The name of the business, website and actual office were contemporary but it was stuck in a very old brick building, in fact it was right across from Mickey D's at Tentley. I walked up to the door and it was locked (I think only on Sundays), after re-reading my email about using some code to unlock the door I tried to use the key pad it ended up dialing for someone. As I was calling the office, Tyler my masseuse walked out to open the door. He was very polite and friendly. He led me to the office to fill out a form. I used the bathroom quickly it was small but they really tried to make it nice for customers. I also asked if the facial that came with the package, could be skipped since I didnt want to wipe off the makeup he was flexible about replacing that with a longer massage. My massage included hot stone but there was not quite a prepared flow instead he focused on the problematic areas that I pointed out in the form. I also told him that I pulled the area below my shoulder blade the night before he suggested to massage the psoas which was overworked because I use the pilates reformer everyday. He took some time to massage and relax the area. After the massage the remaining soreness around the shoulder blade was eliminated. I enjoyed their innovative focus on muscles that were not traditionally massaged or paid attention to. The masseuse was knowledgeable, patient and listened to customer's needs. Bait and Switch. Steer clear unless you like wasting your time! I bought a groupon for the Private Massage Class and paid extra for the weekend slot. I contacted The Spa Room on the same day I purchased the Groupon and was told by Mary they didn't have any weekend availability, and asked if I would like to come in during the week instead. I again reiterated I purchased a weekend slot, and Mary replied that if I didn't want to come in during the week, I should contact Groupon and cancel. I pointed out that the weekend deal was still available on Groupon, and she stated something to the effect 'that's Groupon's problem, not mine' After several email trying to work something out, I contacted Groupon and let them know the circumstances and they refunded my money. The Groupon rep also stated they will be contacting the business to see what the issue is since the posting is still up for weekend classes, but obviously they are not able to deliver. After reading other reviews stating how bad the massage class is, I am glad I was able to get my money back! read more

I don't understand how this place gets such good reviews. it's completely overrated. I ordered a Groupon for a private couples massage. First we show up, then Mary gives us a 30 min lecture on massage and the use of massage. It's like why don't you just give us a pamphlet to read about afterwards. It was a complete waste of time. Then when we actually get to the massage, make sure you and your partner are the same height, because the table does not adjust and you either have to reach up or bend down when massaging your partner. Basically you pay $99 for a lecture you could get in a pamphlet that has nothing to do with massage techniques. Then you actually only do about 10 mins of massage on your partner. I honestly would have spent my money better had I spent the same $100 at a massage place at a mall. Avoid this place at all costs! read more

