My first time in the Albany area as I am here for a work trip. Stumbled upon Wellington's with a 3.5 star review and thought let's get give it a try as I was with my dad. To say the least every part of this experience got better and better. Our server, Brett was enthusiastic and very honest and knowledgeable on the food, actually he sort of lied now that I think of it. Only because every time he made bold claims about our next selection as we moved from appetizer, entree, to dessert, when we actually tasted it, it was somehow even better than his claims of being amazing, it was just perfect. Brett was personable, calm, confident, and fast providing top notch service. He knew his food pairings and what would be a perfect match for the palette. This comes from a food and beverage foodie. I live in NYC and I've traveled the world. The tuna niçoise salad at Wellington's is one of the best reimagined dishes I've tried anywhere. The campfire dessert was phenomenal as well -- basically like s'mores in a mason jar, topped with actual smoke that billows out when you open the jar. Service was excellent too: friendly and efficient, our server got us out in time for a meeting we were rushing to and was attentive throughout our meal. They say the way to someone's heart is through their stomach, and Albany, you now have my heart. read more

We wanted a quick brunch after Cider B doughnuts and this Resto at the Renaissance had ample seating and great vibe for my friend from the city (that's what we call NYC). Anyways, the food was nothing impressive with the eggs that tasted like those ones that are cooked and boiled in plastic bag. Her Maine crabs Benedict tasted frozen since it was watery and bland (and we were just in Portland the weekend before so disappointed). Anyways, servers were nice but seemed understaffed, we waited around 20 mins for the check which we told them we needed since she had a bus to catch back. PLEASE BRING BACK THE BRUSSELS SPROUTS YOU OPENED WITH AND HAD FOR YEARS!!! I can honestly say that several friends said the same thing about how they were turned once they experienced there. Golden browned and tossed in a balsamic reduction/nut/mustard seed/cheddar sauce. They were AMAZING. New recipe is okay-I get that every chef has to put their mark on things. Just know that SO MANY that come to the restaurant locally and those that travel in for "in session" go there specifically for the trademark dish that largely put the restaurant on the radar of so many. Even at conferences, guest speakers have spoken about them!!! Don't take my word for it, survey your guests and regulars! I was pretty unhappy with the service although the food was good. Here is a breakdown of events: We waited for a long time to be seen at the table. The server was very kind and offered us free chips on the house for the long wait. We both started with water which took a long time to actually get. I understand it was busy but, we shouldn't have to wait for water! We ordered our full meal when our server returned. We also ordered alcoholic beverages. I highly recommend the speciality cocktails. The bartenders did a GREAT job! Sadly, our cocktails did not arrive until after the first course was over. Speaking of the first course: we ordered the mussels. They were delicious, that was until I found a hair (looked like an eyelash?) in my food. It was so gross. The server never came back to check on us during the appetizer so I could not tell her what I found. When she came to pick up the plates, I was just over it and didn't want to look at it anymore. Then, our meals came out. The cook is amazing! The braised beef was DELICIOUS - I highly recommend this dish. The embarrassing part, though, we never got our chips. We had to ASK for our "complimentary" appetizer! An appetizer, beverage and full meal later, we still did not receive them. I don't mean to sound like a snob but.. what the heck??? Also, I was ready to order more drinks but never once during our meal did our server stop by to ask how it was. Nor, did she ask if I wanted another drink! I was shocked! This is the way you rack up the bill! At this point, we started to listen to the conversations around us. It seemed like the table next to us was also having a not-so-great experience. I am not sure if this was an off night but I was glad I stopped in for restaurant week and did not pay full price for my dining experience. And lastly, at the end of the night, I found myself chewing on ice cubes because I was so thirsty and no one stopped by to ask if we wanted more water. I am not sure if I will be back. I am happy with the main meal but between the hair, service and lack of attentiveness, I do not think I would be willing to pay full price. The food, though was good. This is just a bar review, but it deserves it's own call-out. Nate - he's easily the most consistent and solid bartender on staff, although the rest deserve a nod as well. He always has the ability to surprise with new cocktails when requested, or make something on their seasonal menu perfectly. The only thing missing that 1 extra star is because the other bartenders aren't consistent in their cocktail making. This is the type of bar where everyone needs to be on point, because one missed drink can really turn someone's great evening into a not so great one. One of the reasons I love making this a stop on a weeknight is because of their not well known bar rituals. I've been meaning to write about this for awhile, and I've wanted to keep this as my own special secret - but it really deserves to be shared. Sunday-Wednesday nights include Wellington's bar rituals. At 6 p.m., if you happen to already be in the bar - you can share in with their bar rituals. Or you can skip, really up to you. But I suggest you try these out. They sample a creation from their bar, or highlight a local beer, cider, or liquor that is created around this section of New York. It's really great that they go out of their way to highlight a cocktail creation or a local slice of our area to anyone that wants to enjoy. Definitely a great stop for a cocktail, and a fun atmosphere. Love it for happy hours with coworkers or friends. read more

