My husband and I came to Wellington's for dinner. We expected to have something similar to fine dining but apparently we were wrong. Our server Raiysha first stopped at our table 20 min after we were seated and just asked "do you guys want some drinks or food?". We were ready to order right away and placed an order for 2 entrees and drinks. Server informed us that my lamb chops will take 25 min and offered some chips meanwhile we are waiting. She never brought us chips and haven't checked on out table for 1 hour. Someone else brought me my drink and food was delivered by someone else as well 45 min after we ordered, not 25. Our entrees were not hot, barely warm. The actual food was quite tasty but the fact that it was cold took away all deliciousness. Raiysha finally checked on our table when we were half way through our meal and we informed her that food took 45 min and came out cold. We asked for a check that toot another 20 min. Food and beverage manager took one of our items off the check but we'd much rather pay full price for the meal and have decent service and therefore warm food. read more

This place is amazing. This is my third time here and could not wait to eat the pork belly Tostada. The hush puppies are so awesome but no doubt will be much better during sweet corn season. (Sorry chef! I feel your pain in April) The bad part is the food is so good there is no reason to go to other places in Albany. When I stay at the Renaissance I will no doubt be dinning and drinking here. I've only ever eaten at the bar and the bartenders are top notch. Great place. Thank you. From a guy that eats out a lot! Service was fine. All the food wasn't. We have our wedding guests staying in this hotel in a few months so we felt it'd be a good reason to try it. Homemade potato chips were good, Brussel sprouts had an unreal amount of cheese in them (?), panzanella has too much bread, hush puppies were bland and the wings were over sauced and just had too much garnish. Wellington's puts heart and soul into their food. Everything they served had a New Orlean-like southern charm. Refreshing flavors are something to look forward to at this inviting retro-meets-modern restaurant located just across the street from NY State's Capital Building. I started off my meal with duck confit poutine, hushpuppies, and avocado toast. All were packed with flavor, presented well, and didn't do a doozy on my stomach before my entrée. The avocado toast had skate which was almost a mix between tuna and bacon--yum. For my main course I had the filet mignon which was cooked perfectly and served with a scrumptious side of spaghetti squash and blue cheese bread pudding (which might be a contender for most unusual, but delicious food item). I was also overjoyed to pop open the lid to my campfire mason jar dessert and to smell a woody aroma of toasted marshmallow and graham cracker on the top of sweet rich chocolate mousse-still smoking! My friend and I were looking for a new place to meet for breakfast, and I'm thinking this may be our new go-to. The food was quite good---we had NY Benedicts, which, my hubby has made me something similar at home, but it was nice to find it on a menu. What impressed me, though, was our waitress, Natasha. She was exactly the right combo of chatty, attentive, sharp, enthusiastic. We're definitely going back. And I have to say I haven't been in the hotel in a very long time. Stopped in before a show at the TU Center. The place was busy... but it wasn't mobbed. That said - there was 0 service, friendliness or hospitality. We took the seats of another couple who, after getting frustrated for not being acknowledged, got up and left. We gave it about 10 min and did the same. All staff here need a serious refresher on customer service. All three bartenders (one woman and two men) made no acknowledgment of anyone... no "hi, will be right with you..." or "I know we are busy, I'll take your drink order as soon as I can..." They were literally ignoring everyone. Completely ignoring. Being busy, being under staffed when busy, is no excuse to drop all common customer service etiquette. It comes across as rude, untrained, unprofessional and disrespectful. There's plenty of other places to go, I won't be back. After a 10 min walk up, 15 min observing a trash fire of a cocktail service, we left with no desire to return or recommend. read more

If I could put no stars I would. My family stayed at the Renaissance Hotel and it was absolutely wonderful. However we went to the bar and the bartender was the rudest person I have ever encountered. We had a few drinks before heading to bed and he thought it was appropriate to give my sister a lecture about her life. He was very out of line and caused our whole family to be very upset. We will not be going there again. It's pretty bad when the bartender who is supposed to be selling drinks starts to tell a TOTAL stranger that she is going "down a bad road" because she is drinking at a bar. We visited Wellington's during downtown Albany restaurant week. Our dining experience was exquisite. The service from Javier was wonderful. He was attentive and kind and always asked us how we were doing and if there was anything we needed! I had the baby arugula and watercress salad, which was a fresh and delicious appetizer and the crispy rainbow trout. The fish was lovely-- a sprinkling of sea salt on a perfectly cooked filet, roasted potatoes, all atop a sweet and creamy pea purée which brought the dish together. My date had the short rib ragú (I think it was ragú) and the meat was cooked to perfection. The first two courses were wonderful and the meal ended on a fantastic note with our desserts. My flourless chocolate cake was