Stephanie is the only reason The Spa Room isn't getting one star from me! Her customer service skills deserve commendation after the mess that was my appointment today. Stephanie's massage was remarkable and helped relieve tension in my neck and shoulders, which was much needed. Though Stephanie rescued my appointment, I am very disappointed with Melissa. I had a scheduled appointment for 1:00pm. I live on the other side of the red line so left an hour ahead of schedule to make sure that I arrived with enough time to fill out necessary paperwork, etc. Well, I arrived to The Spa Room and let myself in using the code in my email. How bizarre, though: no one was there. Literally an empty waiting room with nobody inside. I set my purse down on the couch and poured a glass of cool water which was set out. After 10 minutes of waiting, I saw that there were several clipboards with client info sheets attached so figured it would be wise to fill this out so as not to take away from any scheduled appointment time. My appointment time came and went and I saw Stephanie walk into the room at about 1:05 or so (after 15 minutes of me waiting alone). Once she realized that Melissa never showed up, she was very helpful in trying to get ahold of her. Ten minutes later, she discovers that Melissa is not even in the building so she stepped in to offer me my scheduled massage since I had traveled a while specifically for my appointment. A half-hour after my scheduled appointment, my massage began (which was generous of her to step in for her colleague's failure to show up). The only disappointment was that the hot stones were not prepared as scheduled, but Stephanie offered me to substitute this treatment for another. As stated before, her services were wonderful and I have no complaints there. In fact, I am impressed that she was able to get me so relaxed since I had been stressed leading up to this appointment and the Melissa no-show didn't help. After the treatment, Stephanie was as friendly as can be and apologized for the mishap. She also offered me a gift certificate for a future service, which I am honestly only using because of her. If not for her positive customer service, I would have written this place off for good after my check-in experience today. I was raised holistically, having had all sorts of body work and massage and reflexology my whole life (yep, I'm lucky). I've seen all kinds of set-ups and all kinds of practitioners: schools, individual's homes, medical offices, relaxing rooms...all of it. I've even run the training program of a Somatic Awareness center in MA. So, I've seen a lot and am glad that there are so many different environments and modalities available for healing, self care, relaxation. The Spa Room is not for everyone. You want a lux experience where you can disappear? Maybe the Spa at The Oriental is more your speed. You want a set routine with products you see for sale in department stores? The Red Door for you. (I've had some very nice foot massage & pedicures there!) But when you need people to take care of you, because your body hurts, because you are struggling with your health, because you've had too much stress, The Spa Room is for you. If you need practitioners who are caring because of who they are and the lifestyles they embrace, not because they put on a manner like they put on a uniform, then The Spa Room is for you. If you'd like to try something new, like really well-made natural products (including Red Flower, which is amazing stuff. The closest place I can buy it is NYC other than The Spa Room) or some new ideas or some new body therapy, then The Spa Room is for you. If you are missing the Holistic Health center you used to go to in southern Vermont or western Massachusetts, then The Spa Room is for you. I've seen both Mary and Jessica repeatedly, and both are both skilled and also "intuitive" in their practices, uniquely sensitive to my needs as a client. Most recently I've been seeing Mary for a unique body work I have not experienced before. It is more active than massage; and more passive than Hanna Somatics. And it is incredibly, incredibly gentle, as is Mary. If you think The Spa Room might be for you, I suggest you get in touch. They'll help you out. read more

I purchased a Travelzoo deal for a 50-minute massage and 15-minute facial cleanse. I was hoping this wouldn't be the typical " since it's a voucher, the service will be mediocre" but it was. I was supposed to have a total of 65 minutes but my massage therapist (Suzana) did everything in less than 55 minutes. Also, the hot stone massage consisted of extremely hot stones that made my massage uncomfortable. and her overall technique wasn't the best. I would not recommend this spa. read more

I wish I had come here a lot sooner. I bought as a gift for my wife over the holidays a Living Social certificate good for a 2 hour massage. She was so excited about it I decided to get my own and make a double date out of it. Its a very popular place so we had to make reservations for a Saturday three weeks in advance. They were very flexible in helping us find a date that worked for both of us at the same time. We parked around the corner (very easy neighborhood parking) and went into the building. We got a little turned around when downstairs it said the suite was #203. It turned out that they used to be in #203 but are now in #202. Because of the proximity, we soon realized our mistake and went to the right place. We were greeted by Mary who is very outgoing and positive. The space is very cozy and warm. We arrived early to fill out some paperwork, and we each went to our respective masseuse and masseur. Don took care of me and did a fantastic job. I believe there were a few moments when I may have fallen asleep on the table. I do a lot of typing at my job and he took extra care of my arms and hands with stretching and applying pressure to several points. As part of my massage package he applied hot stones which felt wonderful. Mary took care of my spouse who said that she definitely gotthe creaks out of several places. We both met at the end with smiling faces. I feel refreshed and with an extra spring in my step. My spouse is already thinking of coming back for her birthday. I wish I ahd found this place sooner, but now that I have, I definitely will be coming back when I need a personal recharge. read more

