My time at total release was so relaxing and lovely. My masseuse really listened to me and hit the spots that were the most problematic. You have the option to take off your clothes and keep them on. No fuss just a truly great massages. Facility was clean and staff was kind. Total release is a true gem.

So wonderful! This place along with Bliss Reflexology spa probably rank as my favorite places to de-stress and relax in the DC/MD area. I think Mr. Wei was my masseur... but I was so relaxed that I forgot to ask for his name. You know it's a good massage when you suddenly don't know if your own soft snores woke you up. WAS I SNORING?! If so, that's embarrassing. Oops. Oh wells. When the massage was over, I had trouble climbing off the massage bed and walking out the door. That's just how wonderful it was! Parking: There's street parking - the meters during normal hours are only for an hour I believe... but there's 2 hour street parking. Location: It's located in an office suite... but once you find 5506, just go up the stairs and the office is located to the right at the end of the hall on the left. Service: Very friendly... making the appointment was super easy to do. Ambience: Very nice. Many of the reflexology/acupressure places I've gone to have only curtains that separate the beds ... this one actually has walls and a door to separate the massage space from other spaces and the waiting area. The music they play is probably the most soothing. Mr Wei is very good at pinpointing all the muscles that are tight (he knew exactly where I needed work) ... and gave just the right amount of pressure. Also, this is the best reflexology place in town, by far! A lot of places tend to breeze through the feet... a little pressure here and there and then they're done! But here, I could feel him working on all the parts of my feet ... imagine those little reflexology charts you see. The price is very affordable for this area ... (I had a groupon deal)... Definitely will be coming back again and again.

The entrance is in between the Greek restaurant and the bagel bakery

I've seen all kinds of set-ups and all kinds of practitioners: schools, individual's homes, medical offices, relaxing rooms...all of it. I've even run the training program of a Somatic Awareness center in MA. So, I've seen a lot and am glad that there are so many different environments and modalities available for healing, self care, relaxation. The Spa Room is not for everyone. You want a lux experience where you can disappear? Maybe the Spa at The Oriental is more your speed. You want a set routine with products you see for sale in department stores? The Red Door for you. (I've had some very nice foot massage & pedicures there!) But when you need people to take care of you, because your body hurts, because you are struggling with your health, because you've had too much stress, The Spa Room is for you. If you need practitioners who are caring because of who they are and the lifestyles they embrace, not because they put on a manner like they put on a uniform, then The Spa Room is for you. If you'd like to try something new, like really well-made natural products (including Red Flower, which is amazing stuff. The closest place I can buy it is NYC other than The Spa Room) or some new ideas or some new body therapy, then The Spa Room is for you. If you are missing the Holistic Health center you used to go to in southern Vermont or western Massachusetts, then The Spa Room is for you. I've seen both Mary and Jessica repeatedly, and both are both skilled and also "intuitive" in their practices, uniquely sensitive to my needs as a client. Most recently I've been seeing Mary for a unique body work I have not experienced before. It is more active than massage; and more passive than Hanna Somatics. And it is incredibly, incredibly gentle, as is Mary. If you think The Spa Room might be for you, I suggest you get in touch. They'll help you out.

I walked up to the door and it was locked (I think only on Sundays), after re-reading my email about using some code to unlock the door I tried to use the key pad it ended up dialing for someone. As I was calling the office, Tyler my masseuse walked out to open the door. He was very polite and friendly. He led me to the office to fill out a form. I used the bathroom quickly it was small but they really tried to make it nice for customers. I also asked if the facial that came with the package, could be skipped since I didnt want to wipe off the makeup he was flexible about replacing that with a longer massage. My massage included hot stone but there was not quite a prepared flow instead he focused on the problematic areas that I pointed out in the form. I also told him that I pulled the area below my shoulder blade the night before he suggested to massage the psoas which was overworked because I use the pilates reformer everyday. He took some time to massage and relax the area. After the massage the remaining soreness around the shoulder blade was eliminated. I enjoyed their innovative focus on muscles that were not traditionally massaged or paid attention to. The masseuse was knowledgeable, patient and listened to customer's needs. I would definitely go back again.

I booked the appointment online and put down the necessary deposit. They were running a special for the month of January- 10% off during weekdays and it included aromatherapy. The 10% off did not automatically apply and I'm pretty sure I didn't get the discount. Parking- street parking if available. We lucked up and got a spot right in front of the spa. No paying a meter was required. My massage therapist was Mike and my husband's massage therapist was Kimberly. The couple's room was tight so I could feel, see and hear every time my husband's therapist talked to him or when she moved. My husband felt that Kimberly just couldn't get the pressure right even though she asked. He also felt like she took a break after every touch so there was awkwardly long waiting periods. He said her touch was often too soft even though he told her the pressure wasn't enough. She was pleasant; notwithstanding, she just wasn't the right therapist for him. Mike also asked me once about the pressure and at the time, it was okay. As the massage went on, it became uncomfortable. In all fairness, I should've spoken up. The elbow and forearm down the back and around the shoulders was the most painful. We got the massages on Monday morning and I'm still in pain on Wednesday. This is the first time I've asked for a male massage therapist and boy could I tell the difference. The pressure alone was intense. The best part was the scalp rub and the lavender scent (although there was something mid-massage that smelled like mildew). When asked what areas of focus before starting, I mentioned that I wanted my mid-back and arms focused on because I have carpal tunnel. Those areas weren't paid any special attention--they were simply apart of the regularly scheduled program - upper left, then upper right, then lower left, the lower right, then flip and repeat and end with scalp. This was the process for both my husband and I though he was flipped front a lot sooner than I was. Overall, I wouldn't mind returning if I'm in the area and trying another therapist.

However: The place, in general, needs a sprucing up. The lobby/shop and bathroom all could use a good clean and maybe a paint job, and there was a dead cockroach in the bathroom, which kind of killed the vibe post-salt cave experience. We live in a city though and these things happen -- but a more dedicated focus to overall details of the space would make the experience even better.

It seemed there were a few snafu's that morning starting with folks that showed up for their treatments to a closed shop, and then we were told to be there 15 min before our session or it could be given away to someone on standby... so we RACED over and literally ran from the parking garage, but our session didn't start until 10:15 so we just sat around for 30 min waiting. There were lovely little tea and water glasses that said help yourself but there was no tea or water. I totally get that things happen- and we certainly were attended to- not a big deal. Everyone was very nice so what are you gonna do! We just wore yoga pants/active wear and clean socks as you can't go into the cave with shoes OR bare feet- so be sure to bring your socks! We were lucky enough to have the cave to ourselves by chance- but I may bring earplugs or an eye mask to truly zone out if we were sharing the cave next time. I wish the room was a bit more sound proof- you can really hear everything right in the lobby. It's a little distracting for a meditative session but I also understand that it's close quarters. There is ambient music playing that drowns some of it out! Otherwise the cave is really cool and you can tell it was a labor of love to build. I loved walking around on the "salt sand"! All in all I really enjoyed our experience. The owner was very nice and brings two large golden retrievers to the shop. I am a dog lover and they are VERY chill dogs- but just be aware if you're not a fan or have an allergy. We look forward to our next visit!
