Review from perspective of a parent.... West on Centre is so great if you're looking to go out to a meal and bring a toddler! They are sooo good with kids there! The staff is super friendly and kid-cognizant (moving plates, candles, anything you wouldn't want near a little kid)...oh the days from dining on the barside are (for now:) long gone. They also give the kids crayons etc to keep them occupied. The dining room is also spacious and the acoustics are really good so it can be busy but you can still hear each other without shouting. The staff is not only friendly but the service is very fast and attentive so you can be in and out if you want to be. Kids menu is perfect too! read more

This place consistently has worst food !! Service mediocre at best. Out of convenience decided to try once more. Grilled chicken sandwich was horrible... chicken marinated in something that smelled terrible/ same chicken came on Cesar salad ... couldn't eat it. Burger ok / not much taste. This place needs a new chef / kitchen manager and vendor. They have to be buying the cheapest food and hiring the bottom of the barrel. Too bad .... My review for West on Centre is long overdue... I have been to West several times over the past couple of years for brunch, lunch, dinner, drinks, and for a function I had here. I like how West is open early for lunch on weekdays at 11:00am. I came here recently for lunch and started with the "chicken lollipops" then worked my way to the "crispy chicken cheese & bacon hoagie" with a side of truffle fries. I really don't have any complaints... the food, service, portions, prices, and ambience have typically been on point. The drawback for some may be that West only has street parking. West on Centre is the type of place I would expect to find closer to downtown Boston and not West Roxbury. Opening its doors over 10 years ago, West, in my opinion, has been little ahead of its time for the area. read more

Wish I could give it more stars, alas, the service and food quality were not up to par. This is our second experience at West where our waitress took our order and then forgot about us! We had to track her down for our drinks, re-fills and silverware. . The quality of the food is almost always perfect but the (special salad of the day) roasted brussel sprout and kale salad wasn't roasted. At all. Would have been so delicious if it were served to order but it wasn't our day. They had a function which seemed to require the attention of all waitstaff and cooks. This is what happened the other time as well. West doesn't seem to know how to forecast the staff needed for the kitchen or dining room when they have a function. And since they frequently have functions?...I don't think I'll be back. (I've eaten at West about 6 times across the last few years, but our last 2 times were within a month of each other and it's that kind of service that will have us going somewhere else). I was excited about having a Mother's Day Brunch/Lunch at West with a close friend and her family but that excitement quickly dissolved within ten minutes of being seated at our table. It took 10 minutes for our waitress to come to our table and fill our cups with water and take our order for drinks. We were given the brunch menu to order from which had a very limited selection. I asked about ordering from the regular menu and we were told that we could but they wouldn't be able to place our order with the kitchen until 3:00 pm. How inconvenient. I understand your kitchen is in transition from brunch to dinner but for an 80 table restaurant you should be able to manage that transition without interrupting your food service. We ordered from the brunch menu: I had pancakes, pork sausage & scrambled eggs with American cheese. My friend and her daughter ordered burgers while her son & mom ordered the chicken sandwich and pancakes. After we placed our ordered we were asked by (I'm assuming) the manager if we didn't mind being placed at another table since they needed to prepare for a party of 15 arriving at 3:00 pm and they were completely booked with reservations for the rest of the day. We actually didn't want to move but they coaxed us dessert on the house so sure why not. Service just became worse after this. It took 30 minutes for our food to come out. My pancakes tasted like wax and they were cold. My eggs came with cheddar cheese instead of American and I bit into something as hard as nail after my first bite of pork sausage. I didn't even want new pancakes so I opted for wheat toast to accompany my sides. My friends liked their burgers. Said they were juicy and cooked perfectly. My friends son barely touched his pancakes so I'm assuming they must have tasted just as bad as mine. The waitress came over once to check on us, kept forgetting to give us silverware, cream & sugar