Every time I come to get my hair done I marvel at how each person on Annemarie's team is wonderfully skilled and professional. My hair always looks great. I receive may compliments and I direct them to try the Edge! I feel extremely fortunate to have Annemarie style my hair. Her team even offers snacks while you are waiting! What a well run business! I booked with the owner, Anna Maria, because I thought I would be in experienced hands, and I came in excited about a very specific haircut. I showed a reference photo of long, layered hair with movement, face framing, and fullness. I never asked for my hair to be cut short, and keeping my length was important to me. I do want to give credit where it is due. I absolutely loved the scalp detox. That part of the service was wonderful. But my scalp treatment was separate from the haircut I came in for. During the appointment, I was told she was going to "let my hair do what it does," but I did not come in asking for a freestyle haircut. I wanted the haircut I showed her. My hair was very long before the appointment, reaching close to the top of my waist, and a significant amount of that length was removed. When I left the salon, I initially liked how light my hair felt and how it had been styled. However, the salon style was not how I normally wear my hair. Once I washed it and styled it myself, I could really see the actual shape of the cut and how much length I had lost. Instead of the long, airy, layered look I showed in my reference photo, my hair is now much shorter and very round through the sides. It feels more mushroom-shaped than full and flowing, and it is not the haircut I was excited about getting. I also reviewed my receipt afterward. The service subtotal was $278.10, which included a $90 silk out and a $30 length and thickness charge. With the $51.37 tip I left, my total came to $329.47. My hair is fine, and I can wash, blow dry, flat iron, and style my own hair at home. I went to a professional salon because I wanted a great haircut that I could easily style myself afterward, not because I needed someone to silk press my hair. I also stated on the intake questionnaire that I was looking to have my hair professionally maintained approximately every 10 weeks, so I was surprised when I was told to come back in only four weeks. That was not the maintenance schedule I asked for or wanted. Unfortunately, I did not receive the haircut I showed and asked for, I lost far more length than I expected, and for nearly $330 including tip, I left disappointed. I will be canceling my follow-up appointment and will not be returning. read more

I went to this salon expecting a silk press/blowout and to leave feeling confident about my hair. Instead, I left feeling judged, belittled, embarrassed, and completely uncomfortable. I have never experienced this level of disrespect in a salon before. After my hair was washed and blow-dried, I told the stylist I wanted curls. Her response was, "Yeah, with THOSE split ends." The comment was made in a rude and belittling manner. Keep in mind, I had not even seen the back of my hair at this point. I was simply communicating the style I wanted. I explained that I am not comfortable with just anyone cutting my hair because I typically trust a close family member to do so. I also clearly explained that my current priority was addressing the thinning around my crown. Her response? "Your edges are GONE. Your edges are GONE. There is no need to focus on them." Then the salon began laughing. I cannot adequately express how humiliating that moment was. Imagine sitting in a salon, being vulnerable about your hair, and instead of receiving professional advice, you become the punchline for the entire room. There is a HUGE difference between educating a client about their hair and embarrassing, belittling, or taunting them. If you disagree with a client's priorities or they aren't comfortable receiving a particular service, you should still be able to communicate with professionalism and respect. And before anyone points to the many positive reviews this salon has, please consider the negative experiences as well. I understand that some people have been coming here for years and may have become accustomed to the way certain staff members speak to clients, their attitudes, or what they consider to be "just how they are." But being a longtime customer and becoming accustomed to negativity does not make that behavior acceptable. Especially when dealing with someone who is NEW. A new client should not have to walk into a salon already knowing that they need to tolerate someone's attitude, rude comments, or disrespectful communication just because longtime customers have learned to accept it and they just don't "sugarcoat anything". What may be "normal" to regulars is NOT normal or acceptable to everyone else. It's HOW you say things at times and with all those positive reviews you would think that's understood by the salon owner and employees. I came into this establishment expecting to receive a professional service. I did not come there to be judged about my hair, laughed at, or made to feel ashamed of the very thing I was paying them to help me with. And for the price I paid, I expected MUCH better. I expected professionalism. I expected respect. I expected to feel comfortable. And quite frankly, I expected my blowout to actually last. Instead, I left feeling less than and mad that I spent my money there in the first place. No hairstyle is worth being humiliated. If you're considering this salon, read ALL of the reviews not just the positive ones and pay attention to the experiences of people who are new or who don't simply go along with everything they're told. My experience was unacceptable, and based on what happened to me, I will NOT be returning and DO NOT recommend this salon which is stating the obvious. A salon should leave you feeling beautiful, confident, and respected not embarrassed and degraded. This experience did the exact opposite... read more

