Just got home to long usland after a fantastic bratwurst, belgian blanche weiss bier and yes, the best hot pretzel i ever had. My son was with us, in his wheel chair (after an encounter with an IED in AFG) and we all needed a nice cold beer and hot German/Austrian lunch. I live on this block, so I have been to Werkstatt a lot since it opened in 2015. It is definitely our go-to for when friends or family are visiting (even just from other Brooklyn neighborhoods), and frankly just for a nice weeknight dinner. I have two small children who are picky eaters, but they will consistently scarf down Werkstatt's pretzel and spaetzle. Weekday happy hour ($5 draft wines and beers) is awesome and they pour generously. Food is excellent. I don't eat beef or pork so there is quite a bit on the menu I avoid, but I love the brussels sprouts, risotto, celery root schnitzel, and especially the french onion soup. We are always stuffed but also always get dessert, and you can't go wrong there either. read more

I'll emphasize again that I've eaten there multiple times and the food was wonderful.] This is for takeout only. I've eaten at the restaurant and they were great. I had a feeling that takeout might be a problem, but gave it a chance. Risotto and the chicken liver appetizer. The former wasn't cooked properly, just tasted like undercooked rice (not creamy at all) with vegetables. The appetizer was cold and not very appetizing. Delivery was late. Not remotely worth the price. I'll still go to the actual restaurant, but the takeout just doesn't work (which I probably should have known, given the kind of food they serve). [It looks like the issue was more with the delivery service than with the restaurant themselves. I'll give delivery another shot at some point.] read more

The music was loud and bad. I asked them to turn it down - I was dining with my dad (who is 90 years old) he doesn't hear well. The owner instead of turning it down - told me if I wanted the music to be turned down - I should rent the room. whaa? I should add - they were blasting "Play that Funky Music White Boy". The food was good but the evening was miserable - the music was so loud. The co-owner (his wife) tried to reason with me - "We have to play the music loud otherwise the conversations get too loud." I told her the reason people talk so loud - is because they are talking over the music. Trust me - the restaurant was empty - we were there - my 90 year old dad, myself, my kids and one other 80+ couple. No one in the room wanted to hear Play that funky white boy at any volume. Every restaurant I go to with my dad - I ask them (nicely) to turn down the music - every time - folks are apologetic and turn it down immediately. Here? What a disappointment....we wanted so much to like Werkstatt. It's not only walking distance to our house but the neighborhood sorely needs something like this on this industrial, commercial stretch. Front room is crowded but atmospheric....back room much less atmospheric and way, way too loud and brightly lit. The cocktails were nice and the pretzel with liptauer was fantastic but after that, straight downhill. Our entrees arrived literally 5 minutes after ordering, a sure sign of pre-cooking. The schnitzel was sub-par and slightly rubbery, the sauerbraten special was dry and lacking in the gingery spice that is the stew's trademark. Spaetzle were too soft and covered with cheese too heavily to appreciate the spaetzle, the cucumber salad overly wet and too far pre-made, the pretzel dumplings were lumps of dough. The worst part was the linzer torte....there was barely a hint of raspberry jam filling; just a faintly visible line. Apple-cranberry crumble, a special was really good though. We might go back under certain circumstances but certainly no pressing need or want to.... read more

This is an awesome place in an unexpected neighborhood. My bartender was incredibly friendly throughout my solo meal, and he had great recommendations as well as passion for the beer and the menu. I love wit beers, so he recommended the wit beer with grapefruit. Perhaps it just hit the spot, but it was one of the best beers I've ever tasted. I literally could drink that for breakfast every day. I chose the delicious wiener schnitzel for my meal, and it was accompanied with an heaping portion of sauerkraut. I ate here not to long ago, it's funny I've lived on the block my whole life and when this restaurant came.. it took me years to finally try it. I never got a chance to dive into the food, but I did have their oysters. My friend and I went and had like 24 oysters.. I ate more like 15. I was eating the bigger oysters because my friend only likes the small ones. I felt fine in the beginning, but I started to feel a little weezy after a couple hours. The next day I was throwing up the WHOLE DAY! I couldn't keep anything down. It was horrible. I'm giving two stars because that situation really turned me off. Maybe I'll give it another chance to try their cooked food. But I'll wait a couple months so my stomach can relax, every time I walk by now I get nauseous :( read more