for the coffee and handed us the bill before giving us the menu for our "complimentary dessert". She informed us that she has a poor memory and she's new here. Not acceptable! We were presented with three options for dessert. Four of us had the Caramel Apple Cobbler because they were out of crepes. It had a good flavor but was extremely runny and far from warm. My friend's daughter ordered the Chocolate Flourless Torte which she loved. Overall I was extremely disappointed in the food and the service. I understand the waitress may have been new but that's still no excuse for the poor service. If she's still training then placing her on the schedule for Mother's Day was an abominable idea. Especially if the restaurant is booked for the entire day. I left this place feeling hungry and dissatisfied. They ruined our afternoon. The place itself is beautiful and decorated nicely though. If the service and food improve tremendously I may consider having dinner here. But that won't be anytime soon. I have been going to this place almost since it opened and I have seen both the good and the bad. On average it is a nice restaurant that wants to be a little bit more upscale than it really is. The Good: The food is pretty tasty. I really like the burger which they seem to always cook just right. I have tried many of the other dishes and specials and most everything was tasty. The owner is extremely nice. He always seems to be there and is very interested in making his customers happy. The atmosphere is about one step below upscale, which I like because you can be casual without feeling you're at an Applebee's. The Not-So-Good Everything they make seems to have applewood smoked bacon. It is nice at first but I prefer regular bacon in general. And no matter what some people say, bacon doesn't go on everything. Some of the staff can be extremely rude. The hostesses will ignore you and talk amongst themselves instead of seating you. That is one of my biggest pet peeves. Prices match the semi-upscale nature of the place. Some stuff is a little too expensive though. The Awesome They do takeout! YUM! read more

I have mixed feelings about this restaurant because when it first opened, it had the promise to be the upscale dining experience of West Roxbury, which is desperately needed in that area. When it first opened I had a lamb dish that was really outstanding. I was looking forward to great things from this place. I don't know if the primary chef left or maybe they had to cut costs but the food is just not good anymore. I've had the salmon which is mediocre at best and recently had the grilled swordfish with couscous. I've never complained about their side dishes which seem to come out pretty good but obviously a side dish does not make a restaurant. The swordfish was prepared fine but had absolutely no flavor. The sauce smothered on top of it, a tzatziki sauce, was definitely not a good pairing for this fish. As for drinks and desserts, the martinis are unimaginative and outdated and the desserts are sooo boring. Nothing was appealing. Perhaps the most satisfying thing about getting drunk is eating yourself out the morning/noon after. Why, I can even say that I'm not really an alcoholic, I just drink so that I can go out to lunch the next day. This is when you throw all your diet plan/schedule out the door (a process in which you had started the night before). With restaurants like West, they make grubbing a more enjoying experience. With freezing degrees weather outside, walking into this place was like a second heaven to me. The place was dressed in a homey yet trendy setting. The fireplace in the corner and the open kitchen seemed like an open invitation for you to come in, sit down, and have something that'd warm the stomach. The waitress was very cordial and attentive. About my age, she was like a friend that I could talk to (now if only she would feel the same and give me the friends and family discount). I ordered some fried calamari and a salmon burger with mashed potatoes. The calamari was fried to a crisp batter while leaving the meat firm and moist. The mashed potatoes was fluffy and creamy the way I liked them to be. However, the salmon burger wasn't as enjoyful as it should have. If I could get pass the dryness of the patty, the flavor was excellent. I couldn't help but to order a pear martini to the disdain of my hungover companions. A balanced mix of liqueur and mixer masked out the alcoholic taste in this drink. I probably could drink this all day. read more

