I can honestly say this salon is some trash. From the customer service to the skills of the stylist just garbage. I came in to get my natural hair dyed blonde and cut into a style. My appointment was at 2:30 but I arrived 40mins early to ensure I wasn't there all day. I saw Susan what I wanted and she gave me some suggestions on color. I told her specifically I want blonde but I don't want it to be orange I also stated that I wanted a more so messed look to my cut because short natural cuts sometimes look boxy and masculine to me. I sat down and waited for her to finish eating which was cool because I don't want a hungry woman doing my hair. She finish eating and talking and everything else the she starts cutting my hair. She uses clippers to fade down the sides and seemed to be having trouble blending the sides to match each other. She then pulled out the scissors and began to shape my hair. Apparently she cut too much so she pulled out the clippers again and began to try to fix it. Then she starts the bleaching process. This is when it got horrible. She applies the bleach. The bleach is falling on my shirt. It's on my face and my ears. Bleach creates what's called chemical burns and as a master stylist I assumed she would know this. Once she is done applying this bleach she sits me in the lobby. My ears are on fire at this point and bleach is on the side of my face. I asked for a towel to wipe my face and ears and she acted like I was bothering her for asking. The shampoo girl washed the bleach out my hair and guess what just as I stated it's orange. She comes over and states she can tone it down and that she made it dark orange. After realizing I was not pleased at all she bleaches it a second time being extremely rough and yanking on my already fragile bleached hair. The bleach power again falling everywhere and she can careless. After they sit me somewhere but at this point I'm extremely ready to go. They wash the second install of bleach out twist my hair and sit me under a dryer. She of course again being super rough pulling these flat twist loose then I'm done this experience is over. Nope she charges me a 180 bucks my hair is probably a 1 half inch long and the second install of bleach is because she didn't know what she was doing. She throws in some little conditioner I can buy from anywhere. I will never ever go there again. By far the worst salon I have ever been to. P.S I got there at 1:40pm I left close to 6pm. I have to back up everything Melissa said! If you have dreads or are trying to start dreads, THIS IS YOUR SPOT! All my other napturals or creamy crack convertees looking to join the sisterhood of the goody-comb breakers - look elsewhere! I came in last spring to get my ends trimmed and a color. Hey a natural salon I thought - they understand my coils and will tend to them with loving care. UH NO! The stylist I was assigned was a whiny chica who griped, moaned, complained about virtually every single strand of hair that gave her problems. This is a natural salon, you're SUPPOSED to be used to kinks and coils of all types, am I wrong? Apparently, sistergirl was NOT used to dealing with freeflowing coils and just dreads because another older salon worker had to walk her through the steps of how to best section my hair and handle it from coloring to washing/detangling. Wah. Wah. Wah. Sistergirl also had the nerve to suggest i get a kiddie perm or "at least get a texturizer to make it more managable" I gritted my teeth and said "NO to all of the above" the only reason i went with chemicals for my color was because henna dyes had failed to get me the hue I wanted. Otherwise, I would be 100% chemical free. I had the SAME problem as Melissa when it came to me being in the shampoo bowl - detangling your hair from ROOT to TIP instead of the proper way which is starting from the ends then working your way up. Did i really have to tell this "professional" that?? When it came to the blow-out to get my ends trimmed MORE GROANING. this time from another stylist who was assigned to handle my unmanagable mane because I guess my first stylist got too tired? Work on that upper body strength, chica!! I was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ready to leave that place. I'm already a person who HATES and DESPISES salons to begin with so having an unpleasant experience just intensifies it. My color came out ok, but still not 100% even throughout my head. The salon is small, housed in a townhouse. There's metered street parking and a metered lot and its metro-accessible. Be sure to time your meter, the meter maids have that area on their hot list! read more

This is a review for dreadlock manes. Initially came here in 2009 because my original hair dresser did not know how to make my soft ringlet curls into dreadlocks. The great thing about Jaha is that they can transform your hair into beautiful locks! They understand how to repair damaged dreadlocks and make them more manageable, bouncy, and shiny. I've had color done here as well and it's always com out beautifully. Very impressed by the selection of color they have. Now, my only issue is the talking about personal business and perhaps some attitudes but people have bad days. My hair dresser doesn't act like this, but I've noticed others. If that doesn't bother you and want your dreads done then should be fine. However, come in prepared to spend money. Different techniques in maintainance can range from $60 to $225 (depends on how complicated the method of maintenance can be), Interlocking is $140, style is $25, and color can be $55+. Really depends on what your getting done. Dreadlock hair styles are contingent on what YOU want. Meaning, chances are they aren't going to get super creative and make a hair-do based on your length and scalp if it's medium or long length (sometimes they have the tv on with a slideshow of possible hairstyles to give u inspiration). It's good to come in knowing what you want. Now, aside from that I believe this is a great place to start and maintain locks. They'll give u tips on how to take care of your hair at home if you ask and really try to tell you how to improve your hair's health. read more