I first went to the Spa Room in August 2011, based off of Yelp reviews, and I still go there because I love i! My first time I saw Mary, who was amazing, and then Jessica, who I also loved. I chose Stephanie one day based off of her availability, and she is now my absolute favorite!! She is simply amazing. It sounds odd but I love her "energy" -- she's just a pleasant person to be around, her touch is very confident and she's very good at finding sore spots. I work out a lot and like more of a "sports massage" that really digs in, and Stephanie does this. I do think the owner, Mary, does a great job of hiring therapists, so they are all at a fairly high level, but I think everyone just has to find the right "style" of therapist who meshes with them. That said, I've also seen Abby and Melissa, and didn't love them as much as Stephanie, Jessica, and Mary, though they were still good. It can sometimes be a little tough to schedule an appointment in the short term that works with your schedule if you work normal "business hours." However, they have appointments Saturdays and Sundays so if you plan ahead a little it's not a problem. Although I previously preferred more "no frills", clothed massage places over spas, I think the Spa Room strikes a nice balance. You do derobe and have a drape and all that, and it is called a "spa", but they don't try to sell you a lot of crap, and they also don't just slather you with lotion and leave you feeling like you had nothing done -- they will really dig in if you ask them to. The feel of the Spa Room just makes me happy. The employees are friendly and courteous, there's cute, simple decor, and it's a small business that clearly has an owner and employee that care about doing a good job. Mary is a goddess. I'm a self-proclaimed massage whore and have had more massages than I can count. I can honestly say that my massages from Mary (I've now had 2) are the best I've ever had. She listened to what I needed from my massage, took note and made magic happen. I walked in barely able to stand up straight after a grueling few weeks at work -- then walked out feeling refreshed, relaxed, and completely pain free! And the massage oil she used is so good I'm going to get some for myself to keep at home! I've decided that I love myself enough to visit Mary at least once every 8 weeks from now on. read more

I came to the Spa Room through a group deal offer and got a two-hour massage with paraffin and and foot treatment. The space -- in an older building that I'm guessing used to be residential apartments -- is modest, simple, clean, quiet and homey. Mary is a very attentive, warm and talented therapist, and even without the deal, the prices are extremely reasonable. My only caveat/issue is that the treatment ended about 5-8 minutes early. I was told "time has been built into the session for you to just lie on the table and absorb the work," which annoyed me, because when it comes to massages, I want to enjoy the work part for every last second possible! So I'd recommend trying this place out and specifying that you don't want any "rest" time. read more

I have terrible knots in my shoulders and Abby has very efficiently gotten rid of them. I leave feeling relaxed and those knots are gone. I am always looking for a good place to get massages and by good, I mean a place that is worth the money, b/c we're spending a lot in DC to get a massage, and my shoulder knots are gone. I first came to the Spa Room when I purchased the hot stone / facial cleanse deal (after checking out their reviews on Yelp first, of course!). I randomly chose Tyler and that was a great accidental choice! He asked a ton of questions about all my aches/pains/past physical activity etc. and we agreed to skip the facial cleanse to get more massaging time (yay!). He did an amazing job on my neck, which harbors years of tension, has alignment issues, and gives me headaches - it was like having it dissected and reassembled, knot-free. He also found all kinds of other spots where I didn't realize I had tension/pain. I felt great for days afterwards. I've gone back a few times since and have had equally great results. He tends to go past the allotted time to keep working on trouble spots, which I appreciate! So, it sounds like most of the therapists here are pretty great -- they are pretty serious about who they hire. But I've stuck with Tyler so far. He is super talented but also has a ton of knowledge about how the body works -- definitely recommend. I will be doing some Feldenkrais sessions with him soon to figure out my knee and hip pain, too. read more

