I've been coming here about twice a year for braids since I moved to DC eight years ago and they continue to provide quality work and fair prices (the credit card machine is still broken so plan to bring or get cash)! The interior looks like a typical braiding shop and was fairly clean. The braiders were friendly, accommodating, and timely I even received a text that my braided was ready early if I wanted to come a bit earlier. My appointment went quickly and my braids turned out nicely and weren't too tight or painful. I've had the braids in for about a month and one came out in the front. I've gone to Natural Beauty twice this year and have had a great experience both times. Definitely make a reservation. I don't think I've seen anyone come in as a walk-in since they are always busy. The first time I went, I was in and out in 2 hours with two people working on my box braids. The second time, it took 5 hours for box braids with on person braiding my hair. I've been able to wear my braids for 6-8 weeks. Both times they have been really neat and I always get compliments on them. Depending on your hair, you have may to have a few braids along your edges tighten after 4 weeks but that seems normal for a lot of people. It's a nice relaxing atmosphere. Lalia likes to play hilarious African movies to keep you entertained while everyone is getting their hair braided. I have only had braids once about 30 years ago, but three weeks in and I am still loving my salt and pepper spring twists. Lalia (the owner) is lovely and was really helpful in advising me on the best hair to purchase/order (my hair is all silver and I couldn't find a beauty supply that had any in stock). I found out about Natural Beauty by Lalia (her name is spelled Lalia, not Lelia) through doing a search on Yelp. With my wedding coming up in 4 months, I've up-ed my exercise routines and just don't have time to deal with my hair over the hot, humid summer so I figured I'd get it braided. I called Lalia on a Monday morning and told her I was interested in getting Senegalese twists. I instantly liked how professional she sounded over the phone, which is rare these days. She told me they would be $180-$200 depending on the size I wanted, which included the hair. So I made an appointment for the following Saturday morning at 9:00AM. Fast forward to Saturday, Lalia called at at 7:55AM saying they were running a little behind and to come closer to 9:30AM. I appreciated her calling me in advance so I wouldn't have to sit and wait when they knew they were running behind schedule. I'm always early, so I arrived at 9:20AM and lucked out on a free parking space on Georgia Avenue right in front of the shop. As soon as I walked in Lalia greeted me and said she'd be right with me. Several times, she came out a apologized for the delay and said she was almost finished. Around 10, she took me back, where she washed, conditioned, and blow dried my hair (this is also included in the service). She started on my twists but about 30 minutes in, I was moved to another braider. The shop itself is totally no frills. They had 4 braiders, included Lalia, working on a variety of styles from cornrows, to styling dreads and the rest of the patrons seemed to be getting Senegalese twists. On the television, there were countless Nigerian movies (apparently they're called 'Nollywood') being shown to keep everyone entertained. I'd say the braiding itself took about 3.5 hours, with another 45 minutes spent clipping the stray hairs from each of the braids. I didn't want the ends curled so they were sealed in boiling hot water. I was out of there around 2:30PM. Overall, the experience was great! I hadn't had my hair braided in over 15 years and I remember it taking 8 hours back then for box braids. It was a pleasant surprise that these were done fairly quickly. Also, I like the fact that they are careful with your edges and don't braid too tight. Make sure to visit their website, they have a ton of coupons. I had one for $10 off and ended up paying $150 for my average sized Senegalese twists. It's always a pleasant surprise when you end up paying much lower than what you were quoted. If I decide to get my hair braided again, I will definitely go back to Natural Beauty by Lalia. read more

Had a great experience. This was my first time and I got Senegalese twists. I wanted them really small and Lalia said it was no problem. She washed my hair and discussed my style with me. She was very friendly and upbeat. At one point there were three people doing my hair so it only took 2 hours and 45 minutes for the whole appointment. I told her I was tender-headed and that I didn't want them too tight and they obliged. Last time I got braids at a different salon and I couldn't even sleep my whole head just throbbed so this was a welcome change and my hair looks great! It was last year, 2018. My exgirlfriend has natural hair. She was a about to go on travel and needed a permanent style so she didn't have to fuss with her hair. I had locs for years and would go to see Camille next door at Noire. I live downtown Silver Spring so naturally I thought of her. So I called Camille and she was happy to help. Not only was it affordable, and extremely quick (roughly 3 hrs to complete my Senegalese twists), my head does not hurt at all...which is something that I have experienced one too many times before. Moreover they specialize in styling and caring for natural hair, unlike many other braiding salons....and the women there had thick healthy hair....which to me means they obviously know what they are doing. Natural Beauty by Lalia is my new braiding salon for as long I live in the DMV. I honestly had pretty much given on braiding salons until I went to this one; I like to get cornrows whenever I want a protective style but I can't braid to save my life so braiding salons are my best option. I've gone to at least six other braiding salons in the DC area, not too mention several in other states. Usually I go in with "instructions" on what I want and let them know that I am extremely tender headed. In the end, it usually never matters how many times I the ladies at most braiding salons that they are being too rough or pulling the braids too tight, I almost always end up with braids that I can only keep in for a few days because they hurt so much. This is the first salon where I didn't leave frustrated and with a sore scalp for the next few days. Lalia was very calm, she has gentle hands and not once did I flinch or feel any pain while she was braiding. And she listened and braided my hair exactly how I wanted. Note that the salon itself isn't perfect, there was an odd smell but they still get five starts in my book cause not getting traction alopecia from a hairstyle (this really happened from one braiding salon's too tight braids) is totally worth any smell I have to put up with. A++ This was by far the best braiding experience Ive had. I made an appointment based on the yelp reviews saying how fast these ladies are. It generally takes longer than average time