I moved to Los Osos in February, and I'm not sure there has been a weekend yet where I didn't stop in to Wayward. Why? Because it's that damn good. Yes, mom, I said damn. I could have used another expletive, and it would have been just as apt. Every thing I've had from Wayward (and at this point, I've hit a lot of what they offer) has been near perfection. The hits: Croissants - The lamination on the croissants is absolutely bonkers. There is no such thing as too flaky, unless your idea of a croissant is a freaking Pillsbury crescent roll. I don't know how much butter goes into one of Wayward's croissants, and I think I'm probably better off not knowing. It doesn't matter if you get the plain ones, the chocolate ones (with Valrhona batons at just the right level of cacao to make you think "is this too sweet? Is this too bitter? don't I have better things to do with my time then think about cacao percentages?") or one of the danish-style ones (currently the asparagus, pecorino, and shaved egg yolk is my favorite. Seems like people are sleeping on this magnificence, the fools.); they're all going to make you feel like you've chosen the best thing on the menu. Kruffins - Take that amazingly laminated dough, shape it in a muffin tin, pipe in some delicious pastry cream and decorate it. Some have said it's too sweet for breakfast. Those people must hate themselves. Morning Buns - Wayward's take on a classic, just the right combination of sweetness and spice. I'm not sure what kind of magic is in that frosting, I assume it's distilled from the tears of unicorns or some other wizardry. Pizzas - Wayward's pizza Monday's are the perfect way to start your week. Orders open up on Saturday afternoon, you choose which pizzas you want and what time you want to pick them up. Yes, it requires a little bit of planning, but it is definitely worth it. The last thing (and possibly the most important) that really makes Wayward special is the people...everyone at Wayward is really friendly and always seem to be genuinely happy to see you. read more

We were headed home from camping in Morro Bay & stopped here for coffee & breakfast on the way. Ended up buying a lot to bring home because everything was so delicious & fresh. The avocado toast on the seeded bread was super yummy. We liked everything we tried. It seems they do change their options periodically as we were told the meyer lemon rosemary loaf we bought to bring home is the "newest". Definitely worth the short drive off the beaten path to try this local gem. Get there early if you want the quiche Lorraine though (they were sold out). read more

Wayward Baking is a true treasure in this tiny beach town of Los Osos. My husband ordered the ham and cheese croissant and I ordered the cherry pastry. They were both five stars! We got there a few minutes before 8 AM and there were already a couple of people in line waiting for the bakery to open. We dined inside and when we left, there were even more people in line. Fortunately, the line moves fast. I delayed posting my review because we wanted to try the Monday pizzas. We ordered the pepperoni/ricotta. It was amazing! Whenever I visit Los Osos I try to make it here at least once. I have yet to find a bakery where I live that I like as much as this one, and I always love whatever I get from here. The fresh sourdough is so good, and they always have new pastries to try whenever I come back. Also a nice place to get drip coffee, it's less expensive here than the cafes I usually go to, and just as good quality. Sometimes you go and have to wait a while, but there are points in the day where you can miss the crowd too and pop in pretty quick. I didn't even realize these guys were here until today! Omg! I had the Turkish Toast. All I can say is "orgasmic!" (And organic!) I don't generally say that about anything! It was well worth the $9. I took it to go and ate it in my car. I couldn't stop until it was done. Delicious and completely out of the ordinary. I'm not even sure what all was on it... mascarpone, gently stewed apricots, fresh thyme, a hint of something sweet, hazelnuts on top of really tasty bread of some sort. I will be back for sure! WORST bakery ever!! My husband went to this bakery to pick up some goodies for us and our granddaughter. Let's start off with the ham croissant... it had this tiny slice of what looked like Canadian bacon that you couldn't even taste because it was so small and thin. Then there was the strawberry and cream cheese pastry... barely any strawberry inside, mostly cream cheese. However, the fig tart was good and my granddaughter enjoyed the blueberry muffin. Everything is amazing! The persimmon toast is my favorite along the the pumpkin tea leave bread, and the egg salad sandwich. It is so hard to buy just one thing because everything is amazing! Oh! The potato danish and the pumpkin crouffin delicious! My husband really likes the ham sandwich and the passion fruit tart! And my daughter loves their hot chocolate and heirloom tomato danish. Not sure how I heard about this bakery but I'm sure glad I did! What a gem! Those are some lucky locals! First of all the young lady at the counter (who sadly I heard say it was her last day) was amazing. She was very welcoming, enthusiastic and knew what she was selling and was excited about it. The food was amazing. I opened my bag to look and couldn't resist to eat one of the croissant even though we were going to have lunch soon lol I was planning on keeping the second one for breakfast the day after but plan went to waste I ate it after lunch lol it was so delicious and perfectly crafted. I also had the caramel kettle corn eclair which I was expecting to be very sweet but it was absolutely not and was surprisingly delicious. My husband loved his peanut butter cookie. This will definitely be a regular stop on our central coast getaways. The only thing I would say though is could you please use tongs?