Wow! I never set high expectations for hotel restaurants, but Wellington's is exceptional. The drinks are amazing and the service is top notch. The staff is friendly and attentive without being overbearing. We enjoyed brunch and their menu had many options. I enjoyed the lobster Benedict and their lighter version of hollandaise. Wellington's is one of those places that the naysayers call "too cool for Albany," but as your authority on all things cool, I say "not a chance, naysayers!" Wellington's, and the renaissance lobby you can walk through to get there, is beautifully done. Like Paul Rudd's character in Knocked Up, I am almost overwhelmed with how many different kinds of chairs they put into this restaurant. There's plenty of nooks and crannies to allow for a private evening -- there's even opaque curtains near a few tables to allow some separation from other diners. I've been to Wellington's twice -- the first visit we had drinks and a cheese plate and sat at the bar. Although our bartender was very enthusiastic, and told us which cheese was his favorite, he did not know much else about the cheeses, and so we felt like we were making our cheese choices without our needed cheese guide. All that confusion cleared, however, when our cheese plate arrived with real honeycomb. Hooray for honeycomb. On our second visit, a group of five friends went to celebrate a birthday dinner with our friend who was saying at the renaissance. Our server, again, was very friendly, but we had to frequently look for her when we needed something. We split the hush puppies, which were served with a fantastic honey butter, but the $12 price tag for 4 hush puppies felt a tad too high, even for this cool place. These pups were, however, the best bite I had all night. We also ordered a cheese plate to split, and I was so, so sad to see it was served with a dollop of honey instead of my beloved honeycomb. Bring back the honeycomb, Wellington's! Honeycomb is cool. A puddle of honey is, well, just a puddle of honey! I ordered the mac and cheese with pork belly for my main, and also a side of fries (if you're gonna carb, do it right). The mac and cheese is considered an app, but also is a good enough size for a smaller meal. I thought the cheese sauce was a tad too sweet. The mac and cheese was stovetop cooked, and made me miss the oven baked crunchy bits I find key to a great mac. The pork belly was not nearly as crispy as I had hoped, and I ended up taking mine out. The fries, although served in an adorable mini fry basket, were overcooked. Two friends ordered the Caesar salad and both found the dressing to be "strange," and not like an expected Caesar dressing. They enjoyed the large Parmesan crisp that came with, but both didn't eat much of the rest. Another ordered the lamb, and asked the waitress to have it cooked to the temperature recommended by the chef. He was disappointed lamb came out medium well, and he felt it was unlikely that medium well was considered the ideal temp by the chef. As it was a birthday, we were served a complimentary dessert of a waffle with pumpkin ice cream and house-made whipped cream. Certainly tasty, but not something I'll get again if paying for it. Although we had a pleasant evening, the whole process took three hours, which was not something we had planned for. If you're considering Wellington's, be sure to work in enough time to dine, as eating here ended up being a serious time commitment. Ultimately, Wellington's is a beautiful place for a meal or a drink, but in the future, as the food didn't overwhelm any of us, return trips will likely be limited to drinks and apps. read more

