Omg -- ask for MADELINE! We spent Friday evening together. It was the best Friday in a long while. My shoulders are relaxed now.

My experience was just ok. I wanted a massage for my birthday and read the reviews about how people were given such great service on their birthday (with the last bday review just days before mine when the person got cupcakes or other items), with special things waiting for them and I didn't experience that at all. I am recovering from an injury and left notes on my reservation, which no one seemed to have read in advance of my arrival. I felt like I was a burden to accommodate as soon as the therapist said they set things up for me on the 3rd floor of a building and could switch spaces if needed, due to my leg injury. Recognizing the limp in my walk and the notes on my reservation, I felt like a place with good customer service would have made the change to a lower room without putting it on me as if I was an inconvenience; I did say I could walk and it would just take time btw. I asked to go to the bathroom and offered to walk slowly upstairs since there is no customer bathroom on the first floor and I was told to use the employee bathroom. While it was with good intention, it quickly turned a day at the spa to using the outhouse -- I saw the behind the scenes if you will and it just didn't feel too clean or comfortable. The place is inaccessible, period. At no point during the reservation process did they communicate walk-up stairs (without handrails at points either) or ask for accessibility needs -- although I wrote things in my reservation. The massage itself was helpful given all of the knots I have in my back, due to a long injury. While the massage was something I felt better about, the experience was certainly not spa-like. I wasn't offered any oils or given space to discuss how I was feeling, what I really needed, etc. I wasn't asked about the pressure until 30+ minutes into the experience. It's the first time I've been to a spa, and before injury I went every 6 weeks or so, where no one offered me water/tea after my services. I didn't find any of it relaxing because the masseuse seemed irritated and just wanted to get things over with. I also had someone open the door during my massage and I guess it's because I was put into a room typically not used -- not clear to me why someone just walked in if doors were shut. I could hear water running from the washing machine and people talking in the back room or front waiting area the whole time. When the massage ended, the masseuse was quickly like "bye" and grabbed towels that I could hear being thrown on the floor throughout, and asked me to write a Yelp review. So, I am following through. When I went to check out, the front desk staff was on their cell phone dealing with personal credit card issues -- I could hear the conversation while I waited to pay because the phone seemed to be on speaker. Overall I was disappointed and would return to other day spas before going back here (go to Bluebell!). It's unfortunate because I would prefer my money to go to Black folks, who seem to primarily staff the place, and I think the masseuse was actually good at certain parts of the massage -- just clearly over it and it became evident by the end when they were just pushing around my back (I was close to saying we can just drop here and then realized it was almost over time wise). Perhaps for 100% physically able people, the customer service is better. Assume they don't read your notes and certainly don't go for a "celebration" like your birthday and expect anything (even a happy birthday). read more

I regularly get massages and have yet to find my go to place in DC. I went to Wat on the recommendation of a friend and I have to say, Yalem at Wat is amazing!! She is a truly experienced masseuse who understands how to work out deep knots without being painful. I prefer deep tissue massages and most of the time, the pressure is not quite strong enough but Yalem was able to exert the right amount of pressure on some very sore, strained areas of my back. She is a true professional and, on top of that, very kind and genuinely interested in making sure I was getting what I wanted out of the massage. Cannot recommend her (and Wat) enough! I had a 90 minute sports massage with Larissa. She is a life charger. I had a very difficult neck injury to contend with. She was very personable and knowledgeable. She delivered on both the very delicate, deep tissue work on my neck and she dig into my tough runners legs. Really wonderful on all counts. My massage with Daniel was my first one ever (so take my perspective with a grain of salt), and it was definitely helpful. He was responsive to my needs, was able to relieve a lot of tension from my back/shoulders and rear (apparently I don't stretch nearly enough, and there was a lot of muscle stiffness I didn't even know about), and managed pressure pretty well (though he definitely had to use a lot of pressure on my right shoulder because it was so tight, but he communicated that well). I'm definitely glad I went. One minor complaint though is that the water cups in the lobby are exceptionally small, and I filled mine up several times. Second time here, first experience was better. They have good facilities, but customer service from reception leaves a lot to be desired. I felt like I was in for a doctor appointment rather than a relaxing spa treatment. The woman at the reception kept pretending like she didn't understand me and wrinkling her nose at me, showing an undeserved condescending attitude. When I exited my massage room, I ran into a guy, I presume another massage therapist or perhaps part of the personnel that makes up the rooms; he stared at me like I was a strange animal entering his house; I said hello and he didn't reply, just walked past me staring coldly. Weird experience but the massage was satisfactory, although more could have been done to my arms, hands, fingers, legs, and feet. I booked 90 minutes and only got a little squeeze on each of my hands/fingers/feet/toes. The detergent they use is a little strong (I have allergies to strong soap scents) so it was a little unpleasant to have my face buried in the massage face holder thing. read more

