is breath taking. Being located in Mount Pleasant with such a nice facility draws a certain crowd. If you are looking for a low key and cozy brewery to hang out at this is not the place for you. I personally do not go for tastings anymore due to the large crowds of pretentious douche bags that frequent the tasting room. Nothing against the brewery because I love their beer. I'm just not in to socializing with the type of crowd they draw. read more

We have been trying to get to Westbrook Brewery since we moved down here over the summer...and we finally did! We sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful weather with our pup Riley. I they need to expand their outdoor seating area as many people wanted to sit outside but with lack of seats they were unable too. I love how they allow dogs on the patio but again I think it can be much bigger and expanded around to the side of the brewery, just a thought! As for the main reason we went...the BEER. I knew I was not going to be disappointed as I am a big fan of Westbrooks beers. Service was friendly, interior is really cool lookin, and prices are awesome! This is an excellent brewery! They have really unique, interesting beers and inside is absolutely beautiful. They have a beer for everyone, but I kind of think they might like me more than you because they had an amazing Citra AND a killer black lager.
