One of two strip plaza Chinese takeout places at opposite corners of the Route 9W/Feura Bush Rd intersection. West Wok is located in the newer Glenmont Shopping Plaza. I was in the mood for Chinese takeout and I was in Glenmont. I flipped a coin to decide which Chinese takeout place I would go to. It was "heads" so I ended up at West Wok. West Wok is very small, with an open kitchen and a couple tables and chairs for waiting. I enter the place and the guy behind the counter was chatting very loudly in Chinese over his cellphone and would not get off. Since I was a bit in a rush, I grabbed a menu and circled my lunch choice, which was L5 Roast Pork Lo Mein served with pork fried rice and choice of soup (I chose hot & sour). The guy takes the menu and gives orders to the cooks in Chinese and gets off the phone. The cooks were super fast cooking my meal and the order was ready in 5 minutes flat! The total came out to $4.48 with tax, so I hand the guy a $5 bill and I was going to leave the change (52 cents) in the tip bucket for being very quick, but the guy shortchanged me keeping 37 cents, in a sense "nickel and dime-ing" me to 15 cents. Be warned to count your change. I get home and the hot food was actually pretty good, generous portions of tasty lo mein, with lots of lean roast pork strips. The pork fried rice was yellow in color with roast pork chunks. The pint of hot and sour soup was very-very spicy with lots of tofu, bamboo shoots, egg, pork, peppers, and spices. The overall food and service would've given this experience a solid 4 stars, but I have to stick with the principle, though very minor and petty and deduct one star for imposing their own tip underhandedly.

The subgum wonton soup, for 5 bucks is the best deal in the place. Enough for 2 people and loaded with good stuff.

On my short list of Chinese restaurants to try was Ocean Palace, and thankfully, they picked up right away. This was our first visit, and we will probably be going back. There were quite a few customers, but the place has an airy feel that was quite comfortable. Lots of windows, comfortable tables, and a very calm feel to it. Staff here was great: attentive and friendly, and very accepting of my ridiculous enthusiasm for soup dumplings. :) We lived in NYC for 30+ years, and a considerable number of my dining out experiences were weekend mornings in Chinatown in Manhattan (sorry, no experience with Flushing). We've eaten a lot of dim sum over the years, so we started with a dim-sum-esque variety (the edamame dumplings in veg broth were very good, but the spring rolls were too oily), then my husband ordered baby bok choy and shitake mushrooms, beautifully presented and which he loved. But me? I ordered a *second* steamer of soup dumplings. Yes, my Thx dinner was almost entirely soup dumplings, and I'd do it again next year (don't tell my grandma). The soup in the dumpling and the meat filling were excellent. The *ONLY* quibble I have is that the wrapper was thick, almost doughy. The regular steamed vegetable dumplings had very thin wrappers, much more what I was expecting. The thickness made it much easier to get it into your spoon with chopsticks, but, again IMO, it put the proportions off. As is probably obvious, I'm neither a chef nor Chinese, or I'd have a much bigger frame of reference. There is also always a wide variety in how different families make their biscuits, etc. The food at Ocean Palace was not the best I've ever had, but it was very tasty, and though the soup dumplings were not perfect, I'd have them for lunch today again if I could.

Second, because the hard working chef is once again quietly exerting his authority with small acts of independence. He brought out my lunch special himself but declined to give me a dinner plate (needed because the serving entirely covers the oval plate it was delivering on) and, once again, my pork with pickled cabbage had no pickled cabbage. Touche, Peter. The regular customer ordered items I would never consider, like walnut shrimp and egg foo young. But I'm sure it was still great, as was my no-pickles pork, as is everything Peter cooks. The guy is a gem. And he looks to be in good health after that mystery hiatus so I hope he'll be around awhile.

It's not fancy, but there's a notice in the window indicating it's up to code. The people are super nice. I went online to order lunch specials. Curry chicken. Beef with vegetables. Together, they cost just over $16 including your choice of soda or soup. I have to admit, I thought the food would be Cantonese style, but was soon as I walked in the staff was speaking Mandarin with me. So then I immediately realized the curry chicken wasn't going to have any yummy potatoes, which is classic Cantonese. Too bad. Still, it was well cooked and presented. The beef dish featured a bunch of different types of cool mushrooms. Since I don't usually eat fried rice and that's the only type of rice they offer, I found the meals a bit heavy. I was better off eating less rather than more. They made lunch possible and I'm glad for that.
