I've always gone to Aveda salons so when I recently moved to Silver Spring,MD I was looking for one that was close to home, with stylists who could style natural hair. I have now been twice and very happy with my hair both times. Kristina is great at color and understands how to cut and style natural hair. She also listens and is very professional, and I appreciated that. It's not a huge, busy snooty salon which I've experience more than enough times for my liking. It's medium-sized, updated, and clean. I was also able to get an appointment easily, and on a Sunday, which is important to me since my schedule is busy and changes frequently. read more

Very polite and kind service. I hit a snag with my time schedule and called ahead of time. Even though I offered to reschedule we looked at the calendar and made something work out for the same day! It felt like a mini spa day when I was getting my hair washed, a much needed treat. And my stylist was phenomenal understanding what I wanted and making some touch ups at the end when I decided I wanted a little bit more. Cristina is awesome! I brought my daughter in for highlights - she wanted pink - and Cristina was happy to work with her. My daughter has very tight curls and she hadn't had a trim in a while so there was a lot of detangling needed, and Cristina was patient and took her time with it. She gave us good advice about caring for the color and carefully explained to my daughter why she needed to trim her ends, even though she wants it long. Great location. Had a great cut. Exactly the cut I wanted. I brought a photo and she did a great cut. However after 2 washes since my hair dye is significantly lighter. Like it looks completely washed out. And yes I used the right shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair. Total of around $350 I paid so it's disappointing. read more

I come to see Latoya. She is always so accommodating with my schedule. The shop is also open on Sundays! She uses all Aveda products so my hair always smells great! Latoya washes and styles my weave, and often times it's hard to wash I between the braids when I try to wash by myself, but Latoya is able to wash my hair do it feels squeaky clean. She's very nice, and prices are reasonable. I pay $50 for a wash and style. Tip: you may pay with card, but you have to tip in cash so bring some cash when you go. read more

Update Alert! Once again Cristina did her magic. I've had the same look for over 10years. Jet Blue black hair and I just needed a change. So I went to her with realistic expectations and wanted to go lighter. I knew that from all the BOX hair dye I have put in my hair over the past decade would prevent me from walking out the salon BLONDE so she suggested a "caramel balayage" look. I agreed and again I didn't expect it to come out super light because it's pretty much impossible. However it came out way lighter than I expected and I absolutely LOVE IT (singing voice)!!! I will definitely be returning in the spring to keep up with the color and even try going lighter each time I go back. read more

Please do not go here!! And if you absolutely have to, do not get Latoya. I was in search of a hair stylist that could color my hair and I saw salon Zoma had great reviews and got me excited to try this place for the first time. I called to make an appointment and the receptionist was so nice, I wish I could remember her name, but she got me in that day. I was stoked! My grandmother had also been a little depressed so I decided to take her with me. I called and they said they would be able to see us both. Great. Had our "consultation" with Latoya, she explained that the color I wanted, we would have to bleach the hair and color it and that it would be done after one sitting. Great, my grandmother wanted the same exact color, it was going to be fun. She started combing through my hair, I have naturally thick curly hair, so I assumed she knew how to deal with hair of that texture. Nope, she started snipping away at everything she couldn't comb through. She told me she was going to even out my hair after the coloring process. She did her thing, put the bleach in my hair, did my grandmothers hair in between, washed it, toned it, and finally washed the final time. My hair was yellow... she kept pushing that it looked great. Not only was my hair yellow, but she had died the top of my hair, not just the roots, but 3 inches after the roots, dark brown. We were trying to go for gray. I told her I didn't like it and asked me to come back on Tuesday, 2 days after to rebleach my hair. Shouldn't I be waiting longer to restore my hair before undergoing a bleaching process all over again? She had an attitude towards me because I didn't like it. She finished my grandmothers hair, the worst part was she didn't even cover my grandmothers roots. It looked like she had dyed her hair 2 months ago and she had new growth coming in. Terrible, horrible experience. The manager was there and did not step in to say anything about the situation. Do not get Latoya. She will also try to make you feel bad about why your scalp is burning under the hot water while washing bleach out of your hair. And she'll tell you you are not taking care of your hair if you have split ends! She didn't finish my cut either, I had to go to someone else to even out my hair. There was a difference of 4 inches from the left side compared to the right. If something goes wrong, they also do not have an email for you to contact whoever is in charge. I had to leave a Facebook message on their page, that they never got back to me with. read more

