Comfort grub in a retro diner exceeded my "expect-taste-in's!" Everything I like in discovering a new restaurant: First, Welcome Diner's (WD) web page says it is a farm to table eatery. Supporting small famers - a good thing! Second, WD lists their purveyors. Like it lots! I want to know the source of ingredients, which these purveyors are high quality. I wish all restaurants would post their sources on their web site. Third, the ambience! The space! Vibe! Conviviality! It is an inviting "mod-metro" cool place! Fourth, good responsive service! Fifth, the food on the plate looks tasty. And it tasted delish! I was craving the breaded deep fried chick breast served on a fresh biscuit with bacon, cheddar and chorizo country gravy - so so good! I used to come here when it was Chaffin's Diner and I was so pleased to not only see they honored the old layout but revamped it in a 50s inspired decor which made my heart sing! The powdered blue bar stools and benches were paired with chrome and blonde wood. I also loved that the menus' stay on the tables and it removes an air of pretentiousness this place could have. If for no other reason, you should come here for the decor alone. So many revamped places get gentrified and the charm and history bleached out to a horrifying blandness. Ugh. Anyway! Onto the food. I started with an Old Fashion which was $5 on happy hour. I always find this the best and quickest way to test a bartender's skills. I was not disappointed! It was actually one of the best I've had in Tucson. It was perfectly balanced and not too strong on the whiskey flavor or orange. My friend and I split the Cauliflower Poppers and Three Sisters Burrito. Both vegan! I was slightly annoyed that they came out at the same time, seeing how the poppers were an appetizer. I soon forgot my annoyance as I tasted the poppers first. Seriously, how is this vegan!? The batter was light, very crispy and the buffalo sauce a perfect blend of spices and vinegar. It was listed as vegan but I didn't know the ranch was too AND made in house. It was very good too. The Three Sisters Burrito was phenomenal. I was blown away again. It comes with tempura battered squash. It was again very flavorful, perfectly cook and it was a miracle I didn't eat the whole thing in one bite! Oh happy tears!! They truly understood vegan does not mean bland and I'm so thankful for that. They have other vegan options too! I cannot wait to come back. The food here is INCREDIBLE! I love the vibe, the healthy options, and the quality of the meals! I've come here the last two times that I've visited my family in Tucson. I absolutely LOVE everything about this place! It's located kind of on the edge of downtown off of Broadway. Its vibe is very cute and aesthetic. I love that it has such a retro diner feel to it and yet is also very modern and contemporary feeling inside as well. The service here has been quick and friendly each time I've come here so far and we never have to wait long at all to be seated. The waiters are all prompt and willing to give advice on dish selections. I also loved that there's a lot of plant-based options here, since some of my family members are vegan. I personally love getting their fried chicken and macaroni and cheese! The macaroni here is by far one of my favorites that I have ever tasted. It is SO rich, creamy, thick, and DELICIOUS! I'd go back to Tucson just for their macaroni if I could. In fact, my mouth is watering right now just thinking about it! They also have some great mimosa and wine options to accompany your meal with. A perfect way to top off a beautifully presented meal that was fresh and delicious! Wonderful experience. This food has soul. The nopales with tomato chutney and mac and cheese were outstanding, as was the lemon chess pie with blackberry sauce. Everything was home made, down to the ginger beer, and the ingredients well sourced. Apparently the chef was inspired by a recent trip to NOLA and incorporated some favorites into the menu, which makes it eclectic in a good way. The bumblebee chicken on a biscuit was moist and had a bit of sweetness from the honey and some zing from pickles. I wish there was just a bit more honey + mustard evenly distributed across the biscuit - it was just a bit dry. Salads, burgers and other sides (fries, brussels) were tasty, though the one I kept reaching for was the mac and cheese. One dish I wish I had sampled was the Three Sisters Burrito. If you've ever wondered what it would be like if a group of hipsters took over an old school diner, here is your answer. A group of us were watching a show at centennial hall so we came here for dinner beforehand. We were able to get a table right away. The service was friendly and quick. My wife got the googie cocktail and loved it. The decor is really fun and they even have a large room on the back for groups. For some reason they have a picture of a naked man near the bathrooms. There's probably a story to explain it all. I hope... We ordered the jambalaya, burger, short ribs and fried chicken biscuit drizzled with honey. The food was good, but at the higher price point I