Great Chinese take out in a strip mall. They have few tables where you can eat.

Since I'm relatively new to the area, I'm still on the hunt for a reliable Chinese takeout place…read more Hunan Wok was one of several candidates in our regular commuting radius, so we decided to give it a go this week. The restaurant shows clear signs of aging, with yellowed printout signs and a somewhat grimy eating space. There are a few tables and chairs for those who might opt to dine in, but bear in mind there are warnings against loud noise and boisterous conversations inside the restaurant. Service - both on the phone and at the counter - was brisk and neutral as far as friendliness goes, but I don't need a Chinese takeout order to be warm and chatty. I have my therapist for that. When it comes to food, I need it to be good. And fast. To that end, orders are prepared with punctuality. After I placed my order on the phone, I was told my food would be ready in fifteen minutes. I often like to see how accurate these estimates are, so I glanced down at my watch when my bag of food was in hand, and was surprised to find that it'd been exactly fifteen minutes. As far as our meal went, it was just okay. My usual order of beef and broccoli was definitely on the greasy side, and some of the meat was on the tougher side. Taste-wise, it was spot on. My husband seemed to like his barbecued spare ribs, but there were more large pieces of hanging fat on it than I would've liked. The value point also seemed off, since a ten dollar plus serving came in a small pint-sized container (at that, not quite filled to the brim) Would I return? If I was in the immediate area and desperate for an immediate meal, I might come back. But there are a few others in the area I've tried that have hit closer to the target of my taste buds.

    Rahongbu Malatang - Dry pot

Went to Rahongbu Malatang for some dry pot on a weeknight for dinner. It's in the same restaurant…read moreas Hong Chun Cheon, which serves dakgalbi. The dry pot here is similar to others, where you serve yourself from a raw bar, the ingredients are weighed, and they cook it for you to the spice level of your liking. I don't like that noodles are charged separately from the weight of the other ingredients (vegetables, fish cakes, meat, etc.) Because of this, i almost opted to order one of the dakgalbi dishes on the menu for Hong Chun Cheon. However, the prices listed on the menu are for one serving. When i tried to order, the lady at the counter explained I had to order two order minimum. So the real price for one order of cheese dakgalbi is $51.90, not $25.95. This was annoying because I was the only person who wanted dakgalbi, which mean i ended up not getting it. I did get my dry pot though. They make it spicy just like everyone else. At about $16 per pound with separate charges for noodles, it's slightly more expensive than other dry pot restaurants in the area. I eventually wanna come back for the dakgalbi, but I'm gonna need to make sure i have a partner beforehand.

Upon getting a table, you can order either the mala options or the chicken bbq (닭갈비) options. If…read moreyou're getting mala, you can self-serve any ingredients you'd like - malatang was cheaper ($14.95/lb) than the dry pot version ($16.95/lb). There aren't too many options but still ample to make a delicious mala dish. I got the Malatang with the Medium level which was the best for me, although I was sniffling a bit towards the end. I think Mild is also a great option, as it was still flavorful with a slight heat. We had a bit of a wait on Friday night as expected but luckily, upon being seated it's just a matter of waiting for the kitchen to prepare your dish. They offered us complimentary sweet potato tempura on the house which helped curb our hunger in the meantime. There are only three people working front of house so please be patient!

The dining room was empty when we rocked up on a weekday late afternoon, and it was nice to sit at a table by the window for a street view. The staff was quick and efficient, and we got a super heavy tea pot of hot barley tea in no time. Food came out without delay. I love how theirs comes with loads of veggies, even as I question the use of green beans which is a first for me (to see them in sweet and sour pork). And while it was distracting and would rather have the dish without the beans, the star of the fish, the pork, was just right and we gobbled it up. I hope they stay open for a long time.

The noodle sauce is very heavy (I liked it), and the noodle texture is perfect. The portion of sweet & sour pork is small (I usually get 3-4 people portion, but this one is good for 2 people). They do have private parking lot. - Noodle with special black bean sauce (4/5): very heavy and deep sauce - Noodle with spicy black bean sauce (4/5): light sauce & moderate spicy - Sweet & sour pork (3/5): small portion, and average taste