I've been a customer of Jaha Hair Studio for over 15 years and I can say hands down its the only place I trust to care for my hair. I started growing out my baldie to a short fro and did comb twists for several months and graduated to 2 strand twists. Years later I moved to locs and kept them for 7 years. After the chop I am back to 2 strand twists for the past year. Jaha's main focus is hair care. They treat and care for your hair the advice they give is not based on price or anything. I get stopped on the street constantly and asked what I do to my hair. Its not about the style the the healthy state of my hair. While some if that is genetics and my basic hair regimen the rest at least 65% is Jaha. I won't brush aside any of the lower reviews on here or brush aside anyone's experience. I think most small business goes through employees that slack off and just day to day adjustments. I will say the owner is very straightforward and kind. Any issues brought to her attention is addressed quickly. After 15 years. I've had to cancel last minute, been late, called the night before to see if I can get squeezed in and they've accommodated me. My stylist being behind because another client was late is not going to phase me because I've been that client thats made the stylist fall behind. Thats not a fault of the business. I think their prices are fair and in over 15yrs their prices have gone up twice which makes them still affordable to me. With all the development in recent years to Silver Spring I am glad this natural hair care salon is still in business. I've only on 2 occasion used another salon in a pinch and regretted it each time. read more

Where do i start. I've walked by Jaha hair studio a million times, and stopped in there to pick up some products, but never received services. Flashforward- today is Valentines day the day after the blizzard of 2014, and I was in desperate need for a new doo. The hubby and I had valentine planes, but my hair had other planes. I called and stopped by two other natural hair shops hoping they could take a walk in, not happening... So, I walked into Jaha hair studio, and they could take meeeee... An ahhhh moment! Now here is where it gets even better. I wanted to take it a step further and felt really bold, and sassy like i said it's valentines day, so I pulled out a picture of this cute hair cut. I wanted to be extra cute for vday. After a wonderful wash, I sat in Susan's chair I shared the picture and away she cut, my heart is now in my stomach. I've been growing my hair for almost 2years. Got my hair done here with Cyndi. Love her. I just went in for a wash, blow dry and trim (for like 35/40) and she took care of the blow dry and trim and even did a single french braid that so cute I wore it for a week. The wait was a bit long...30 - 40 minutes (even though I had an appt :(; it was a wednesday or thursday night at like 6 ) and the washer was rough with my hair during detangling (docking one star). If you hate noise or ppl talking on their phone on speaker, please take headphones. I just popped mine in when someone started playing their. It's a real chill atmosphere so I wasn't even mad. read more

My first visit to Jaha was last year perhaps in September (2015). All of the staff were very friendly and they all spent a lot of time on my hair (which needed a dramatic cut to even it up). I really enjoyed the experience. However, the next visit, was rushed. They blow-dried my hair to trim it (which takes it out of its natural state and then it had to be wet again to regain the curl). When I asked Susan to trim my hair, she asked if I wanted to maintain the shape, I said yes, not knowing that she meant she would quickly cut off all my new growth instead of the trim that I requested. I was very disappointed in the second appointment and have decided not to return. If the second visit had been as good as the first, then I would have returned, but I will not go there again. read more

Wow.. Where do I start? This was probably the most unprofessional experience I've had with locticians and I've tried plenty. I recently moved to DC from NYC and was searching for a place for my locs. I discovered interlocking 3 months ago and love it. I found Jaha online and decided to give them a try. On my first and only visit, my loctician, Joy didn't ask my name. There was no consultation process. You expect your hair professional to discuss your needs and routine so far and then give her expert opinion. That never happened. After washing my hair, they plunked me in the styling chair with no drape so my dress started getting wet. The best part was Victoria, the girl who washed my hair. If there is courtesy in this salon it ends with her. Victoria washed my hair and joy started interlocking. No discussion. Joy and the other ladies spent the entire appointment screeching about a reality TV show. Joy made it very clear that she was on a time limit and had to be out at a certain time so she never asked me about styling. When i mentioned it, she requested a picture. When I showed one, she said and I quote, " I dont know what is that." She then left me and requested another stylist attempt the style which luckily, she was able to do. If you dont mind loud salons where people don't even attempt to be professional... This is the place for you. read more

