This salon used to be the go-to place in the area, but this year, the rudeness at the front desk has caused me and my friends to go elsewhere. The salon is part of the care industry, but they treat regular clients as if they are intruders. Why the aggressive and hostile attitude? I am very disappointed with the front desk staff. There is an African/American receptionist who was very unfriendly and infact quite rude. I was in a hurry to leave as was getting late to pick my kids from bus stop so I forgot to say ' please' to him after asking him to put the tip in the box next to him,,, so he said ,,, PLEASE,, to me and at first I didn't get it but soon I realized and said I'm sorry and said please but I felt very uncomfortable a B d felt as if somebody attacked my character. This salon saved my hair. I went yesterday for a cut and color and they truly spent the time to make sure that I left looking good and feeling confident. I walked in with pandemic bangs, over processed hair, and the driest ends in the world. I walked out with soft healthy hair in a shade of blonde that made me look like I vacation in St. Barts. She started with complete color correction after I decided to go and die my hair black (cvs box color) practically ruining it . Do NOT go to this place if you are Asian. I called Dessange a few days ago to schedule a hair coloring. I specified via telephone that I would like to have my hair dyed blonde (I have had blonde hair for years and recently let my roots grow out, such that I wanted a touch up). I communicated to the store over the phone that I was Asian-American and inquired about blonde coloring of Asian roots. During our conversation, I made it clear that I was NOT looking for balayage but was specifically looking for my hair to be colored blonde down from the roots. The representative indicated that there was availability with the stylist FRANC. I specifically asked if he had experience coloring Asian hair, and the representative indicated that he had. During our conversation, we specifically discussed the need for a consult, and I was told that the salon would reach out via text for a picture of my hair if it was truly necessarily. They never reached out to me for a picture or for clarification. Right before our appointment, I called again to clarify that I was looking for blonde coloring of black Asian hair, asking for a time and a quote. They indicated that it would take close to 2 hours for a coloring and that the price would be $165 for blonde coloring. When I walked into the salon, the front desk was extremely courteous and polite. However, when FRANC saw me, he was extremely rude and indicated in accented French that he refused to color my hair. He then stormed away. I spoke to the manager Manu (Mano?) who was also very discourteous. I indicated that I had driven here from work and that I had cancelled a work appointment to have my hair colored. He insisted that I had miscommunicated and that I should have told them that I needed foiling. I told him that I had never needed to tell other stylists that I required foiling, and that made it VERY clear that I was Asian American and that I needed blonde coloring for Asian hair. He continued to blame me and make excuses for FRANC's extremely rude behavior, saying at one point that he was stressed to see me. The manager did at one point offer to color my hair the next day but indicated that the price would be $210 and that cutting would be an additional $120. Ultimately, despite my attempts to communicate my frustration, I was completely dismissed by the manager and told that it was my fault for not communicating correctly, when I relentlessly went out of my way to make it clear exactly what type of hair I had and exactly what I wanted. So, do not go to this place if you are looking for good service and courteous treatment. read more

Booked by error on the wrong date on a Monday - as the salon is closed on Monday, the website indicated that we can email to modify an appointment, which I did. On Tuesday (the day or the erroneous appointment), the salon staff calls me inquiring where I am, very rudely, and when I informed him I had emailed, but had to speak later since I was in a meeting, he abruptly hung up. This is the second time I contact this salon and find the impoliteness unacceptable. Courteous communication is a must for a saloon, not just hair know-how. read more

The man who cut my hair was extremely rushed, took no time to ensure a good cut, constantly pulled and tugged at my hair, and the end result was the worst haircut I've received at the highest price point I've paid. I had an amazing stylist but my experience with the assistant/shampoo girl was in my honest opinion, horrifying. It's my opinion that victoria made a simple but dangerous mistake and didn't listen to my stylist. I found out after I could have been seriously injured not just damaged hair. Later, when my stylist was being amazing and fixing the assistants mistake, the assistant in my opinion yelled at me for getting my hair done when undergoing chemotherapy and continued to insult me then huffed off. None of that had anything to do with her mistake or me potentially getting injured. She must have overheard part of my conversation with my stylist and tried to blame me for her mistake. It got worse, she seems to have the audacity to yell at my stylist who is so kind she defended the assistant even after the yelling. I've never asked for a manager in my life, but the next time this happens the client may not be so lucky and could get injured. However, the manager blew me off and hasn't called me back. I've been encouraged to talk to a lawyer but that seems ridiculous. I got lucky, my stylist is amazing. The next time someone else may not. read more

Went to dessange to get bangs for the first time in years and came out with the worst haircut of my life. Upon arrival you could tell that they had overbooked and the strylist who I was originally set to cut my hair still had 2 clients ahead of me. Therefore I would have needed to wait another almost 2 hours before getting my hair done. They were able to find a different stylist who happened to be the general manager who could cut my hair sooner though. The reason I give two stars instead of one is due to the friendly service I received. But, My bangs are completely uneven, way to short and thick, and not at all like the reference photos I showed as inspiration. This week is my graduation and I am so very disappointed. read more

This was the worst experience I have had at a hair salon. Nancy was the first hairdresser at Dessange and completely ruined my hair. I am not confident she had previous experience applying a blonde balayage. She did not apply aluminum foil to layer the treatment and just brushed it on, which turned my hair orange with terrible spots/stains!!! Then, Magdalena tried her best to fix Nancy's disaster. Magdalena improved it somewhat but it still needed further treatment. I started my treatment at 10AM and due to Nancy's terrible job, I didn't leave until 5PM. Think twice before setting up an appointment here and make sure your stylist has prior experience if you do!!! read more

