My friend and I decided to give Weck's a chance. When we arrived the parking lot was packed, this is always an good indicator of good food. There was a 25 minute wait, however, there were plenty of seats available to sit on while we waited. The staff was super friendly, the environment was good and the food came out quickly. I ordered the lunch burrito with chicken, it came with bean and hash browns. The green Chile was on point (if you like it spicy), the beans and the hash browns were also very delicious. I love the fact that the have a kids menu, and they bring them some cookies to eat while they wait for their food. I would definetly come back here. I love the original pappas bowl super crisp hash browns bacon, ham and you can add sausage to with an egg on top. But the reason you go is for the sauce. Omg green Chile or red Chile. If you are in the need for comfort food, Weck's is a good place to check out. Their specialty is Papas, a Mexican dish made with pan fried potatoes topped with all kind of good stuff like chorizo, or bacon, or cheese, etc, with an egg on top, which is absolutely delicious. I'm a big fan of Swiss Rösti which I've never seen on this side of the pond but Papas is pretty close and there's a good chance I like it better ;-) The service is always good and although you won't get a latte their pot coffee is really good. The atmosphere is a little sterile with pretty harsh florescent lighting, so maybe not a date night restaurant, but it's definitely a place to get great food. read more

We finally had the chance to have breakfast here. It's clean and they're friendly. So first impressions, the coffee was horrendous! I forced it down so I could get a refill hoping it was just that batch. Yes! The refill was better but not by much. This place is in the spot where Dublin's used to be, and it looks completely different inside! Used to be darker and browner and greener when it was Dublin's, but it's a lot brighter with open space to accommodate the breakfast/brunch vibe for Weck's. On a Friday at 12PM, there was about a 30 minute wait for my party of 15. Without splitting the tables, they managed to seat all of us accordingly. Service was incredible with water being constantly filled, being check on by the manager 3 different times, and all of us got our orders in time. It helped that the server repeated all of our orders to us at the end - she knew her stuff! The food was good! I ordered the "original" papas bowl which comes with a bed of hash browns, sausage, ham, cheese, and an egg on top. You also get the choice of red or green Chile. The hash browns were fluffy and simultaneously crisp, and the egg was cooked to my perfect liking of over easy (you'd be surprised, but I've gotten this messed up with a non runny yolk at some restaurants *sad*). Now, I'm going to sound pretty New Mexican for saying this but... get the green Chile! It had a good amount of spice and added a nice peppery feel to the entire meal. The meal comes with a tortilla, but you can switch to pancakes for an extra $1. If you don't want to spend an extra $1 or eat pancakes, you can switch the tortilla for biscuits/toast/English muffin free of charge. I chose the biscuits, which I thought were just okay - not the best I've had, but not the worst. I can't complain because I can't make 'em at home. :) I ended up taking half of my food home and ate the rest for dinner that day... I do think that it is expensive for what you get. Even though I ended up taking half of my food home, I attribute that to me having less of an appetite after completing a school exam. Normally, I probably would have been able to finish it. If what I got was $6.99 as opposed to $8.99, I'd say that would be worth the price point. But for now, I'll say the extra $2 is to account for the attentive service and cute decor. What matters is that my friends enjoyed their meals, and I'd say this is a a nice addition to Las Cruces. :) read more

In the space that used to be Dublin's Street Pub, the Albuquerque-based chain Weck's has opened a breakfast and lunch place. The space has been completely redone, and it is bright and cheery and huge. Was greeted upon walking in by a gauntlet of extremely cheerful hostesses and waitstaff and ushered into a side room of the main room. The menu is long, with many more breakfast than lunch options, but I wouldn't say it's an innovative menu. Lots of egg dishes, some pancakes and french toast, chicken and waffles, breakfast burritos, that sort of stuff. Their lunch menu had burgers and some sandwiches. We ordered the papas with carne adovada, and the huevos rancheros, and coffee. The service was quick and friendly, the coffee was fine, and the food, while by no means the best breakfast I have ever had, was extremely plentiful. For $11 and change, the papas were a giant pile of what were supposed to be hash browns, topped with carne adovada and red chile sauce. I say "supposed to be" because they were not properly fried or crisp; it was more like a big pile of warmed up shredded potatoes. The carne was fine and the chile sauce seemed like the kind that comes in a can. The huevos rancheros were very standard. The food came with the kind of tortilla that comes out of a package (as contrasted with, for example, homemade). I've had similar food at Village Inn. You pay your bill at a set of tills by the front door, which potentially saves time having to wait for a server to take your card, ring you up, bring you back your card, etc. I am sure I will be back to Weck's, just because University Avenue is lacking in the breakfast and lunch department, but my initial impression is that the food is adequate rather than exciting, and will appeal the most to thrifty people with large appetites and small wallets who want to get in and out quickly (eg, most of Las Cruces). read more