I came in this past week (week of 12/20) for the first time to redeem a gift certificate I received fir my birthday. I have been experiencing discomfort, bordering on pain, in my trapezium and neck muscles for several weeks and wanted to get it massaged in hopes to alleviate the pain. My massage therapist, Jessica, asked me several questions before hand and then jumped in to work on the areas. She spent almost the entire time pulling, kneading, and stretching my pained muscles; sometimes it hurt, but I assumed she knew how far to go without causing more damage...and I was correct! I woke up the next day with no discomfort in my neck and much less in my shoulder area. Jessica even suggested that the neck pain was probably from overcompensating too much to alleviate the shoulder pain. I have always been a firm believer in massage as therapy and Jessica is truly impressive. At first I thought it would be too much time spent in one area of my body, but 50 minutes flew by so quickly. I went to The Spa Room based on the suggestion of my amazing LMT Melissa Steger who retired to stay at home with her two children. I don't remember who gave me my massage which might say something. She was fine. I would go back to her but she was not amazing like Melissa. I probably should reach out to find out why my old massage therapist recommended them. The set up is sort of strange. It is in an apartment building and you have to have a code to get in then you have to go to The Spa Room. When it was time for my massage, we went to still another room. It was clean and mostly quiet (it's located on Wisconsin Avenue in an apt bldg. so it is not the amazing quiet I expect when I go for a relaxing massage). I didn't leave feeling amazing but it was a good massage. I like to feel like a new woman after a massage. I might try them again. Haven't yet decided. read more

So I went here with my SO for a couples massage. It was very relaxing and they were very attentive. My SO had never had a massage before and was completely awkward and uncomfortable when we got there but after the massage he was completely relaxed and realized it wasn't as bad as he imagined. lol We had Jessica and Sally. They made us feel very comfortable and even my SO said he would consider going back. That's saying something lol Parking was super easy and nothing felt pretentious. My boyfriend and I visited The Spa Room tonight for the first time after buying the Travelzoo special of a hot stone massage with wild rose facial cleanse (50 minute treatments) for $79 and the experience we both had was amazing!! When we bought the vouchers back in October I tried to book online but couldn't find a good time and date when we could come at the same time. When I called however, someone was very helpful and we were able to find tonight as a time that worked for us both and allowed us to come after work. We drove to the location for convenience, although I understand it is easily accessible by metro as well, and had no trouble parking. There are plenty of side streets with 2 hour parking until 8:30 pm which should be plenty for even a 90 minute massage. When we arrived the building looked like an older apartment building. You would never know a spa was inside. The front door was unlocked and no code was needed. Inside we used the code that was provided in the confirmation email (what a convenient touch!) and let ourselves in. We used the restroom in the waiting area and helped ourselves to some peppermint green tea. My masseuse was Abby while my boyfriend saw Sally. We were both very impressed. They both focused on our trouble areas and used plenty of pressure - the best kind of massage! The hot stones were great and were put to good use on our muscles. The rose water cleanse was nice, and relaxing, but not something I would go for again. I thought the price regularly, $140 for 50 minute hot stone and rose water) was a bit high for the area but the cost of only $15 to add on hot stones will certainly make their hot stone massages competitive in the area. Other Yelpers have mentioned their monthly specials and I will definitely be looking for those! After visiting The Spa Room I understand that the business began as literally "the spa room" and has since been expanded to four rooms. Given that they close at 7, I think booking appointments after work hours can be tricky but as in our case, we were able to find a time for both of us and the wait for an appointment was well worth it. We will definitely be back again to use the $30 credit awarded through our Travelzoo deal! I highly recommend this spa and our massage therapists to anyone in need of a great, professional, deep tissue massage! read more

