I arrived at the salon about 15 minutes late (I called and apologized for that) and was told it wouldn't be a problem. When I arrived the waiting area was basically empty. I was told that Ana Maria would come over and consult with me. She did so, but it was about 40 minutes later. I then saw she had multiple people she was servicing and I should have left then; however, I desperately wanted my ends trimmed because I was going to have a protective style installed the following week and I wanted that done on fresh ends. She did not begin my actual service until about 2:15 (my appointment was at 1:00). I was taken to the back and shampooed and conditioned by her assistant. After the dryer went off I sat there for about another 40 minutes just waiting to be taken to Ana Maria's chair. By this time I am livid. It's 3:00 when I finally told her assistant that I needed to be out of there by 4:00 or 4:30 at the latest. I had NO idea I would be made to wait for hours just to get a simple trim and my hair styled so I was upset at this point by how my time was being wasted. Ana Maria came over to me and apologized and then I was taken to the assistant for her to blow dry and then flat iron my hair in preparation for the trim. Because they knew I was upset, everyone began to get tense and rush. At a certain point the assistant began to use the flat iron when I interrupted her and told her that the back of my hair was still damp. Ana Maria rushed over and then instructed her to dry it some more with the blow dryer. I think this is where things really began to go south. My hair was flat ironed, the trim was done and my hair was spiral curled. On July 6, I washed my hair and noticed that certain pieces were still very straight. It was especially bad in the front and on the sides and the very back, crown of my head. I looked for an email for Ana Maria and sent my very first email on July 8th with pictures attached to show the damage. I was never met with a response so I called the shop and was given the email address of anahairstudio@gmail.com. (I did have the emails attached here but Yelp is only allowing me 5000 characters so I had to cut those out. Below is the basic gist of the conversations.) We went back and forth via email where I was basically told that my hair wasn't heat damaged. I was told I'd receive a call on July 14th but received none. By the 17th I let them know I would post to Yelp since they had no intention of calling me to discuss the matter. I received numerous phone calls and emails only AFTER I mentioned a Yelp review. Some of those calls were actually made by the shop owner's daughter and not Ana Maria which is also problematic as she pretended to be her mother and did not tell me that she was her daughter until after I questioned her on this (there voices are quite different on the phone). The takeaway is that my hair was burned by the heat levels used at the salon and to me very little was done to resolve the issue from the beginning. I was initially told I would be given two free deep conditioning sessions (but I would still have to pay for the rest of the service), when I objected I was offered half of my money back. I didn't accept that either because it will take time and cost money to get the ends cut off that are now heat damaged. Finally I was offered the money back that I paid for the service, minus the tip. It is asinine to me to give me back the money for the service, but not the tip that I paid as well. Obviously I wouldn't tip on a service that damaged my hair. Heat damage is not easy to see on styled hair...rather it has to be wet to see that the curls are not reverting back. I declined the final offer and let the owner's daughter (who at times posed as her both on email and on the phone) know that I would be updating my Yelp review based on the totality of my experience there. I believe that service is so much more than how you feel when you're in the chair. It's also about how problems are resolved and if efforts are made to make you happy and/or maintain your business. At no point did anyone ask me to come to the shop to access the damage and initially I didn't ask for any money back, I instead asked that Ana Maria help me with what to do about the condition of my hair. This was never about money but about the health of my hair. I was very offended by the later comment that was made to me by her daughter that I was being "extra" for asking for all of my money back, and also the assumption that I am a fool and wouldn't recognize heat damage when I saw it. I have never burned my own hair and actually don't use heat at all for fear of heat damage, but now as a result of going to someone that touts herself as a "professional", I do. read more

Let me first begin by saying that the stylist Stacy is GREAT. I didn't have any issues getting my hair styled by her-she's the consummate professional. I docked three (3!) stars because after having some of my hair blow dried and flat ironed by the assistant (I believe the owner's daughter--she was helping when Stacy was backed up. I had to stop her and tell her my hair didn't need so much heat.)... I am suffering from some serious heat damage to my natural hair. Some of the hair in the back of my head doesn't even CURL...and I have 3C hair. I'm pretty much now a beer rinsing, apple cider vinegar experimenting, heat free naturalista until some semblance of a curl returns to the back of my head. If you're natural and you'd like to switch it up between curls and straight hair, keep the assistant far away from your strands. read more

