My overall experience was highly informative and super relaxing. Alan was very attentive and provided solid answers to all of my questions and concerns. I'd been suffering from recurring neck, shoulder and lower back tension, so in addition to the hour long massage, Alan offered extensive tips and exercise suggestions to relieve those targeted areas. I definitely recommend Alan if you're looking for a thorough, educational and superior massage experience. I'll certainly be returning for future visits : )

I would go regularly, and then when I got pregnant, I would go weekly. I have exceedingly tight shoulders and upper back and find this regular maintenance so helpful to keep me from being in regular pain. Alan is timely, reliable, very experienced, professional, kind and caring, and has gotten over the years to know exactly what I'm looking for in massage and where my regular problem areas are. Due to COVID, our offices have been closed, and I've been unable to see Alan recently, but I am anxiously looking forward to resuming my regular massage... and for baseball to resume so we can share in our regular Nats chats as well! :)

phone convo with my mom as i drove to an appointment with chris:…read more MOM: what do you have planned for today? ME: big plans - i'm getting a massage and eating ice cream. MOM: ambitious. ME: i ran 10 miles yesterday. it's a wonder i am even sitting upright. MOM: [laughing.] ok, you get a pass. go get your kinks worked out. ME: um...poor choice of words, mom. we don't use that kind of talk b/c people invariably make the "happy ending" joke. MOM: [howling] oh! right! sorry. but, seriously, i hope you get a good massage. how'd you find the person anyway? isn't it weird / hard for a massage therapist to be the one on the table? ME: it can be. but chris is a teacher at the school, so i already know his work. and he's GOOD. i've gone to him for sessions before. MOM: ah. makes sense. so you'll get me an appointment with him when i come to visit? ME: yes, mom... it's true: 1 - is *is* hard to get on the table and receive a massage / find a practitioner you like when you are also a massage therapist. (i am.) 2 - full disclosure - chris is an instructor in the massage programl i attended, so i already knew him in another capacity [and was therefore confident in his abilities/getting on his table]. after i graduated from the massage program, i was anxious to try out a bunch of the teachers from the school now that i could be a client and not a student. chris was the first one i went to, and is the one i see most / continue to see now. i love his work, and his space is nice too.* the studio is convenient - just a couple blocks from the tenlytown metro stop (red line) on wisconsin - and quiet, in an old mixed-use building with other offices, wellness studios, a consignment shop, etc. chris is warm and welcoming, with a wonderful presence and even better hands. he does an intake to find out how you use your body on a regular basis, any past/present issues you may have (scars, injuries, conditions, etc), and what your needs/wants for the session are before starting. then, the magic happens. tennis elbow? runners knee? low back pain? tight hamstrings/glutes/calves? carpal tunnel syndrome? crick in your neck? achy shoulders/upper back? you name it, chris can get to it. let me tell you - while training for a 1/2 marathon i hobbled into the vortexnergy flow studio on more than one occasion, wondering if i'd ever walk upright and like a normal person again...but after an hour on chris' table, that's exactly what i did! he does a lot of sports massage so i tend to refer my runner / active / athletic friends for same, but he also does swedish massage and chair / seated massage. go see him for yourself; you won't be disappointed. that's coming from another massage therapist. and if that's not enough, i'll offer this extra tidbit: my mother is the absolute MOST pickiest person i know on planet earth- in general, but even more specifically, about massage. i - her child and a licensed massage therapist - am nervous to work on her! but as per our convo from the beginning of this review, i will send her to chris without reservation, when she comes to visit. he's that good. ------ *i believe he's moving to a new location soon, but it's still in DC and i'm sure his website and the yelp listing will be updated accordingly.

We had such a pleasant encounter with the receptionist, Nicole, from the moment we walked in and were placed with 2 masseuses who were top-tier and gifted with the art of touch. Our couples massage was beyond rejuvenating and serene for each of us and we were truly able to decompress (and leave a lot of muscle knots behind on the table)! We both left feeling SO much lighter, connected within our bodies and to each other, and grateful we accepted the offer to give Unwind another chance. I am so impressed with the level of intention and care that the owner, Antonio, has displayed in making sure that we were in the absolute best hands the second time around. He was very apologetic that we had an off day on our first visit and really turned things a total 180. It's evident that he is passionate about his business, is extremely detail-oriented (the decor is GORGEOUS!), and has strived to exceed the 5-star reputation his establishment deserves. In a world where self-care tends to be an afterthought or a treat, I'm feeling inspired to carve out time to visit Unwind Wellness on a regular basis. I'm so glad I found the right match (and might have to gatekeep my masseuse's name because she is THAT good)!

I booked the appointment online and put down the necessary deposit. They were running a special for the month of January- 10% off during weekdays and it included aromatherapy. The 10% off did not automatically apply and I'm pretty sure I didn't get the discount. Parking- street parking if available. We lucked up and got a spot right in front of the spa. No paying a meter was required. My massage therapist was Mike and my husband's massage therapist was Kimberly. The couple's room was tight so I could feel, see and hear every time my husband's therapist talked to him or when she moved. My husband felt that Kimberly just couldn't get the pressure right even though she asked. He also felt like she took a break after every touch so there was awkwardly long waiting periods. He said her touch was often too soft even though he told her the pressure wasn't enough. She was pleasant; notwithstanding, she just wasn't the right therapist for him. Mike also asked me once about the pressure and at the time, it was okay. As the massage went on, it became uncomfortable. In all fairness, I should've spoken up. The elbow and forearm down the back and around the shoulders was the most painful. We got the massages on Monday morning and I'm still in pain on Wednesday. This is the first time I've asked for a male massage therapist and boy could I tell the difference. The pressure alone was intense. The best part was the scalp rub and the lavender scent (although there was something mid-massage that smelled like mildew). When asked what areas of focus before starting, I mentioned that I wanted my mid-back and arms focused on because I have carpal tunnel. Those areas weren't paid any special attention--they were simply apart of the regularly scheduled program - upper left, then upper right, then lower left, the lower right, then flip and repeat and end with scalp. This was the process for both my husband and I though he was flipped front a lot sooner than I was. Overall, I wouldn't mind returning if I'm in the area and trying another therapist.
