Great job by Tom and crew. Had a problem with a broken pipe under the sink which developed into more leaks. They did as much as they could and then came back within 48 hours to fix the repair. We hired Welby Construction to do a complete master bathroom renovation. Ed and his team worked with us over some months to develop a plan and to acquire major components of the project. His team was responsive to our thoughts and tried to accommodate our desires into the project. We were able to benefit from his discounts in obtaining tile, fixtures, and equipment to create the style that we wanted in the bathroom. His team was knowledgeable in making recommendations to improve the project. The project basically stayed within the budget parameters that we agreed to in the design phase and he was willing to make modifications in the design as the project developed. His workers were careful in their work and cleaned up each day as they finished work. I've had Ed and his crew work on two separate projects at our house now, and I'm happy to give his business a 5-star review here. We have a 100-year-old Craftsman house, so we were very choosy in selecting a company to entrust with our home. From the very beginning, when he came to look over the house and draw up a bid, we were very impressed with Ed. He was very friendly and thorough, and the knowledge and experience he demonstrated gave us the confidence to know we didn't need any additional bids. With regard to bidding on a bathroom remodel, for example, he pointed out things that we had not thought of, and that no other contractor bidding on the job had mentioned. In the end, we put off the bathroom project, but hired Ed and his crew to retile our kitchen and half-bathroom. Part of the floor was uneven (old house), so it was a tricky job for them -- but we ended up with a level floor. The tile guys were professional and respectful of our home, and they did a fantastic job. Because of the amount of cement they had to layer under the tile to level it out, the cement didn't fully dry, so some of the grout flaked and chipped out after they were done. Ed was very responsive about correcting the issue, and immediately sent out his tile guy a couple of different times until it was perfect. When we needed some electrical upgrades and repairs, I called Ed back out, and he hired out his electrician to us. Again, the guy was professional and respectful, and did good work. We again had to have Ed send his guy back for a follow-up (a three-way switch was wired incorrectly), but like before, Ed was super responsive and had the guy out the next day to fix the issue. Some of this kind of work can get tricky in an old house like ours, so what matters is not getting it 100% perfect the first time (though that's always preferable), but rather the response in making it right afterward if a follow-up visit is needed. In that respect, Ed provided the best possible customer service. The only downside with Welby Construction is that their quality work makes them popular, so they might not be available right away for your project. But they're worth the wait! We'll be hiring them again when we get around to doing the bathroom remodel. We contracted Ed and Welby Construction to build a deck at our home. We encountered several issues during the construction that made it a very stressful project and ultimately I wish we had used another contractor. The project was completed several months ago and I am just now getting around to writing the review because it was so stressful that I couldn't bear to relive it by writing the review. My biggest gripe (of which there are many) was the way that the project was drawn out. When we signed the contract, Ed told us the project would take 3 weeks to complete. All in all, it took 10 weeks to complete with 8 of those weeks with workers at our home every day and the other two with them coming sporadically to fix what they called their finished work. They only had two workers on the job and they would come late, leave in the middle of the day to work on other projects, and leave for the day early. We had agreed on an 8-4 work schedule and some days I had no idea if they were coming or not. When I would inquire with Tom (who was supposed to oversee the work) he would act annoyed that I was even asking him. At 3 weeks, when it was clear that they were not going to be finishing on schedule, I inquired how much longer they thought it would take. Tom replied that "he couldn't predict the weather." They had missed one day due to inclement weather so the weather wasn't the issue with their failure to adhere to a schedule. Additionally, when we signed the contract with Welby Construction, Ed promised us that Tom would be there every day to be a point of contact for us and to oversee the work. He came twice a week at best and typically stayed for less than 15 minutes. The workers that were at our house every day were working beyond their capabilities and much of the work needed to be redone. It was frustrating because there was constant miscommunication between the workers, Tom & Ed, and ourselves about what things needed to be completed and how it was supposed to be done. We had to have multiple conversations multiple times and required us to be spending much more time and effort than we should have had to manage the project. Much of the work was done poorly. Overall, the construction of the deck itself was sound BUT many of the finishes were sloppy. Concrete was poured haphazardly, nails were sticking through door frames, stain was applied improperly. I could go on but it became tiresome to have to micromanage the workers because there was little pride in their work. Another huge problem for us was Ed's attitude. During the initial consultation, Ed seemed like a really nice guy and like a professional that took pride in his work. We made our expectations very clear and told him that we would pay on a milestone basis. If the work was not up to par, if would have to be redone before he would receive payment for the work. He said that he had no problem with that and even said in an email "If it's not good enough for my home, it's not good enough for yours." This was a huge factor in our decision to hire him over the other contractors who bid on the job but turned out to be a falsehood. After we had issues with the stain and door installation, he came to our home and demanded payment. He accused us of holding his money hostage and became rude and belligerent. My husband and I were shocked at how his demeanor changed and how unprofessional he was. He had promised the work would be done in two days and we agreed that we would pay the money owed in two days when the work was completed. We had paid for all the other work completed in a timely manner so we didn't understand why, after dragging this project on for weeks, he was in such a hurry to receive payment for incomplete work. I could go on but I think by now you get the idea. The whole project was fraught with problems from beginning to end. I'm quite shocked that they have such good reviews on Yelp. We have several other projects that we were hoping to be able to use them for, including a bathroom and kitchen remodel, but we would never in a million years consider hiring Ed and Welby Construction for further work in the future. read more