decadent, rich and delicious. My date had the cider belly doughnut upside-down cake which was DELIGHTFUL. In each bite of the upside down cake had a symphony of tastes-- both distinctly delicious cider doughnut and juicy pineapple. I stopped in before a meeting and wanted to grab a couple sodas for me and a family member. It was hot outside and my family member is disabled, so it was an effort for him to walk up the hill to Wellington's. We wanted a couple Pepsis while we cooled off. I stood at the empty bar for 15 minutes. There was no bartender, but the hostess and server on duty kept eyeing me and ignoring me. There were 3 other people in the restaurant, at the time, who they checked on regularly. The staff and I locked eyes several times as they bussed dishes and chatted, and they generally just kept on about their business. Finally, I asked if a bartender was on duty. "Um, it doesn't look like it. They'll probably be back in a little while." And then they continued about their business. Rude. Forget it. First of all this is my 3rd meal and stay at this restaurant/hotel. The service is marginal at best, I am pretty sure Marriott did not have these employees through any training program. However. Everyone was courteous and trying to make our meals right. Food was poorly prepared. Vegetarian Ravioli should not be drowned in oils and salted especially when both were not even suppose to be on the order to begin with. Hamburgers were ordered medium rare were totally rare and French fries that were ordered extra crispy were anything but extra crispy. The salads were great. Let's leave this review on a happy note. I only come back to this hotel because of my Marriott rewards, but There are just too many good restaurants in the area to settle for this one. Much like the hotel in which it resides, Wellington's looks pretty on the outside, but is a travesty on the inside. The food lacked flavor or depth. The gnocchi was thick and dry. The martini's were bland. The food was on par with a Red Lobster or Olive Garden, not the Ruth's Chris that its prices would want you to believe. It's a hotel bar. You have to enter through the hotel. The bar is visible from the lobby. The bathrooms are down the hall in the hotel. It's hard to take the place seriously as its own destination when it's clearly set up to serve hotel guests for their convenience. The biggest benefit to the location is the view of the Capitol but the bar faces customers away from it. The location is somewhat irrelevant if I'm not looking at where I am. It makes being on that corner just less convenient rather than more awesome. It wants to be Manhattan chic but it doesn't have the drink selection to do that. The cocktails are certainly quality and they have the prices to match. I wouldn't turn down an offer to have drinks there but the Speakeasy is just a few blocks away. There's also the Hilton bar down State. So, don't go out of your way to have a night out there...at least not yet. read more

Superb Dinner - Two nights in a row! This is an extraordinary restaurant. We were blown away by the quality, imagination, presentation and flavor combinations. Wellington's would shine in NYC, L.A., DC, or any major city. I hope Albany realizes what they have - but I'm afraid they don't. This chef should move to our old hometown of Los Angeles...he/she would be a superstar...the food is that good. Bone Marrow - Beyond belief! Cheeseburger - Perfection! I love the ambiance and the food was good but honestly, the service was some of the worst service I have ever had in a restaurant at this price point. We were there for about 20-25 minutes before anyone even came over to ask us if we wanted drinks so I went and found the server. Our food took a ridiculously long time to come out. When we did receive our entrees, mine was the only one that wasn't delivered and it was served to me a solid 15 minutes after everyone else's and they had finished their meals by the time mine came. The server barely apologized. Our water glasses were empty most of the night and our appetizer plates sat on the table along with our dinner plates. The restaurant WAS NOT busy at all. When you are paying $500 for dinner, the expectation is that the service will be phenomenal and it was awful. We were there for 3 hours! I came here for dinner last night since a friend was staying at the newly renovated Renaissance Hotel (which by the way is beautiful!). The hotel and restaurant atmosphere was awesome. It definitely has more of a lounge vibe than restaurant. We sat near the window which had a picture perfect view of the Capitol building. Side note: The windows both in the hotel rooms and restaurant as not well insulated, therefore it gets a bit chilly. The chairs were cozy but the table was not an appropriate size to comfortably eat dinner. It was way too small to have a dinner for two. There is only one word to describe the service and it is AWKWARD. Our waitress was super awkward and not personable. I'm not sure if she was nervous, inexperienced, or not trained properly. Nonetheless, it was an awkward experience for all. The food was good. Not mouth-watering delicious, but decent. I definitely will be back for a casual drink or two. The dinner menu is overrated and with the small tables, makes for an unpleasant dining experience. I want to start by saying that the bar experience, including the bartenders, is absolutely SUPERB! They can make great drinks, make sure that your glass is always full, and are so friendly and warm. Great selection of spirits and fantastic cocktails as well. They deserve 7 out of 5 stars! This criticism and rating is solely focused on the kitchen and the food. In the past two weeks I have dined