I really like this salon. They are personable and welcoming. I appreciate the light refreshments in the waiting area and how the staff consistently keeps you updated on the wait time (if you have to wait, that's not always the case). My hair was left feeling revived and healthy which I was very pleased with, especially considering how picky I can be. Their prices are reasonable for the most part and they do even offer deals here and there. I was not disappointed! read more

I made an appointment for my 12 year old daughter to get a silk press. On a busy Friday before Christmas, we did not have a long wait time and our experience was professional from start to finish. My daughter's hair turned out beautifully and I was given a tutorial on how to upkeep her hair before our next appointment. The service was expensive- but you get what you pay for and to me, it was worth it. We will definitely be repeat customers! read more

I got flat twists. Jeselle did my hair. Overall I liked the outcome of the style I chose. It lasted longer than I expected it to, and when I took it down it turned into a beautiful twist out. Excellence the quality of being outstanding or extremely good. "a center of beauty excellence" From the moment you schedule your appointment, you are treated with the upmost respect. Every client receives pampering to the point you feel you have a personal beauty consultant. Recently I posted a review referring to my most recent visit. Because I believed I was corresponding directly to Annamarie, I spoke personally to my stylist, not realizing it was public. But that's the way the entire team makes you feel. You believe you have a personal connection. Everyone wants to feel special, unique and important. That's how you will feel at The Edge Hair salon. read more

Y'all, I finally found the best salon in Silver Spring! After having a few bad experiences in the area, I am SO excited to have found a new salon to call home. I just got an angled bob done by Anamaria and she is fantastic! She is very thorough, kind, and talented. I arrived at the salon about 15 minutes late (I called and apologized for that) and was told it wouldn't be a problem. When I arrived the waiting area was basically empty. I was told that Ana Maria would come over and consult with me. She did so, but it was about 40 minutes later. I then saw she had multiple people she was servicing and I should have left then; however, I desperately wanted my ends trimmed because I was going to have a protective style installed the following week and I wanted that done on fresh ends. She did not begin my actual service until about 2:15 (my appointment was at 1:00). I was taken to the back and shampooed and conditioned by her assistant. After the dryer went off I sat there for about another 40 minutes just waiting to be taken to Ana Maria's chair. By this time I am livid. It's 3:00 when I finally told her assistant that I needed to be out of there by 4:00 or 4:30 at the latest. I had NO idea I would be made to wait for hours just to get a simple trim and my hair styled so I was upset at this point by how my time was being wasted. Ana Maria came over to me and apologized and then I was taken to the assistant for her to blow dry and then flat iron my hair in preparation for the trim. Because they knew I was upset, everyone began to get tense and rush. At a certain point the assistant began to use the flat iron when I interrupted her and told her that the back of my hair was still damp. Ana Maria rushed over and then instructed her to dry it some more with the blow dryer. I think this is where things really began to go south. My hair was flat ironed, the trim was done and my hair was spiral curled. On July 6, I washed my hair and noticed that certain pieces were still very straight. It was especially bad in the front and on the sides and the very back, crown of my head. I looked for an email for Ana Maria and sent my very first email on July 8th with pictures attached to show the damage. I was never met with a response so I called the shop and was given the email address of anahairstudio@gmail.com. (I did have the emails attached here but Yelp is only allowing me 5000 characters so I had to cut those out. Below is the basic gist of the conversations.) We went back and forth via email where I was basically told that my hair wasn't heat damaged. I was told I'd receive a call on July 14th but received none. By the 17th I let them know I would post to Yelp since they had no intention of calling me to discuss the matter. I received numerous phone calls and emails only AFTER I mentioned a Yelp review. Some of those calls were actually made by the shop owner's daughter and not Ana Maria which is also problematic as she pretended to be her mother and did not tell me that she was her daughter until after I questioned her on this (there voices are quite different on the phone). The takeaway is that my hair was burned by the heat levels used at the salon and to me very little was done to resolve the issue from the beginning. I was initially told I would be given two free deep conditioning sessions (but I would still have to pay for the rest of the service), when I objected I was offered half of my money back. I didn't accept that either because it will take time and cost money to get the ends cut off that are now heat damaged. Finally I was offered the money back that I paid for the service, minus the tip. It is asinine to me to give me back the money for the service, but not the tip that I paid as well. Obviously I wouldn't tip on a service that damaged my hair. Heat damage is not easy to see on styled hair...rather it has to be wet to see that the curls are not reverting back. I declined the final offer and let the owner's daughter (who at times posed as her both on email and on the phone) know that I would be updating my Yelp review based on the totality of my experience there. I believe that service is so much more than how you feel when you're in the chair. It's also about how problems are resolved and if efforts are made to make you happy and/or maintain your business. At no point did anyone ask me to come to the shop to access the damage and initially I didn't ask for any money back, I instead asked that Ana Maria help me with what to do about the condition of my hair. This was never about money but about the health of my hair. I was very offended by the later comment that was made to me by her daughter that I was being "extra" for asking for all of my money back, and also the assumption that I am a fool and wouldn't recognize heat damage when I saw it. I have never burned my own hair and actually don't use heat at all for fear of heat damage, but now as a result of going to someone that touts herself as a "professional", I do. read more