Had really high hopes for this place. Obviously very chic and modern inside- just wish the quality of service better aligned with the atmosphere. I have no idea what the older bartenders problem is- but if he doesn't like his job nows the time to find a new one. Was really interested in one of the cocktails on the menu, however, he complained about how annoying it is to make, so I didn't order it. Then, when I pointed out he left four drinks off my tab, and out them on someone else's tab, he had the never to snap at me and questioned what the big deal was. He said it was just a couple of drinks, why should it matter who's tab it's on. For a place charging $8-10 per drink, it's kind of a big deal. Just really bizarre you would get this poor customer service from a place affiliated with the Renaissance. read more

Wow... is all I really have to say. I am incredibly impressed with the ambiance, service, and food at Wellington's attached to the Renaissance Hotel. Last night after a long day working and then driving from Brooklyn to Albany after school, my friend and I were excited to check into the hotel and order room service because just walking into the hotel, it was apparently clear that the food would be delicious. We viewed the menu on the tv under hotel services and called our order in to the front desk. Twenty minutes later, the food was delivered to the room by a very friendly and courteous man who brought us everything we needed including the additional two plates that we asked for to share our food. We ordered the Ceaser Salad with Grilled Salmon, Brussels Sprouts with Hazelnuts, and Vegetarian Ricotta Gnocchi with farm fresh vegetables. The food was quite good and hot, which is always something important to me. The salad was flavorful and cold and the salmon was grilled to perfection with a nice char and crisp to it was moist, not dry at all. The Brussel sprouts were delicious because the juxtaposition of spice, savory, and sweetness was simply awesome. These Brussel sprouts were prepared with chopped hazelnuts, grain mustard and honey, and a touch of spice which I believe was from chili powder. The Ricotta Gnocchi are unlike any I have ever seen or eaten before and were very large, almost like large marshmallows but slightly heavy and dense because of the ricotta. The gnocchi were tossed with sauteed vegetables and it was evident how fresh they were. The vegetables were giblets of corn, cherry tomatoes, and asparagus. I'm glad that we ordered it but I would not personally order that again. Overall, I was very impressed and pleased with the food and if we didn't want to go out and see some of the town tonight since we are here for a program that we are enrolled in, I would just order again and relax in the room. This morning, we went and ate in the restaurant and both ordered the Farmer's Omelette with whole grain toast and potatoes with rosemary. The omelettes were quite delicious and the ratio of spinach, onions, Swiss cheese, and bacon was perfect. The whole grain toast was crispy, hearty, and probably the best I have had in quite a long time. The coffee was strong and piping hot and the service extremely attentive, friendly, and quick. The server even recommended some places for us to go to tonight since we are not local to Albany. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone stopping through town on business or pleasure and enjoying the experience of Wellington's. read more

