Do you remember the movie Forrest Gump where Forrest and his friend Bubba were talking about shrimp? Bubba talked or five minutes about the various ways to cook shrimp. Well...Weikel's has about the same number of fruit kolaches. After visiting the extremely clean restrooms, I went over to the kolache counter and looked at the long list of kolache types. I ordered a cream cheese and peach kolache, but it was a Sunday afternoon, and they were out. I did get a regular peach kolache, and it was delicious. The bread was light and sweet...perfect snack. Weikel'a also has tasty cookies. Expect the same products for sale as Buc-ees...Texas preserves, nuts, jerky, candy, etc. We grabbed a package of sausage and cheese kolaches from a display rack and took them home to eat the next morning. They were still fresh and delicious the next day. My wife prefers nearby Hruska's in nearby Ellinger, but I like Weikel's. Although I am a Buc-ees fan, it is nice to see a worthy alternative in LaGrange. I can't wait to go back to try a different kolache. read more

Huge selection of kolaches, cookies, cakes, everything you expect from a Czech bakery. We got apple kolaches but I'm going back tomorrow to try the Honey Bees. I had the good fortune of passing through LG again yesterday so I of course stopped in for a jalapeno and cheese sausage kolache. On the way back through a few hours later I ordered my favorite sandwhich and picked up some Honey Bees. Stopping at Bon Ton during a road trip makes any road trip a great road trip. I am told the new location will be open the first of the new year. It's huge and will make the stop even more convenient. I am sure with the new and larger building that production will increase as well. Great for everyone without that "sold out" feeling. read more

Weikels' bread is quite good. Each time we shuttle between Austin and Houston, we call ahead and ask them to hold a couple of loaves of wheat bread, thin sliced. It's always worth the stop. They do run out some weekends so do call ahead. read more

Better than a place in Schulenburg that runs out too early anyway. And better than a place in Katy. Best kolaches, hands down. And wide variety of flavors, not just the popular ones. Stopped here for the first time and have been to several kolache bakery's in and around Austin/Dallas/Houston areas. I did not find the pastry selection as great and they just did not hit the mark for me regarding flavor and doughy loveliness I expect from a good pastry. On top of it the lady at the counter who served me was rather rude. I tried asking about what the pastry's fillings were exactly and her answers were cryptic and came off rude. Not a place I would stop at again just for that reason alone and the selection. No apricot or lemon filled WITH cream cheese? Every other place offers that combo. There is another bakery on the 71 called Hruska's and it is amazing. The employee's were very nice as well. I believe it is near Ellinger, TX on Hwy 71. Then the one south of Dallas is also like Hruska's and is great too but I cannot remember the name of it! read more

I used to travel to Houston quite a bit a few years back and just had to stop at Weikel's on the way there or back. If you want fresh backed cinnamon rolls, Kolaches, breads or even meats and cheeses, it's right here. They have very clean restrooms, friendly employees, amazing baked goods and everything else a convenience store could have. I drove out to Weikel's on Veterans Days last week with my Veteran Father and my Mom. They enjoyed the drive and purchasing goodies. As did I. Stop in and see the good people here. Love this place, but they run our of cream cheese kolaches way too early. Why can't they make twice as much? I'm there often enough to know they always run out. I know I don't buy as much stuff when they're out, and almost every person I listen to when they order asks for the same thing - cream cheese koaches. MAKE MORE! I'm not a big fan of any of their meat kolaches. I really prefer when kolache meat is chopped; they go with whole slices which can often be chewey and cause you to pull out all the meat in one bite. Besides that, they leave a weird aftertaste in your mouth. Their white bread is really good, but it's not nearly as good as the bread you used to get at the Bon Ton. Unfortunately the Bon Ton's long gone, so Weikel's is about the best alternative in La Grange. Their cakes and cookies are good too. They sell many varieties of jerky, most of which are really good. I like Weikel's, I just think most of the reviewers are over-estimating how good their kolahces are. The cream cheese ones are darned good, but they always run out of them and they're really the only ones that are worth a darn in my opinion. No kolache will ever taste the same after getting one here. My favorite kolache place has always been Hruska's. I always make sure to stop when passing by. However, it has all changed ever since I tried a kolache from Weikel's. For those who have been to Hruska's, Weikel's is quite similar but on a smaller scale. You can pick up all sorts of things you would at Hurska's but they do have more food options. I noticed that they make sandwiches but the main thing here are still the kolaches. I have tried the sausage with jalapeno & cheddar and the cream cheese. The sausage one was very good with the right amount of sausage and cheddar inside. The cream cheese was exceptionally good, they didn't skimp out on the cream cheese. I think the main factor that separates these kolaches from others is the bread. The bread has this little sweetness that compliments the kolache. It balanced out the saltiness of the sausage and it just made the cream cheese taste even better! The bread really reminded me of those Hawaiian rolls you get at the grocery store. The best way to summarize these kolaches is that they're just pure goodness. If you're a fan of Hurska's, give this place a try. I'm sure you'll become an instant fan of Weikel's. read more

