I will preface this with stating I have bra strap length, natural, 3C/4A texture hair.
I'm going to start with the positive first, they accept walk-ins. That was great for me because my normal go-to salon was closed and I needed my hair done before heading out of town. I was told to have a seat for 10 minutes, and then my services would begin. I asked the stylist how long would the service take and she told me an hour and a half. I ended up telling the stylist I'd come back in 15 minutes because I needed to pick up my son. When I arrived, I was seen immediately, but by a different stylist. I was asked what I wanted to get done and I said a blowout.
Now for the negative, I do not feel like this place is good for African-American's with natural hair... more so textures like mine. My stylist spoke very little English and I feel she was too rough with my hair. I arrived with my wet hair combed out and conditioner in it. Another stylist, who often spoke for my stylist, asked if I wanted my hair re-washed and I replied "whatever is easier for her." She chose to rewash my hair which I was okay with until she tangled my hair. To make matters worse, she had a hard time combing it out, parting with a wide tooth comb -GREAT, but then combine it out with a small, fine tooth comb - TERRIBLE. I wanted to scream when she started at the top of my head with the comb, and then tugged down to my ends with the fine tooth comb. When combing out someones hair, you are supposed to START AT THE ENDS, and work your way up. She pulled out so much hair. I wanted to cry. I kept thinking, just get up and leave. I didn't because I was desperate.
She would comb out a section and then put it in what appeared to be a bantu knot. She was letting my hair dry & I stop her several times to ask her to re-wet my hair and add conditioner when combing it out. After finishing the horrific comb out, took down my knots and proceeded to dry my hair wight he hand dryer... I asked about the roller set and she said that I had pretty much asked for the wrong service. I have since learned that a blowout means different things for different salons. Here, the service I wanted is called a roller set. At my normal go to salon, a blowout is a wash, condition, roller set under the dryer, blowout and flat iron. If I ever try a new salon again, I'll be sure to specify exactly what I want prior to starting. Anyway, now she seems annoyed that she has to roller set my hair, and I apologize that I wasn't more specific. She sets it and puts me under the dryer. While I'm under the dryer, my stylist started getting her hair done. My dryer had finished for 15 minutes before my service was resumed because she was having her hair styled. It wasn't until I came from under the hood on my own, that she then had her hair services paused to finish mine. I get in the hair and she takes the rollers out and then she sprays what she said what heat protectant on my hair and starts flat ironing my hair which was so dry, my hair was breaking and you could see it on the floor. I told the stylist to add a little oil to protect my hair, and she told me "no later, I'm not finished." I said "No, you're breaking my hair, look at the floor, my hair is breaking, it's too hot!" She said "ok," and added a little oil.
By the end of the service, my hair was definitely straight like I wanted, but my ends were damaged. I'm a respectful young woman, so when asked how I liked my service by a different stylist, I said "It was okay. I was concerned about the heat." She then asked me for my email so she could email me coupons. I politely gave her my email for coupons I'll NEVER use. I even tipped the stylist that did my hair $10 because she at least listened when I asked her to make changes while doing my hair. Also what was supposed to be a 90 minute appointment ended up being 3 hours.
I will not return here. I'd rather throw my hair in a bun than go through this again. read more