5 stars! My husband and I have been anticipating Werkstatt's grand opening and we were not disappointed! Side note: to the person who gave a review without even tasting their food...if you want a cheaper menu option, you should contact the owner or send them a note! Writing a Yelp review which has nothing to do with an actual dining experience is a bit out of place. Back to our experience: we stopped in on a summer evening for dinner. We got the pan fried Brussels sprouts as our appetizer which were absolutely delicious and generously portioned. I got the trio plate for $12 which was again generously portioned and thus a steal (chicken liver, pork belly, and cheese with truffle oil). My husband got the wiener schnitzel and a cider. Everything was excellent and in my opinion fairly priced given the quality and portion sizes. The owner, Robin stopped by and chatted with us a bit - she made us feel very welcomed and it was a nice touch to the whole experience. The space is rustic and charming - we sat out on the patio but am already anticipating winters in the main dining room being super cozy. We were too stuffed to eat dessert and I left with a doggie bag of my leftover super yummy liver which I used as a spread the next day. Met some Brooklyn friends here last night and they are very lucky to have this spot in their neighborhood. Fantastic, super-authentic Austro-Hungarian food. Endive salad with delicious creamy cheese, nuts etc was a great starter. Wienerschnitzel the best I've ever eaten, with thoughtfully prepared potato, cucumber salads on the side not just an afterthought. My friends had the chicken schnitzel, goulash, matzoh ball & chicken liver dumpling soup and all of them loved it. Dessert a light & tasty cake. Beers served perfectly. A charming spot with lots of vintage signage adding to the vibe, making you feel you're somewhere other than Brooklyn. Good music. Overall I would not hesitate to come back. Highly recommended. Ten minutes away from my food desert, surrounded by mechanics shops, 99 cents stores and Paki-Indian groceries, is this corner of Austrian comfort food. I can't even begin to describe what a Wiener Schnitzel can do to a battered spirit on a rainy night. You walk into this place and are enveloped in their warmth! My date and I ordered a fresh buttery pretzel, touted to be the "best in NY" with a spicy cheese and mustard accompaniment to start. Best carb loading I've had in EVER. It quickly disappeared just in time for the aforementioned Wiener Schnitzel with pickled cucumber, cabbage and potato salads and the Spetzel with bacon, both of which were stick to your bones, dig in each other's plates good. While I should have just had a second glass of Chardonnay post meal, we decided on desserts. Poire Belle Helene and Palatshinken with chocolate and hazelnuts (and a mountain of whipped cream) rounded out our grastro-Austro feast. We rubbed our bellies all the way home. Our first visit! We thought we were coming for BK restaurant week, but ended up ordering exactly what we wanted from the menu. That grapefruit hefeweizen is the best I've ever had. Liptauer was zesty and savory, Champignons were reported to be juicy and flavorful. They came with a lovely sauce. The Goulash and rosti were great. Not as spicy as I'd like, but it was definitely beefy! I added salt to both for maximum flavor.The Linzer tart was reported to be delicious. The sauerkraut was a tad too sour. My date reported that the Viener schnitzel was bland and dessicated, and he didn't like the pickled vegetable salads that came on the side. I ate as much of them as I could, but I have Next time he'll have the goulash and I'll try that Paprikash! We will be back. This would have truly been a Five-Star visit except that my date's entree was bad, which is the main food source at the meal. The fact that his meal wasn't good but he still loved everything else and would go back, that really attests to how high quality everything else was! Update: -Sunday's night grub was spectacular...wiener schnitzel and its accompaniments were authentic and unbelievably flavorful, and the beef goulash was a 5 star blowaway...every mouthwatering bite of the most tender brisket in a slow-simmered sauce left you wanting more...even with the spaetzle, it was satisfying but didn't not overwhelmingly filling...it was just right! -And now...the matzoh ball soup...it was off the charts, and made just like home but with that sophisticated flair only a chef will get right every time. They even served it in a bowl on a gold-lined plate (perhaps a Jewish new year touch)? You can't even get this at Essen down the road in Midwood, which cooks for volume, and not perfection. This is the real deal, and my only quip was the amount of perfect broth served with it, again, which was done completely correctly...the bowl was presented with half soup, half maztoh balls...again, it left me wanting more. -It'll be a place I'll head to for a beer and small plates or burger. The quality here is unmatched anywhere in the area, but the prices reflect it. If they do a 'gourmet' happy hour or eventually open for lunch when the public school and/or building finish construction, you bet I'll be there often because the price point will be a tad better, I suspect. Its market is already there, but it will expand with time and slight price adjustments. Love you guys, if I can just say it, and we don't even know each other. It's a larger pour, a 0.5l stein, with less alcohol content for $7," which to me meant it's there for taste and refreshment, especially in this humidity. (And they served that crazy delicious grapefruit beer that's "all the rage in Berlin" according to a friend who just returned from there.) But don't be fooled...this is going to be the coolest AND coziest hangout in Ditmas Park (and Kensington) once the sleet and snow return. Came on a sunny pleasant Sunday before it got busy so my friend and I got to enjoy the sunshine with our grapefruit beer! I got the Werkstatt burger with bacon-onion marmalade (with fries as I had the option that day to get that). Burger was cooked medium as I ordered and the bun was of a croissant texture which made eating difficult as the juices slowly disintegrated the bun, still delicious! I'm a sucker for places that give pickles on the side :) Friend had the goulash which was a lacking in protein but still tasty. We should have switched our dishes as he would have been more full on my dish. I learned that I don't like pies or strudel adjacent desserts as I only the crusts and none of the fruit filling. The Linzer torte was great! The tartness combined with the sweetness of the whipped cream balanced each other out! Friend also got the coffee with the Francisco liquid? (Forgot the name...) Our party of 8 was thrilled with our Werkstatt dinner experience. Everything we ate was absolutely delicious. Among our entrees were the paprika chicken, lamb shank, potato latkes, pork cheeks, schnitzel, bratwurst and the kase spatzle. Noteworthy appetizers included the pan-fried Brussels sprouts, giant pretzel with Liptauer cheese, the wiener gemischter salat and an appetizer involving a trio of fish. We've been here twice for brunch and once for dinner and have not been disappointed. They have a brunch special where you get a brunch dish and a brunch beverage for $15! Where in the city can you still get a deal like that? The dishes the we've had have been very hearty. They don't skimp on the portions and the quality of the food is amazing. Brunch items can vary from eggs and sausage (very hearty plate) to whitefish salad on rye (OMG yum). Definitely a keeper in the neighborhood and Robin is awesome! The first few times Id been to the restaurant I loved my experience, enjoyed the food and found employees to be friendly. However more recently i arrived with my one year old son in a stroller. The employee told me there were no strollers allowed in the back but i could sit up front right by the door if i wanted. I decided i would just fold up my stroller and sit in the back. Unfortunately my son ended up falling asleep and i needed my stroller. I noticed the family next to me had a baby as well and was allowed to sit with their stroller in the back. I asked kindly if i could bring my stroller and they refused me and i was surprised and had to tell them why the other family was allowed to have a stroller while i was not. They lied and told me they would be telling the other family they cant have their stroller either (while they were already almost done with their meal). The back of restaurant was empty by the way and we were the only two families there. I couldn't help but feel i was being treated differently when the rules for only applied to me. I left the restaurant and unfortunately will not recommend anymore to others or be back again. I don't want to hurt the business but i do think its important for employees to realize all customers should be treated equally. This is important if they want to stick around long term. read more