was hoping to be wowed a little bit more. My highlight was the lemon chess pie. I went here with a large group with dinner Friday night and the place was pretty empty. I heard its usually busy during the school year though. I love the decor but I was not impressed with most of the food. The music and service was good. The chicken & biscuit sandwich was really good. The chicken was very juicy and flavorful. The short rib chilaquiles was just ok, I didn't love the flavor. The three sisters burrito was just ok. I got a bite full of beans when I tried it so wasn't my fav. What a wonderful little find this was. A friend told us about it and we were so glad. The menu is full of fun twists on the average fare. We had an incredibly knowledgeable and quick server. She let us know everything is fresh and often made in House. Everyone was friendly. The vibe was fun, and the music was too... yet a bit too loud for conversation over the booth. My partner had a honey hibiscus lemonade that was very good. She ordered a Romaine grilled peach salad. It had ricotta and veggie on top. It was outstanding. I had grilled veggie in a Mexican sauce topped with eggs (how you want them). The flavors were simply scrumptious. It comes with hash browns or a side salad and corn tortillas. The tortillas are definitely homemade and my salad had a fresh lite dressing. We added a side of oven Roasted Brussels sprouts... Caramelized to perfection! When it came to desert, we were too full. So my partner ordered a peach brioche to take home. It did not disappoint. It was light with just a touch of sweet and had a thick layer of whipped cream frosting topped with grilled peaches. So I've given this place a few tries. Today was the last. Given the Uber hipster vibe, it's already a little full of itself. Setting the stage: Friday, 5 pm, some friends and I wanted some munchies before a show. Walk in (early) to let them know there would be 7-8 of us. An abrasive lady with "Pony" tattooed on her face told me that I be should be more considerate in the future and call ahead next time, at least 24 hours. Wow ok. I get it, someone isn't having a good day. Tells me I'll have to wait until entire party is present. Ok, fair ask but you don't have to be rude. We wait to be taken back to ours seats after one friend ducks out... just couldn't make it. We let them know it will just be the 7 of us. She doesn't even come to get us. Our friend goes to find out what's up given nothing has been relayed. Our friend waves us over. We go sit in the back to a table that was nicely set up, but it also smelled. Oh well. At this point we're just sitting around waiting for someone to acknowledge our presence. We let her know that we had a show and just wanted to put in drink orders and food. Well at this point she's being totally condescending and flip. My friend points it out and asks her why she's giving such horrible service. She indicates it's because we didn't know even call ahead. I've been wanting to update a few of my old reviews, so I thought I would start off with one of my favorite restaurants in all of Tucson, Welcome Diner! This place was and is still 5+ stars. I have never had a bad meal here - seriously! Whether it's breakfast, dinner, something in between or after, the food and drinks are quality and consistent. I continue to love their fried green tomato sandwich. I recently had their jackfruit "carnitas" torta which literally blew me away (Life Pro Trip: Save any leftover jackfruit and put it in a breakfast burrito. You can thank me later!). Their mac n cheese is bomb. The nopales fries (made with masa) are to die for. My favorite though? Breakfast. I'm pretty sure I come here once or twice a month for breakfast. It's a real treat! The coffee is delicious too. I love coming in and being greeted by friendly, familiar aces. My partner and I come in so often for breakfast that the morning-staff basically already know our orders (if you're reading this, we're the "french omelette w/ smoked salmon, sub hash browns for salad" couple!). For my 100th Review on Yelp, I waited for someplace that was really special. It was a serious tie between Welcome Diner and Cafe Poca Cosa, but I decided to make the later review #101. This was my second time at Welcome Diner and I loved it just as much as the first visit. Actually, the first time I went here, my car had been broken into at the Gem Show that day. My friends and I were exhausted and traumatized and the Welcome Diner experience took the edge off the whole stressful day. On my first visit, I had the jackfruit fries...much better than I expected. I'm actually not very adventurous with food and not a big fan of meat substitutes​, but the jackfruit was very good. This visit I had the No Way Jose Burger, which was delicious. It was a cross between a good fast food burger (like In and Out, not Burger King) and a gourmet burger. Sometimes the gourmet burgers (like ZinBurger) are so rich, they're like eating dessert. The No Way Jose Burger had good balance. The greens in the side salad we nice and fresh, no icky, over-ripe leaves which can be a problem. My friend got