at Wellington's for lunch and dinner a few different times (mostly out of convenience), and have a variety of dishes. I had lunch twice, and stuck with the Caesar salad, with grilled shrimp - that was good as it was only a salad after all. Dinner however, mostly, was a totally different story: 1st time: I ordered the lamb, medium well done. What I received, however, was lamb that was rare ....and I mean still blue, type of RARE ..., so I sent it back. The way they solved this problem, is putting the chops back on the grill and bringing it up to well well done. So well done in fact that the char marks were solid black (and tasted every bit of charred), and the meat was so rubbery that a sharp steak knife was barely any match. I ended up sending it back altogether. To replace it, I ordered the steak filet. That steak was cooked to the "right" temperature, but was so flavorless, bland, and trashy. I didn't bother sending it back at this point, because I was beyond frustrated. 2nd time: I ordered a burger - very good. No complaints. 3rd time: I ordered the seared chicken to go. The order took about 40 minutes from order to delivery to come out. I understand that dish takes longer than the others to come out, but that was a great deal of time to wait. Nevertheless, I was starving, so i took my order and was off to return to the office. It was probably my mistake for not opening the container before I left, because what was in there was just a problem. Every item in that container was beyond charred - actually they were straight out burnt; the chicken was so dried out that a regular steak knife was no match, the Brussels sprouts were completely charred, the reduction sauce was burnt - which is a real accomplishment to do - and the potato pancake was solid black in color on both sides. I called and spoke to the Ass't Manager and was told the Rest. Manager would call me the next day - a call that never came. So I went in the next night to share the photos of the disastrous dinner from the previous night with the Bartenders with whom I had ordered. Of course, with the bar staff being very professional, they appropriately made up for the horrid experience.... I also ordered dinner one last time that night, ordering the mac n' cheese and the baked cod. While the mac was way too watery, it was still tasty (pork belly....yes please!), and the cod was cooked to absolute perfection (well worth the 49 minute wait). I will continue to sample the other dishes to see what works and what doesn't (since I live so close and it is the most convenient option), with the hope that the kitchen will speed up and figure out the major issues soon. read more

I also would like to add that the menu was very limited and didn't have many vegan options. The portion of salmon in the Caesar salad was laughable and overpriced. The kitchen was understaffed, and we waited over our drinks for nearly an hour for the soup. Not even a breadstick. The server avoided us, obviously in fear of awkward demands. Our water glasses ran dry. The same story with main courses. Dessert was delivered by the increasingly-irate kitchen staff, who realized mid- serve that we had ordered not two desserts, but one to share. We watched the ice cream melt until spoons were literally dropped on the table. This situation is not the fault of the staff. Management has cut every corner and it shows. We ordered steaks filet mignon, a strip, a duck, and the chicken. Finally entrees arrive after my friend asked where dinner was they finally came were cold and not cooked as ordered. Our girlfriends orders chicken and duck both cold over cooked dry. Amateur night! Our friends had inviteed us there who said they had a great experience a couple weeks before hand. We did not. I am quite sure they did. I'm not one to complain but it psst me off all the little things add up. I was ready to pay the bill for the four of us. My friend without me asking approached the manager who took off our girlfriends dinners. She should have wiped out the whole bill. No real apology other than we took it off. Absolute joke. What a disaster. I am not usually in the habit of leaving 1-star reviews, but my wife's and my experience last night requires it, particularly due to an incredible decision to plate a completely burned entree (see photos). It started promisingly enough. We were greeted by two servers, one a trainee and one a veteran. Both were fine. I chose the free-range chicken and my wife selected the homemade ricotta filled gnocchi with lobster. No salad was included and they did not so much as bring over a basket of bread. About 30 minutes of waiting led to the veteran server come over to ask if the trainee had mentioned to us that the free range chicken takes about a half hour to prepare. Ahh, no she had not. But what was done was done. A few minutes later our food arrived. The chicken was fine. But my wife's gnocchi was burned beyond recognition. I have no idea how any chef could have plated this meal, or how any server could have agreed to bring it to the table. But they did. Within a minute, before we could complain, the floor manager came to our table asking if everything was alright. We had not seen him at any other table so we assume he knew they were taking a big risk serving that dish. My wife pointed to her meal and asked if it was supposed to look that way. He conceded it looked "a little dark" and asked how it tasted. "It tastes burned," she said. He said he would go back to the kitchen to see what could be done and told her to eat around the burned stuff until he could return. (Other than the lobster on top, there was nothing worth touching. The gnocchi were like hockey pucks, and the sauce was congealed.) The