My husband and I then spent two years working from home together in our front room (we call it the study now) without any rhyme or reason, just putting our desks wherever they fit, because it all happened so quickly. It was awkward and ugly, cords and monitors everywhere, and not a great look for people walking in our front door. The whole time, I was thinking, "when this is done and at least one of us goes back to the office, I want to make this room into a nice space to read and relax, and also to WFH when I have to." That's where Kanika comes in. I tried changing the place up on my own, but every choice I made seemed to make my space uglier and more awkward. It was time to hire a professional. That decision was worth every penny. In the end, my project turned out to be slightly bigger than just one room. I enlisted Kanika's help in choosing flooring, baseboards and paint for the whole house, furniture for my entire downstairs (we were still using the old living room furniture left by the previous owners), and light fixtures throughout. She was easy to work with and understood immediately what I was going for. My study is a real showstopper now - the walls are this deep blue color that looks amazing, she designed a gorgeous custom bookshelf that makes perfect use of the space, and she picked a couch that is the perfect size, just the right color, and so comfortable. And we still managed to get a desk in there for those WFH days. Literally just the other day, I was on a Zoom with someone and thought "this room behind me is so pretty, it looks like a fake background." But it's real, and in my house! And it wouldn't have happened without Kanika. The paint color she helped me pick for my bedroom is something I never would have chosen on my own, but I still regularly think about how nice it looks whenever I go in there. Same with the color of the living room couch, I'd never have found it on my own, but now that I have it, I love it. She knows her stuff. Kanika's husband Adi runs the business side of things. He managed the project, hiring contractors and keeping everything on schedule. The work was done on time, and he kept us in the loop, patiently answering any concerns or questions. And, no shenanigans with the final cost. Really, hiring Kanika Design was a great decision for us.

I did not want to close the book on our sale of the house without commenting on One Two Six Design…read more It was a miserable and infuriating experience. They brought in dirty and ripped furniture. We saw cushions placed in opposite directions to try and hide the rips. Everything was really feminine, lots of pillows and throws, in cream and white colors, targeted to a single Caucasian woman in her early 30s. There was nothing to speak to males who are also potential buyers or other cultures that are very prevalent in our area and also buy homes. They would not accommodate our request for having some different sized beds for the different sized rooms or even making one room a kids room. All they had and were going to provide were queen beds. They left dents in the house door and window frame, paint chipping, lots of marks in all the rooms on walls, doors, cabinets and stairs, scratches on the floor, and black patches on the carpet, particularly when they were removing all the staging items.  And we had a full interior paint job done and all new flooring and carpet. They were beyond careless and even the new homeowners commented on needing to get the carpet cleaned due to the marks from the staging removal. The person they had doing the touchups was incompetent. He used the wrong sheen of paint and put way too much paint on rather than just a dab where the nails actually were for all the "paintings" they hung everywhere. It was so noticeable. And this staging company chose the paint colors  for the interior so there is no excuse for using the wrong paint. We had to have them come back to fix more as every room had very visible issues caused by the careless people they employed. We gave them a pristine house and they left us with anything but.  This cost us close to $9,000, and they caused damage to what was just fully redone (painting, floor, carpet) that we also spent a ton of money on and time to work with the real estate agent and service providers to ensure everything was done thoroughly and well before the staging company arrived.  There was also nothing personable about the ladies when they came to measure the rooms. They could not be bothered to talk with us or involve us in the process. Maybe this is the norm for staging companies but selling our house is a huge deal for us and very costly to prepare it for selling and we don't want or deserve to be treated just as a transaction.

All workers were very polite and respectful, which we really appreciated since we were living in the house during construction. The process started with the bid, which was done quickly and clearly. Of the four bids we received, Sunny was competitive with others. However, we liked the professionalism and approachability of Jose right off the bat. Through the design process , we were updated regularly on options, and never felt pressured to select specific products. The suppliers recommended were excellent. Demo and construction was quick and very tidy. We lived in our house during construction, and both Sunny and their subcontractors made sure to keep things clean around their work areas. All workers and subs were always on time and showed up when they said they would. There were never long periods where no work was being done, as is often the experience with other contractors. Small things would come up during construction, and questions were asked, but they were transparent about options on how to deal with them, and we quickly moved through them. Often the construction team would be waiting on us to make decisions, instead of the typical reverse! They were again very prompt and communicative with construction. The quality of work was great too, as we would often look at the work during the process.