the Eggs Benedict which she said was really good. I should have tried the hollandaise sauce but didn't think of it. For dessert, we had a Lemon Lavender cookie and a chocolate chip cookie. Both were tasty, not bakery quality but good. The coffee was good. I'm a coffee snob so I was pleased I didn't have the immediate "yuck" response to a generic-tasting coffee. The building is classic Mid-Century Modern and there was a sign outside that said Pie with an arrow pointing to the door. To me, anytime you can go to a restaurant and it's an experience, even if it's not perfect, that's something. Both times I was here the service was good. I read some other reviews that said the service was spotty. The thing is, this is the antithesis of a corporate restaurant experience so of course, there's going to be some​ inconsistencies. That's the reason why you'd go here, because it's real and authentic. My friend that went with me has lived in Tucson for several years and didn't know about it. I'd highly recommend the Welcome Diner because it has that kind of cool factor that makes it memorable. And who doesn't love comfort food? read more

A friend told me about Welcome Diner, so I bookmarked it and tried it all in the same week and SO glad I did! When we pulled up, I immediately knew I was going to like this unpretentious gem of a restaurant... if only for the neon alone. The inside is amazing, with old school diner-esque turquoise seats and shiny wood tables. The place is big, open and airy that makes you feel like you have stepped back into the 50's. Our service was as amazing as the entire vibe of Welcome Diner, from start to finish. Now the food and drinks. They have a cocktail on special each night for $4. Old Fashioned was the cocktail this night, and I had TWO as they were perfectly mixed. We ordered a ton of food... Mac/Cheese with brussel sprouts appetizer; grilled cheese/fries & no way Jose Burger; of course dessert where we devoured some sort of banana pudding that was to die for. It's kind of expensive though, like I think the bumblebee sandwich that I had with the brussels sprouts came out to $16? That's a lot for a chicken sandwich. It was however phenomenal. I really dig this place for so many reasons. Let's start with the building. I absolutely love that they maintained the actual structure that was formerly Chaffins for so long. So, it still has that diner vibe but with a mid-century twist and it's awesome. They've respected the history of the former Chaffins diner and that's respectable. The service and hospitality makes this place stand out. It's always upbeat and Wayne is always there greeting people and really just making everyone feel welcome. It's just fun. And I wish more restaurants took this approach. Now the food: It's not your typical diner. It's more of a southern menu with some southwestern influence here and there. Fried chicken and biscuits made from scratch. My favorites are the fried green tomato sandwich and the Little Birdy. For breakfast the birote sandwich is where it's at. Let's start with the Positives: Very aesthetically pleasing, kind wait staff, large comfortable booths. At first glance, a hidden gem. But then, what you all came for... Negatives: Food & price points. Aka, the two most important qualities of any establishment. The price points on the breakfast menu stood out as high for anywhere, even more so for Tucson. And unfortunately, the food did not come up to anywhere near it's price tag. I had the chilaquiles. . . And let me start by saying that I LOVE sauce. No matter the sauce, dressing, or dip, I usually find myself adding more to every meal. In this case, I ended up literally scraping off the ridiculous amount of salsa and trying to save the rest of the ingredients from drowning. A friend ordered pancakes- and stopped eating halfway through because they were about 90% uncooked batter. Enough said. In short, your $$$ is better spent elsewhere. I am a huge fan of Welcome Diner in Phoenix and when I knew I was driving through Tucson I had to stop at their location to give them a try. I love the look and feel of Tucson's Welcome Diner, it was a Friday night around 8pm, so we did have a 15 minute wait, but honestly it went by fast. After we were seated and handed the menus the server disappeared, about 10 minutes someone came around to get our drink order, then after the drinks came it was another 15 minutes wait before our server showed up and took our order and apologized for the delay and explained there was a big group in the back, so he took our orders and away he went again. It was a good 35 to 40 minutes before our orders were brought out to us, again the huge party had to get their food, our server did bring us a side of fries for the wait and said he was sorry. Normally I wouldn't complain but I was getting hangry but any ways. Almost an hour to the time we arrived before we got our food. After checking out the menu I went with Short Rib Chilaquiles. It was tender short rib with corn tortilla chips tossed in an apple poblano salsa with horseradish crema, pico de gallo & cotija cheeses and poached eggs. Hot damn this was a great tasting dish! The apple poblano salsa is mind blowing, I am going to have to recreate that. It was the perfect amount of salsa to chips to short rib. So good, almost forgot about the long wait that just happened (aka no longer hangry). Welcome Diner does bang out some great dishes, and next time I will remember things just move a little slow. read more