I have dined here on two separate occasions, once at the bar and once at a table. My overall experience was the same both times - great food but a lackluster experience as far as the service. Often times I found myself wanting another drink or the check and I could see the waiters/waitresses standing around talking to each other. Trendy, up-scale and hipster! What an exciting addition to the Albany area. It is named after the historic hotel that previously stood in its place. The restaurant is quite impressive both on size and details that make it charming. The hallmarks the millennialist will love including Edison bulbs, dramatic oversized leather booths, hexagon tiles that look like grains of wood, the list goes on.... So let's get down to the important things, the menu! At the recommendation of our waitress we started out with the Mac and cheese and the brussel sprouts. I also couldn't help but order the endive, beet salad. The Mac and cheese was warm, creamy and complimented by a little crunch on top and two delicious slices of pork on top. The brussel sprouts were phenomenal with a crunch from the nuts and perfectly cooked and seasoned. The endive salad was excellent with golden and red beets as well as feta all topped off by a dill citrus dressing. For my entree I ordered the duck confit with a pumpkin bread pudding that was to die for and root vegetables. Out of this world! My husband had the salmon which included a chorizo served with grits and a jalapeño gastrique. What a combination of flavors. We couldn't help but close the meal with a chocolate pudding, crushed graham cracker dessert served in a mason jar with melted marshmallow. A little jar of heaven! Ambiance is trendy but inviting. Great date night or place to go with another couple! Service was friendly and not pretentious like you might expect for a place like this. Albany definitely needs this! Love the atmosphere, the food and the drinks. Everything is well thought out and the hotel lobby is a page out of the NYC scene book. Complete with tablets for mobile check-in so you can go about your business without ever speaking to a human being- in true post-Y2K fashion. We had dinner on a Friday night and the bar, restaurant and lounge were all bustling. Luckily we arrived with enough time to get our choice of lounge vs restaurant for our party of 6. We started out with a round of drinks including the Philadelphia, El presidente, blackberry mojito and the maple bourbon smash and everyone liked their respective drinks. On the first round the Philadelphia was definitely the winner (although the second iteration didn't live up to the first, not sure why). We started out with the cheese plate and although the cheeses remained innominate, they were delicious! They came with generous portions for our party of 6 and no shortage of accoutrements. Definitely worth getting if you're there for a drink and need something to soak it up. On the night we came there was live jazz which perfectly complemented the mood. The prices were on the higher end- but I guess what you'd expect for the atmosphere. I opted for the duck ($21) which was good but I've had better. The rest of the party sampled the chicken ($24) and the short rib ($32) and everyone was pleased. Definitely a great spot for drinks and an app or a a nicer dinner occasion. I highly recommend catching the live music if at all possible. Bonus tip: you can play clue in one of their side rooms! read more

It is unfortunate that an upscale hotel- the Renaissance houses such a low caliber restaurant. They have a nice bar and bartender but the dinner food is just edible-salad with tough cold shrimp/ a good mojito all this for almost $ 40 with tip. The waitstaff at dinner is fine but the breakfast staff is so slow and incompetent thAt I finally had to eat breakfast at the Amtrak train station! In short if you have to catch a train at the Amtrak station in Albany of a flight I would not eat here/ as you will be late for your trip. read more

Excellent ambience. I love the interior here. You almost can't go wrong with seating. There are high backed booths by the window, curtained tables in the back, and comfy arm chairs by another window. The tables in the middle are the plain, boring ones. Fortunately for us, it was near empty when we arrived so we had our pick of seating. I chose the high backed cushion booths. They were intimate and romantic. Our waitress was friendly and recommended the Brussels sprouts, which we ordered. They weren't bad. Well-seasoned with a nice bite. We were staying at the Renaissance for the weekend and had breakfast one morning and then wine and cheese one evening. The reason I am not giving this place a 4 Star was because of the service/server we had for breakfast. A place of this caliber should screen their employees well. The quality of the food was superb for both breakfast and the cheese platter we had in the evening. Our bar tender (male and he practices martial arts) was excellent and his personality was on point for a bar tender. I knew that Wellington's was in a very nice hotel and I knew they'd have a great ambience, and I'm a sucker for decor. The place was modern, fresh, and very elegant. Everything else didn't seem to match its aesthetic level. My boyfriend and I ordered the lobster benedict. The food came about 25 minutes later and some parts were room temperature, with most parts being almost cold. The waiter had even warned us that the plates were hot, but they weren't, which was strange to us. We had the place to ourselves for the majority of the time, and the staff was generally slow getting to us. The staff was also seen giddily gossiping with one another at the bar just feet away, which struck us as immature and looked bad. The high prices did NOT match the quality of the food. If we were to return to Wellington's, it would be solely for the decor and maybe a drink at the bar, the most basic of which are $10, mind you. Sorry Wellington's, I really did have high hopes. If you decide to come anyways, make sure you check out the rest of the hotel! Absolutely breathtaking. read more