Nyreshia was my massage therapist and she was amazing! It was one of the best massages I've had. She found spots I hadn't realized were tight and spent the right amount of time on each area. She incorporated stretching with the relaxation massage and I felt like a limp noodle afterwards. Of course, I wasn't ready for it to end and will definitely return the next time I head back to DC. My boyfriend and I actually first found this place on Yelp! We made an appointment for a couples massage to treat ourselves and were immediately impressed by the building's relaxing decor. Wat Massage is housed the top floors of a row home in Adams Morgan and is impeccably decorated. We filled out a detailed questionnaire, noted which areas were most troubling us, and were escorted to a very serene room with a private bathroom. Sheera and the other female masseuse (who unfortunately didn't introduce herself) did a great job of responding to our concerns & preferences and providing a relaxing and reinvigorating experience for 90 minutes. My masseuse's touch was very strong and she really worked out some of the knots around my neck and upper back. I noticed immediately after the massage that I was standing straighter and felt more relaxed. My boyfriend and I agreed that our massages were very good, but not outstanding. Wat is definitely more expensive than some of the other places in DC, so I'm not sure we would come again, just because of the price. A tip if you visit - bring a waterbottle to rehydrate after your massage, as Wat does not provide beverages. read more

I've been seeing Aaron for trigger point/ myofascial massages for about 5 months now and it has been so incredibly helpful. I have two slipped discs, a neck and hip injury (that's just to start), and physical therapy has not really ever worked long term for me. Since I've seen Aaron, he has made it possible for me to feel stronger at workouts, in my day-to-day life, and live pain free for more than a few days (I went a whole month without needing pain medication for the first time in about two years!). Aaron also does not put pressure to keep coming back, but just to measure how you're feeling. He has a very intuitive touch and will make sure you know why things are painful for the moment and how that helps in the long run. I honestly believe this is hit or miss depending on your masseuse. The overall place was nice and the staff were friendly; however, I had a very bad experience with my "Wat Signature Massage". I've had many massages and I did stray from my typical place to try Wat out as they had a first-timers special. My masseuse generally listened to my comfort levels and what I wanted to focus on, but I also think she confused left and right and focused on the wrong knee. Additionally, this is the first massage I've gotten where I feel absolutely worse after. My shoulders haven't been the same since and I have had a lot of uncomfortable pain since. Very professional place with therapists who know what they're doing. I've been to so many places who give mediocre massages, but the therapists at Wat customize the massage based on trigger points and focus on these areas to give you the most relief. As someone with scoliosis, I've been getting massages for a few years and was wanting to test out deep tissue massage for a while. I was nervous about trying it, as it can be a little painful especially with the wrong masseuse. But I've been getting massages with Julio for several months and couldn't be happier! He really works out tension so that I feel the benefit of the massage for days if not weeks following. As a fellow massage therapist, I've been looking for a person/location that is convenient and really good. I will go to anyone for a massage but I've been completely disappointed in the work I've received lately...until I met Alex at Wat Massage. I need a lot of neck and shoulder work. And for whatever reason, a lot of other therapists seem to ignore my requests even though I am extremely thorough in explaining my needs. I was 30 minutes early to my appointment and as I sat, I was able to hear the happy and satisfied responses of the clients leaving. Because of how happy they seemed, I extended to 90 minutes. As a practicing therapist, I believe in getting regular massages not only for health reasons but to also remind myself of what I like or don't like when working with clients. Alex did not disappoint. This review is long overdue, but I don't know what I would do without Irani Domingues! I have been going to her every month or so consistently for years now. I am a musician with special needs in my arms/neck area due to my profession, and Irani is great about attending to my problem areas. Her technique not only releases the knots but you can feel them continually releasing for a day or two after the massage, too! I can't recommend her enough! Aaron's in a league of his own as far as myofascial release work goes. Period. He literally helped save my career in 2016 when I thought I was headed for a disability claim due to issues with severe forearm pain and fatigue (rooted in computer over-usage). Believe you me, a lot of stuff that gets labeled carpal tunnel isn't, so don't rule out the benefits of myofascial work. Make no mistake--Aaron doesn't dole out froofroo massages. He's seriously well-educated and experienced (and riotously funny btdub), so he'll put through the wringer whatever needs it. (You'll be glad he only books one-hour sessions, lol.) So if you want a super relaxing spa experience, go with the other choices at Wat (who I'm sure are awesome). But if you're at your wit's end with musculoskeletal pain issues, you'd do well to consider trigger point/myofascial work with Aaron. Super guy and worth ever penny. read more