Went here before a show at Congress. Nice retro exterior, very cool interior. Like something from the Jetsons. Unfortunately, something was burning in the kitchen and there was little-to-no ventilation so it was a bit overwhelming. I like that there is a long counter and all booths in the main dining area. Looks like outside seating is available too. The menu is kind of divey-diner but with a gussied-up twist on almost every dish. They offer a good number of hand-held dishes and plenty of vegetarian and vegan options (also was the special that night, a Mediterranean/middle eastern smorgasbord). But, you should also nail the meat dishes while you're at it, which is part of the reason why I deduct a star. I went with the Bumblebee chicken and biscuit sandwich and my date went with the short rib chilaquiles. The chicken on the biscuit sandwich was cooked nicely, the fried coating kind of fell apart, as did the whole sandwich, so it ends up being a "deconstructed knife and fork sandwich" unless you've got big hands and no shame. The honey also covers the bottom of the sandwich making it very sticky, but a nice savory/sweet combo. The chilaquiles were good but had a vinegary base to it that was strange. My date also ordered the strawberry shrub and soda ($5!) which had vinegar that might have contributed, but was overpowering. So, the menu is diner-chic and the prices match it. I was a little disappointed to get a handful of greens and some watermelon chunks as the side, when coleslaw is an extra $2.50 and fries are an extra $3.50 (yikes!). I like healthy options, but everything seems overpriced for what you get. Our server Isabella was super nice, friendly, and answered our questions. So there's no flaw in the service. The overall concept of a hip diner that charges a little too much for a little less than what you expect is what makes it tricky, especially if you're a college student closeby thinking you're going to a greasy spoon joint. The memory that I am left with most about this place was that the floor was so filthy that I almost fell down. There was some layer of film (grease?) that was all over the floors that made them slippery. You could visibly see people's footprints who had walked before. This is not really the kind of environment I want to eat in. In one word: GROSS. I went with a group for breakfast, and the food was nothing more than an below average diner experience. I had pancakes with a side of hashbrowns. My pancakes were on the side of being overcooked. That seemed to be the theme, though, as another person in our party also ordered hashbrowns that came super burned. He had to ask them to make new ones. An item that burned should not have even been brought out, but there was a distinct "do not care" attitude about this place. And don't be fooled veg friends - you could taste the bacon grease in the pancakes, likely from the griddle being shared. I mean, they don't clean the floor - why would they clean the food surfaces? The food is damn good. This is the second time I have the Bumblebee and the chicken is juicy and perfectly fried. The biscuit is so flaky that you don't want it to end. My husband ate the Koko and we had a lavender honey cold brew coffee. We got Mac and cheese for our son and we ate off his plate since it's so creamy and delicious. My complaint: it's not kid friendly other than having high chairs. There's no kid menu. I asked for a side of Mac and cheese for my son and I was told that they only have full-sized portions available (but then HOW can I sub out Mac and cheese instead of fresh salad on my sandwich order for $4??). Also, no kid cups (didn't even get a lid styrofoam cup offered for toddler) and no changing table in restrooms. Still, it's probably not targeting us parents with small kids, so it's prob not a big deal to many. Go for the food. Pricey for a diner, but delicious. read more

This not your father's diner and it is prices are a not cheap but it is well worth it for the quality product and stellar service. The first time I went with my son at his suggestion. I had the chicken plate. The chicken was well breaded, crispy and moist. For dessert had the Chocolate Souffle with marshmallow topping. Son and I split it. They have quite an assortment of alcohol. I had a local red wine blend. My first trip was so great I decided to try it again 3 days later. This time I sat at the counter and got Mac-N-Cheese and Chicken sandwich on a biscuit with honey and mustard. It was very tasty. Like the first time, I ordered the Chocolate Souffle. While the food was amazing, I think that their greatest asset is the staff. It was not like going into your standard restaurant. The staff is very friendly and informative. They work at providing a friendly