I had my first cut with Amanda a few days ago and she did a fantastic job. The cut looks amazing and she took the time to ask me a lot of questions to make sure she knew what I wanted and what I was comfortable with. She offered suggestions that ended up being exactly what I wanted. I rarely leave reviews for haircuts because my hair is thick and frizzy and hard to style well, but I had an amazing experience at Plane Jane! I had shoulder length hair and wanted a graduated bob. Most hair stylists haven't been able to pull it off at all, but Melanie did an incredible job! She worked on my hair meticulously for an hour and 15 minutes and angled and thinned it absolutely perfectly!!! Best haircut I've ever gotten! One tip for anyone who goes- I should have booked it as a "transformation haircut" because I was changing the look of my hair so much. Plain Jane is my favorite salon in the DC region -- my favorite stylist is Jasmine, who I've been seeing for 2 years. She gives me the most beautiful cut and beautiful blonde balayage. She gives me tips on shampoos and conditioners to use at home to care for my hair, and my hair has actually gotten healthier and thicker since I've been seeing her. I was a new, and future customer who lives in DC, but drove all the way out to Bethesda because I was familiar with the salon from 8 years prior when I lived in Bethesda. I needed help with my color and fine thin hair. The secret to color is blending and to make your hair color look natural and Amanda did an amazing job!! Melanie totally butchered my hair. For $150 my long healthy hair was chopped with carelessness in a rushed appointment that lasted no longer than 40 mins from shampoo to blow dry. "Make sure my face framing pieces can fit in a ponytail please?" My hair cant even fit tucked behind my ear. I asked for a mere trim, i look on the ground to 5+ inches off. I don't care if it "looks healthier now" or if i "definitely needed a haircut" I didn't ask for a chop and I will not be coming back. I cried for like 30 mins when I left the salon, and I think she knew I was upset too and she didnt care or anything. This is the second time this salon has done me dirty. You will get a quality hair cut/color, but I no longer use the salon b/c of the method for making appointments. It's completely on line. You cannot get a live person to answer questions (live) before you are in the salon. On my last visit, I was told by the hair cutter that I didn't book enough time for the appointment and was rushing through my service. I selected the type of services I wanted correctly and selected the correct type of hair that I have. How can the customer possibly know how long it will take a particular stylist to get through your cut and color? read more

I am a complete and utter convert. For years I have been settling with the stylist I had been going to since high school (20+ years) out of pure loyalty. I switched to a different colorist for a year but then she moved to the West coast. A recent "meh" experience at my original stylist spurred me on to search anew. Plane Jane Salon came recommended from Popville and I spent hours looking over the stylist bios and instagram posts. Thankfully I was able to book an appointment with Amanda, who is an absolute miracle worker. She took my faded and poorly blended blue and brown and converted it to a vibrant, almost neon, dimensional purple. She hand painted different shades of custom mixed colore and blended it wonderfully into my darker roots. Somehow she was able to seamlessly blend in my silver/grey streaks so I didn't need to have multiple dye rounds and maintenance is much easier. Amanda and I had great rapport and she recommended a few protective products since I was getting this color a few days before a trip to California. I visited Plane Jane before Memorial Day and my hair is still looking awesome nearly 3 months later! The color consultation form is very in depth and once my appointment was requested, I was able to chat with Amanda in more detail over text. I have been seeing Jinnie since 2016. I have no plans to see anyone else. Every time I get my hair done with her, I just love it more and more. Jinnie is very warm, kind, honest and very skilled at what she does. The girl is just amazing! I have very thick, coarse, super straight naturally black hair. In the beginning, it was tough to get my hair to where I wanted. But Jinnie was honest and accommodating. She worked with me for years to get my hair to a point where it was healthy enough to do exactly what I wanted to do. And now my hair is much healthier and I really owe it to Jinnie for being so patient and giving me a good hair regime to work with. They are on the higher end in terms of pricing. They have raised their