Liz cut and colored my hair and cut my boyfriend's hair, and let's just say ... WOW! She took the time to get to know us prior to starting and really listened to both of our needs. She nailed my color - my hair looks fantastic. She gave my boyfriend the cut he's been trying to get for years! Also, in times of COVID, we felt incredibly safe. It's a private salon, so we were the only two in there and everyone was masked the entire time. We watched her clean the chair, too. Liz is incredibly talented and has a great personality. Definitely recommend! read more

I have been looking for a haircut place for years. I thought all the five star ratings might be too good to be true, but Liz was awesome! I felt like she genuinely cared about giving me the haircut I wanted and was thoughtful about what she was doing. She was easy to talk to and did a great job. Her salon was not pretentious, which I prefer. The search is finally over! read more

I have only lived in the DMV area for less than two years. I have a stylist that I adore and have been going to for six years on the west coast. Since my family lives out west, I would literally just wait until I visited them to get my haircut due to one traumatic haircut in the DMV area. But unfortunately, plane tickets to just get a haircut on the west coast just isn't in my budget! So I searched high and low for a reasonably priced, friendly, and skilled stylist. A lot of people think they can work with Asian hair that is super straight and on the thinner side, but most people can't. So I was unbelievably picky before I decided to go with Liz based on someone's recommendation. For anyone else who has Asian hair -- Liz has lots of experience cutting them! First - I love that Liz is willing to text and make appointments! Being on the phone and playing phone tag is such a hassle, but Liz made it super convenient. She heard my concerns, expressed a lot of empathy and understanding, and was very reassuring and flexible on changing times and schedules. In person, Liz really does try to get to know you and take the time to learn about the style you want. She's kindly honest about what will work and doesn't work. She was very sweet as she cut off 5 inches off my hair, and did a very phenomenal job. It's been two months since I've got it cut, and I still get compliments regularly on it since Liz cut it in a way that it'll grow out nicely. I definitely recommend her - if you have any concerns, just text/call and she'll talk you through it! read more

I'll start by saying all these 5-star reviews are absolutely deserved. I'll add mine to the mix! It had been far too long since I had a haircut due to the pandemic, but my poor, dry, unhealthy hair could stand it so longer. I booked an appointment with Liz on a friend's recommendation. Liz is incredible - she responds promptly and works patiently with busy schedules. Our appointment started on time (even a bit early!), and she actually listened to what I wanted with my hair. I felt really safe - we were both masked the whole time. The studio was clean and spacious and we were the only ones in there. And finally, to make it even more perfect, this is the most amazing my hair has looked and felt in years. She really nailed it with my cut. Unfortunately it's just my cat that gets to see how cute I am these days, but I'll definitely be going back to Liz in the future. I highly, highly recommend Liz! read more

Liz is the BEST! I've been seeing her for years and she's done blonde, brunette, and even red for me at one point. I've always left my appointment satisfied and excited to show off my new hair. In addition to being talented, Liz is also so friendly and makes the appointment fly by! read more

Liz is hands down the best hair dresser I have found in the DMV area after living here for 7 years!! She is so creative and knowledgeable and always knows exactly what to do to make my hair amazing. I trust her to do pretty much whatever she wants with my hair and it always turns out perfect. She is so kind and makes every visit fun! I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a reliable and highly skilled hair dresser. read more

After 6+ months of not getting a haircut I trusted Liz to do the job based on her outstanding Yelp reviews. I decided on a whim to get a haircut and when I emailed her to schedule an appointment she got back to me quickly and we landed on a date. The location is on the outskirts of downtown Silver Spring and Liz validates parking for the first hour. The space itself is something I've never seen - there are over 30 individual salon spaces for stylists. It's a really neat space and I was able to find Liz's space relatively quickly. Liz took the time to look at my hair and asked what I had in mind. I showed her a picture of the style of cut I wanted and she told me what she could do for my hair. I really needed a hair mask and she offered to add one, but didn't pressure me to buy one which I really appreciated it. The cut itself was great, she did exactly what she said she would and I love how it turned out. She made sure to ask me if I liked the length and when I told her that I wanted to cut a little more, she didn't seem annoyed to do (and she had a client waiting). This speaks to the great customer service Liz shows unlike other stylists I've been to. I will say that $70 for a haircut is a bit on the higher side of what I'm used to paying for a haircut but Liz did a great job and I understand her pricing model. All in all, I am going to come back to add some color to my hair! On top of the great service and conversation, Liz basically gave me a color consultation. Visit her, you won't be disappointed. :) read more