Let me first begin by saying that the stylist Stacy is GREAT. I didn't have any issues getting my hair styled by her-she's the consummate professional. I docked three (3!) stars because after having some of my hair blow dried and flat ironed by the assistant (I believe the owner's daughter--she was helping when Stacy was backed up. I had to stop her and tell her my hair didn't need so much heat.)... I am suffering from some serious heat damage to my natural hair. Some of the hair in the back of my head doesn't even CURL...and I have 3C hair. I'm pretty much now a beer rinsing, apple cider vinegar experimenting, heat free naturalista until some semblance of a curl returns to the back of my head. If you're natural and you'd like to switch it up between curls and straight hair, keep the assistant far away from your strands. read more

I've been in the DMV for almost 3 years. It is very expensive to get your hair done, and even worse, finding a quality stylist in the area that is worth spending the money! I was on the verge of giving up and just going to Atlanta just to get my hair done...but I found this salon, and they have given me the last little but of hope! This salon is the most professionals along I've been to in a long time! I love the way they all work together. You don't go here and see specifically one stylist, although you have that option, but everyone does everything from relaxers to washing to cutting and styling. They give their honest opinion and will suggest what is best for your hair. The only problem is they have minimal parking. But their service is quality, none of the ratchet gossip, yelling across the salon, fighting...none of that. You're in, and you're out! It's nothing worse than wasting a whole day at a salon, come to Edge, you will leave very happy! read more

I had the most amazing experience at the Edge yesterday! I moved to the DMV 5 years ago and I have never been able to find a great salon that specializes in natural hair. I was looking for a salon with: -Expertise in natural hair -Friendly & professional service -Uses high-quality natural hair products, -Focuses on hair health Not too much to ask for, right? Well the Edge gave me all this and more. Upon walking in, and was greeted by several employees and offered tea, coffee and snacks--- they even have agave sweetener (lol). The salon is very modern with hardwood floors, new equipment, lots of space and very clean. My stylist, Stacy, sat me down in her chair talked to me abt my hair regimen and offered me advice. After my wash, I was put under a state of the art steamer (not your regular under the hood steamer). My stylist was very attentive the entire time, told me about the products she was using and did a great job on my hair. She had to leave me to start on another clients hair and was very apologetic and came back to finish my hair as soon as she could. They even gave me a little gift bag with some product samples and a gift card was emailed to me since I am a first timer! I got two strand twists done and the price was very reasonable--- $60. I will def be back to the Edge and hope to make it my go-to salon. read more