I've been extremely tense and my body has been aching in preparation for an important exam. I thought, what better way to ease the tension by getting a massage to alleviate my body a couple of days before. For starters, I have never gotten a massage-- I didn't know what types to look for nor did I know what the etiquette for receiving one entailed. After googling for days and looking all over the web, groupon, yelp, etc, but I stumbled on Wat Massage. It was actually the yelp reviews that solidified my decision.... So, I booked it. I BOOKED IT. Honestly, I didn't know what I booked but it was the first time special haha. The folks at the reception were very kind and the check-in process was smooth. The building was in compliance with the CDC standards via mask wearing, etc. Madeline, my massage therapist, came down to greet me and she was so NICE. She knew it was my first time (because I wrote it in my comments when booking the appointment), and was very transparent about the entire process. She also queried what areas I would like to focus on. The ambience was serene, quiet, and peaceful -- no bright lights. She would check in with me to check in with me and made it a safe space to ask her any questions. 100% a judgement free zone. I'm sensitive to touch, but didn't even realize she was touching a knot until the relief I felt after. When the session ended, I felt so much lighter as if a weight has been lifted and more mobility in areas like my hips. It's a day after as I'm writing this review and my body is a bit sore. On the tail end of a stressful work trip to D.C., I decided to get a massage to relieve some tension. As always, I perused yelp for reviews on therapists not too far from my hotel which was close to the DuPont Circle area. Thankfully the reviews on Wat Massage and more specifically Julio, were spot on! To start, there was an amazing aroma wafting through the entire place and the zen-like vibe was fitting. The guy at the front desk (didn't catch his name) was friendly and inviting but more importantly - professional. I arrived 10min before my appt to fill out standard questionnaire and Julio greeted me right on time. He is truly unlike the typical masseuse. Julio was extremely professional and had an amazing technique coupled with an innate understanding of the body. He works on your body to relieve tension not for a superficial effect. I feel completely relaxed without the uncomfortable feeling of a too-intense massage. I wish I could bring Julio back to NY with me!! Great experience!! read more

Julio hydrated my fascia like no other man has done before. He even taught me what fascia is! Since working with Julio, I feel that my body awareness has spiraled into a new dimension. I am now ready to be on the same team as my body. Julio encouraged me to breathe deeply into the spaces where I hold tension, and through this breathwork I was able to deal with the IN-TENSE emotions moving through me. Julio seems to be very grounded in his own body awareness. This is preferable, for I don't want to be helped by a therapist who has no idea where they stand on their own. His stance was strong and stable, and his grip was deep and rigorous, but not painful. The word "intense" might best describe my therapeutic experience. What I love about Julio is that he puts words to his experience of my body. I am a Gemini and so I thrive when engaged in intellectual conversation. He was able to meet me where I'm at and offer that kind of headspace, unlike many of the other more rigid therapists I've encountered in the past.