manager came back and said the chef would pull someone else's order and bring it to her. My wife said never mind and please just credit the meal. She had lost her appetite. They agreed to do this, and even brought a replacement gnocchi dinner in a to-go box for us. We couldn't believe the difference in how it looked and tasted. (We shared it at home.) The fact that they served something that even the manager eventually conceded was burned and unappetizing makes you question the restaurant's respect for their customers. We go out to eat a lot in Albany, and rarely splurge for upscale dining. What a disappointment. I could not enjoy my own meal, of course, because my wife had no food, and the manager and servers were coming over constantly with proposals about what to do about the burned meal. The manager encouraged us to give them another chance, but did not offer a gift card or any other incentive that would make that an appealing proposition with so many other dining options in town serving better (at least not inedible) food for less money. We will not be back, and I do not recommend you risk wasting your money or time at Wellington's. read more

And then we were offered chips and dips after appetizers - which were good! It's as if we are in a bar that's trying to be a restaurant? Even the tables are low as if for cocktails but not for a meal. But the food was very good - good enough to warrant it being served on dining tables! Beat and burrata salad was good. First off, I waited 15 minutes before the waitress even came by my table. I had no idea the restaurant even offered specials because she did not share them with me. The only reason I knew about these specials was because I overheard a different waitress share this with her table of six. Frustrating!! After being served, she didn't check in. After collecting my plates, she didn't offer dessert. I'm not sure if dessert is actually offered nor has she brought me my check. I have been sitting here for 25 minutes after my table has been cleared and I haven't been asked if I want my check or dessert. Got the dessert and finally almost 2 hours later I'm leaving. The ambiance of this place is great, intimate and modern/hip. The bar makes the throwback drinks like at a speakeasy which is cool too. The food however, is hit or miss. I have been here a handful of times, and not once was the dining experience flawless, from full fat cuts of meat, to overcooked gnocchi. If it was cheaper, you'd be willing to let some things slide, but at the prices they are charging, you want your meal to be close to perfection. I was excited when this place first opened, was let down. Then I heard they got a new chef, so I thought I'd check it out, and again let down. So hopefully they get yet another chef and I'll give it one more shot before calling it a wrap on this place, at least for the food. The food was pretty good, but I was somewhat disappointed as my expectations were high after reading the creative menu. Our charred Brussels sprouts were very good, but did not reach the "better than everywhere else" level of Suzie's review. The endive salad was very artfully arranged but both of us that ordered it agreed it was just an OK flavor combination. The heirloom tomato & Burrata salad had very good flavor and was a winner, though we wished it had more greens and were surprised that the heirloom tomatoes were cherry sized. For Entrees the 4 of us ordered two each of two items, a rookie mistake that kept us from trying more things. The scallops were very large and nicely seared but everyone was somewhat disappointed by the perhaps overly creative potato risotto, it didn't add much. The Ricotta Gnocchi with chanterelles were just OK. They were not at all light and pillowy as the best Gnocchi are, and were actually pan seared which was very unusual. Our server was friendly but seemed very new to waiting tables. She didn't seem to recognize the name of the wine we ordered and asked twice more to clarify. She didn't seem familiar with opening and serving a bottle of wine, we had to ask for water multiple times during the meal, we had to ask for plates to share our appetizer, we asked 3 times for a wine chiller for our bottle of white wine. We saw friends later that night that ate at a table nearby and enjoyed the specials. Specials? What specials? For a restaurant of this level to have someone learning how to be a server on the job is a real head scratcher. Our other friends came the next morning for Sunday brunch and had a dreadful time with service. The staff was trying to figure out how to do everything on the fly and there didn't seem to be anyone there who was experienced at all. After their difficult brunch they asked to split the check and were told there wasn't anyone there that knew how to do that... I normally don't include hearsay - but it seemed to indicate that our server was not the only one and this is a consistent issue here. This pushed my review from 3 to two stars. The atmosphere is fantastic. Very classy and beautiful space. The Jazz music was unexpected and great. It was busy but not overcrowded at 8pm on a Friday, you could find seating areas in the bar although the dinner tables were all taken. There were a number of very well dressed men and women there, some of the women so well dressed we took them to be professionals. We all would go back, but for cocktails and maybe simpler food in the bar area. It is a great place before a show at the Egg with a very easy walk through the TU connector. read more

Took forever for a Waffle! There's something screwy here. Nice waitresses but in a largely empty dining room the food took forever to get to the table. The meal was ok. Just ok. read more