I have natural hair and usually wear it in a big ol' afro. It's thick, takes hours to do, which is why I don't go to salons often. I've had some pretty horrible experiences with salons saying they cater to those with natural hair, so when I came upon the reviews of this place, I was excited. I called and booked my appointment with an extremely polite receptionist, and came in today to pamper myself for my 30th birthday. Rihanna (sp?) gives the MOST amazing scalp massages ever and gave Ana Marie some opinions as she was styling my hair which was nice and made the end product beautiful! I told Ana Marie that I wanted a vintage 1930's look, which she executed perfectly! My appointment was for 8 am, and I was taken back at 8:15 (I usually wait 30+ minutes!) where they immediately started shampooing my hair and readying it for the deep conditioning treatment. Everything they used smelled amazing, but not overpowering. I maybe spent 20 minutes under a dryer that didn't burn my neck or seem to dry me unevenly (hallelujah!) and then quickly put in a chair where my hair was blown out then flat ironed. While she was styling my hair I felt like a rock star. She gave me such absolute focus and attention, that I felt like I had the salon to myself. The salon is clean, well lit, and everyone is very nice. I've finally found my go to salon. read more

After a lifetime of finding the right hairdresser, I finally found the place. I have natural hair, on the longer side, and to avoid dealing with it I started flat ironing it. Three years later my coils are non-existent and I just want my natural curly hair back. I saw the yelp reviews for The Edge and I made an appointment and I think it's the best things I've done for my hair. Anamaria is such a sweet woman and she treated my hair like it belonged to her. She was gentle and gave me very good advice on how to care for my hair in order to resurrect my curls. Giselle did my deep condition and wash and her hands worked magic on my head! Her massage made my life 10x better and as she did my hair she went through the process with me step by step so I knew exactly what was happening. The only problem I had is that when I got home I realized my hair was murdered in gel and my hair was extremely sticky and a smidge crunchy--but nothing a little water and leave-in can't fix. :) Overall The Edge is amazing and I can't wait to go back in March for another deep condition. read more

This place had me at hello! I was first impressed by my initial interaction with the staff. Their professionalism was outstanding. They were pleasant and accommodating while I waited for my consultation by offering snacks & refreshments. I also admired the look of the salon. It's a beautiful place to get pampered. Anamaria is the most proficient stylist I have ever encountered. She was quick and precise with her styling. I could tell that she loved her craft. I had my natural hair cut and styled and I was absolutely pleased with the outcome. I'm usually apprehensive with stylist cutting my hair but Anamaria made me feel confident. I will not only return but I highly recommend this place. read more

I am so disheartened and so depressed about my hair. I got a silk press at The Edge and after I washed my hair my curls didn't come back to it's former glory. MY HAIR IS COMPLETELY HEAT DAMAGED NOW 98 percent of it looks wavy,( almost like it was relaxed my hair is natural) with a small handful of it in back still curly, and some pieces in the front dead straight not curling up at all. I have never in my life had this kind of heat damage. They also charged me 10 dollars extra AFTER already blow drying my hair "for length" more like ten dollars extra for ruining my life.I lost all my hair in 2014 and it's taken me years to get it back to this length and to have MY HAIR RUINED in one salon visit is devastating. read more