prices drastically since I first started seeing Jinnie. But I assume they have also grown tremendously since then as well. They recently moved to a new building that is so much more spacious, cleaner and easier to park at. During the pandemic and in the first few stages of reopening, they had excellent COVID protocols in place which I really appreciate! Like I said, no plans to go elsewhere. Jinnie is a balayage blending GENIUS, and so good with Asian hair. If you're trying to grow out your roots, she blends them out so smoothly they look great nearly a year later. She also knows a lot about hair and she's really chill. She's the best! I went in on 12/29/20 for a cut and full head of highlights. The salon was kind and accommodating - and I'm glad to be able to support local during the pandemic. I asked for a a bob and icy blonde hair. Overall I had a fine experience at the salon- but wish that the highlights/foils were bit closer to my scalp as it's only been a couple weeks and my roots already are quite visible (noticed it as soon as a week after the color), and I also wish I showed some photos of the cut (or was asked to show photos) because I was hoping for more of a layered bob vs the straight cut look. Although it's not my ideal look, the cut was still performed well. Overall- $310 total later and a bit underwhelmed. EDIT: was contacted by the owner based on my Yelp review and said he felt disappointed I did not inform them before leaving the salon. The cut is not really an issue as that's something that with clearer communication can be resolved and still looks fine. My issue is with the application of the highlights. I always wear my hair half up/half down- at the salon my color looked fine as I did not pull my hair up in a pony tail and inspect all the under layers. This photo is after two weeks, the roots look quite bad, almost as if I never even went to the salon. I wish they were more intentional with their foiling (AND had applied the foils much closer to the scalp) because how it was performed has left me with obvious and massive roots not even two weeks later. Now I'm out of $$$ and am back to square one. read more

I moved from Miami to DC two years ago and struggled to find a reliable hair salon. But, huzzah, I found it! Tais is my stylist, and she knows exactly what I like. The moment I met her, I knew I found my stylist. She toned my hair from a darker red to a copper, strawberry blonde -- which most stylists I was meeting with kept refusing to do for some reason. Tais is also a gem to chat with; she makes sitting during long sessions manageable. She cuts hair beautifully, and is a great stylist for highlights. This review is about a year late, but I definitely want to make sure Plane Jane and my stylist at the time, Jinnie, receives the credit they deserve! About a year ago, I reached out to Jennie about wanting to try a completely new hairstyle--a perm to be specific. This was my first time working with a stylist, and Jinnie made my experience as smooth as can be. During my first haircut/consultation, she helped me plan out the next 3 months for growing out my hair so that it was long enough to be permed. I expected there to be some awkward stages of hair growth because of how short my hair was at the time but Jinnie managed to keep my cuts clean and stylish up until I was ready to receive the perm. The end result was so worth it! As someone who has had thick, flat hair their entire life, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw my hair in the mirror. I went to a wedding just a week after my perm and I received so many compliments about how great of a job she did. Jinnie, if you're reading this, thank you so much!! The lies! Completely appalled. There was NEVER an offer to cut my hair. No one offered anything. The stylist didn't seem confident with his hollow explanations: " ya, you could go light, what do you think of this color...?" I have gone to Jinnie for 2 years now. And honestly having her as a stylist reduces the stress of planning my next hairstyle. She can do whatever on my hair and it will turn out fabulous regardless. We have done it all from long hair with crazy (beautiful ) blend of color, to layered long bob, to grey pixie. Not only is she a true artist, but she is also a person of integrity. She has been always so upfront about how certain color will turn out on certain hair/ how many sessions will it take/ what to expect what my hair texture. Absolutely love this place. So clean and a chill atmosphere. They offer you water and coffee while you get your service which I love! I've been seeing Melanie for almost 2 years maybe longer for a cut and color. She's AMAZING she listens to my concerns, definitely takes it slow with me when it comes to