This salon is the most professionals along I've been to in a long time! I love the way they all work together. You don't go here and see specifically one stylist, although you have that option, but everyone does everything from relaxers to washing to cutting and styling. They give their honest opinion and will suggest what is best for your hair. The only problem is they have minimal parking. But their service is quality, none of the ratchet gossip, yelling across the salon, fighting...none of that. You're in, and you're out! I had the most amazing experience at the Edge yesterday! I moved to the DMV 5 years ago and I have never been able to find a great salon that specializes in natural hair. I was looking for a salon with: -Expertise in natural hair -Friendly & professional service -Uses high-quality natural hair products, -Focuses on hair health Not too much to ask for, right? Well the Edge gave me all this and more. Upon walking in, and was greeted by several employees and offered tea, coffee and snacks--- they even have agave sweetener (lol). The salon is very modern with hardwood floors, new equipment, lots of space and very clean. My stylist, Stacy, sat me down in her chair talked to me abt my hair regimen and offered me advice. After my wash, I was put under a state of the art steamer (not your regular under the hood steamer). My stylist was very attentive the entire time, told me about the products she was using and did a great job on my hair. She had to leave me to start on another clients hair and was very apologetic and came back to finish my hair as soon as she could. They even gave me a little gift bag with some product samples and a gift card was emailed to me since I am a first timer! I got two strand twists done and the price was very reasonable--- $60. I will def be back to the Edge and hope to make it my go-to salon. read more

I have natural hair and usually wear it in a big ol' afro. It's thick, takes hours to do, which is why I don't go to salons often. I've had some pretty horrible experiences with salons saying they cater to those with natural hair, so when I came upon the reviews of this place, I was excited. I called and booked my appointment with an extremely polite receptionist, and came in today to pamper myself for my 30th birthday. Rihanna (sp?) gives the MOST amazing scalp massages ever and gave Ana Marie some opinions as she was styling my hair which was nice and made the end product beautiful! I told Ana Marie that I wanted a vintage 1930's look, which she executed perfectly! My appointment was for 8 am, and I was taken back at 8:15 (I usually wait 30+ minutes!) where they immediately started shampooing my hair and readying it for the deep conditioning treatment. Everything they used smelled amazing, but not overpowering. I maybe spent 20 minutes under a dryer that didn't burn my neck or seem to dry me unevenly (hallelujah!) and then quickly put in a chair where my hair was blown out then flat ironed. While she was styling my hair I felt like a rock star. She gave me such absolute focus and attention, that I felt like I had the salon to myself. I am so disheartened and so depressed about my hair. I got a silk press at The Edge and after I washed my hair my curls didn't come back to it's former glory. MY HAIR IS COMPLETELY HEAT DAMAGED NOW 98 percent of it looks wavy,( almost like it was relaxed my hair is natural) with a small handful of it in back still curly, and some pieces in the front dead straight not curling up at all. I have never in my life had this kind of heat damage.They also charged me 10 dollars extra AFTER already blow drying my hair "for length" more like ten dollars extra for ruining my life.I lost all my hair in 2014 and it's taken me years to get it back to this length and to have MY HAIR RUINED in one salon visit is devastating. read more

After a lifetime of finding the right hairdresser, I finally found the place. I have natural hair, on the longer side, and to avoid dealing with it I started flat ironing it. Three years later my coils are non-existent and I just want my natural curly hair back. I saw the yelp reviews for The Edge and I made an appointment and I think it's the best things I've done for my hair. Anamaria is such a sweet woman and she treated my hair like it belonged to her. She was gentle and gave me very good advice on how to care for my hair in order to resurrect my curls. Giselle did my deep condition and wash and her hands worked magic on my head! Her massage made my life 10x better and as she did my hair she went through the process with me step by step so I knew exactly what was happening. The only problem I had is that when I got home I realized my hair was murdered in gel and my hair was extremely sticky and a smidge crunchy--but nothing a little water and leave-in can't fix. :) Overall The Edge is amazing and I can't wait to go back in March for another deep condition. read more