atmosphere. They are very knowledgeable of the menu. Day trips mean first stop has to be brunch! We enjoy and frequently go to Welcome Diner in Phoenix, so we thought we would check out the new spot in Tucson. We arrived there around 10:15am at which time the wait was about 15 minutes. They actually have less tables than I had thought but overall, service was quite slow (the only drawback of our experience). After reviewing the menu, I went with the Roasted Vegetables (2 eggs over squash, peppers, & onions topped with ranchero & tomatillo salsas, cotija cheese, & cilantro). My husband went with the Biscuits Eggs Benedict (jackfruit under poached eggs topped with fresh hollandaise & chives). Overall, the food was flavorful, tasty, & filling. I'd venture to try something different next time .. maybe even the Benedict! Their jackfruit is prepared so well here. As previously mentioned, we really enjoy going to Welcome Diner. I visited this retro and vintage diner for late night dessert. All of the desserts sounded enticing but I couldn't decide so I asked the waitress what's the most popular. Her response, "it kind of depends on the night", didn't help so I shared the cherry pie and coconut and pistachio sorbet. Of the two, the cherry pie was my favorite because of the piecrust. It wasn't too light or flaky and was topped with just the right amount of sugar to counter the tart and sour cherry filling. Also, the chocolate covered cherries were a delight and I would order these alone. A turn off from my experience was a shirtless and dirty man who entered the diner. He approached the diner counter and stuck around for about 10 minutes before voluntarily leaving. Between this and the lack of a recommendation from the waitress, I am deducting two stars from my review. This place had some pretty good food and decent prices. I had the special chicken fried steak with chorizo gravy. My daughter order buttermilk pancakes and received one fried green tomatoes. Not sure where the mix up was, but no biggie. I will say I feel like they kind of nickel and dime you here. $3.50 for two small pieces of bacon it was a bit much. Same with a sausage patty. About the size a small tomatoe and that was also an extra $3.50. The topper was the $1.50 we had to pay for extra maple syrup, about the size of a small shot glass. Also for getting the order wrong and waiting another 10-15 mins for the proper order it would have been nice to at least offer a discount. Finally, the inside of this place is pretty cool. Walked through the door and the first thing the front cashier told me was that I couldn't bring my coffee in. Wasn't the welcome I was expecting but I digressed. We had a big group. They got us in quick which was nice. We all got our food at different times which is fine and expected in big groups but half of us were done eating before the other side of the table got their food. Really nice vibe, trendy diner place. The menu is not as overwhelming as a regular diner would have but what they do have gives you a refined version. The Chef's Special of the day which is the Scallop Watermelon Salad with Corn, Jalapeños, Pickled Onions drizzled with Balsamic Elderberry Sauce was good! Sauce really paired well with the watermelon and balanced the taste of the ocean. The portion is a bit on the small side but quality over quantity! I give this a 4-star instead of 5 because of the cook on the scallops--They were a tad overcooked but wasn't too dry to send them back. Another entree we tried is the Short Rib Chilaquiles! Sooooooo good! I love how the corn chips came with the apple poblano salsa already on them! The salsa was hot enough but wasn't too strong that you're mouth is left burnt. Not sure if you were supposed to crack the poached eggs over it but they were cooked perfectly! The only thing was that I wasn't a fan of the horseradish crema but that's more a personal choice than anything. Overall, a good dish! Both dishes were great and the staff are friendly and attentive to boot! The ambiance and the decor is relaxing, it kinda seems like you walked into a trendy 50's diner. Finally, we made it. My friend really wanted to check this place out for some time now. So today was the day! Upon walking in, the place give off a fun retro diner vibe. We were seated at a booth and quickly greeted by our waiter with menus. I was mistakenly given a dinner menu but on a good note, I noticed the diverse influence of Louisiana, Carolina, and Mexico dishes and other interesting dishes that I plan to try on future visits. Additionally, there were quite a few vegetarian options. I opted for the Roasted Vegetable breakfast with egg whites, flour tortillas instead of corn tortillas, and country potatoes. The salsa that came with dish gave it an amazing flavor and kick of spice! To my surprise, the also came with my favorite fruit, watermelon. I can't wait to return and try other dishes. read more