Although we have not begun our home project I am excited because of the ultimate success Ed helped create with the completion of my business build out. Ed not only helped finish and complete our business construction within our vision he went through the hassle of cleaning up the mess that our original contractor created. His team was professional, efficient, and above all experts at what they do. This was the complete opposite of what we had to deal with for over two months. I'm giving Welby 2 stars instead of 1 because Ed was a very nice guy and spent ample time giving us a quote. We had to leave our rental house and get into our new house in 30 days and we emphasized how important it was for the project to be done on time. He assured us the the work would be completed a week before the deadline. Based on that and his apparent competence, we hired him and he agreed to work with us. Unfortunately, the day before he was to begin our extensive remodeling project, he backed out without a proper explanation, leaving us in a nightmare situation. And now, we had to shop for another contractor and deal with a flood of practical logistical issues that I won't go into. This is not a professional way to run a business and it created such unnecessary hassle for us. This hassle -and this review- was easily avoidable if he had just communicated earlier that he wasn't interested in working with us. I waited several months to write. I didn't want this to be a hasty angry review. But I think it's important for Ed to realize the impact his decisions have on people's lives and I hope this helps him in the long run. read more

I did not hear back from him, and I emailed several times to follow up and never received a response. We hired Welby Construction to get rid of a load bearing wall and add a beam and also to fix our foundation. Ed came out to meet with us first to look at the load bearing wall and give us a quote. He was helpful and knowledgeable and we hired them. We signed a contract that stated all the work was supposed to be done the week of May 21st. I gave them the first half of the money, they came to do our load bearing wall project that week and it was completed. Then things started going wrong. I didn't hear from them. All contact was lost. I reached out to them multiple times by phone, email, and texting, which Ed replied to previously but not this time. Finally, I asked when they were coming back to do the foundation and I got a response saying they would be there the 31st. No one came to the house at all that day. I tried reaching out to them again, no answer. The next week they finally responded and said someone would be there June 6th. AGAIN, no one came to our house at all. Later that week, a truck showed up but we had no clue anyone was supposed to come that day. The only reason we knew someone was even there was because we have a Ring doorbell and the camera caught the truck parked in our front yard. Then, no one told me anything for two weeks until I received an email stating that I hadn't reached out to them and asking for the second half of the payment. This made me livid as I had tried to contact them multiple times and sent them a long email complaining about their communication, customer service, and timeliness. When I told them I had no clue the foundation work was even done, he responded, "sorry about that, work is completed." Because of their horrible communication, I couldn't even trust their quality of work and had someone inspect our foundation. He told us that they failed to put metal plates where they were supposed to be and where things were supposed to be nailed in, there was only one nail. This is just lazy work. I emailed them again to have the work completed. Again, I received no answer or call back. Then as I was leaving for work one day, someone showed up to my house that I had never met before and had no clue would be coming. I asked who he was and he said, "I'm working here today," Again, I asked who he was and he told me he worked for Tom, who I also had never met and didn't even know he was the supervisor for these projects. The work was finally completed and they asked for the money again. I cannot stress how hard it was for me to write that second check. Even if they did good work, I will not trust them to do another project for our house and I do not think that someone should have to pay the price originally quoted if their communication and customer service was that bad. They did not complete the project on time. It was supposed to be done before we moved in and it took them an extra month do complete it! The contract said the second half should be paid upon satisfaction of the work, and I should have fought it stating that I was not satisfied, but the only reason I didn't is because the work is finally completed and I don't think they would respond to me anyway. I would have given them two stars for the work they actually did, but I am so angry about the whole experience, I had to give them one. read more