I can't recommend Liz at Emerson Knox enough! All aspects of my recent visit to her chair were superb. Immediately upon arrival she asked if I wanted a beverage (water, soda, etc) which is always a nice touch when you're going to be sitting still for any extended period of time. On top of hospitality, Liz has a charming personality and can make even the quietest of patrons (i.e. me) chatty. She really went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable. The hair cut I received was exactly what I was looking for...all I wanted was a trim to freshen up the ends and not lose length and she hit the mark spot on. The cut was very quick and efficient, without feeling rushed and she blow-dried and curled my hair before I left, which is something I hadn't experience recently at some of the "higher end" salons I had been frequenting. The extra special touch was very much appreciated and did not go unnoticed. I would recommend Liz in a heartbeat, and in fact I have already--2 of my friends have booked appointments and also raved about her. read more

Liz is amazing. I am so delighted with my haircut and balayage. I have very dark brown hair and I wanted to change it up for summer. I was a little nervous to let Liz do my hair because I didn't know her and anything requiring lightening dark hair can be a process (and go down hill very quickly). I am glad I did though! She gave me very lovely light brown/caramel highlights that are so strategically placed-it is just amazing! I booked the appointment via text message and we communicated back a forth a bit via text about what I wanted. I liked that alot! Liz even gave me a tutorial on how to use a curling iron! :) She is so sweet! If you want amazing hair, run to see Liz. read more

I am new to the Silver Spring area and had been searching for a hairdresser. I am SO happy I found Liz. My hair was in rough shape, my roots were a mess and Liz did an incredible job with my foil. She offers suggestions and is very passionate about helping clients with their hair treatment. Liz is an experienced stylist and her prices are very reasonable for the area. Do yourself a favor and book an appointment with Liz. I know you will love your hair just as I love mine. I'm so thankful to have found this salon! read more

Liz is always timely and professional. She's incredibly talented at coloring and was willing to work with my extensions. Always leave happy with my hair! read more

Oh my goodness, GO SEE LIZ! I have thin, gray, curly, wavy, weird hair, and Liz is the first person to actually understand how to cut it. She recommended awesome products as well that totally suit my lifestyle (i.e. "We're in a pandemic, why style?"). I've never had a better haircut, and not to mention that Liz is just a joy to be around. I never understood what people meant by "I will only ever let one person cut my hair", but I get it now! read more

I usually get my hair done in my hometown of Pittsburgh. But I haven't been able to get back there for some time and my hair was looking like it. I searched online and I searched. I read countless reviews on what seemed like hundred of salons. I was even willing to travel to Virginia if I had too (I live in DC and my business is in Maryland). After all, I drive 4 hours to Pittsburgh!!! But when I came across Emerson Knox Studio and the reviews Liz had I felt I had finally found a replacement hair stylist. I am happy to report that I did. She's amazing!!! The setup for her salon is super cool as well. You definitely won't be disappointed! read more

Liz is AMAZING!! She is such a genuine person and great with hair. I had an ombré gone wrong back in Ohio and was quite self conscious about it but Liz was happy to work with my hair and make it into something that I wanted and fixed someone else's mistakes! I've been to Liz 3 times now and she is always paying attention to detail, and I'm always happy with my results. She really knows her colors and knows how to tone appropriately. I went from dark dark brown to blonde and I love it! She is flexible and is always responsive when it comes to appointments. Personally, I think Liz is the best stylist in the DMV and if you want someone you can trust your hair with Liz is your girl! read more

I was so fortunate to find Liz after a number of disappointing results from other hairstylists in Louisville. I decided to work up the courage to try yet another stylist when I found Liz via Yelp. The positively glowing reviews made me feel confident in her from the start and I knew I had to give her a chance. Right away, I was comfortable with her. At our first appointment, Liz listened to my complaints about previous stylists as well as my own frustrations with having thick hair with varying textures and a color I just couldn't get right. We came up with a strategy for cut and color as well as techniques to implement at home for styling. I was beyond happy when I left with my expertly balayaged color and new cut, and I felt optimistic that I had finally found a stylist I could stay with. She is also very fun and easy to talk to, which made the time spent with her all the more enjoyable. Then when Liz said she was moving to a new state, I was worried I would have to start my search for a stylist all over again--especially worrisome for me since I'm getting married next year and so need a talented and reliable stylist leading up to and on the big day. But Liz came through for me once again and referred me to someone she trusts and who she thought would be best for me and my style and color--a thoughtfulness I think speaks volumes about her as a stylist and as a person. So I think it goes without saying that although I only saw her a few times before she moved to Maryland, I was thrilled with Liz's work after every appointment and would recommend her to anyone. Although it was so sad to her go, I know she will continue to make her clients very happy with her services wherever she is. Best of luck in Maryland, Liz! read more