We arrived after the dining room was closed, but a limited menu was still available at the bar. We had salad, quesadillas, and pizza -- and all were disappointing. The arugula salad was garnished with four goat cheese "croquettes" that tasted like they'd been frozen and reheated; the quesadilla was greasy, and the pizza was just bad -- I ate one piece of 8 and threw the rest away. The description on the menu -- prosciutto, goat cheese, and roasted red pepper -- sounded very nice, but there was too much salt, cheese, and grease, and the crust was disappointingly flavorless. After we left I felt the way I used to after leaving my college cafeteria -- full of heavy greasy food that I hadn't enjoyed eating. I think a 3 1/2 would be more apropos. First it was busy at 7:30 on a Saturday so we were given the option of the chef's table (pretty cool but not what we were looking for that night) or wait 45 minutes. We opted for the bar which was crowded and lively and, for the "suburbs" a place, as long as I had a seat, I would go to again. Based on the crowd still in there when we left it does to be a lot of people's "local". Star dropping event numero uno occurred at the bar when I was handed my beloved Miller Lite bottle, sans glass, with a sizable chunk missing from the top. Thankfully I noticed before drinking (well, drinking too much). Likely the result of the bar mounted bottle opener which most bartenders I know eschew for the gentler traditional opener. The replaced the beer and were nice enough about it but damn, that would have sucked drinking through bloody lips We were seated in a little under the time estimate. The menu is actually quite extensive and eclectic with French fare and uber thin crust pizza seeming to be the call. I got a very good steak frites (flank steak on French fries for us average Joes) for under $20. My date got a good mushroom ravioli. The issue was it was supposed to be sweet potato ravioli. She still enjoyed it I would go back again and maybe just sit at the bar as the appetizers seemed good. A bustling bar scene is a fun atmosphere and that's how I viewed it. My family is from West Roxbury and as long as West has been open we've been going. It's a step up in price and cuisine (but not selection) from the Corrib Pub down the street and is great when looking for a meal that's neither too upscale but not total pub 'n grub either. Beef seems to be a specialty; however the salad and vegetable selections merit a special mention. Service merits a particular mention. Every time we've been in here it seems as though we've required a special order or have brought along more people than expected. West has always accommodated our needs seamlessly and exceeded our expectations. As long as the food and service stay at their same excellent levels we'll keep coming back. Recommended. read more

This is a fabulous place with great ambience, excellent service and wonderful food. There is nothing about the place that we did not like. The bar area is gorgeous with a gas fireplace in the corner that you can sit around. I can see myself going there in the middle of a snowstorm. A great place to people watch. The place is full of windows for people to look out of. The servers are phenomenal. They are so knowledgeable about the menu and are not afraid to give their suggestions if asked. They are professional, funny and incredibly efficient. If you're craving for comfort food, this is the place that I would recommend. It has something for everyone. The desserts are also spectacular. I was on a date one night, the food was really stellar, we sat at the bar, my date ordered, the wine was great, the food was amazing(the date turned weird though) Unfortunately, I've never had the same great food experience after that. I always come here for my work holiday parties and other various events. The food is decent, but nothing special. On my most recent visit, I got their grilled chicken and fresh guacomole BLT. A bit overpriced for a sandwich in my opinion ($12), but still tasty nonetheless. Get the extra sweet potato fries! Those are worth the extra $1. The sign outside is kind of nice. It looks like the kind of sign that would be on a restaurant that is casual, but with spot-on food and a fashionable twist. That poor, misguided sign is outside the wrong place. Walking in, after reading positive reviews here, we came in with unfortunately high expectations. Reading the menu, and looking at the conspicuously open kitchen with cooks dressed up in their best, colorful chef coats, put me on edge. As we waded through the pretension (totally welcome in a better restaurant) eventually, a server arrived. After an awkward struggle with our wine bottle, we were treated to sweet, bland, just WRONG calamari, and a near-flavorless french onion soup. I'm pretty sure a Lipton packet would have been an upgrade. The next course was nearly as exciting-- a not-warm warm salad of wilty cold spinach, and lackluster burger. Again, service at this point would have been helpful. Explaining both that the warm salad wasn't a warm salad and that my gf would have to ask the hostess for condiments would have shown some good faith. The online menu is NOT updated, as the dessert menu lacked the well-reviewed strawberry shortcake. Instead, we were treated to a lackluster apple crisp, awful coffee, and waited for cream and sugar that never came. We did have the unique opportunity to listen to our waitress tell another table about her journey from some podunk midwestern town to Westie. While we weren't getting served... The good thing is, the restaurant has positioned itself nicely for a treatment on Gordon Ramsey's "Kitchen Nightmares." Let's hope Gordo gets here sooner than later. read more