Mary listened to what was wrong with my back and what I was looking for, and then she basically made many subtle adjustments and worked out a lot of kinks. The massage felt relaxing at the same time. It is now December and the owner (Mary) continues to tell me she doesn't have the availability to honor the offer that she herself chose to sell. To make matters worse, it's become obvious from reading other reviews going back SEVEN years that she is perfectly willing to accommodate the schedules of full-paying customers, but not for anyone who purchased a Groupon, TripAdvisor, or Yelp deal. If she didn't want our business, she shouldn't have offered it, nor dicked us around when we tried in good faith to find times that would work for her (most businesses try to accommodate their clients, not the reverse). Only because there is no way to rate 0 stars do I even give them 1 star. I received a gift certificate and a voucher for my baby shower. The terms were not clear, but I booked a prenatal massage for myself and a back massage for my sister so we could enjoy some down time together before my baby is born. For two weeks I looked forward to today. I was so excited to see how many great reviews and never thought I would leave as disappointed as I did. Now all the great reviews may be because there are different staff performing services--unfortunately I was booked with Suzana Caro, LMT, NCTMB, CD (DONA) Licensed Massage Therapist, Certified Doula-much to my shock a certified Doula as well-those babies must cry a couple of extra tears if she helps deliver them--RUDE and UNPROFESSIONAL does not begin to cover it-and I am 9 months pregnant today! We arrived 10 minutes late-we attempted to call but no one picked up. Um-We left Rockville over an hour before our appt-we were on time except parking is impossible. I was booked for 45 min Prenatal Massage, sister had 30 min. So I undestand-dock me 10-15 minutes. But from our arrival she looked like miserable and would not even give us eye contact. She takes me to the massage room and says I will still be charged the full amount, but she can only perform 10 min of massage time! I said, no its ok, I will just reschedule and you can just massage my sister. She said I was not allowed to reschedule and the Gift Certificate was void?! My sister questioned why and she responded "well you were late and that is your problem not mine." She could have handled thing in a much more professional manner-and could have allotted us 30 min each. Instead she opted to be rude, attitudinal, and wanted to take our money for doing nothing. I called a really nice girl answered, she must be one of the women everyone raves about--helpful, patient, and really wanted to assist me not leave so upset. The manager/owner Mary Szega- really seems easily frazzled. While there could not figure a solution. Really should have had Suzana step out to hear us out, she is the OWNER and could have found multiple solutions, but instead told us a story of kids putting their money together to treat their Mom for a Mother's Day treat, the mom, like us, was late-so Mary shared she felt bad but did not render services, voided her gift certificate, and did not grasp why the mom was so upset. How can she do that-take people's money, not render services, over clients being a bit late. And not just taking some of the amount but all of it. She seems nice and intends to do well, but seems to lack good customer service skills. At the end, she did send an email, trying to correct the situation by having Yelp refund my friends money. So we appreciate that. However, I will never forget this bad experience and would not recommend buying any of their deals without calling and asking for CLARITY in what the complete offer entails. ALSO-DO NOT GO TO SUZANA CARO--I REPEAT--DO NOT GO TO SUZANA CARO! She was horrible-just seems like a bitter person more concerned over the money than over providing a friendly experience for a first timer! I cannot describe just how much of an awful human being she is and how bad she treated a pregnant woman who was nothing but nice to her. I have never said to someone that I don't like them, but I told her today. Such a shame. I do not recommend SUZANA-especially if you are pregnant.. I seem to be the first review under 3 stars. Unfortunately, I did not have a fabulous experience here. I didn't have a bad one, either. At first. I've just had much better massages. I had a Groupon that was given to me. I have a regular massage therapist, so I didn't need to use it. The week prior to my Spa Room appt, I visited a friend out of town, who treated me to a professional massage there with a very experienced therapist. Saying all this to say that I have been getting massages for decades. The out-of-town massage was a trip, psoas anyone? I've never had my stomach massaged, and it is worth it, in the right hands. She was amazing - if you're ever in Birmingham, AL. I went to the Spa room, having just pulled something in my arm from a long stint washing dishes at a charity event a couple of days before. I have long-standing neck, shoulder, and back pain. I told my Spa Room therapist about this, and settled in for a relaxing massage. The table was comfortable, the therapist was adept at wrapping, she hit all the right spots. She used hot stones, which are great at relaxing muscles. But her pressure was very tentative. Her frame was so tiny, and I'm not sure if she knew how to really keep her strength up. She's all muscle, don't get me wrong, but her pressure was inconsistent. I got the feeling that she was inexperienced, that she'd just gotten her license recently. The thing about massage - you either have it or you don't. Many hours of school and a certificate are not proof that you have a natural ability to touch and heal people. Luckily, I have had the good fortune to have met about 5 excellent therapists in my life. I have now learned not to choose a therapist out of the phone book, nor Groupon promotion. But the worst part of all is that she overworked my sore forearm, and caused the pain I already had to become worse. I left with my arm red, irritated and sore. I actually had to go to my once-monthly therapist and confess that I'd cheated on him. I had to get him to fix all of the things the Spa Room had made worse. This is a nice operation, run in a space that was clearly a converted apartment. The staff are very nice and friendly. They don't try to sell you anything you don't want. The space is odd in that the therapy rooms are tiny, it seems like the therapists have very little space to move about in. But the main reception room is enormous. I guess they're just working with what they have. The location is good, parking is not hard in the neighborhood. But the building is hard to get in to. read more