My work colleagues and I stay at the Renaissance Albany each week for work and even though we're "regulars" our service is still slow and very inconsistent. Food is decent, albeit overpriced for what you get. Steak came out perfect but was stone cold. Bearnaise could use more tarragon but was serviceable. Shrimp were cooked perfectly, but cold. We ordered a few veggie apps & had a two of their signature cocktails. We highly recommend the jalapeño hush puppies -- they were just the right amount of sweet & spice of corn bread. And if you like Brussel sprouts & mustard their app is a must -- you'll be happy they serve it a large bowl. Our waiter Javi & I share the same birthday so he graciously treated us to a dessert of s'mores cheesecake. Spent a bit of time in this bar/restaurant while at the Renaissance Hotel for a meeting and was very impressed! Drinks - I explored their cocktail menu a bit trying the Fiery Mayan (very good if you like the smoky flavor and can handle a little spice - if you don't like the smoky flavor this would be great with a tequila) and the Aviation (very similar to a Last Word - very refreshing drink) Food - I tried the Mac and cheese (with pork belly and a maple glaze) and was SO glad I did. The pork belly was delicious but the maple glaze took it to a whole new level. I wish I lived in Albany so I could come back for this whenever I'm craving mac and cheese! I believe the same kitchen catered our meals for the meeting which included delicious breakfast sandwiches, tasty turkey, roast beef and crab salad sandwiches, and a excellent beef with bacon (great cook on the meat and flavor) and a tasty truffled potato cake. I attend a lot of catered meetings and this was HANDS DOWN THE BEST FOOD. Service - all the servers and bartenders I had were excellent, friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. We were visiting Albany to see a show at the MVP arena. We decided to try Wellington's, not knowing that it was connected to the arena through indoor tunnels. That was a plus because it was pouring that night. The lunch was spectacular. The service was absolutely superb. Brett was our server, and from the drink selection to the meal, all his recommendations were great! It was phenomenal. My husband had a smoked whiskey, which was smoked tableside. Brett recommended a local cider for me which was so good. I have brussels sprouts appetizer and lobster grilled cheese that had so much lobster in it, including a claw sticking out of it. My husband had short rib tacos, and a huge salad. It was just great. Every suggestion Brett made was perfect! He was awesome! read more

We had wanted to try This place for a while; trendy atmosphere in a historic building; larger open space with a variety of seating. Monday night reservations at 5:30 for 3 during restaurant week. We were on time; however after talking to 2 staff we had to wait for "the hostess" we happily went to the bar- asked about "happy hour" we were told that at 6pm you get a free drink bartenders choice. We decided not to wait ordered a draft and a T&T=$19.50!!!! Wow, got seating, nice 3 course menu selection so I had the mussels in cream sauce which was nicely presented in the new asymmetrical white bowls, however they were not hot. They came quickly but perhaps if they had covered them or even warmed the bowls that would have helped. The garlic toast was a nice touch. The waitress serve the bartender special at 6 PM as promised however it was a disgusting citrus rye drink that I gave away I would've preferred to just have maybe a reduction on my two drink. My entree was a braised beef and polenta which was a nice presentation however the polenta was cold and the meat was like warm. I asked our server to heat it up; my companions had almost finished there by the time I got mine back. My friends had the cod which was OK,and the ravioli which was a lemon sauce and she was happy with it. The worst part is that it took 20 minutes to get our desserts. The pear strudel was quite nice which my companions had I had the Italian zeppole and Nutella which was basically and stuff donut hole that was very heavy and Cakie. The pastry in the strudel was quite nice. It then took us 10 minutes to get the check and another 10 minutes or so for her to pick it up so we did not leave there till 730. Although this looks like a fun trendy place if easily became quite loud and frustrating to enjoy conversation due to the lack of sound absorption. The chefs did try to do a nice presentation however the basics of warming up dishes and or putting a metal top on to keep the heat in would've totally improve the experience. If I'm going to pay top dollar I want hot food tasty food and a good atmosphere as well as good service that is why I will not be going back at this time. read more