I would like to start off by saying that this salon does offer excellent customer service (if nothing goes wrong). When you walk in you'll be asked to fill out a form with your information, appointment preference, products that you use in your hair, any potential hair issues, and so on. They also offer complimentary snacks and beverages in the waiting room and throughout your service. When it is your turn the stylist will bring you to her chair to discuss your hair and what should be done based off of the sheet that was filled out, then she begins your service. On the day of my visit everything went great! until I tried to wash my hair a couple of weeks later....My hair was severely heat damaged. I already had heat damage in the front, on my weave leave out from another experience at another salon. This was also mentioned to my stylist before she did my hair and she noted this on my info sheet. However, upon washing my hair a few weeks later my WHOLEEE head was heat damaged. I visited the salon the next morning to show them what happened and the stylist was in shock but claimed that I could not get heat damage from one hair styling (which is EXTREMELY false!). I also did not add any additional heat to my hair between my visit and wash day! The owner was in the salon, but I was told the manager that deals with these situations is not in yet and that she would call me as soon as she came in. I wanted to stay and wait for her but they did not know what time she would be in...-_-. At this point I was so upset inside and the stylist and the owner brought me to the back to discuss the situation. I began to ball my eyes out (which was extremely embarrassing) because I would eventually have to cut all my hair off. They tried to calm me down and explain that sometimes I have to wash multiple times for it to go back completely curly. I explained to them that I know my hair, it is straight and limp when it was originally an afro...an extra wash will not doing anything. At one point the owner told me that I chose to come in and change the texture of my hair....EXCUSE ME??? I came in to straighten my hair not get a perm. I've been to a plethora of salons that pressed my hair and my hair reverted right back! I even showed them the current state of my hair and from the look on the stylist's face she couldn't even deny it wasn't heat damaged. At this point I just explained that I do not want to discuss this any further and that I just want refund. They wanted to treat my hair to see its current state but I didn't want them to touch my hair anymore or next thing I know it'll all be falling out. Again they told me the manager would call me when she came in. ALL I WANTED THEM TO SAY WAS SORRY WE MADE A MISTAKE WE DID HEAT DAMAGE YOUR HAIR, but I felt like they kept pushing the blame onto me. An hour or so later, the manager called...and I felt like she was pushing the blame onto me once again. She said that my form said that I already had heat damage, I said yes a small part in the front...now my whole head is heat damaged. On everything I have never in my life yelled at a stranger, but she got me worked up to the point where I was screaming on the phone then I hung up. A few seconds later the manager called back and said she would refund half of my money I said okay. I realized a couple of weeks later when I never received the check that I may or may not have put my apartment number on the form, i'm not sure. However, if the check was returned to them they never called me to correct it, so I guess they ended up keeping the money.... read more

I took my daughter here for the first time and was very impressed. The salon is very modern and cool looking. Everyone on the staff was friendly and welcoming. Tara did an excellent job on my daughter's cornrows! She was very thorough from beginning to end. I had my first visit to the Edge today and I would definitely go back. The location is conveniently in downtown Wheaton and I was able to find a spot in the parking lot. The studio is clean and the people were very friendly. I didn't have to wait to be served, which I deeply appreciate. I hate when salons overbook! Gladly that didn't happen with me. First, the salon does have very good customer service as soon as you walk in, hence why I did not completely give them 1 star . They offer water, drinks, and snacks while you wait or while getting your hair done which is a nice touch. They also go over your hair needs with you and let you know the types of treatment that will be ideal for you hair. However I rated it low for two things: 1. I suffered severe heat damage. Large sections of my natural hair are now bone straight and have lost their natural curl pattern. For a salon that touts expertise in natural hair, I was a little disappointed that after I voiced my concern, the stylists who did my hair responded with "oh that's normal, it will curl back" (as she desperately tried to finger coil my super straight strands to appear as if the hair still had some semblance of a curl pattern). Really? At least acknowledge what has happened and try and offer some solutions! After that, I seriously doubted they knew what they were doing and lost complete trust! 2. This salon will overcharge you! Be careful. Make sure you ask for the full price list and final cost of services before hand! I was charged $150 for a Flexi rod set and deep conditioning treatment service that should've cost approximately $100 because the lady at the front desk just typed in random prices. I was a little confused after I saw my bill and upon asking for confirmation with the other two stylists, I overheard them quote two different prices to the lady at the front desk, none of them amounting to the figure I was charged. They were in fact much less! Shouldn't there be a master list somewhere? It just seemed to me that they were just guessing! Very sketchy! Anyway to conclude, the stylist is good with styling flat ironed hair and stuff but go at your own risk if you have natural hair. read more