my cut.. I've had traumatic hair cuts and colors in the past and she's always made me feel confident coming into the salon knowing Im going to receive exactly what i want. I had an appointment today for a haircut with Chelsea. I have really long and thick hair, like Pocahontas. No - Seriously, I used to break brushes in half when I was kid and make hairdressers cry when they saw me coming. Child birth and the era of flat irons have significantly calmed my mane, but I still feel bad getting my hair done because I know it's a lot of work. Chelsea hooked me up today. I can honestly say I've NEVER had such a nice haircut. My hair was long and overgrown, no style just wild. Chelse gave me really awesome layers and made my ends look amazing. My cut was a bit pricey but honestly it was worth every penny. Chelsea has some serious skills and I can't wait for her to give me some chocolate waves! I absolutely love my hair! I visited plane Jane on 8/30/2020 for a balayage. I had never dyed my hair before and was ready for something new. My stylist was Allie--she was wonderful! Very friendly, explained what she was doing at each step, and made me feel comfortable overall. The whole process took about 3 hours total. I felt very safe and the salon took Covid precautions seriously. When I arrived, I texted them to inform them that I was there, they took my temperature and had me wash my hands, and everyone wore masks the entire time. There were two other stylists working and someone at the front desk, and only 2-3 other customers when I was there, and everyone was spaced out. The color is beautiful. Got my hair cut by the amazing Johanna after almost a year of straight up neglecting my hair (new baby meant greasy bun up-do for months). I have thick hair that had been layered for YEARS in the traditional cut that I was familiar and comfortable with. I wanted something different that would take out the heaviness from the back and also hide the baby hairs that seemed to multiply by the hour near my hairline; and Johanna did just that. She gave me cute, face framing curtain style bangs with a soft feathery back, and used some magic tool that took off about 50% of the hair on my head without looking like it. I don't even know how to explain how she did it, but I walked out shimmying my new and improved self, and stopped by every window to check out my fresh new look. Thank you Johanna! Came in for a balayage on Sept 30. I showed the stylist a picture of what I was looking for (see pictures), which was a cool toned blonde color. She said ok great and proceeded to work on my hair. At no point during the appointment did she tell me that she was not able to give me what I wanted or recommend something different. What I ended up with was the total opposite of what I asked for. I came home and noticed yellow and brassy tones in my hair and several areas where the "balayage" was not blended and left a sharp distinct line between the blonde and my natural brown hair. Mind you, I paid $355 + tip for this (tip because she spent 4 hours on my hair and gave me a good cut). I texted the salon to let them know I was not satisfied with some of the blending and color and came back on Oct 1 to get it fixed by the same stylist (they said I have a 2 week grace period and would not be charged). On Oct 1, I told the stylist about what I noticed and she said "I gave you a little more definition like the picture you showed me, but I can give you a little less" (The picture actually has way less definition than what she gave me, but whatever. She just didn't want to own up to her mistake.) I said "Sure, I just want to make sure it's all blended well" and she proceeded to bleach more of my hair closer to the root and lighten the rest. I also told her I wanted a more frosty cool tone, like the picture ,and she said "ok sure." Again, did not tell me she could not do it or that it wouldn't come out the way I wanted it to. The end result was a little better. The hair was blended better in the back but now I have yellow and brassy tones and sharp lines close to my roots! The rest is slightly lighter, but not quite the cool tone I wanted. Every time I get my hair done at a different salon, they are always able to give me a cool blonde tone no problem. In 1 visit. I don't understand why it was so difficult at this salon. This is exactly what the stylist told me when I pointed it out-"umm well the hair is going to lighten up, just give it a few days." (How can yellow tones lighten up on their own...?) And so I did. And it did not get lighter. It actually got more yellow-toned. And so again, I contacted the salon and they allowed me to come in on Oct 13. I saw a different stylist this time who acknowledged my hair color was on the warmer side, but