She nailed my color - my hair looks fantastic. She gave my boyfriend the cut he's been trying to get for years! Also, in times of COVID, we felt incredibly safe. I have only lived in the DMV area for less than two years. I have a stylist that I adore and have been going to for six years on the west coast. Since my family lives out west, I would literally just wait until I visited them to get my haircut due to one traumatic haircut in the DMV area. But unfortunately, plane tickets to just get a haircut on the west coast just isn't in my budget! So I searched high and low for a reasonably priced, friendly, and skilled stylist. A lot of people think they can work with Asian hair that is super straight and on the thinner side, but most people can't. So I was unbelievably picky before I decided to go with Liz based on someone's recommendation. For anyone else who has Asian hair -- Liz has lots of experience cutting them! First - I love that Liz is willing to text and make appointments! Being on the phone and playing phone tag is such a hassle, but Liz made it super convenient. She heard my concerns, expressed a lot of empathy and understanding, and was very reassuring and flexible on changing times and schedules. In person, Liz really does try to get to know you and take the time to learn about the style you want. She's kindly honest about what will work and doesn't work. She was very sweet as she cut off 5 inches off my hair, and did a very phenomenal job. It's been two months since I've got it cut, and I still get compliments regularly on it since Liz cut it in a way that it'll grow out nicely. I'll start by saying all these 5-star reviews are absolutely deserved. I'll add mine to the mix! It had been far too long since I had a haircut due to the pandemic, but my poor, dry, unhealthy hair could stand it so longer. I booked an appointment with Liz on a friend's recommendation. Liz is incredible - she responds promptly and works patiently with busy schedules. Our appointment started on time (even a bit early!), and she actually listened to what I wanted with my hair. I felt really safe - we were both masked the whole time. The studio was clean and spacious and we were the only ones in there. And finally, to make it even more perfect, this is the most amazing my hair has looked and felt in years. She really nailed it with my cut. After 6+ months of not getting a haircut I trusted Liz to do the job based on her outstanding Yelp reviews. I decided on a whim to get a haircut and when I emailed her to schedule an appointment she got back to me quickly and we landed on a date. The location is on the outskirts of downtown Silver Spring and Liz validates parking for the first hour. The space itself is something I've never seen - there are over 30 individual salon spaces for stylists. It's a really neat space and I was able to find Liz's space relatively quickly. Liz took the time to look at my hair and asked what I had in mind. I showed her a picture of the style of cut I wanted and she told me what she could do for my hair. I really needed a hair mask and she offered to add one, but didn't pressure me to buy one which I really appreciated it. The cut itself was great, she did exactly what she said she would and I love how it turned out. She made sure to ask me if I liked the length and when I told her that I wanted to cut a little more, she didn't seem annoyed to do (and she had a client waiting). This speaks to the great customer service Liz shows unlike other stylists I've been to. I will say that $70 for a haircut is a bit on the higher side of what I'm used to paying for a haircut but Liz did a great job and I understand her pricing model. All in all, I am going to come back to add some color to my hair! On top of the great service and conversation, Liz basically gave me a color consultation. I can't recommend Liz at Emerson Knox enough! All aspects of my recent visit to her chair were superb. Immediately upon arrival she asked if I wanted a beverage (water, soda, etc) which is always a nice touch when you're going to be sitting still for any extended period of time. On top of hospitality, Liz has a charming personality and can make even the quietest of patrons (i.e. me) chatty. She really went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable. The hair cut I received was exactly what I was looking for...all I wanted was a trim to freshen up the ends and not lose length and she hit the mark spot on. The cut was very quick and efficient, without feeling rushed and she blow-dried and curled my hair before I left, which is something I hadn't experience recently at some of the "higher end" salons I had been frequenting. The extra special touch was very much appreciated and did not go unnoticed. Liz is amazing. I am so delighted with my haircut and balayage. I have very dark brown hair and I wanted to change it up for summer. I was a little nervous to let Liz do my hair because I didn't know her and anything requiring lightening dark hair can be a process (and go down hill very quickly). I am glad I did though! She gave me very lovely light brown/caramel highlights that are so strategically placed-it is just amazing! I was so fortunate to find Liz after a number of disappointing results from other hairstylists in Louisville. I decided to work up the courage to try yet another stylist when I found Liz via Yelp. The positively glowing reviews made me feel confident in her from the start and I knew I had to give her a chance. Right away, I was comfortable with her. At our first appointment, Liz listened to my complaints about previous stylists as well as my own frustrations with having thick hair with varying textures and a color I just couldn't get right. We came up with a strategy for cut and color as well as techniques to implement at home for styling. I was beyond happy when I left with my expertly balayaged color and new cut, and I felt optimistic that I had finally found a stylist I could stay with. She is also very fun and easy to talk to, which made the time spent with her all the more enjoyable. Then when Liz said she was moving to a new state, I was worried I would have to start my search for a stylist all over again--especially worrisome for me since I'm getting married next year and so need a talented and reliable stylist leading up to and on the big day. But Liz came through for me once again and referred me to someone she trusts and who she thought would be best for me and my style and color--a thoughtfulness I think speaks volumes about her as a stylist and as a person. So I think it goes without saying that although I only saw her a few times before she moved to Maryland, I was thrilled with Liz's work after every appointment and would recommend her to anyone. When it comes to hair I am careful in choosing my stylist. There's something about getting your hair cut/colored/styled that releases stress and makes you feel relaxed and zen. I took a leap of faith and took the recommendations of yelp in Louisville and decided to give Liz a try. With that being said.. have you ever sat down in a stylist chair and had a INSTANT connection??? Well I sure did with Liz; she makes you feel so welcome and listens to her clients. After she had got done cutting my hair, I felt like a million bucks! Liz is an AMAZING stylist who listens to EXACTLY what her clients needs/wants are. Highly Recommend! I can't recommend Liz highly enough. I went to her to color my outgrown roots and brighten my highlights. When she did my hair, the roots had a strawberry hue not the cool ash blond I wanted. She noticed before I did, pointed it out to me and fixed it. Anyone who colors their hair knows it's a combo of art and science. A colorist can't be 100% certain how hair will respond to color as there are tones in our hair that are hidden when colored so someone doing roots has very little to go on. Many of us have left that salon not quite sure we loved the result but smiled and went on our way b/c the stylist seemed convinced it was perfect. This will not happen at Emerson Knox. Liz hears what you want and delivers. I highly recommend her. Update Dec. 2018: I'm writing to update based on my second experience with Liz. Wow. I've been coloring / highlighting my hair for 20 years (including some of DC's most expensive salons) and this is the happiest I've been with a stylist. Seriously. I love, love my hair.