I began my appointment request, my appointment, my consultation, and my cut stating that I wanted my natural hair cut in its natural state. That with many other things were done poorly. 1.My appointment began 45 minutes late 2. My hair was not detanlged with conditioner to increase natural curl definition..although I asked and stated for it to be. 3. I had to tell the assistant to detangle from the bottom up and not at the root. 4. My hair was cut while dry, combed, and in a stretched state. 5. I was told to "work magic with my curls at home and to shake it out a little" because their product did not absorb into my hair 6. I was told my hair wouldn't be cut in the shape I wanted because "we don't know if the person in the picture has clip ins in" 7. My hair was lightly misted and then a leave in conditioner was racked into my hair as if that was going to form curls. 8. I was also told that "all products are not made for all hair" Once I got home I had to soak and define my own curls to guarantee that the cut didn't look crazy. Thankfully the cut was decent along with the shape although there are still a lot of curls that fall outside of the shape. I just wish that if they weren't sure what to do that's be stated and either the appointment get cancelled or they ask me how I do my own hair so that it could have been done as I would have liked it. Any stylist should know that natural hair is not going to absorb product unless wet. And curls are not going to form unless wet. There was a lot of communication that could have happened to make this an enjoyable experience. But they were lacking. read more

I would like to start off by saying that this salon does offer excellent customer service (if nothing goes wrong). When you walk in you'll be asked to fill out a form with your information, appointment preference, products that you use in your hair, any potential hair issues, and so on. They also offer complimentary snacks and beverages in the waiting room and throughout your service. When it is your turn the stylist will bring you to her chair to discuss your hair and what should be done based off of the sheet that was filled out, then she begins your service. On the day of my visit everything went great! until I tried to wash my hair a couple of weeks later....My hair was severely heat damaged. I already had heat damage in the front, on my weave leave out from another experience at another salon. This was also mentioned to my stylist before she did my hair and she noted this on my info sheet. However, upon washing my hair a few weeks later my WHOLEEE head was heat damaged. I visited the salon the next morning to show them what happened and the stylist was in shock but claimed that I could not get heat damage from one hair styling (which is EXTREMELY false!). I also did not add any additional heat to my hair between my visit and wash day! The owner was in the salon, but I was told the manager that deals with these situations is not in yet and that she would call me as soon as she came in. I wanted to stay and wait for her but they did not know what time she would be in...-_-. At this point I was so upset inside and the stylist and the owner brought me to the back to discuss the situation. I began to ball my eyes out (which was extremely embarrassing) because I would eventually have to cut all my hair off. They tried to calm me down and explain that sometimes I have to wash multiple times for it to go back completely curly. I explained to them that I know my hair, it is straight and limp when it was originally an afro...an extra wash will not doing anything. At one point the owner told me that I chose to come in and change the texture of my hair....EXCUSE ME??? I came in to straighten my hair not get a perm. I've been to a plethora of salons that pressed my hair and my hair reverted right back! I even showed them the current state of my hair and from the look on the stylist's face she couldn't even deny it wasn't heat damaged. At this point I just explained that I do not want to discuss this any further and that I just want refund. They wanted to treat my hair to see its current state but I didn't want them to touch my hair anymore or next thing I know it'll all be falling out. Again they told me the manager would call me when she came in. ALL I WANTED THEM TO SAY WAS SORRY WE MADE A MISTAKE WE DID HEAT DAMAGE YOUR HAIR, but I felt like they kept pushing the blame onto me. An hour or so later, the manager called...and I felt like she was pushing the blame onto me once again. She said that my form said that I already had heat damage, I said yes a small part in the front...now my whole head is heat damaged. On everything I have never in my life yelled at a stranger, but she got me worked up to the point where I was screaming on the phone then I hung up. A few seconds later the manager called back and said she would refund half of my money I said okay. I realized a couple of weeks later when I never received the check that I may or may not have put my apartment number on the form, i'm not sure. However, if the check was returned to them they never called me to correct it, so I guess they ended up keeping the money.... read more

