The parking at Salon Zoma is a problem right now. The lot is always full of construction trucks, and it is not very big and hard to navigate. I've been trying to find a stylist in MD for over a year. I think I've finally found one! I have short hair, somewhere between a pixie cut and something a little softer. I wanted to keep a little length, but get rid of the wispy ends and weight that had grow into my hair since my last cut. Jane at Salon Zoma did a WONDERFUL job. An Aveda Salon in Silver Spring = the happiest girl in the WORLD!!! Jane is my new go to girl for a beautiful cut and color! It's walkable from the Metro and the bus is right there. There are a lot of great finds in Silver Spring and Salon Zoma is a GEM! Full array of Aveda products and VERY reasonable (dare I say cheap) prices. If you want to pay about $30-40 less than other salons in the area (Bethesda/DC) for FANTASTIC cut and color then Salon Zoma is the place to go and Jane is the woman to go to! read more

Salon Zoma offers competitive pricing, decent parking options, relaxing studio, and uses Aveda products (my favorite). My main two complaints are that you have to tip with cash and that on two occasions (different stylist each time), my semi-permanent hair coloring didn't actually cover my roots. In both situations though, the salon handled it well. In one situation, when I was already out of town when I saw my roots were visible (and this was only three days after they'd been colored), they comped my next color appointment. The second time, they fixed it the same afternoon. As for stylists, definitely go to Christine. As someone else said, she really does have hands of magic. read more

I love Salon Zoma and Fasika, the salon's owner. She is totally amazing and inspired me to chop my long hair to a pixie cut. She's my go-to stylist and I've recommend three other people to the salon who have all LOVED their hair cuts -- including my neighbor who took one look at my hair and left the stylist she had been seeing for the last ten years and my 65 year old father who was visiting from out of town. Although the place appears good for women haircuts, it is poor for mens'. The staff is friendly and the interior is nice despite the shady look of the building from afar. But they do not know how to cut men's hair. It is bad, not just mediocre. The cut lacks shape, it reminds me of what child would get. To make it goofier, the stylist cut a half inch gap around my ears. If you a man, stay away. You are better off going to the HairCuttery because although it would be a mediocre cut, at least they know how to cut mens' hair. read more

GREAT GREAT GREAT haircuts from stylists with zeroooo personality. So if you're okay sitting in awkward silence the whole time you're getting your hair done, it's fine. I guess you can't have everything.... The other thing I always found to be a bit sketchy was lack of clarity on charges. Every time I went to pay my bill, it had suddenly jumped $10-30 -- huh?? To be clear: I'm fine paying $60 for a haircut....but don't say $45 at the start and then run my card for $60, $70 at the end of it! I'd suggest trying to push up front to ask about pricing and then don't let them charge you any more than that. I recently moved from the area, but I went to Zoma the whole time I lived nearby because they really are VERY skilled stylists, I just always sort of dreaded going in. I'm new to the area and was looking for a good, inexpensive hair salon. I usually prefer AVEDA salons due to their products and generally good services. I was very pleased with my experience at Salon Zoma. Jane, my stylist, did an excellent job. I have very curly hair which usually frizzes when stylist try to give me a blow out, but Jane did a wonderful job and did not even need a flat iron for the finishing touches. I have been to several AVEDA salons across the country, but so far, have found this one to be the best for the quality of service available at a good price. I will definitely be back! read more

I got my hair cut by Christina Escobar. I cannot express how sad and unhappy I am. I Could not even attempt to do a photo due to my hair was so uneven and could not styled after my cut. It looks like Edward scissor hand had a go at my head. I had a long conversation after consult just to make sure my cut would be good. if you cannot cut hair then, say so. I called back to ask for the hair cut refund. she advaded me and never got on the phone. I did not want to make a seen in front of the other clients. I could have but did nothing. that would have been bad for business., why am I thinking about your established when you have wronged me. I did not ask for the perm refund I asked for the cut refund. I have to get it fixed some kind of way. So unprofessiona. you cut my hair wrong and then won't rectify. I should have know when she told me about another lady hair incident. I had a perm and cut. I had planned to return for color but I can't trust this place. Unprofessional and not reliable. I will make inquires about her cosmotology license. read more

