You not only undersold us (we get multiple rounds) but pissed off someone who used to work in the same position as you before but knows no matter what, you treat everyone how you'd like to be treated. To the wretched waitress who killed our good night, we aren't sorry we sat down in your section, that's where we sit when we patronise Werkstatt. We aren't upset that you treated us the way you did, we are saddened that your issues lost the place that employs you a number of friendly locals who bring friends and family out quite often. read more

The following statement is possibly the greatest compliment I have ever paid to a restaurant/eatery. The matzoh ball soup almost tastes like my grandmother made it. I've eaten matzoh ball soup my whole life, it is easily a top 5 food for me. Everyone in my family makes it, including myself and I have never ever paid for matzoh ball soup anywhere and thought it was comparable to home made. That includes Jewish delis and diners. I'd come back for the soup alone Otherwise, the place is real nice and slightly out of place on Coney Island ave. The service was just fine and environment was nice as well. The pretzel was good but I was not a fan of the cheese dip. The schnitzel was crispy and tender, but I didn't like the sides. Bland potatoes and cucumbers. I live just around the corner from Werkstatt and it is a great option if you want a filling meal. I recommend the pretzel, it truly is the best in New York City. Another dish I enjoy is the Bratwurst with Sauerkraut and Potatoes. The Matzoh Ball soup is also very refreshing on a cold day. The only reason I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5 stars is that their meals are very filling and leave you feeling heavy and sluggish afterwards. On rainy and cold days this can be nice but if you have a long way to walk after the meal it may be uncomfortable. OK, I might be a little prejudice, because I went to law school with one of the owners (or managers, whatever she is), who helps run this place. There is a wine bar her in the true sense of the word. There aren't too many that have the same feel, and it is up there with one of my favorites from Brooklyn, as well as one in Sidney, one in Mnahattan, and one, which happens to be in Jersey City. It is pretty unique. I love some of the appetizers - though some are a little more creamy then some people might like. Ask your server about it, if you have any questions. I will let others speak to the entrees, including schnitzel, which has already been reviewed. The food here is great, but I cannot say I am one to be reviewing German entrees. Just saying. Finally, the dessert is phenomenal. I would personally recommend their Linzer torte, with hazelnut, although there are several other crepes and desserts - often mostly with some kind of fruit or compote - that you will greatly enjoy. Talk to your server about how to pair it with a dessert wine. There is a particular dessert wine - a white - that really explodes the taste of all these desserts. If you have any issues, talk to Robin, and say Ezra sent you. Again, just saying! The table by their wood-burning stove is the very best, though they have some beautiful tables by the bar. Nice atmosphere and a great tap beer and tap wine selection. Started with the giant pretzel which was delicious and giant, as promised. The housemade bratwurst was also delicious, but the menu stated it came on "country bread" which made me think it would be on a roll of some sort. It arrived to the table without any roll, and only when I inquired was I brought a plate with 2 slices of rye bread. The other items we ordered, beef goulash with spatzel and pork schnitzel were under seasoned and quite bland. Similarly, the rosti potatos were underwhelming and mushy. The mussels appetizer was also lacking in flavor despite a broth that looked the right color and was full of garlic. The waitstaff was very friendly, though the owner was a bit short with us when we were seated at a table that "she had been reserving for someone else!" That interaction could have been handled more gracefully between her and her waitstaff without us the customer being made to feel uncomfortable. Overall I would probably return, but only order certain items. My dinner companions were less convinced about a return visit, which is unfortunate as they live just steps away. read more

The quality of the food is that of a much more expensive restaurant. In fact, in all my years of ordering flan and creme brûlée, which is my favorite type of dessert, the creme caramel at Werkstatt was the best I've ever had. We got a few appetizers to start, all of which were delicious, so I just had a chicken liver pate for my main course. This was great because everyone else at the table wanted some, and then more after they'd had a bite, so I got to taste many main courses in exchange. They were all delicious. One that surprised me the most was the paprika chicken, which was done perfectly. I shouldn't be surprised though because Thomas is such an acclaimed chef. Everything he does is top quality. The grapefruit beer that was recommended was delicious as well. Now I have to go in search of that, a challenge for sure. Finally, the neighborhood was a big surprise. Who knew that there was a square mile of mansions with front lawns and picket fences right in the middle of Brooklyn. It's worth going there just to see that. read more