I had my first massage from the Spa Room this past weekend after purchasing a certificate from Plum District for a 50 minute pre-natal massage. My appointment was with Sally, who was fantastic. The spa is "no frills" but relaxing enough - and Sally did a wonderful job explaining exactly what was going to happen during the massage (it's a bit different getting prenatal) and the areas she was going to focus on, etc. The massage was GREAT and I would gladly return again. My only complaint is that it IS so popular, making it difficult to get appointments, so plan ahead if you go. read more

Jessica clearly new her stuff, made everyone comfortable, and took the time to help each of the couples in the class. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone who wants to learn more about massage. She definitely has some tips that we were surprised to learn. The bestest massage I've ever gotten. Tyler did a combination of Sweedish and lomi lomi, I came out very relaxed and feeling light. I got a foot cramp during the session, and Tyler fixed it in no time and explained in detail of which muscles were affected and why. This is much better than the usual fancy spa, run of the mill massages. read more

This was my first time visiting the Spa Room and I took advantage of their "Deal Days" offer. I had an 80 minute massage with Mary, and it was simply incredible. Mary is so warm, attentive, and skilled. Not only was the massage amazing, but I LOVE the simple and calming decor of the studio. So relaxing, inviting, and peaceful. I forgot that I was in the middle of downtown DC! I frequently get massages to help deal with my chronic back and shoulder tension, and I will not be going anywhere else now. I HIGHLY recommend The Spa Room! And I am not the type to sit down and write reviews but I had to because I want to share how wonderful of an experience I had!! read more

First of all, let me say, Tyler is a god. I will continue along that thread in a minute though, after I touch on a few other, less significant points. The Spa Room is accessible by Metro, with a very short walk (less than 1/2 a mile) down a nice street. The suite is located in an old brick building that many would call dated, but I thought it had a lot of character. The one negative was that the keypad lock to get into the building doesn't work, but you can just call and someone will come get you. The suite itself is a very clean and contemporary space. The paperwork was quick, and Tyler actually asked me questions about what I wrote on it! So on to the actual massage and Tyler, god/masseuse. The room was clean, with very simple contemporary touches. Tyler asked all sorts of questions to make sure about what I was comfortable with, what I wanted to get out of it, etc. He then stepped out into a small side room so that I could get ready. When he started out he greeted my body for a minute and then began chipping away at all the little knots and pressure points that house my stress. I was like melted butter by the end. When it was finished I just laid there...somewhere between passed out and euphoria. One more thing, check out their monthly specials, they are awesome! read more

This was my first massage after moving to DC. I think finding a great fit for a massage therapist is a challenge, so I recognize that this will be a journey. I want to establish a long term relationship with a therapist who has many techniques to use and explore through our work together. On the phone I was specific about wanting an experienced (8+ years) massage therapist who is also certified in craniosacral therapy and reiki. The very nice person on the phone recommended and scheduled me with Stephanie because she was the best fit for my needs. When I arrived for my appointment, I learned that it was changed to be with Suzana. Suzana did a good job and she is very nice. I enjoyed the massage, but she is not as experienced or certified in the additional areas I was seeking. It was not professional or courteous of this business to change therapists without consulting the customer. read more