I frequently travel from Austin to Houston via Hwy 71 because of work and, whenever I have the time, I always try to make a stop at Weikel's (or The Bon Ton Bakery) on the way down. Like many other Czech gas-station bakeries throughout Texas (like Czech Stop in West and Hruska's a few miles south in Ellinger), Weikel's is famous kolaches. However, there are a couple of other items worth buying if you're in the bakery and don't want a kolache or feel like trying something a bit different. 1) The homemade bread is fantastic--particularly the wheat bread. Like many other items at Weikel's, this item frequently sells out by late afternoon, but if you're there and it's available, be sure and buy a couple of loaves. It has a nice yeast-y, homemade flavor and is excellent on its own, toasted, or in sandwiches. 2) The honeybees. It's Weikel's version of the sticky bun and is typically sold in packages of 6-8. Each "bee" is about 4"x4" in size and coated with a molasses-type syrup and then topped with nuts. If you're on a diet, well, it might be worth taking a break for one these things. Weikel's is slightly harder to get to than Hruska's (which is also on Hwy 71 and sells kolaches), but trust me when I say it's well worth the extra time. read more

These kolaches are the best. They are better than the ones found at Hruska's down the road in the speed trap town of Ellinger. They make a fine sandwich too...in case you want something savory. Hruska's has the burger, Weikel's doesn't have burgers but they do win out overall with the softest sweetest heavenly sausage rolls. I usually get apricot or peach and the cream cheese kolache too...which are crack laced. The carrot cake is moist and marvelous. Chocolate cake great. My mom and dad always appreciate it when I pick up an extra 6 pack of sausage kolaches when I am goin' that way...they do freeze well. read more

I've been going to Weikel's since my sister started school at UT (2002) and it's changed a lot since then! Best kolaches ever (sausage/jalapeno/cheese) - and FYI the cheese and jalapenos are INSIDE the sausage so you didn't get ripped off, just take a bite to see the goods. I can eat 6 of these in one sitting. My mom is obsessed with getting loaves of bread from here because they're baked fresh every day and they are huge. It's always a tough decision between stopping at Weikel's or Hruska's on the way to/from Austin on 71, but I think Weikel's wins my vote even though you have to get off the highway to get to it. So first of all, it's just ludicrous that Central Texas is the only place on the planet where you can find kolaches. People in other states haven't even heard of them. Those poor, poor people. I find myself driving through LaGrange frequently for work and between Austin (home) and Houston (parents' home). In this unlikely place, there exists a bakery--an institution--called Weikel's. For the longest time, this bakery had the appearance of an old gas station convenience store, which was fine. It kinda added some soul to the place. In any case, I hadn't been for a few months, and I dropped in today to find a completely new, very large building that resembles a Buc-ee's inside and out. However, the only part I care about is the bakery counter. Weikel's has got, hands down, the best kolaches in Central Texas. The bread is extra doughy with a hint of sweetness, and the fillings are all delicious. My favorite: sausage, jalapeno, and cheese. Yumm! Buy a couple for the road, or buy a package of them to take home. They freeze and reheat really well. Also, Weikel's does great sandwiches for lunch, and their handmade dried noodles are great for soups! There's still some construction going on, but it looks like it'll be completely done soon. Highway 71 is the better route from Austin to Houston only if you're not going to/coming from the north side of Houston, and whenever I had the chance, I'd go this way. I used to love getting the ones with the central Texas jalapeno sausage and cheese (which are technically not called kolaches, but are a different Czech name). They can be a tad salty though. Just be careful because there are more 5-0 going this way! With 290, all you have to be careful about is Brenham :). read more