Second visit even worse than the first. Manager is a no show for an appointment that was meant to entice me to give the salon a second chance... Almost a year ago I gave this salon two stars because on my first visit, after consultation about who would be the best to cut my hair, they switched me to another stylist without telling me until I showed up for my appointment. So in December of last year, James, the salon's new manager reached out to me via Yelp to offer me a complimentary hair cut to make up for the earlier mistake. I was impressed that they had hired someone who looked like they were putting things in order, but I still didn't feel like giving them another chance. But then earlier this year I thought I would give them another chance. I reached out to James and explained the challenges I have with my hair and he said that he would be the best person to cut my hair. So I made a 9:00 am appointment directly with him. A few weeks later, the Saturday before I was supposed to see him, I get a message from James on Yelp saying that he wanted to follow up with me about my earlier review. I wrote him back telling him that we had already spoken and that I was seeing him this week. I thought it was a bit odd he didn't remember, but I figured he didn't make the connection between my Yelp handle and my name irl. Yesterday the salon confirmed my appointment both by email and with a phone call. And not a voicemail either, I actually confirmed with a live human being that I would be there. I show up this morning for my appointment right on time, and, after getting him on her cell phone, the receptionist tells me that James is not scheduled to come in until 10:00 and that he wanted to talk to me. Let's just say I didn't let him do any talking. Let's recap: 1. The manager wants to make amends for a previous bad experience. 2. I make the appointment directly with him. 3. As part of another Yelp conversation (that he initiated) I tell him that I have an appt with him and will be seeing him that same week. 4. The day prior to my appointment the salon sends a confirmation email. 5. The evening prior the receptionist confirms with me on the phone that I have an appointment the next morning. 6. James, the manager, doesn't show for my appointment. And don't try and tell me he had something unexpected come up. The receptionist said he wasn't scheduled to come in until 10:00. Apparently "new manage" is worse than the old management. Also, I should mentioned, I made arrangements to telework today so I could make it to this appointment. And the day after tomorrow I leave for a trip to Europe. I had deliberately timed this haircut for that trip. Now I have to scramble to get an appointment somewhere else. read more

Absolutely awful experience - AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!! I had an appointment for a color and cut with Mano and it was a complete nightmare. The worst haircut of my life followed by a "color" job that left me with red/orange/brassy highlights (when I specifically asked for lighter) and left me walking out with darker hair. I called the very next day to ask for a color correction and not only did he claim I was in the wrong, he also WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO COME BACK. I have never in my life been treated this way and experienced this kind of horrific "customer service." The manager finally called me back and reassured me they would allow me to go back and see a different stylist. I went back and the other lady (I'm leaving out her name here because she was actually a sweetheart but just didn't correct anything) after hours at the salon again, walked out with THE SAME color. These people either don't know what they are doing or simply do not care to listen to their clients. I would give negative stars if I could. After getting a facial earlier this year, I wanted to try a microdermabrasion facial, but didn't want to cough up a ton of money for it. So I was stoked when Gilt City had a deal for first-time customers for a 75-minute microdermabrasion facial at Dessange. Although it took a long time to get an appointment for a Saturday (and they are closed Sunday and close too early in the evening on weeknights--good luck finding their spa hours, though!), I finally made an appointment for early one Saturday morning. There is free parking at the Courtyard Marriott down the street on the weekend, so that was pretty convenient, as I find parking in this part of Friendship Heights to be a pain. They will tell you this if you call, but the information is not on their website. Their website is useless. The front desk staff was helpful when I arrived (although I found it difficult to understand their heavily French-accented English over the phone), and I was whisked downstairs for my facial. There is a changing room where they provide robes and slippers and lockers. It was nice, but it wasn't as posh as I would expect for such an expensive place. That is my general feeling about the "spa" part of Dessange. It doesn't feel very spa-like. Maybe they gave my aesthetician the wrong service sheet, because I did not get what I paid for. Instead of a 75-minute microdermabrasion facial (which should have included extractions), I got a less-than-60-minute microdermabrasion treatment, and the aesthetician told me it would cost an additional $50 for extractions! No thank you! Also, they use the crystal microdermabrasion machine, not the diamond-tip type. But you can't get any of that information from their essentially-useless website. It was the first time I'd left a facial not looking positively radiant. So I don't think my money was well-spent. I will not be back. read more

Well am torn at the rating to give Dessange. My haircut with Wayne was EXCELLENT! I love my shorter, more stylish do. But my facial was A-ok. She was noisy in the room. Slammed bottles open and shut and just was annoying. I am not sure about the vibe of this place. Was snooty and rich older money kind of, but the haircut was really good and made up for it. What's more, I had a Gilt City coupon so I didnt pay a whole lot. I'll be back, but only for a haircut! read more

I had a not so fun experience with the first guy that saw me (only words he really said to me was that he was from Iran-never got his name) long story short after he walked out on me halfway through curling my hair (who does that?!?) bill came to save the day! Bill is awesome!!! He curled me hair exactly how I wanted it and was able to salvage the mess the first guy left. Went here following the reviews on Manijeh for a Brazillian wax. She was fab & did an amazing job!!! I also booked in w/Frank for highlights and at last minute asked for a cut w/Wayne. Frank did a very good job on my highlights & the color is very natural. He is a wiz & I was done in no time. Wayne is an absolute pro!!! We discussed what I wanted vs what my hair needed & he cleaned up everything w/precision. I haven't had a cut this good in years!!!! Plus he was so helpful giving me tips on how to protect my hair when I use hot rollers, how to properly care for my fine hair regularly, and what brushes that work best w/my hair for best results.