The food is vaguely French the people are vaguely Irish and for locals; its a hot new hangout and exciting new place to go eat. It's near the JP hood, but not on the T route, The restaurant decor at West On is welcoming and kind of exciting. The food is o-ou, mediocre, wah. Our particular waiter seemed pissed off that he was a waiter but everyone else that worked there seemed really friendly, including the big Irish manger/owner, so maybe young dude's mercury was in retrograde or something. And the big bar room is a shiny sports/ upscale hook-up place and it seems happening for local quarter lifers, especially business types, if that's your scene. My auntie enjoyed her steak. But the mussels blew. The pizza was an afterthought. And the bread pudding was served in a trough. My California cousin ordered the salmon burger and said it was alright. Crab cakes pretty good. Other cousin enjoyed the French onion soup, a fine salty affair. Lemon sole, appetizing looking, yet dry. We became such critics, to my aunt's dismay, we were even criticizing the type of glass the Guinness was served in, a regular thin beer glass, for shame! My uncle will only order Guinness in a place that serves it in the proper thick glass! Well, a kind of good time was had by all for my aunt's retirement party. But the music was kind of loud, the lights dim, and too many cell phones were a-ringing for a family gathering. I spent a lot of the night playing with my niece in the pretty bathrooms. The food is consistently very high quality, i had the veggie burger last night and it was hands-down the best veggie burger I've had. In the past, i've had the in-season ravioli, the arugula and goat cheese salad, butternut sqush soup, and consistently, very good. The wine and beer selection is excellect and they have some great appetizers too. They are fair priced, though if they came down $2 - 4 on salads and entrees, i'd make this more of a staple restaurant rather than once every six months or so. The only reason they don't get a five star is that the staff isn't spectacular. Great place! Came here for brunch with my girlfriend and we both loved it. We both had omelettes, but everything on the menu looked absolutely delicious. We also got drinks which were also amazing. My bloody mary was awesome, although I regret not getting it with bacon and blue cheese which was their special for the day (or week?). I decided to check out this restaurant with my BFF of 20+ years who happens to live down the street. I went for an adventurous choice of the stuffed goat cheese lamb burger with red pepper sauce and french fries. The lamb burger was dry, the goat cheese dripped all over my hands, and the red pepper sauce was bland. Everything lacked flavor. Even the french fries were bad...greasy and soggy which usually means the oil is old. My sister loves this place and when I told her about my bad experience, she was very surprised. She said that the pizza and pasta dishes are usually good. Maybe lamb was not meant to be a burger!?! The layout is nice. This is a long overdue update... West has raised their bar and have been maintaining a great level of quality and service. They find interesting specials that compliment a already diverse pub menu. They also have dinner theme nights, had a great time at the Havana night, a Cuban meal and music with more than ample and very well done small plates. Each small plate had a specialty drink to complement it. Live entertainment was terrific and the waitstaff were incredible. West has become a regular on my radar for a quick meal with friends and family. read more

I have yet to go to the West for anything but brunch, but have been generally pleased with the food and service there. The staff is super friendly, the food is above average and priced well. I'd say around $8 for an omelette with sides etc. Their fruit pancakes are delicious! The only thing that I don't like about the West is it is generally super-noisy. The acoustics are terrible. Also, they have these wide mouth coffee cups and yoru coffee gets cold quickly. Thankfully there is usually someone close by to fill it up. read more