I began my appointment request, my appointment, my consultation, and my cut stating that I wanted my natural hair cut in its natural state. That with many other things were done poorly. 1.My appointment began 45 minutes late 2. My hair was not detanlged with conditioner to increase natural curl definition..although I asked and stated for it to be. 3. I had to tell the assistant to detangle from the bottom up and not at the root. 4. My hair was cut while dry, combed, and in a stretched state. 5. I was told to "work magic with my curls at home and to shake it out a little" because their product did not absorb into my hair 6. I was told my hair wouldn't be cut in the shape I wanted because "we don't know if the person in the picture has clip ins in" 7. My hair was lightly misted and then a leave in conditioner was racked into my hair as if that was going to form curls. 8. I was also told that "all products are not made for all hair" Once I got home I had to soak and define my own curls to guarantee that the cut didn't look crazy. Thankfully the cut was decent along with the shape although there are still a lot of curls that fall outside of the shape. I just wish that if they weren't sure what to do that's be stated and either the appointment get cancelled or they ask me how I do my own hair so that it could have been done as I would have liked it. Any stylist should know that natural hair is not going to absorb product unless wet. And curls are not going to form unless wet. There was a lot of communication that could have happened to make this an enjoyable experience. But they were lacking. read more

I went natural in order to avoid hair salons, but it's spring so I got antsy for a change. I went here after Googling places that deal with natural hair and I'm so happy I went. I got an appointment fast and it was about a 10min walk from the Metro. It's all good, cause you can go to Target and the mall while out in Wheaton afterwards. The staff is super professional and welcoming - beverages and snacks are offered while you wait and I felt like I was in a no stress zone. Never been so relaxed at a hair place. AnaMaria is brilliant! You can truly trust her with your hair. While I was there she took care of men, women, kids, white and black people - and they all looked great! All with different dos. The lady is an artist, so go there before other people find out and it's impossible to get an appt. I've never been so happy with a salon experience. read more

This is probably the best salon I've been to! From first walk-in, I was greeted warmly and given a consultation by my stylist. I was sent to her chair immediately and we talked about my styling regimen and products I used. She evaluated my hair, recommended some services, told me the price upfront, and got to work on my hair. She talked me through the entire process and noted every product she used. The atmosphere was not too busy, very welcoming and everyone was very friendly. They even passed out complimentary snacks and drinks as I got styled. As a woman with very thick, long and natural hair, I was nervous trusting a stylist to have the patience to tackle my hair, but she had no problem! I was and am very satisfied with the service, products and environment of this salon, and I look forward to going back again and again! read more

I was looking for a salon that deals with natural hair, specifically using natural products. I went to this salon as a walk-in a week ago and they treated me as if I had been coming there for years. The customer service was beyond great from the moment I walked in. The salon itself is beautiful, clean, and very comfortable. My stylist was Stacy and she was very informative. She asked me a few questions about what I wanted, my regimen at home, and recommended some great products and tips. I wanted a wash, blow, trim, and style and that is exactly what I received. With every step, explained what she was doing and the products she was using in my hair. It has been a week and my hair feels so silky you would think I got a keratin treatment. I'm definitely going to keep going here and plan on seeing Stacy every time! read more

Loved my experience at this salon! Wanted to get color in my hair for the first time and I was a little hesitant at first, but Ana made me feel at ease and helped me figure it out. Love my look and I'm looking forward to my next visit! read more

The salon is great! Especially if you have natural hair! This is my 5th time getting my hair done at this salon and I must say AnaMaria never disappoints. I have very thick natural hair and everytime I leave out of this salon I feel like a million bucks! I My hair has even lasted in this summer heat :-) !!!! read more

I walked into the Edge Salon about a month and a half ago without an appointment to get a trim and to add some color. I have given up on hair salons because of the long wait times and high prices. Upon walking into the Edge, I was greeted immediately and sat down for a chat about the look I was going for. Ana Maria was a gem and gave me the exact look I was going for. The entire staff is very pleasant, professional and welcoming. I definitely enjoyed the goodie bag of samples that I received and will definitely be returning to the salon to purchase some of the recommended products and getting another trim. I will say that I was thoroughly pleased with my style but I did pay a good penny for it. read more

Thank you Racquel for providing me with amazing color to start the new year. Having natural locked hair can be quite boring at times, so a little color really helps to change things up. I was a little nervous when I saw my hair turn beach blonde, but you assured me that the color would come out just right in the end. I have been getting comments all day on my color. Thanks again read more