He actually went above and beyond what you'd expect. His professionalism had us convinced to hire his crew even if it cost a little more. He told us he'd email an estimate but it never happened. We hired Welby for a second story addition from December 2013 to July 2014. We hired our own architect who helped create a design and had 4 contractors give us bids. Ed Welby was by far the most helpful of the contractors to us at the bidding stage, asking good questions, solving problems, and proposing changes that would really help the project meet our needs or save us money. We lived in the front part of our house while they added the second floor over the back part. When changes came up (termite damage, replacing old aluminum wiring, removing more stucco) Welby was fair in their pricing. When it came to our weekly update meetings with our Superintendent (Tom), I found myself having to do a lot of the tracking of issues we identified and trying to understand what was coming next and what decisions were going to be needed soon. Be prepared to be your own quality inspector. Welby works with many subcontractors, many of whom were excellent to my eye (Framers, Jorge the tile guy, Granite counter guys, Terry the trim carpenter) but many of the subs rush through the work and quality suffers (Insulation, HVAC, Drywall/Texture). No one cares about your project as much as you do, so be your own inspector. Look around, point issues out, and keep a list to be sure things get fixed before they move on. Welby will tell you they didn't bid the job with full-time oversight of subs, but I was underwhelmed with their attention to detail. I found nails in the street, holes in some new ducts, drywall installed without insulation behind it, and a long dragged out month and a half of sub-par drywall texturing and painting before they finally hired a quality guy to finish the painting. If any fixtures are coming out at the beginning of the project and going back in at the end, I suggest you personally take care of removing and storing them. We planned to re-use a ceiling fan, a whole-house fan, and some laminate flooring, but they were mishandled during construction so the ceiling fan was trash, the whole house fan rattles, and we ran short on flooring. In the end, we love our new space, and though it took a year to get past the trauma of the remodel, I'm sure we made the right choice picking Welby for our project. I always knew they would take care of us, it just took a lot more personal involvement than I thought it would. read more