to braid my hair because of the thickness and length, but a young lady who pronounced her name as "Ben" braided my hair in four hours! I received their "normal"size braids past my shoulders and had the ends dipped rather than burned for $160 and they are beautiful! She took great care with my edges and didn't braid tight. This was also the first time I didn't have to take a Motrin after getting braids, as I am extremely tender headed. Lelia, the shop's owner, knows her stuff and trains her girls well. She will answer any question and make sure your braider addresses any of your concerns. Notes: The modest shop is located on Georgia Ave with street parking only but you can pay for the meters, which weren't expensive, for up to 8 hrs (you only need 4 or 4.5 hrs). Their credit card machine was not working when I was there so you may want to bring cash. Lastly, I found the African movies they watched to be entertaining but bring your own device and earbuds if you'd rather watch/read something else. So I went out on a limb on this place as the most recent reviews were from 2010 which is way to long ago for me however I went along with it as it was only up the street. I must tell you that I am IMPRESSED. Lalia is the owner and she took my call when making the appointment. She was so nice, well spoken and very patient with all the crazy questions that I had. Here are my list of Pros and Cons. Pros: Amy was who did my hair and she was absolutely WONDERFUL. I got the senagalese twist done and she finished them in 4.5hrs which was awesome. My appointment was at 9:00am and she was ready to go at 9:00am. She was all about communication whether it was too tight and very methodical in how she did your hair. She knew I was tender headed and took great care with my scalp. The price was reasonable as I got small twits and the hair was included. Lalia was doing a sew in for another woman there and she was just as professional and very well in-tune with what she was doing and the woman's hair was flawless. They believe in natural hair care and natural beauty and you can only appreciate that! Cons: Meter parking or good luck on finding somewhere to park that you don't have to pay for. Overall: Lalia's place has free wi-fi and is right next to tons of shops. Please know that you will never be hungry. My experience was superb and I can honestly appreciate a place where they actually listen to you instead of doing their own thing. If you need braids AMY IS THE WOMAN!!! I came back to Laila back for my second visit on 5/19. I decided to go with small Senegalese twists this time. When I arrived I was seated pretty quickly and Laila made sure to tell the braider how I wanted things. The braider was pleasant and asked if the size of the twist was what I wanted and continued on. One thing I will agree with the other ladies who have posted is that having multiple braiders increases the likelihood of inconsistency and I feel like that's what happened to me. Once the second braider came in, the length started to change (final result was longer than I wanted and not all of the twists were consistent at the ends, some were knotted better than others). I like the speed at which my hair was done but I don't want to sacrifice the style. Overall I loved the look and feel of the twists. They were lighter than the braids and my scalp and head weren't sore at all. I also noticed the braiders used a gel/ grease when twisting this time and my edges looked nice and smooth. However, when I asked for the hair to be twisted ALL THE WAY to the ends it wasn't (maybe I don't understand how Senegalese twists work?) and when I asked for the ends to be cut down more the braider just hacked off the ends with scissors but didn't put any detail or care into it. When I got home I ended up cutting more off and then eventually using flexi rods to curl the ends which turned out amazing. I'm at about the 3 week mark and the top of my hair is fuzzing and I've got new growth coming in on the sides but there are a few twists that are coming unraveled at points. I'm going to return to have the twists refreshed but reading some of the newer reviews has made me a little nervous. I think the bottom line when dealing with any stylist is to make sure they understand exactly what you want, and to check them as they work. My mistake in the past was sitting back and not paying attention, it seems as if you really need to stay on top of these stylists so that you get the style you want. I paid $200 this time which was more than the braids cost ($160) and I'm hoping the touch up won't break the bank.. It shouldn't in my opinion but I guess I'll find out. Personally I really like Laila and wish there were multiples of her in the shop LOL. She is the main reason I took to the salon so quickly. Even though they say they accept credit cards they don't (which is usual for many african braiding salons). Remember to bring cash. Only negative I have is that I went a week ago for a touch up (I made an appointment so they knew I was coming). Lalia did my touch up and it was like she wanted me out of that chair as fast as possible. The braids were larger than the original ones. I had to tell her to be mindful in making my braids the same width as the others. And be mindful that the edges of my hair can't handle a heavy braid pulling on it. Lalia and her stylists are great! After Urban Nature in Silver Spring cancelled my appointment at the last minute I needed to get my hair done before I went to Cuba. I called Lalia and she stayed after 5 to wash/style my hair. I don't know what I would've done without her! She always is very gentle when washing and blow drying my hair. When I get braids it normally takes 3-4 hours. The ladies will install braids quickly but remind them not to do it tightly if you want to keep your edges. If I could give 0 stars then I would. The owner was very nice by phone, but when I arrived she wasn't there. I had an appointment and still waited an hour when I arrived. Then I got some lady who I showed her a picture of how I usually get my twists; I have thick natural AC hair and it's pretty long plus my head is huge. She either didn't understand or didn't care that my hair needs big parts but the braid size should remain small. I was tired and dozed off a couple of times and I would wake up when I didn't feel anything going on, only to see the lady watching the movie on the tv on texting/talking on her phone or even gone; this happened at least 5 times. Then I realized that the braids weren't in right which I thought was just cause she was gentle but nope, in two week, 5 of them in the front came out...that has NEVER happened to me before with my hair. Also, the places was HOT, I was wearing yoga pants and a t-shirt and sweat was pouring down my bad, so much so that one of the ladies who worked their took her shirt off and worked in her bra. They accepted cards BUT their machine was broken so I had to walk and find an ATM. I don't mind paying $200 for braids but I've had high school students do better twists for $50.