My husband and I ordered two breakfast sandwiches. The description says "a fresh flaky croissant". The bread was soggy and doused in butter. We asked if they could switch the meat for something else like tomatoes, and they said they'd have to charge more. The breakfast sandwich was gross and the hash browns it came with were not any better. They did not taste like fresh hash browns at all, more like from a frozen packet and too salty. And this simple gross breakfast cost $23 for us two. Price is way to high for such poor quality food. We it only cuz we were starving and had already paid, but we only ate like a 1/3 of it and ended up with upset stomachs. We will never eat there again and would not recommend this place at all. Tried this restaurant for breakfast and my wife had lunch. The service was great, I ordered the potatoes with two eggs, meat and chili. The taste was great the portion was amazing. I am a big person 6' 280lbs on a 16 hour fast and I could not even eat half of my serving. My only complaint is that they serve the tortillas cold. My wife ordered the taco salad with ground meat. First, this location was originally a Bennigan´s, which unfortunately closed. A few years later Dublin´s (not so Irish) Irish Pub moved into the location. Now it is a Weck's. Weck's is a "local" New Mexico chain out of Albuquerque. It was named after one of the original owners, Doug Weckerly, who sold the restaurant to Art Kaplan several years later. Since then the chain has grown to 15 locations. Las Cruces being the 15th. I had originally tried the Weck's on Juan Tabo in Albuquerque with family who lived in the area. It was their suggestion we go there as it was one of their favorite breakfast stops. My experience was a bit less enthusiastic. They had "open" seating. By this I mean that all the tables are next to each other cafeteria style... with no booths, walls, or anything to separate noise or other customers. At this location, the tables seemed like cheap fold up style tables. It was very noisy and hard to walk in between the chairs/tables - backing up your chair often meant hitting someone behind you. It was very uncomfortable. The food itself was pretty good. Basically, common breakfast items with a Southwestern flair. There aren't too many "sit down" restaurants (chains) that offer red or green chile. So this was nice. But... some of the food tasted canned. It was so long ago (some 15+ years), I don't remember exactly what. So, cut to now, and we're at the new Las Cruces Weck's. Again, the seating is uncomfortable. The noise is horrible. The restaurant is only about half full and I cannot believe the noise level. The seating was only slightly better than the Albuquerque one from 15 yrs ago. The flatware was super cheap and hard to handle (literally "flat"), with no weight to it, making it extremely difficult to cut waffles/french toast with the fork (like cutting with plastic), and with the flat edge cutting into my hand. I had the french toast, which I'd been craving for weeks (it never turns out right when I make it myself). It was just as I wanted. It was ok. Long/short, Weck's is nothing more than a glorified Denny's. Sure, I'd rather eat here than Denny's. I'm not going to say that they are more expensive then Denny's, cus believe it or not, D's is pretty expensive (a party of four cost over $50, at Weck's a party of two was under $20). I was also looking at their ingredients for their bottled chile sauces for sale at the front check-out. I got to "hydrolyzed" protein of some sort, and that was that. Hydrolyzed anything is a form of msg. So yeah, it was ok. Nothing special, just better than national chains. Certainly not better than Las Cruces local restaurants like Jake's Cafe. read more

This place was hoppin' on the Sunday morning a friend of mine and I went to brunch. My buddy ordered biscuits and gravy with bacon. His comments were that the biscuits weren't quite baked all the way through, and the gravy was okay, but he wasn't head over heals about his breakfast. I tasted the gravy, and for myself, the seasoning was not present. It was pretty much milk gravy. Im not sure how it's made, but it didn't taste like they had made a roux for it. It was moderately thick, but I wasn't terribly excited about it. The saving grace was a nice batch of crisp bacon came with it.. it was fine. However, it lacked a wow factor. I had eggs and hashbrowns, toast, and a sausage patty. My breakfast was fine, and to my liking. The sausage seemed to lack seasonings as well. I had to ask the server for Ketup, which she brought right away. However, they forgot the jam for the toast. I had coffee to drink, and it was above average and good. The hashbrowns were very delicious. I was happy with my breakfast. I'd like to go back and try some of their other menu items. They serve breakfast and lunch. They really could make the gravy they serve much better even if it had a little bacon grease and flour roux as a base or a lovely sausage gravy. Overall, it was good but not quite fantastic. If I'm going out and spending good money for a meal, i expect top-notch food being served. On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd rate our meal at about a 7 or 8.