Werkstatt is my comfort food. I've had many items on the menu - schnitzel, spatzle, fried mushrooms, many times over. I love coming here with my husband for brunch with - friends or by ourselves. More than anything, the food stands out. It's easy to indulge there, but the heavier plates are usually nicely balanced with a side of pickled vegetables (which are also great). The chef/owner seems to be around most of the time, which is reassuring. It's a nice, cozy neighborhood restaurant. read more

A chef with an impressive legacy, a series of rooms and space with attention to cool detail, and a staff that knows what they're doing and really cares about your overall experience. It is also worth mentioning that the bar is really cool and gives me the feeling of somewhere I definitely love to hang out and hoist some Steins. I love, love, love this place. I love the food. I love the staff. I love the owners. I love it that they have a playlist that includes "Play That Funky Music White Boy." I love Werkstatt. Even though they've been open for just a few months, I've quickly become a regular. On the standard menu, you can't go wrong, but the specials are ... well ... special. Really out of this world. I'm not a vegetarian, but the fact that an Austrian restaurant has (more than one) really delicious vegetarian options is remarkable. I'm a red blooded carnivore, but the risotto and the celery root schnitzel are out of this world. Other favorites: the chicken liver terrine and the pretzel are phenomenal, as is the gorgonzola butter. The goulash and paprika chicken are terrific. They make a terrific burger. Anything that comes with either the creamed spinach or the rosti potatoes should be on your "I need to eat that" list. The matzoh ball soup is perfect on a cold winter night, but the matzoh balls are so light, I have a feeling that I'll order it in the summer, as well. Save room for dessert. They're all delicious. This is a terrific place. Case in point--I was there last night for dinner, but I'm heading back, again tonight, just because there were more things that I wanted to eat right now that I couldn't eat in one visit. read more