I really thought I would like this salon. I really wanted to love this salon. I hate that I have to leave such a negative review, but my experience truly warrants it. I visited this salon about a month ago for a trim & blowout/flat iron. In the weeks following this appointment, my hair has been hard, doesn't retain moisture, and in less than two weeks after the appointment, I was already noticing split ends. Without question, I feel this is due to the strengthening treatment (suggested by the stylist) and poor handling of my hair. I am no stranger to Aveda salons & products; my sister is an Aveda-trained stylist in another state. She also confirmed that Aveda trains their stylists on the basics with all hair types so I don't understand how my experience ended up so different from other patrons. I could already tell something was wrong once I arrived. The stylist who checked me in did a double take when she realized who I had been booked with and immediately went to get the owner. I was booked with Jane, who apparently, has little experience with natural, African American hair. The owner--who also took my appointment over the phone--came out and explained this to me, although I'm not sure how I sounded over the phone, but it seems I should've been asked about my hair type beforehand if the stylist had limitations. She continued to motion me to the chair and didn't suggest I book with someone else, so I proceeded with Jane. I probably should've left at that moment. But I figured something as simple as a trim and blow dry couldn't go that awry. I was wrong. After a wash & strengthening treatment, Jane began detangling my wet hair with a bristle brush from root to tip--a big no no with natural hair. I looked over and noticed the owner doing the same exact thing on another client with similar hair as mine so I kept quiet bc maybe they knew something I didn't. Jane completed the rest of my services without complication so I figured I was in the clear. Although I left with straight hair, there was no movement and the ends had become frizzy by the next day (even after wrapping it that night). It is going to take another trim & lots of TLC to restore my hair back to the way it was. Needless to say, I will not be returning. I live in NW DC, but wanted an Aveda salon that didn't charge an arm and a leg (like Georgetown). I love this place! Parking is a little awkward during the week, but I was still able to park for free in the little lot behind the store (even though I wasn't in an actual space). The salon is very nicely decorated and very clean and the staff, for the most part, were very friendly (the receptionist wasn't my favorite). The owner, who is also a stylist, was there and was very nice. My stylist, Jane I think, was great. I got a one-process color, cut and eyebrow wax and she did everything wonderfully. I"m torn. Salon Zoma is the first DC metro salon I've found that didn't seem overdone or pretentious. The convenient location and friendly staff had me thinking I'd finally found a place I'd return to, but the two process color seemed to be too much for them to handle. I watched as my stylist nervously exchanged glances with colleagues as my brown hair turned an awful shade of orange. After two bleachings and two toners, she welcomed me to come back in a few days to fix it rather than burn my scalp. I did go back a week later (weekend hours are a plus). Since they couldn't get me to platinum, we went with an ash blond dye to cover up the original effort. Only charging me for the original (albeit failed) service, the team deserves credit for customer service. There's pent up demand in DC's conservative metro area of consumers looking for contemporary, edgy cuts and color. I'm still traveling to bigger cities to get my hair done and hope Salon Zoma's stylists will take note. I'd like to give them another chance. read more