I live in Houston and a client brought in cherry shortbread bars during Christmas season. I don't like anything with fruit, but when I was offered to taste a small bit of these bar I was HOOKED. I placed an order a few days ago for the cherry shortbread and pecan bars to be shipped to me and nearly ate my fingers off eating one of each. Let me first say the packaging was perfectly sealed upon arrival. Mine were delivered via two day UPS and taste just as fresh as if I had walked in the store and picked them up. The bars are thick and well worth the $10 price. I started eating the cherry shortbread first having been familiar with how good it was. As I was becoming "full" I just had to push myself to try the pecan pie bars and MAN it was so good. Needless to say I had a tummy ache by morning but it was well worth it. I recommend that even if you don't live near this place, definitely consider placing mail orders you won't regret it. They have a variety of other options that I can't wait to try in the future. read more

I found heaven... it's in the middle of No Where, TX. I can't even think of where to begin in this review, my mouth is watering and my hands want to reach for the keys and drive very fast now!!! Stopped here kinda by accident- a little hungry and needed a bathroom real bad! I found the bathroom, along with the best pastries, and kolaches in No Where, TX. I couldn't resist trying several different treats. The cinnamon rolls were as big as my face, the pastry was fluffy, and coated with the perfect combination of sugar and cinnamon. The kolaches both meat and fruit were worthy of a 10 star rating. I purchased a few extra to give to my family, but oops... they ended up not making it the rest of the way. I couldn't resist eating the whole half dozen! Now anytime my family drives up from SETexas they know where to stop and grab a present for their favorite Aunt in Austin! read more

Today we stopped late afternoon and I worried they would be sold out of my favorite cream cheese kolaches... I found 2 in a mixed pre-packaged 6 pack. The lady behind the bakery counter offered them to me so I could just by those two cream cheese kolaches! Yahoo she made me very happy! I bought a package of kolaches and a package of their cinnamon rolls for my guys at work to enjoy tomorrow too. I'm embarrassed to say my two didn't last long as I ate them as soon as I got back to the car! Yes they are that good, soft delicious sweet kolaches with a delicious cream cheese in center! My family and I have been coming here since late last year and each time we have had a good experience, so we couldn't personally understand why people are saying the bakery staff is rude. But then again, we've always been nice and they've treated us nice in return. We both discussed it and maybe thought that they may have seemed rude because they are always so busy and filling so many orders for so many. Also, maybe because they don't have a whole lot of workers behind the counter. But, our orders are as we've asked and everything is always very tasty and delicious. It's always a treat to come to Weikel's! We love the fruit kolaches, the sausage kolaches, banana loaves, homemade bread and daughter loves the cookies. Weikel's was a surprise for me. I was making time early Sunday morning, and I calculated that at the rate I was beating my GPS's estimated time, I had about 7 minutes to get some breakfast. I saw a billboard for Weikel's and was uncertain... is it close enough to the highway? I don't have time to drive off even a little ways, I need something right on the way. Fortunately, when the exit came I could see the place from 71. I quickly zipped off, hurried in, and went straight to the bakery section of the gas station/convenience store. Now ... when I go to a place that sells tofu, I'm kind of lost. I don't know the lingo, the terms... I know "tofu" and not much more. I do not have this problem when I go to a place that sells kolaches. Jalapeño. Sausage. Cheese. This is "my kolache." I ordered with certainty and authority. I got a half-dozen. Fresh from the oven where they steamed up the bag. It was large-ish palm-sized kolache with the peppers in the sausage. Good bread, good sausage and very fresh. Between breakfast and an after-lunch snack, I killed the whole bag. Defnintely planning on stopping there again next time I'm on my way to Columbus in the morning. read more

Remember when tis place was BONTONS!!! Man, this place is amazing. There are 2 places we stop NO MATTER WHAT, when we are traveling on 71 or to Dallas, and Weikels is one of them. Hands down, a must. We get the Honey Bees, Cheese Kolaches (which imo are to die for) and the Cinnamon Rolls (even though I do not like rasins!) DAMN good stuff! Pricey, a bit. Each of the above is about $8 a pack, and you get 6 per pack. But they are well worth it. OH-- and I concur with Keely! The bathrooms ARE nice! LOL Tile from floor to ceiling, so you have your own stall, AND they have DYSON hand dryers. Wassup!!!!! LOL Nice, big and clean. You can trust your kids to touch a wall if they had to. read more