Accommodated a party of 10 (with reservations) for dinner on a Friday night really well. Since my friends are gregarious and abundant, this will really make or break a restaurant for me. The staff didn't seem angry or cranky about some of our party being late, and I (one of those late people) was offered a drink mere minutes after being seated. It was really crowded, but the service was great all night. Our water glasses were always full, orders were filled and delivered perfectly. For some reason, the beer list is on the menu and not with the wine list. This is awkward, because they left the wine list on the table after taking our menus. My bottled beer was fresh (it wasn't sitting in the back room for a year), and there was nothing funky about the beer on tap. The beer selection is slightly better than the average casual restaurant. I'm vegetarian and there was a lot to like about the menu. I settled on a veggie burger with lettuce, tomato and avocado (they offer other delicious-sounding toppings like caramelized onions and a few different cheeses. I passed on the pesto mayonnaise, because mayonnaise freaks me out) with regular fries. The burger was seriously crumbly, but delicious. It was way more on the grains/veggies side of things; visible veggies and no rubbery TVP texture to be found. It was well spiced and the roll was buttery and just a little toasty. The fries had a good amount of crispiness and were perfectly salted. It was a friend's birthday and they had no problem with us bringing our own cake. They brought it out with a few lit candles (I think we provided the candles?) and enough plates and forks. Hooray! Parking nearby is kind of crummy. There's street parking, or you can park in the Lord's and Lady's lot (there are a bunch of signs saying "for customers only," but the lot is huge and no one bothered us). I'd imagine parking would suck in the afternoon. We left through the bar area. It looked really cozy over there with lots of nooks for a small party to hang out. The location is really what keeps this place open. I've been several times and each time there's been some kind of issue with the food. First time, lamb burger completely undercooked. I mean completely! Had to send it back - it returned dry and overcooked. The other night I went back and tried the "St. Louis Ribs". I lived there. If you tried to pass these off to the locals there you'd....well, let your imagination work on what might happen (it's not good). The fat to lean ration was 3:1 at best. A big slab of fat on your plate, which covers up some greasy (and now totally greasy fries). Cole slaw on the side which looked and tasted like something from KFC. Oh, did I mention the bbq sauce? One of the key things to making outstanding ribs? Well, this was that sweet, tasteless stuff you get in a packet at McDonalds. Seriously - do not put St. Louis ribs on your menu with poor quality meat and bad sauce. Server was friendly but didn't seem to notice that I ate about one-tenth of the food on my plate. That's usually a sign to say, "something wrong"? I was so disappointed, and hungry and fed up with trying this place, that I just paid and left. My partner had a mediocre, bland piece of cod with nice mashed potatoes. We both want to like this place. We really do. But at the end of the day, the kitchen has serious problems. It will likely continue to succeed given how little competition there is in Westie but, sooner or later, the food quality issue will catch up with them. We live a block away and need to come here MUCH more. Food was fantastic last night. I had the braised short rib and potato gnocchi and my husband had the carbonara. Both were fabulous. A perfect portion served in a tall bowl and beautifully presented. Strong, delicious flavors and fresh ingredients. My toddler ordered Mac & Cheese, which was not on the kids menu, but they made a perfect kids meal by serving it in a sectioned plate with the mac in the middle, broccoli on one side and cheese shreds in the other (someone in the kitchen really "gets" toddlers). She squealed with joy when she saw the plate. Love the ambiance here. Can't believe they are not busier on week nights. Possibly because of the prices being on the higher end for pub entrees. I use to really like this place. I live just a few miles away and use to go there a couple of times a month. The restaurant has a table like a bar where you can see the cooks making you dinner. I am less abt to go there as after the first year the food seems less and less tasty as it once was. I am not sur eif they changed cooks or not but it has dropped a level. That being said they still serve good pizzas, good burgers,and good specials, but definitely not as great as it once was. It also seemed like we never needed a reservation. The service is always knowledgeable and friendly and timely and quick to ask if you need another before you're empty. read more