I'm really shocked to see some of the poor reviews about Salon Zoma, so I'm going to add my experience after going there exclusively for over three years. I'll first start off by saying I am a man who cares about having good hair. Mine is thick and unmanageable unless a stylist really knows what they're doing. Barber shops and "speedy cut" places haven't worked for me in the past; I am fortunate to have the means to be picky about my hair. When I moved to Maryland a little over three years ago, I was nervous about finding a salon that could accommodate my needs without spending the usual $60+ common in the DC area. I've always gone to Aveda salons, so after searching their website and finding Salon Zoma, I figured I'd stop in to see if they were any good. They were new at the time, so reviews were few. Looking back, I can't believe how lucky I was. The salon is clean and well-decorated, in a great location, and consistently has kept a friendly and professional staff over the years, without the overly pretentious attitude found at other businesses. I've been seeing Jane throughout my time there, and I've never had anything less than great hair every time I leave. She is exceptional, and I look forward to seeing her every month. The salon is usually very busy on weekends, and they manage to accommodate everyone on-time for their appointments. To some of the people who wrote poor reviews, I question if they would simply be better served going to a much more pretentious salon in the heart of DC to experience the gratification of spending well over three figures on one appointment. For those like me who want a great haircut by talented people at a fair price, Salon Zoma is a dream come true. If you live in the area, give them a chance to earn your business. Seeing as they dont have many reviews, I thought I'd give my experiance. First off, called the day before to scheduale highlights and while they had openings that day, i couldn't go but nice to know that they can fit you in. When i arrived for my apointment, the entire salon staff greeted me and I was checked in. I can't remember my stylists name (I have her card in another purse...must find!) But she was fantastic, showed her a picture of the color i wanted to get back to and she did it! Granted, i should have agreed to the toner, as it was a little duller than i would have liked, but I wasn't thinking at the time. I have a lot of thick hair, so it took about 2 hours from start to finnish for a full highlight, so she was quick and efficent, i've had some colorist that have taken 4 hours on my hair! All in all, great place, great price($100 for FULL highlights) and great location. I'm definately coming back for my highlights from now on. read more

A hidden gem. This new salon on the road less traveled in Silver Spring is worth the hike. Being in desperate need of a haircut, I sought out to find the best a girl can do on a budget. Enter Salon Zoma. It's an AVEDA salon, so off the bat you know the bar is high and SZ delivered. My stylist, Jane, was fabulous and my tresses have not looked this polished and touchable in some time. The complimentary glossing treatment as a first time customer alone was worth the trip to Silver Spring. But it was the extras like the herbal tea upon arrival and scalp massage that really made me feel pampered. Go to the AVEDA web site and print a coupon for a free sensing ritual, which included an extra-long scalp and shoulder massage with aromatherapy oils. All this for only $50 seemed more than reasonable, especially given comparable salon prices in the Metro area. A completely wonderful use of my money and my time and truly an investment in my well-being. read more

I went to Salon Zoma for the first time to see Jane. I showed her a photo of a honey blonde hair style. I selected a blonde color from the hair palette that was almost identical to what I wanted. Jane pretty much did her own thing. My hair is naturally dark blonde, and I have always had it highlighted so it is lighter blonde. In the Summer, the ends get washed out and turn an extremely light blonde color. So I have pretty much ALWAYS been blonde. Jane created a highlighted auburn color in to a brunette color that I NEVER wanted or asked for. I *never* asked for darker hair, or brunette, or even lowlights. None of those words were mentioned. My skin tone is not suitable for dark hair. It makes me look washed out and gothic. So, I called the next day to have her fix the color. She highlighted it and used toner. Essentially frying my already fragile hair, without making it the blonde I wanted. My hair is now damaged, and remains essentially brunette with highlights. I will not be back to Salon Zoma. read more