I recently visited Jaha Hair Studio for the second time. My first experience was good, so I came back again expecting the same. Sadly, the second experience was so bad that I won't be returning in the future. I scheduled my appointment three days in advance with the stylist Brittany. On the morning of the appointment, I was running 10 minutes late, so I called the salon to make sure it was still okay to come, and they assured me it was no problem. I arrived at the salon and got my hair shampooed and deep conditioned. As I was sitting under the dryer, another stylist approached me and said I was short on time and would have to reschedule the hair styling for another day. I asked why and was told it was because I was late, even though the staff had assured me over the phone that it was fine, and I was only 10 minutes behind. As if that weren't bad enough, she then told me that it was my fault for asking for a deep conditioning, and that took up the time they would have used to style my hair. She said it would be selfish of me to dig into another customer's time when I was the one who arrived late. Why didn't they explain that to me before they began the procedure? At this point, I was extremely upset and voiced my frustration to one of the managers, telling her that their actions were unprofessional and unacceptable. I was offered no apology and no refund on the deep conditioning despite explaining the situation to them. I left the salon with unstyled and unsightly hair, as they had shampooed my natural hair and left it as it was - a half dry messy afro. I felt embarrassed, humiliated, and had no alternative on such short notice. I had explained that I had events to attend that day, and if this was how they conducted business and refused to make it right, I wouldn't be coming back. The manager's only response was a slight shoulder shrug and cock of the head to the side, lips pursed as if to say "Whatever." I'm still upset when I think about it. Throughout the course of events, my assigned stylist, Brittany, never said a word to me or spoke up in my defense. The customer relation skills at this salon are nonexistent. The salon may style hair well, but their unprofessional attitude and apathy toward customers is such that I cannot in good conscience recommend this place to anyone, especially new potential customers. read more

This was my first time going to Jaha, I've always wanted to go here, but I hate traveling to Silver Spring. But I was short on cash this time around, and they was the cheapest I could find on short notice. My experience was pretty OK, in general. I came in on a Friday morning, expecting to be one of the few people there. But there was two ladies who had just walked in ahead of me, and two other ladies waiting for their stylist to finish their hair. So I thought I was gon' have a long wait. But I ended up going right back to the bowl, and then on to getting my hair retwisted. And I'm grateful for that because they have metered parking and I used up all my change when I got there. Joy did my loc maintenance. She did a good job. Plus, I also had some issues going on with my hair, and she offered some helpful suggestions. I'm grateful I got the person I did considering I never been there before and I didn't know who to ask for. My only issues was the metered parking and they don't use capes as far as I could see which resulted in my shirt getting wet up. I would go back if I just wanted a palm roll, and I needed a cheaper place to go to. Their interlocking price is outrageous at 140 dollars. read more

I have been going to Jaha for years. I started out with two strand twists and now I have locs. I moved to Philadelphia in 2011 and I continue to go to Silver Spring, MD to get my hair done at Jaha. They are very good with locs and will not over twist your locs as most stylists tend to do. The folks at Jaha know how to keep your locs healthy and well maintained. You can walk in, but it's best to call first and make an appointment. You may even want to stop by for a consultation, so they can look at your hair and give you advice if needed. read more

The atmosphere is welcoming, professional, and charismatic. The customer service is always on point. Wait times are not exaggerated and inconvenient. I hate to give Jaha a bad review and have a had many days to think about this review. But alas...it must be said. I got terrible service (from the stylist). The young woman who washed my hair was very pleasant, and I regret not getting a chance to tip her since I walked out on this place. I contemplated going back to tip her. In any case: the stylist who twisted my hair (a name that suggests happy) was so RUDE, did not ask my any questions about what I wanted, and when I calmly interjected that I wanted a part , or the size medium or that the twists looked rather bumpy and unfinished, she was rude and spun my head around so she could continue. Twists that normally take 90 minutes with quick hands took her 40 mins. I knew there was a problem. They were huge (NOT WHAT I WANTED) and they were undone. My spouse asked me if I have to go back for her to finish up the hair when I returned home. The lady up front insisted I not pay since I was so unhappy (but not yelling or screaming or anything). I simply let her know in no uncertain terms that the service was substandard. Not specific to my stylist, the other stylists where totally unprofessional: popping gum really loudly, rudely talking to customers, spilling food as they ate in front of customers, the whole place is just off. First the customer service was great! when I called to make the appointment the receptionist was professional and I felt comfortable entering in the salon. I had recently cut off my locs and decided to regrow them. The service was impressive, they weren't condescending to me about my knowledge of my own hair. My hair was too short to loc so they recommend that I get the twist for now until my hair grows out. My stylist Martha or Marva was awesome! She wasn't rough, heavy handed or rude, she just said "we can do this" and 1.5 hrs later I looked GOOD! I haven't been to a salon in 20 yrs and I'm not the most feminine but I didnt fill uncomfortable in the least. I agree with the first posting. JAHA does not have to worry about me again. My locs barely looked twisted after I left. Hair did not last for even a week. Do not go on a Saturday as they will rush right through your hair. I was very DISSATISFIED with the service. Best part of service was getting my hair washed. I just recently moved to the DC metro area. It was important that I find a beautician that I trust and feel comfortable with. I went online and sent a message to the shop and specified what I was looking for and according to their website, I was satisfied with the pricing. After receiving a wash, conditioning, and hot oil treatment, I was the services I want was 140.00 vs 65.00. I was told there are 3 technique maintenance. 1. Palm roll 2. Using the tool and we never got to 3. Although the lady I communicated with claim it was her fault for not clarify or completely understanding what I needed, I guess they figured they had already compensated me with a free hot oil treatment. I was very satisfied with the job Joy did, my experience was ruined with the pricing misunderstanding. I'm a loyal customer and I'm very loyal to my beautician. But I have to trust the services I'm getting are worth the amount I'm asked to pay. read more

