Calm down, people. It's not all that. The Good: The store really excels in its fresh-food departments. The quality of produce, bakery, meat and deli items is very high. The So-So: The store's Market Cafe food-court is overpriced. The BBQ was okay -- not great -- just okay. Same for the Chinese and Indian. The pizza was disappointing. The Bad: The store's grocery department has a very limited selection. Many of the common name-brand products you'll find at typical supermarkets cannot be found here. What you'll find instead are Wegman's-brand products. I noticed this in nearly every aisle of the store. Also, I have found some store employees to be down-right rude. During one visit, I was ignored at the bakery counter, and, on another occasion, nearly shoulder checked by a clerk who apparently thought I was in his way. I nearly reported him to the manager. We love this store! The prices are competitive and the selection of high quality goods is outstanding. The sandwich shop is very very good! I get Dave's favorite which is an Italian sandwich (Genoa Salami, Capicola and spicy ham). The salad bar and hot food bar are of very high quality. I cannot rave enough about the produce. We have shopped at any other grocers in town the quality of Wegmans produce cannot he beat. As for the customer service we have not had a bad experience. This is the Mecca of all Stores and Foodie places combined. Where can you walk into the door and not leave until 2 hours have passed? No place but here or your fave bar/movie. But here you will find everything from one of a kind foods to a huge selection of food to chow down on. Yes, folks this is a grocery store but it is the store to beat all others. If you have a recipe that calls for an unusual ingredient, then this is the place you are most likely to find it at. Also the fact that you can get a full meal with drink for under $10 is banging great. There is also a restaurant in the food area across the way from the killer NY Style Pizza's (yes multiple kinds and huge slices and a meal deal two slices and drink for, yes you guessed it $6) that has a nice selection and prices are very reasonable. Ok one drawback is the fact that you cannot get Beer or Wine there. But who cares as long as you can get it at the local liquor store. If you have not been to Wegmans you got to go. I like this Wegmans because it is location is prime for people who live in the community and the parking is sufficient for customers to be able to make quick stops in and out. Wegmans is a great grocery store! Be careful going if you are hungry, you will end up buying the entire store! This wegmans is always well stocked and staffed and exceptionally clean. It does get very crowded and busy on weekends and week nights after people get off work, so if you can its best to avoid those times. The Japanese grocery section is still well stocked for my needs, they also added more great veggies and for a bonus, they started offering different flavor mochy in the sushi section! Poor customer service! Not what I expect from this facility. Poor interaction with Aaron, the manager, as well. I got to the sandwich shop 15-20 minutes before closing and was turned away. I arrived at 8:43 and the sign on the wall behind the sandwich lady said they were open until 9. The sandwich lady indicated they had a slow flow and closed early (with an attitude like I was being a bother to her), but there was no signage indicating an early closure. Sooooo, if business is slow and you have customers arrive prior to scheduled closing time, shouldn't you take that money??? I run a dealership service facility that's open until 7 and we take in our last customer at 7! We don't close early because we had a slow day. I'm sure corporate doesn't want to pay hourly employees to turn away revenue while occupying their post until scheduled closing. When I approached the Manager Aaron, he backed her actions as if it made good business sense and offered me one of their awful prepackaged sandwiches. I really do love this place. I Love it. I love the selection. The manager of the meat department would get me anything on a moment's notice. The cheeses are diverse. The grocery does an awesome job of having both specialty and basics, so we no longer shop at two different grocery stores to get Tide and organic seaweed salad. It is full of potential, and the Wegman's in Leesburg really comes a lot closer to meeting that potential (I found liver with eggs that tasted like my grandpa used to make, had a serious emotional moment). However, the Frederick store has some serious kinks, and they do affect the customer experience in a negative way. I don't often go there during the busy times, most of my shopping is mid-day, mid-week. So, nothing about this review reflects the weekend mob scene, which is more or less expectable in my opinion. First, and foremost, I have shopped here pretty much since it opened and in the last 6 months have had a consistent problem with them selling EXPIRED FOOD on the shelf. As of the most recent trip, we have accidentally purchased yogurt, granola bars, bread, and milk over the time shopping there that were expired at the time of purchase. I am not talking about expiring that day or that week, but in multiple cases, weeks or even MONTHS expired (beyond the date, you CAN taste the difference, which is how we noticed this was happening). When your favorite granola bar tastes dry and stale, you first blame the granola company, and then you look at the box. It's frustrating. Since the yogurt thing happened, we now check dates on everything as we take them off the shelf. With so many store employees bustling about, one of them saw and over-heard us putting the expired ones back on the shelf and asked us "are those expired?" we said "yes" and she took the one out of my hand and gave it to a person behind the refrigerator racks, alerting him to the problem. We told her that most of the selection of that brand of yogurt was expired, and she said she would take care of it. A week later, we were back (weekly shopping) and the same dates were still on the shelf, now one more week expired. I don't get it. ALWAYS CHECK THE DATES on the food you buy here, lest you find a frustrating surprise. The aforementioned story does sort of touch on another, more general problem. While many, many of the staff are friendly and helpful, there are some people who work there who really don't make the mark. They will tell you that they are making something (like brioche) on a certain day, but then when you get there, they don't actually make it anymore (this happened with the brioche about 4 different days, with them telling me to come back again and again). Mid-day in the empty store, I sat for about 15 minutes in front of a worker at the cured meat section saying "excuse me" to try and order some meat without him acknowledging me in the slightest. Since I was ordering over $100 worth of meat, it was kind of frustrating. When I finally tried to get a little louder (without being a jerk), he asked me tersely if I had taken a number. First, this tends to lend one to the belief that he heard me and was ignoring me, and second, there was NO ONE ELSE there. What numbers? Finally, a woman came from the other deli section (not cured meats, but the other part) and rolled her eyes at him and helped me while working around him. He never looked up again. Our most recent time, we asked a girl stocking the dairy section where the buttermilk was and her response was "I KNOW we don't have that." We were pretty sure a normal grocery would have it, so before leaving, we asked another, older individual who walked right past her (about 2 feet away from her) and picked it out for us with a smile. These stories should not overshadow the fact that the manager and many staffers are super friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. It's just that recently I've run into a string of really unhelpful employees there. I know its Frederick (heck, its only being re gentrified there BECAUSE of the Wegman's), but its unfortunate that such a nice manager has such crappy employees in this economy. Its a grocery store. People just want to buy food, eat food, and cook food, not deal with a twenty-something's attitude. None of this has deterred me from shopping here. It's Frederick, so you don't have to pay for shopping bags. I do love the selection, and the meat guy has successfully produced just about any animal I could think of to eat. But shopping takes longer when you are sifting through expiry dates. For the price, that shouldn't be part of the experience (in my opinion) at a place like Wegman's. read more