I have long hair with a little bit of a wave to it. I don't like to do anything to it, so it just air dries after I brush it a few times. It is hard for me to be really happy with a cut because I don't alter with a straightener or anything. (Guess that makes me lazy!) Cristina cut my hair with little direction, yet taking into consideration what I said. The cut lays nicely and it has good new volume! And she didn't talk to me the whole time, she was very professional! I would highly recommend her!! Only complaint would be how the salon looks from the outside. After about a year of trimming my own natural kinky hair due to horrible trimming experiences in the DC Metro, I went in to face the music. I needed a professional to trim and shape my hair. I admitted to Fasika that I was aware of my uneven hair but I stated that I never wore my hair straight and hated a perfectly round fro. So what happened next was what I consider to be a robbery. A robbery of my 5 years of natural hair growth. I pretty much received a Big Chop. We laughed at how long the back of my hair was compared to the front and I said that I didn't mind shortening it up a little to even it up with the front. I now pretty much have no hair in the back of my head and it's quite disappointing. The shape is cute but it could have been achieved without taking all my hair. Despite the hair robbery, the price, the Aveda products and the salon environment was great. Even my requested hair shape was perfect...just way too short for my liking. I have been on a search for a new hair salon in DC/MD for a long time. I have difficult hair to work with and needed to find a salon that is convenient, had a stylist skilled in working with my kind of hair, and just generally felt good to spend time in. I'm so glad I found Salon Zoma. Gianni did a terrific job on my first visit and I really liked the products she used. I also had a lot of questions about different options for straightening my hair and she gave me a lot of good information. The salon is small but very comfortable. It's quiet and a nice place to relax and read a magazine, so I felt good spending my morning there. Finally it was really convenient. It's right off of Georgia Avenue and has it's own parking lot. I've been going to Jane for over a year now for cuts and treatments. The first time I went I didn't really know what I wanted. I asked for something medium length, low maintenance, without lots of layers. She gave me one of the best cuts of my life and I've been going ever since. She is extremely meticulous and always double and triple checks her work. I've paid a lot more for haircuts in my life to only feel somewhat satisfied and pressured to buy lots of products. I've also gone to the Aveda institute (can't beat $12) but had a few bad cuts. Salon Zoma is my happy medium! I echo all the other comments about Cristina! I live very close to this salon so I decided to give it a try. I came here first to get my hair styled for a work holiday party and Cristina achieved just the look I wanted - I wanted volume and waves and she delivered just that. I got a lot of compliments that day on my hair. The second time I came on New Year's Eve day to get my hair styled for that night and again she did an amazing job. I have been to this salon over 10 times within the past 2-3 years. I actually started going when one of the stylists that I usually went to at another salon switched here. When I first came to this salon I was not sure if the products would agree with my hair since at the time I had relaxed hair. I got an aromatherapy treatment while I was getting my hair washed out, it was very refreshing. I think it was peppermint that was used. And I also got a scalp massage. I liked the way my hair was styled and trimmed. I purchased the damaged remedy line when I was there. I liked it, made my hair moisturized. Fast forward 2 years and I had transiting natural hair. I came back to get just a wash and style. The prices are a bit higher for natural hair just like everywhere else. A wash and style at the time I went in Dec. 2011, was $65. I purchased the brilliant gel to help with twist outs and the shampoo and conditioner for curly hair. I didn't really notice any different in my hair. But that might be because I didn't know what to do with my newly natural hair. My overall experience was good, I would just have to go back more to see what other kind of styles they do with natural hair. read more

I am not local to Springfield but was working close by that day and took a chance on the salon after reading positive reviews on Yelp. Great staff, very welcoming. Latoya came in on her day off to take care of me, knowing I was going to an event that night. She is super professional and takes great care and pride in her work. I recommend her highly. There are no circumstances under which I would ever return to this salon. It's clear that they are not experienced with cutting thick hair. And the poor treatment I received felt worse than the cut. When I booked my appointment, I asked if the stylist could cut thick hair - they said yes. When I came in, I asked for layering to make my hair feel less heavy and for the line between my bangs and the rest of my hair to be smoother. I asked if she felt like the top layer she was cutting was too short as she was cutting it. She said it would be fine. When my hair was dry, I had what looked like a bob sitting on top of the rest of my hair. (This has happened to me before. The stylist starts cutting the layers from the bottom, but I have more hair than they expect, so the top layer ends up being too short and has too much hair.) Anyway, I said I wasn't happy with the cut, and I explained that it felt like I had two haircuts on top of my head, so she cut more off the bottom and had another stylist verify that the layers were well blended (which was not my problem with the cut). When I still wasn't happy with what she'd done, she got upset. Then she insisted that it only looked that way to me because of the round brushing, and she said that this is what layers look like and that I shouldn't have asked for them if I didn't want them. I have had layers for the about ten years, so I didn't really buy this reasoning. Eventually, I asked her to stop touching my hair because it was clear that she didn't understand what was wrong with the cut, and she was cutting off enough of my hair that I didn't think another stylist would be able to fix it. The cut was bad enough, but having my stylist try to convince me that this was what I'd asked for and that I didn't understand what I wanted was worse. read more