I love this place! It's the only one in the neighborhood that I keep coming back to. Pro-tip: always sit in the back for dinner. Nice and cozy in the winter, and they have outdoor tables in the summer. Food is always solid. Goulash, Kase Spaetzle (best way for an adult to get away with eating a plate of Mac and cheese with bacon as an entree), all the veggies, and the SPECIALS. There is always gold on the special board. Tonight there was a tuna Vitello, with turkey breast instead of veal, served on an arugula salad. This was a perfect summer dinner! Wine selection is pretty good. Space is great and the ambiance is a huge plus, great for friends and great for dates. CASH ONLY hence minus the star but ATM inside. The owners are so friendly and give it that local feel. The grapefruit beer is delicious and I hate beer! Brussels sprouts are delicious, matzo ball soup is good but not great, could use more flavor and the pretzel is perfect with the cheese and horseradish sauces. Stopped by here for dinner with a friend and my toddler in tow. They were fine with my kid, and just asked we park the stroller in the front. I was curious about the chicken schnitzel, mostly for all the sides, but my assistant was adamant about having a burger, so we split the burger, medium, with gruyère. It came out cooked to my liking on a nice roll that unfortunately didn't hold up to my slicing it in half, and it got pretty squished. Anyway, the cheese was melty and delicious. The veggies are served on the side, some weird stewed tomato, too-thick purple onion, a forgettable pickle, and enjoyable arugula. The potato whatever on the side (like diner hash browns) seriously needed salt and were served at what I assume is a food-unsafe temperature of just below ambient temperature. Maybe this is how they do in Austria, but I was in Brooklyn. I was also a little puzzled that a place that serves mustard with pretzels doesn't serve it with a burger. All we got was ketchup. Anyway, my toddler and I split this and she loved it and asked for more - quite enthusiastic for a kid who just ate half an 8 ounce burger. I do wish they had offered a side plate for my kid, but we made do with a napkin. The side of cucumber salad was okay, a little vinegar forward, a little mushy. I did enjoy the draft Malbec and the pour was generous. It was a nice place to have dinner and watch the sun set. read more

Came here with a friend because of a good review in New Yorker magazine. The food: Pretzel was good, potato pancakes very good, Chicken and spaetzle in a paprika sauce boring. The atmosphere was the best part - cozy. It was icy cold outside and first thing we wanted was hot tea. They didn't have decaf black tea so we asked for hot water with lemon. The bill arrived with a charge of $6 for the water. We called the manager over to ask about it. Didn't ask her to remove it from the bill but thought it was out of line. Next thing, the owner came by. He said the lemon and packet of SweetnLow cost him. Within seconds, he flew into a rage telling us never to come back. He was way in our faces and frightening. An assault over hot water. Not such a smart businessman if willing to allienate us and probably others sitting near us over lemon. No problem not coming back. The food wasn't worth another trip. This place is the new local "go-to" where the grapefruit beer flows like water :) The menu is fantastic but be sure to try the specials as Thomas will surprise your tastebuds with some of his culinary creativity. We read about this place in The New Yorker not too long ago, and finally had the chance to venture out here. While it's in an odd location in what seems like the middle-of-nowhere-Brooklyn, it's an easy ride on the subway and a short walk after. And, it was well-worth the effort. Having eloped in Austria not 4 years ago, we were well-versed in traditional Austrian food. The owner and chef, a Vienna native, doesn't disappoint. The pretzel was great, the homemade bratwurst top-notch, and the risotto was mind-blowing. We then opted for the special dessert - a devastatingly light orange cake that, while we had no room left to spare, was inhaled along with a great Austrian pine digestif. They have some great Austrian wines on tap as well. We recommend doing as we did and ordering a bunch of plates to share so you get to experience more.