I was so ready to love Wegmans. In looking for a place when we moved here, listings use their proximity to Wegmans as a property feature, like a spare bedroom or heated floors. I wanted to love it. The store is big and clean with a good selection overall. The layout is stupid, like being in a casino. Prices are high, but you knew that from looking at the building. People raving about the cafe and food bar, are from Frederick. There is no good food in Frederick. (I'll amend after I try Volt). People from Frederick are awesome, I love my new community. But the bar is set really low for dining out. The bakery is frozen, shipped in product. They are being sued along with Whole Foods for claiming to be a scratch bakery. That considered, the prices are nuts! The meat and seafood departments are great and the specialty cheese table is good. The biggest problem is the employees. They block the aisles filling shelves and refuse to move, the counter help in all departments are put out and unfriendly. Wegmans consistently gets voted as a top employer in the U.S., so are you really that miserable? I understand that you're restocking produce and shelves, but you're doing that because the guest is shopping there. Smile and move out of the way. The last time I was there I walked up to the checkout, no one in line, checker was talking to the checker at the neighboring checkstand. Continuing their conversation, no eye contact she proceeded to check out my order. Still no eye contact, she picks up my package of soft shell crabs between two fingertips, face crumpled in horror and exclaims "ew, are these alive?" Drops them, unwrapped into the bag with other items with a shudder. She finishes ringing me up asks if I want cash back. Then continues her conversation with the other checker. I get home to find a bag that should have had a container of fresh fettuccine, bulk ground cinnamon and powdered sugar had not made it home with me. I was making soft shell crabs with pasta for dinner and cinnamon rolls for breakfast. It added two more trips to Weis to an already annoying day. Yes, I should have inventoried all my ingredients after discovering the missing cinnamon, but I digress. So my receipt ends up being in the bag with the unwrapped soft shell crabs which have soaked it like a sponge. Luckily if her name was on the receipt it was melted away by crab juice. I went back and was allowed to pick up the items later on. But only after being told several times I should have called. Yes, that's probably true, but I wouldn't have been very pleasant and thought I'd save having to apologize. Long winded, but sums up my overall Wegmans experiences. I'm floored at how excited people are over this place. It's ok, it's just a grocery store. The same trucks deliver goods to all the stores. It's just wrapped up in a pretty package here. read more

If you are shopping for either vegan and/or organic foods, this place is extremely good. They have a section in the store with all these foods together. Their buyers are very good at picking the right stuff. They have brought in a lot of the newer Amy's Kitchen dinners that are both vegan and gluten free; a lot of other stores have not. The vegan items in the frozen section are excellent. The gluten free section is pretty solid. They are adding a lot of fermented foods and cold press juices, including Blueprint. Their prices are much better than Whole Foods. I wish they carried an organic cold brew coffee. Their organic coffee beans are excellent. They even use an organic coffee when they make an americano at their coffee bar. The word is out; Wegmans has a huge selection and great prices. so they get incredibly busy on weekends. Made to order food using the freshest, most local ingredients they can get at a reasonable price. I had an issue today that was handled wonderfully by their management - excellent customer service!!!! The checkers are always extremely friendly as well. I like this one much better than the one in Germantown more due to logistics. I don't like trying to get to the Germantown location and don't like the parking area there. I want to love Wegmans- I really really do, in fact, I couldn't wait for them to open in Frederick because I LOVE them so much. This location however, is very disappointing and has been on several occasions, so finally- I gave up and back to Giant I go! The things I love about Wegmans? The selection is HUGE their semi prepared meals make my week easy and they are delicious. Why I don't go anymore- ever? I have bought BAD produce from this store on more than 4 occasions- I look it over in the store, looks ok- get it home and its bad by the next morning. Oh and once I had a cashier mischarge me and charge me over $8 for one green pepper. Of course I didn't notice until the next day. They need to get it together and live up to the Wegmans name! GET A NEW PRODUCE MANAGER and have your cashiers slow down so they are accurate! read more