When it comes to hair I am careful in choosing my stylist. There's something about getting your hair cut/colored/styled that releases stress and makes you feel relaxed and zen. I took a leap of faith and took the recommendations of yelp in Louisville and decided to give Liz a try. With that being said.. have you ever sat down in a stylist chair and had a INSTANT connection??? Well I sure did with Liz; she makes you feel so welcome and listens to her clients. After she had got done cutting my hair, I felt like a million bucks! Liz is an AMAZING stylist who listens to EXACTLY what her clients needs/wants are. I was SOOO excited to find a stylist that was PERFECT for me after living in louisville for 5 years! She is meticulous in the way she cuts your hair and she's not shy to share her tips and tricks in styling your hair. She's definitely the balayage expert; I was lucky to have Liz color my hair and it turned out perfectly! Being Asian and having darker hair; its not always easy to tone down the color to the perfect ashy brown that I always dream of having. This was NO PROBLEM for Liz and she made my hair look FIRE! I received numerous compliments and recommended Liz to all my friends! I would say any client is lucky to have their hair done by Liz!!! read more

Liz is amazing!!! She is so kind and she knows what she is doing! I have never left her salon unhappy :)

Liz is a MIRACLE worker. She did a colour correction on a terrible balayage that damaged my hair and left my hair in absolute shambles. She's absolutely incredible at what she does, and has the skill set and knowledge to give you exactly what you are looking for, all while caring for your hair and making sure it's healthy and will grow out nicely. The most talented stylist I've ever had. read more

Liz is fantastic! She got my partially colored, color corrected, graying hair this fantastic bright blond. It was my dream color and I had my doubts that it was even possible to achieve given the condition of my hair. I also wanted to let the grays come in naturally but less noticeably, and she achieved this beautifully. She was confident and friendly and put me at ease! Will definitely be going back! read more

Great (and quick) color and cut with super convenient scheduling by text message. Liz is clearly a pro, offering good suggestions while explaining pros and cons of different choices (re: style, color technique, etc). Lovely to chat with as well. Will be back! read more

Highly Recommend! I can't recommend Liz highly enough. I went to her to color my outgrown roots and brighten my highlights. When she did my hair, the roots had a strawberry hue not the cool ash blond I wanted. She noticed before I did, pointed it out to me and fixed it. Anyone who colors their hair knows it's a combo of art and science. A colorist can't be 100% certain how hair will respond to color as there are tones in our hair that are hidden when colored so someone doing roots has very little to go on. Many of us have left that salon not quite sure we loved the result but smiled and went on our way b/c the stylist seemed convinced it was perfect. This will not happen at Emerson Knox. Liz hears what you want and delivers. I highly recommend her. Update Dec. 2018: I'm writing to update based on my second experience with Liz. Wow. I've been coloring / highlighting my hair for 20 years (including some of DC's most expensive salons) and this is the happiest I've been with a stylist. Seriously. I love, love my hair. It's the perfect shade of blonde, healthy, bouncy - I'm just thrilled. At the risk of exposing this "hidden gem," book an appt. at Emerson Knox, you'll thank yourself. read more

Liz did a great job with my hair! I brought in my inspiration pictures and she was able to do exactly what I wanted. Highly recommend!

I cannot emphasize enough how amazing Liz is. I had a rough idea of what kind of look I wanted to achieve and Liz knew exactly how to do it. I usually get anxious when going to hair salons since I feel like I don't really understand all the terms, but Liz made me feel so comfortable. She is really friendly and really easy to talk to. I'm so glad that i found her and I plan on going back to Liz whenever I need anything done! read more

First let me say Liz is great! She's such a down to earth person. It was really fast and easy making an appointment with her, i sent her a text and she responded right away. Liz is amazing!! After growing my hair long for years, I was ready to chop it all off, and I scheduled with Liz because of her glowing reviews. She did not disappoint! I am so happy my new short hair - AND first time balayage. I've never gotten any color before, but Liz was totally trustworthy, and I couldn't be happier. I saw her during covid and felt safe with health precautions. She was professional and easy to schedule and communicate with. I will definitely be back - thank you Liz! read more

I loved having Liz do balayage and cut on my hair! She was very quick in replying to me for scheduling and was super friendly. I have asian hair which tends to go more red when lightened, but Liz took the time to listen to what I wanted and gave me a great cooler-toned brown/blonde balayage. Liz is very knowledgeable on how to get your desired color for your hair type, and I really enjoyed chatting with her throughout my time at her studio! I also liked Liz's use of Moroccanoil styling products - very luxurious! SO happy that I found Liz on Instagram and I can't wait for my next appointment! read more

Emerson Knox Studio is THE place to go if you want the best results! I didn't have a haircut/color in over two years before I cracked and decided to go to Liz's studio. She talked me through the process and simply gave me the best experience (and style) that I have ever had! Her salon is in a very convenient location in Silver Spring- I will continue to use her services and urge you to do the same! Liz isn't just a stylist, she is an artist. read more

I have lived in the Silver Spring area for almost 4 years now and have been unable to find a stylist who cut my hair exactly how I wanted. She understood exactly what I needed and even worked to fix mistakes previous hair stylists had made. Overall, it was a relaxing experience and I felt confident in the haircut I was getting.