told me she cannot lighten my hair again because it will break off (Not her fault.) Great. So she recommended toner and a conditioning treatment and to wait before I get it lightened again. The toner pretty much did nothing (See pics. She did say it wouldn't do much.) So now, the "2 week grace period" is over with almost zero progress on fixing my hair and I'm out of $355+ for a "balayage" that is the opposite of what I wanted. Now it'll look awful once it grows out. I hate my hair and can't stand to look at it in the mirror. The color does not look good on me. The stylist on my 3rd visit said she would contact the owner by the end of the week to see if he can give me a discount for the next time I come in to lighten my hair, and that he needs to talk to his wife about it (?). A discount? I want my money back! Nobody ever contacted me for a resolution to this? So not only did they ruin my hair, they did not communicate or follow up with me. And I'm never coming back here again. I'm stuck with a terrible expensive dye job that took a total of 9 hours (3 salon visits. What a waste of time.), and would rather be embarrassed and grow it out to get it fixed somewhere else than to come back here. What a rip off and mistake coming here!!!!! read more

I had an appointment with Chelsea for a layered haircut. She actually listened to what I wanted and made sure I was happy at the end of the appointment. She was open to looking at the sample pictures I had and never made me feel rushed. And the end result is awesome! A minor note - the salon needs to clean its hand mirrors regularly. That was the only downside (very minor). But I would definitely recommend this place (and Chelsea) for haircuts. read more

This salon is excellent! Staff is super friendly and it is always clean inside. I go to Jinnie for cuts and she is incredible. She takes the time to get to know you and your hair. I have not met another stylist who takes your hair texture and your lifestyle (aka if you're going to spend time styling your hair - I usually dont) into account like she does. She lets me know if something cannot be completed that appointment and I always leave feeling satisfied with my cut. I highly recommend her to anyone in the area! You know when you've been to one salon and that is all you know? I'd been oscillating between never getting my hair done again and trying out a new salon/stylist, because I felt like I just needed a change. My problem was, the last time I tried a new salon/stylist, I left with a decent haircut and bill, but my highlights were oh so not attractive (super light on the ends and yellow/orange at the roots). I saw Jinnie's work on Insta and thought I'd give her a try. I wasn't able to come in for a (complimentary) pre-appointment consultation, but she happily exchanged texts with me, so that we could figure out what I wanted to do to my hair. I asked for something "fun" but work appropriate and my caveat was that I did not want to sit in the chair for more than 3 hours (I just don't have the patience sadly). I ended up doing a balayage with hints dark purple (no, sorry, I didn't take any pics, she did though). I did sit in the chair for about 4 hours, but she had pre-warned me about this. I loved that Jinnie was genuine (warm and friendly, not fake) and that she didn't try to push products down my throat, like some salons like to do. Instead, she told me where I could go online to buy certain products (that they didn't carry at the salon) that would be beneficial for my hair, since I was coloring it a color that would fade after a couple washes: after all, I was spending all this money, I might as well buy stuff to maintain it and not have to come back to see her a bunch of times. Jinnie did a PHENOMENAL job. I left feeling like the old, but new me, if that makes any sense. Thank you Jinnie & Plane Jane Salon! *Small place, but clean & modern decor *Call way way ahead of time. Easy four and a half stars. Angela Keo has been a godsend. She's chill enough to understand I'm not the chatty chair type, and asks all the right questions. When I ask for not too much off the ends, she delivers without depriving me of my layers. Without dawdling or hurrying, Angela gave me a haircut that ended up lasting me plenty long, and sent me out the door with beautiful, beachy waves in my tresses that put the swagger right back into my step without weighing my scalp down with product. I'm usually stuck touching up my bangs myself the day or so after a haircut, but fixing it to as short as I usually like would have felt like fighting destiny. The free bang trim return visit is a bonus feature at PJS. Cash only tips! Lots of metered street parking in this area if you don't want to trawl the parking garges. read more