I normally have had overall good experiences at wegmans in Frederick,MD but today was awful. The male cashier was extremely rude. He was packing my food and put two large juice in a thin plastic bag so I asked him to please double bag it. He hesitated and then slam the juice down into another bag, Even after that I said thank you. He then said what did I mean by that because he felt my thank you was to loud. What????? I said you were the one who slam my juice in into another bag and I even said thank you. This went on for a few seconds before he said I am going to call a manager. I said please call a manager. This was the most idiotic situation I have seen in a long time. All because how dare I ask him to double the bag--- Terrible person. It will be a long time before I will go back if ever to this store again. There are just too many stores that I can go and not be subject to disrespect. read more

I really enjoy the hot food bar here - especially the vegetarian bar and the ethnic foods bar - so many choices - a little expensive, but at least the quality is pretty good. I have been a huge supporter of Wegmans for years. The store, the products, the staff, all amazing, all the time. When I began planning my wedding, there was no question that I wanted the cake to be from Wegmans, my favorite. Much to my disappointment, when some family members went to pick up the cake, only part of the order was ready. The sheet cake I had ordered was ready to roll, but the 3 layer cake, the main event display cake was no where to be found. It was not only the fact that the cake was missing that was the issue, but how the staff handled the problem at hand. When the order was placed (which staff members insisted had never happened) and then confirmation calls that followed, we never spoke to the same person twice. This may have been part of the problem. But rest assured, if we placed the order for the sheet cake, wouldn't you assume we also placed on order for the main cake as well? The bakery department insisted this was not possible and that they could not provide a cake. Luckily, our wedding venue contacted Wegmans and a small cake was prepared and brought to the wedding. This issue did not ruin the day, but it was a huge disappointment that a company I have supported for years could not support me or act professionally during a very important day of my life. I have been a Giant shopper for the 2 years I've been living in Maryland. Wegmans was always a splurge place to get bulk candy for events as a treat but I never looked into shopping for anything else because i assumed it was too pricey. After having issues with the produce at my grocery store I was talking with a friend and they stated that they had made the conversion to Wegmans because their produce was far superior to anything else she had ever bought in the area. So because my wife and I are in the beginning stages of a healthier eating regimen we decided to give Wegmans a try. We are beyond pleased with every aspect of this store. One of the things I noticed was in every section of the store there was someone stocking the shelves, someone checking temperatures of foods in the buffet area and even just some employees asking customers if they needed help with anything. There was even someone in the floral department - all at 8pm on a Friday. if you walk into any other store on a Friday night more than likely there aren't many employees to be found and the shelves are near bare. All the employees are incredibly pleasant and the store is so clean. The produce section was even better than we could have imagined. So many different options and things that I have been wanting to try but either can't find anywhere or they charge you an arm and a leg for it. We ended up spending almost 2 hours in the store just walking around enjoying all of the different options they had to offer as well as comparing prices of their products to what we have paid in the past. I will forevermore be a Wegmans shopper and I would highly recommend this company - especially this location to anyone and everyone I know. Oh and their buffet is awesome! So many options and everything is delicious! Once a month we have our dinner here before we grocery shop - helps to prevent us from shopping hungry! :) read more

Clean. Nice bathrooms, though the water pressure was so low in the sink I couldn't really wash my hands as well as I would have liked. The prepared foods options were a little slim for Black Friday party shopping. But a good selection of sweets. The fresh soap and scrubs section was awesome. Love the bag wheel at the self check. Catering = GREAT. I used Wegmans Catering a few times to cater lunches at work. The catering staff were friendly and helpful. You have to pick it up, but it was worth it. Food was packed well, and presentation was excellent. All my co-workers enjoyed it! Food was fresh - no soggy bread. Salad was crisp, and they included a bottle of Wegmans salad dressing. I have very mixed feelings about the Wegman's in Frederick. Most of the time I find myself there when it is very busy and uncomfortable to shop in. I buy a lot of fresh produce and was surprised by how bad the produce was the one time I went but when I went back it seemed adequate. The food bar is pretty pricey but I think the regular groceries and organics are priced fair. I will only go there when it is convenient. It is too inconsistent. It could be that the store is still pretty new so I will give it another shot. I had really high hopes when I heard this store was coming to town! Update 3/22/12 Since I wrote this original review I found out that Wegmans is a big promoter of locally grown produce.