On time, professional, executed what they said they would do at the price they quoted, and just all around nice people. Overall, they did a very good job. It took some return visits to get everything wrapped up, but they did come back and make everything right. The friend-referral thing didn't work out very well so I turned to Yelp's user reviews for help. And low and behold, I couldn't be happier! Ed and his team are great. After speaking with him on the phone he came over to my place the very next day. He helped articulate my thoughts into tactics once I gave him the download on what I was trying to accomplish. Throughout the conversation and the entire experience his crew was always polite and professional. They did great work running HDMI and speaker wire through the wall (while patching and texturing everything) and measured and mounted the TV just in time for Super Bowl festivities. Solid people! Welby helped us renovate a very old home that I inherited. The guy we interviewed before Welby told us that we should consider tearing down the home to build new. Ed explained to us that unlike most Architects, his team prefers to work with the structure we had and go from there. He essentially rebuilt the whole house but his logic ended up saving us thousands of dollars. The way he explained it was that the framing and foundation was in good shape and there was no need to re-invent the wheel. I assume to do other projects. I have sent numerous emails, left voicemails on the owner's cell phone, left messages with the office staff, and even sent text messages. Ed and his crew remodeled the interior of our house May of last year. This included new floors, a new bathroom, a new kitchen, light fixtures, appliance hookup, new windows, new interior paint, asbestos removal and scraping of the ceiling. The outcome of our project was fantastic and it still looks as excellent as it did a year and a half ago. I'd like to point out that I've never seen any construction process go perfectly. Especially a more intensive remodel like ours! There were some miscommunications and delays towards the end of the project, which did take us past our anticipated completion date. However, Ed handled this situation as professionally as possible. He took responsibility for his/his crew's errors, and took care of them out of his pocket...not ours. Here's the thing with Ed (the owner): if you can get him to contact you, his team does good work. My husband and I hired WCM about two years ago for renovations in our condo - we are pleased with the work. The guys were great, the quality is good, and they were finished quickly... all of which I expect for the slightly-inflated price tag. Now, two years later, we contacted Ed again. After calling his office mulitple times we finally set up a time for him to come by the house. Ed and one of his team members came by, talked to us about the renovations we were looking at, took measurements, etc., and said he'd get back to us with an estimate. That was a MONTH ago. In the meantime, I have emailed him several times, called, and my husband even went by his office. No response. Not even so much as a "Hey, sorry, we're really busy and we'll get back to you." Nothing. Ed didn't even come out of his office and into the lobby when my husband dropped by - just had his secretary give my husband the blow-off. FYI, this is not how you create repeat customers whose gratuitous word-of-mouth advertising you value. read more

I work overseas and was not present when Welby installed the new roof. From my understanding he used subcontractors and now we are going to have to get the roof replaced as they never noticed that the roof beams were suffering from dry rot and termite damage. We have an estimate from another company to replace the wood and have to install a new roof. I would have thought that they would notice the wood was dry rot and termite damaged when putting on the new roof, but I guess that is asking too much. Hopefully it can get done right this time. I used Welby based on the Yelp ratings, but now I will get more estimates and do better research using Angie's List. read more

We just hired Welby Construction to remove a load bearing wall separating the kitchen and living room, and do some other renovation work on the home we just purchased. We were extremely happy with the whole process. The staff in the office and workers onsite were all very nice, professional, and helpful. Most importantly, they worked with us to get the job done on budget and on time! From the first meeting, to completing the job was less than a week. I think only like 3 or 4 days. It was so quick! Ed came out to look at our house because we wanted to add about 600 square foot addition. We wanted to add two bathrooms, a bedroom, and a small living space in the back for my retired Godfather. When he came out, Ed and Jesse, his associate, were friendly and answered all our questions in a professional manner. We asked them to give us an estimate for our project and Ed said he will have some numbers for us in about a week. After two weeks of not hearing from them at all, I emailed and called them. No response from Ed or anyone at his company. I understand if our project might not be suitable for them to take on. However, I would, at least, like some communication from them telling us our project is not suited for them. To not have ANY communication at all after they came out is completely unacceptable and poor follow through. read more

I usually hate working with contractors because they either try to rip me off or treat me like I'm an idiot because I'm a woman. Welby construction has been the opposite experience. They did a FANTASTIC job with my remodel and came in on time and within budget. They removed a load bearing wall and replaced it with a support beam in the ceiling, installed 20 recessed lights, refinished the ceilings after popcorn removal, and installed new flooring throughout the house. I am thrilled with the result, and since there were no surprises I was able to have them replace my bathtub and resurface the walls in my guest bath while they were still on site. Top notch company, Ed, Bob, Christie and their team did an awesome job scheduling and remodeling my master bathroom. Wanted to have a load-bearing wall taken out (as much as possible) in my bottom floor garage. After researching Welby I decided to give them a shot in this risky job. They were able to start the job quickly and Terry was absolutely wonderfully to work with as he showed up promptly at 7:30AM every morning to start the day.