First, the salon does have very good customer service as soon as you walk in, hence why I did not completely give them 1 star . They offer water, drinks, and snacks while you wait or while getting your hair done which is a nice touch. They also go over your hair needs with you and let you know the types of treatment that will be ideal for you hair. However I rated it low for two things: 1. I suffered severe heat damage. Large sections of my natural hair are now bone straight and have lost their natural curl pattern. For a salon that touts expertise in natural hair, I was a little disappointed that after I voiced my concern, the stylists who did my hair responded with "oh that's normal, it will curl back" (as she desperately tried to finger coil my super straight strands to appear as if the hair still had some semblance of a curl pattern). Really? At least acknowledge what has happened and try and offer some solutions! After that, I seriously doubted they knew what they were doing and lost complete trust! 2. This salon will overcharge you! Be careful. Make sure you ask for the full price list and final cost of services before hand! I was charged $150 for a Flexi rod set and deep conditioning treatment service that should've cost approximately $100 because the lady at the front desk just typed in random prices. I was a little confused after I saw my bill and upon asking for confirmation with the other two stylists, I overheard them quote two different prices to the lady at the front desk, none of them amounting to the figure I was charged. They were in fact much less! Shouldn't there be a master list somewhere? It just seemed to me that they were just guessing! Very sketchy! I got an appointment fast and it was about a 10min walk from the Metro. It's all good, cause you can go to Target and the mall while out in Wheaton afterwards. The staff is super professional and welcoming - beverages and snacks are offered while you wait and I felt like I was in a no stress zone. Never been so relaxed at a hair place. I was sent to her chair immediately and we talked about my styling regimen and products I used. She evaluated my hair, recommended some services, told me the price upfront, and got to work on my hair. She talked me through the entire process and noted every product she used. The atmosphere was not too busy, very welcoming and everyone was very friendly. They even passed out complimentary snacks and drinks as I got styled. I was looking for a salon that deals with natural hair, specifically using natural products. I went to this salon as a walk-in a week ago and they treated me as if I had been coming there for years. The customer service was beyond great from the moment I walked in. The salon itself is beautiful, clean, and very comfortable. My stylist was Stacy and she was very informative. She asked me a few questions about what I wanted, my regimen at home, and recommended some great products and tips. I wanted a wash, blow, trim, and style and that is exactly what I received. With every step, explained what she was doing and the products she was using in my hair. It has been a week and my hair feels so silky you would think I got a keratin treatment. I walked into the Edge Salon about a month and a half ago without an appointment to get a trim and to add some color. I have given up on hair salons because of the long wait times and high prices. Upon walking into the Edge, I was greeted immediately and sat down for a chat about the look I was going for. Ana Maria was a gem and gave me the exact look I was going for. The entire staff is very pleasant, professional and welcoming. I definitely enjoyed the goodie bag of samples that I received and will definitely be returning to the salon to purchase some of the recommended products and getting another trim. CRYING & DISAPPOINTED. Heavy hearted as I'm literally writing this review in tears as a former, loyal customer. I initially started getting my natural hair silked out in October 2016 and I'll occasionally get a colored rinse. Despite being over charged for their treatments compared to top salons($100-$200/visit), I liked the results. Their customer service was okay and they try to make you feel comfortable - 4/5 for professionalism. However, they will continue PUSH deep shampoos & products for additional cost with their coworkers chiming in for the sell. In December 2016, I was again convinced to relax edges of my NATURAL HAIR as it had difficulty growing, BIG MISTAKE! This was after I was convinced to buy their $70+ bottle for edge growth. The owner of the salon even questioned the stylist on that decision (the owner is a good stylist who will try her best to intervene). After this mistake, I decided to give my hair a break for 1 month with a sew-in prior to returning to Edge Hair Salon in February 2017. IN TEARS because instead of trimming my natural hair...it was butchered & CUT to uneven lengths/layers and tinned out! All my friends & my mother were shocked by my hair asking what happened. Typically the salon will try to redo/correct their services if you're dissatisfied but how can you fix butchered hair *sad*? I was back a third time for color and haircut and I requested Ana Maria and I'm so happy with the results I've spent a lot of money on those expensive salons that do curly hair and the results were sad, Ana Maria gave me an Amazing haircut, overall I love this place they are very friendly. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the wait time is a bit long even with a reservation. The salon is nice and clean, I thought I'd make it my salon home. However, my hair was over processed by the assistant, it has the driest appearance and has been breaking off nonstop (which I've NEVER had an issue with before) my hair is usually it's best after receiving salon services.