This is a nice salon with stylist that know natural hair. I made an appointment while in town visiting family. The person who washed my hair did a wonderful job. The stylist who did my loc maintenance was excellent. I would give 5 stars but when I went to pay I was shocked. There is not a price list and EVERYTHING is an up charge. The worst experience ever! Jaha Hair Studio was highly recommended to me and I thought I will be in good hands. I only wear my hair naturally and what I've heard, they specialize in this area. I've learned very quickly this is not the case. I only wanted to get color in my hair. I have been letting my hair grow for about 9 months and it was almost to the length that I wanted, so I was ready to put blonde streaks again throughout (I had blonde streaks before with no problems). Cindy was my stylist and told me she needs to bleach my hair. This is fine because I know the process it takes to get blonde streaks, and since I had this before, I was confident it would be ok. I didn't bother to ask questions, I wanted them to do their magic. Cindy not only bleached my hair once, but she bleached it twice when the color didn't come out the way she thought it would. She never talked to me on the concerns to back to back bleached hair, and I didn't know any better (later, after this experience I found out bleaching your hair is very damaging, and there is usually gradual stages of coloring to get the blonde color safely). I got home and my hair was breaking off bad. There was hair everywhere. I had to immediately find another salon to save the hair I had left. I had to get 5 inches cut off my hair to save it. What I've learned from this experience is to always ask questions, and to find out the entire process of what will be done to my hair. I also need to find out the stylist experience and if they have ever done before whatever I am requesting. Right now I am in the reconstruction treatment phase to get my hair back healthy again. I still have awhile to go before all of the bleach is out. read more

I was referred to Jaha by a friend who admired Susan's work so I tried them out. I started locking my hair around 10 months ago so it was pretty much on the short side and half locked but all natural. When I entered the salon, the atmosphere was nice and the clients all seemed to be very cheerful and chatty. I was called to get my hair washed by Victoria who gave me the best shampoo I've ever had (I had to tip you EXTRA). She was very polite and soft spoken which made me comfortable and eager to get my hair by Susan. Minutes later, Susan started my hair and explained to me that she has carpal tunnel and she couldn't be my regular stylist however, she recommended I follow up with Martha. As a health professional, I totally understood and she went into detail about how she would make sure I was well taken care of next visit. All in all, I was very satisfied with her work and I did follow up with Martha from then on. Martha does an excellent job with my locs and they are much longer and healthier......in just 10 months. Bottom line, they might not be five star on the social or personal level but the work is great and I'm not tucked away under the dryer for hours unnecessarily. They will be my regular hair stylist from now on. Do you know that awkward conversation you are obligated to have with your stylist? Well they don't do that. I was displeased because I waited about an hour before I was seen. I didn't even receive a consultation with the owner for a decision to be made about what products should be used on my hair. I eventually was asked to go over to the shampoo bowl where my hair was washed by a student that was recently hired (it was her first day). I asked what products she was going to use and I am glad I did because it contained something I am allergic too. She yanked and pulled my hair out. She was not gentle during the detangling process and spent too much time chatting. Afterward she placed me under the dryer in a plastic cap and in 15 mins the owner Susan pull the dryer up and asked me to sit in another stylist chair for my hair to be blow dried. My hair was so dry by the time it was completely blow dried. It felt coarse which was an indication that something went wrong at some point. Soon after my hair was trimmed and the owner begun to splash a lot of oil on my hair. I wasn't pleased about having all that grease in my hair. That was a quick fix for something that went wrong. I won't go back because I now know they use temps and/or the receptionist to wash hair (not sure if these people know much about haircare). I was totally dissapointed. My hair ended up splitting because of dry ends and not being properly moisturized. It took a while for me to get moisture restored to my hair. It's up to you if you wish to take a chance on the salon. If you do go, GOOD LUCK! read more

Joy seemed nice but palm-rolled my hair in both directions, with the majority going in the opposite direction of how i've always gotten it done. THIS GIRL CAN DO SOME HAIR!!!!! I have had locs for 8 yrs and have tried just about everybody from salons to personal homes and NOBODY has done my hair better than TIA. She is very professional, fast and her overall knowledge of natural hair is great. I was shown how to maintain my locs in between appointments and it works for me.