We went here specifically for the poutine because it was Canada Day and my husband was nostalgic for his Montreal days. The Diner was moderately busy for a Sunday night. We were greeted immediately as we arrived. The decor of the restaurant is reminiscent of the retro 50's-60's design with a central bar and multiple booths around the perimeter with neon lights around the restaurant. The food: The poutine was ok...the potatoes were thin and crispy but substantial. The cheese were slices of cheddar on top of the pile of potatoes instead of cheese curds. The chorizo gravy was quite good but overall the dish is not a traditional poutine and I'm a stickler for the traditional style. My main dish was the three sisters burrito which was totally vegetarian but actually delicious! It is also very large so unless you're very hungry, you can expect some leftovers. My husband got the koko chicken biscuit sandwich which was great! The chicken was crisp without being too bready and the biscuit was soft/crisp and falls apart inyour mouth. And they apparently have a good drink happy hour with half off drinks all night mondays! Would likely be back! read more

Great service and great food! As we were getting ready to say bye to the desert heat, as I like to otherwise call, Tucson, our tour guide, AKA cousin took us here for our last meal. I wasn't too hungry, so I decided to share some pulled pork fries for the table and a cup of cold brew coffee. The fries were delicious! The pulled pork was too die for and the slaw that they put on top of it worked so well together. The icing on the cake was the service of the restaurant. Our server was super attentive and made sure we were constantly taken care of. He even gave us a little history of the restaurant and talked about one of the customers who came into the restaurant in the 70s back when it was called something else. There is a framed picture of this specific customer by the restroom - it's definitely worth asking about! read more

I'm so excited to finally be able to review Welcome Diner. Before moving to San Diego, we used to live in Tucson and this diner was, by far, our favorite breakfast and brunch place. Everything is perfect here, service, staff, food, atmosphere, etc. They use local organic products which makes it very unique and special. We've tried the Three Sisters Burrito, the roasted veggie breakfast, the bumble bee chicken sandwich, the burgers, the chorizo birote, the grilled cheese sandwich, the French Omelet, etc. It's really hard to pick one favorite, but my top 2 are the 3 sisters burrito and the roasted veggies. The three sisters burrito is just a perfect mix of squash and been with a very delicious Chile de árbol sauce ( the sauce is very spicy so watch out for that), you wouldn't believe this is a vegan dish, so tasty and so filling. The roasted veggies are made to perfection with red and green sauce and a variety of veggies and 2 eggs on top, it comes with corn tortillas and hash brown, and the hash brown is hands down, the best hash brown I've ever tried. You can always taste the freshness of the potatoes and they use coconut oil to cook them so they are crispy and with a coconut taste, just the best. Their grilled cheese sandwich is also very very delicious, as I said, it's hard to pick just one delicious dish in this place. It is a little pricey but you get food quality and a very unique taste. The staff is very friendly and they make you feel welcome! I almost forgot to mention their coffee -best coffee in a breakfast place for sure! Just black coffee or adding a little bit of Stevia and some almond milk, it's just perfection. We recently were in Tucson visiting family and this was the first place we went to visit! Suggested by multiple friends and colleagues, one thing that mostly stood out in their comments was the three sisters burrito. One of them is vegetarian and she absolutely loved the flavor. Now that I have tried it, needless to say I do too. It has squash, beans and corn perfectly flavored with kind of a mashed up consistency, making each bite more soft and juicy. The burrito is humongous, that I had leftovers for the next day. The ranchero sauce was perfect, but wasn't enough for someone who literally drowns every bite of burrito in the sauce. This was a to-go order , but one of these days I'm certain to visit this place and sit-in and eat an infinite amount of ranchero with the burrito ! read more

Came here for dinner. The menu is slightly varied and off beat like the restaurant itself. On the menu you'll find sandwiches, burgers, poutine, breakfast for dinner among other things. I was surprised to find a couple of vegan options that weren't salad such as the jack fruit fries. They also have several beers, wine and cocktails to choose from as well as non alcoholic beverages. I had the jambalaya and my companion had the koko chicken sandwich. I truly enjoyed my jambalaya. It had a nice slightly spicy flavor. Served with two chunky slices of good bread. My SO enjoyed his sandwich. They have a selection of deserts. Today they had the regular options as well as a vegan pecan chocolate chip cookie and a lavender cookie. We enjoyed the chocolate chip pecan pie. It was very good and not over the top sweet with a hint of chocolate. Service was prompt and friendly. Moderately priced. read more