I remember when no one wanted to go to the Wellington. But a new owner and a massive development project later, you will want to go to the Wellington. We went for restaurant week but I ended up ordering off the regular menu. When we arrived a local lounge act was playing and it was good. Sensing my friend and I were looking to chat, they sat us by a window with a great view of the capital. The music wasn't so loud on the far side of the restaurant. But really, if you do go reserve the cool booths with individualized decor. It looked more cozy. The Wellington wine menu is expansive with several lovely bottles in the 28-36 dollar range. Very reasonable for good quality. And there were several offerings such as Chenin Blancs, White Bordeuax, and roses from several regions. I didn't pay as close attention to the Reds - as a Catholic, Friday nights during Lent are meatless. However, the list looked equally as varied and good valued. My friend stuck to restaurant week. Her salad was a bit underdressed, she liked her chicken and loved her donut dessert. I had corn fritters as an app and they were excellent. Perfectly fried with the right balance of spice and honey and salt. They are large enough to split, but you may not want to. I had the house made gnocchi and all we could do was call each a pillow of joy. These are more potato than filler and were pan seared. It was a unique and appreciated way to serve them and a good delivery system for the cream sauce and peas. I was also impressed with the amount of lobster - at $28 I was hoping for a piece or two and got much more. We were loving the music so stayed for a last cocktail. Each was excellent and fairly strong. A few notes: - Sparkling bathrooms. They even smell clean, even at 10:30 at night. - Our server must have been working through her first day. I had a great lunch at Wellington's today with my daughter. The food was great, my daughter loved her burger and my spinach salad was fresh and delicious! My wife's filet was over cooked. She asked for medium rare & it was med well...border line well done in spots. $37 filets need to be cooked right. Wellingtons is a beautifully styled restaurant. A real treat especially if you consider that it's in a hotel. For the price point however it has a little bit of work to do to refine its dishes/service in order to realize its full potential. The thoughtful presentation stood out with every dish. The hush puppies were light, fresh and fluffy with a good crisp. But we would have loved a sauce with them. The duck poutine was great but needed a bit more cheese. We only had a few curds. The duck meat and gravy however was super moist and flavorful. It was a great upscale twist on the Canadian classic dish. read more

I've reviewed Wellington's before for dinner (and it was amazing) but today I went for lunch. My coworkers were all very happy with their dishes and I got the burrata salad. I've been here twice so far - the first time for dessert post City Hall dinner - and boy, did I wish we had started the night with dessert. The night my friend and I stopped by, we ordered the Campfire Mason Jar. Chocolate pudding topped with crushed graham crackers and a toasty marshmallow fluff. As soon as the mason jar is opened a smokey woody cloud of air greets you and it's absolutely wonderful. On certain evenings, Wellington's also offer a free mixed drink tasting. The mixologist explains what goes into it then serves you a decent sized portion. My next visit was for dinner. We were tucked away in a corner booth, so it was hard to get the waitress' attention. Starters A kale salad (not on the menu) with sunflower seeds, cranberries, butternut squash and a slightly sweet dressing. I devoured this and didn't leave much for my friend =] Pork Belly Tostadas - I can't even begin to describe how delicious this was. The tostada was light, not greasy, topped with the pork belly and pickled cabbage. I could've had this as my entree. Entrees Housemade Ricotta Gnocchi - umm, where has this been my entire life? Wellington's gnocchi are easily triple the size of regular gnocchi, but just as pillow-like. It's topped with lobster which makes it even more decadent. Fish (not on the menu) served with cheesy risotto. Oh, my. My leftovers tasted even better the next day. Wellington's food is exceptional, but service is not up to par considering the amount of money you'd have to drop for dinner. Despite that, this is easily one of my favorite places in Albany.