On a cold night in Bklyn we found Old World charm and authentic food at Werkstatt, served by a friendly, knowledgeable host and staff. All our choices were delicious and plentiful, so sharing was a great way to sample specials and menu items. The pretzel appetizer came with 2 different accompanying items: mustard and a cheese spread. The chicken liver mousse was sublime. Entries of risotto, chicken paprikash and schnitzel did not disappoint and the dessert of chocolate and hazelnut crepe was a perfect ending to a very satisfying meal. We shall return soon! read more

Thomas, the owner of Werkstatt, has a temper. His reaction to our request to speak to the manager about a $6 charge for 2 cups of hot water with lemon was scary. In an intimidating tone he said he had to pay for the slices of lemon in our hot water and the sugar. Then he told us to never step back in his restaurant again. How dare he talk to two woman that way. He should have kept his $6 and saved us from his wrath. read more

Okay, we were there again Saturday night. It was crowded, which I was happy to see, but everyone was very happy, and the owners greeted everyone like valued guests. It was like a Brooklyn version of Cheers! The Austrian food continues to be amazingly good. The chef came up with an Austrian Fried Chicken which is quite wonderful. But don't sleep on the non-Austrian food. Thomas (the chef, with very impressive credentials) came up with an amazing Ramen noodle concoction. Not soupy, which is what I feared. Ramen with Beef and Veggies, and the noodles were meaty and delicious. The grapefruit beer continues to be delicious and addictive. The chicken liver dumpling soup (Leberknoedel?) was wonderful. I just wish I could have eaten more. There are so many things we missed out on! I want to try the house-made Bratwurst. I want the Giant Pretzel again. I want to try the Kielbasa and Calamari combination. I want to try the Chicken Liver Terrine. Guess we'll have to come back again. read more

Food is solid here but have to agree with the less positive reviews of the staffing/management. I've been here half a dozen times when the restaurant was completely empty and told that I have to sit at the bar, in the event that the restaurant fills up because we were with an odd number of people. Of course, the restaurant never filled up while we had dinner. Everyone knows that our neighborhood is slow and sleepy as it is, with very little foot traffic. My partner and I gave this place more than three strikes, every time we visit there is some kind of rule that we're breaking just by trying to sit down and be patrons of this place. Its a shame because again the food is good and the drinks are good but the staff/management kill any positive or neighborhood vibe that is established by this restaurant. read more

Another find made by foodie friends. Came for brunch. We were seated immediately at 11am on a Saturday in a sunny back room. $15 for a ham, egg, creamed spinach and potato spread with coffee and a breakfast cocktail included (I had a tasty grapefruit beer). We spit a warm doughy, butter brushed pretzel that came with mustard and a cheese dip. The service was stellar, with water and coffee constantly refilled and plates cleared in short order. Loved the music too! Three hours later and I'm still pleasantly sated. Will have to make this a regular stop on my trips to New York. Be warned that they only take cash and Amex! You have to have the pretzel with cheese -- have been here twice in the last month or so, the menu was slightly different the last time we went, so I'm thinking when they first open (at 5) it's more of a dinner menu where as the later menu caters to a different crowd that comes for the bar. I haven't had one thing here I didn't like. The service was great, the staff is friendly, and the owners were on premises both times checking in on customers. Very home-like comforting feeling - and a ton of beers to choose from! If you get the chance, sit outside in the back. It's more spacious and on a cool night, it's perfect. read more

Some hits, some misses.Great beer,wonderful service, and a beautiful glass enclosed dining area. I ordered the Porkchop special. Not a good idea. It was an inexpensive cut, and poorly cooked. The bratwurst and squid appetizer was so-so. On the plus side, the pretzel and liver appetizer was outstanding. The apricot crepe dessert, we all agreed was the best we ever had. Would love to see a good German style restaurant make it in Brooklyn, but I think the chef needs to pay more attention to what's being bought and who is doing the cooking. The service was good. The food was not so great though. I ordered a special of salmon and tomato fettuccine. The salmon had good flavor but was way too undercooked which was gross. I visited Werkstatt for happy hour with co-workers. Friendly staff. Great service. Good for big groups. Lots of drink options for everyone: beer, cider, wine, cocktails. As a non-beer drinker, the fact that they have draft wine was a pleasant surprise! Food options are more limited, but I was happy with the choices. The pretzel was good, but I loved the mushrooms. I don't know if it's because I'm on a big mushroom kick right now, but they were delicious... I'm still thinking about them. Happy hour is Mon-Fri, 5-7pm. Cash and AmEx only. read more

Had a great brunch here with family that was in town visiting. I got the eggs & sausage w/ coffee & Schöfferhofer Grapefruit Beer. Others at the table ended up ordering that beer as well as it was so tasty.