I went to Gianni last month to get a haircut. And by haircut, I mean pretty much most of my hair cut off. Gianni did an awesome job! I'm so happy with my results. She took time to consult with me about what I wanted and to see what products would work best for my hair. I definitely want to come back to get my hair straightened by her. (I am African American with natural, tightly curled/coiled hair). I have received so many compliments on my hair since she has cut it. The ONLY reason I didn't give 5 stars is because, due to it being an Aveda salon, they didn't really have hair products for my hair type for styling. So, I did style my hair at home, but that wasn't a big deal. My main purpose (for me) in that visit was to get the right cut and Gianni gave me exactly what I wanted. Fasika is my stylist. She does black people's hair excellently. I have been to several salons in my life and she is the best hair stylist I have ever had. People compliment me on my hair every time she does it and several people have asked me for her number. She is very personable, calls you by your name and maintains a good relationship with her customers. The salon itself is high class, very clean, and modern. One of the best salons I've been to. I've been looking for a salon in Silver Spring for the longest time and found the pretty exceptional reviews here, so I decided to give it a try. It was awesome! The only reason why I gave it 4 stars was because my stylist was behind and I had to wait about 20 minutes. She was very apologetic and since I didn't have much to do anyways, I didn't mind waiting. Christina is absolutely fantastic!!!! I have been her client for well over 7 years; this was the best decision I've ever made. As an African-American with curly, wavy and thick hair, I am very particular about my hair, specifically who I allow to do it. Christina has always delivered above and beyond my expectations. As I have made several hair transitions (layers, bob, short pixie cut), she has successfully guided me through those transitions to ensure that the styles fit the shape of my face and were easy to manage in-between appointments. She is just an all around fantastic stylist. I went from going to African-American salons where I would spend countless hours in the salon just to be unsatisfied, to spending 1-1.5 hours max (the later only if I have to sit under the dryer) with Christina, coming out with great results. When I first started going to her, my hair was extremely damaged; within a short period of time, she had my hair back to normal (healthy, full and vibrant). I have recommended many friends and colleagues of different ethnicities to Christina, all who have raved about her professionalism, expertise and precision. With all of my hair styles over the years, I literally have had people stopping me randomly asking me who does my hair; in fact, one woman stopped me one day on the metro and is now a regular client of Christina's. Christina is very talented and cutting-edge! She also has a keen ability to be able to listen to her customers and deliver exactly what they are seeking. I went to this salon twice to see Latoya. I had a short hair cut that I wanted trimmed. The first time the trim was good, nothing great but not bad. The second time I asked for "only a little bit of length off, with a little bit of the high/low style that's trendy now, and not a lot of layers." She cut my hair up to my chin with massive stacking in the back! The top layers were only a couple of inches long! And to top it off, the length was lopsided (not in the cute trendy way). I had to go back to have that fixed. I asked very politely if she could fix it, but she acted like I was crazy and didn't even put the cape over me. There was hair everywhere when I got home! I have been visiting other salons to help fix it as it grows out, but that has been quite a long process! read more

After moving to DC recently, it was hard to find a place nearby that gave good men's cuts. I finally found Zoma and when Jane cut my hair, it was exactly like I wanted it, and even better than where I used to get it cut at home. Jane's attention to detail was amazing; a couple times I thought to myself, "this looks pretty good," then she would come back to that spot and make it look even better. The mood is calming in the salon, and though there is conversation, it's not overwhelming like some places. Even the shampooing was wonderful! I would definitely recommend Jane to anyone and the rest of the staff seemed to be doing good work while I was in there. read more

I came here to get highlights and a trim. Christina was my hairdresser. I told her that I wanted to match my dark roots (light brown) to the rest of my hair color (blonde). She insisted on using color and told me that I would get the same effect as bleach. After coloring and blow drying my hair, the roots were clearly still very dark. However Christina insisted that is was the right color. She said that I could go home, and come back later so she could "fix it" if I still didn't like it. I went home and was totally unsatisfied with my root color. It was almost unchanged from the original color. I went back to Christina two weeks later, and she did highlights with bleach. After rinsing out the bleach, she dried the front strands of my hair and asked if the color was ok. At this point, after spending a total of 3.5 hours with her (2 hours first time and 1.5 hours second time), I said yes because it was in fact lighter. Mind you I was only able to see a portion of the work she had done since the rest of the hair was wet. She then told me that if I wanted to get the rest of my hair dried, I could sit under a dryer because she had another client waiting. I have never heard of this in my life before, and was shocked that she said this especially after messing up my hair in the first place. I got up, gave her a tip and left the salon (lucky for me it was about 50 degrees outside). In my opinion, this behavior was very rude and the work was totally unprofessional. My roots are closer to the color of the rest of my hair, but still at least a shade darker. I do not plan on ever going back to Zoma salon again and do not recommend the experience to anyone else. read more

Staff was less than friendly. Now I don't love having to make fake conversation with people, but the stylist never even introduced herself and probably spoke a total of 3 sentences to me in total. I also felt like she was taking out some anger on my hair, I literally have a bruise on the back of my head from her ripping at it while blow-drying it. My best friend and I went on a mission today to find a place to get haircuts. We are both military and I am getting treated at Walter Reed so I am not very familiar with the area. At first we ended up in DTSS but I am not willing to pay $85 bucks for a haircut (before tip!) We had given up and were on our way back to base when she noticed Zoma Salon (we were passing up all the Dominican salons because that was not our hair texture) Anyway, Zoma was fantastic! Good price $40 for a cut and style and they were able to fit us right in. All the girls were friendly and stylish (I know it doesn't matter but it always scares me when you walk into a salon and the stylists are looking a mess). I got the BEST shampoo I have ever had from the girl who also works the front desk. Then CHRISTINA cut both my friend and I's hair. As soon as my friend sat down Christina had an idea for her hair which looked amazing..my friend and her husband are completely happy with her hair. I hadn't had a hair cut in almost three years (I know terrible) and she did WONDERS with my hair...its so healthy looking and she made sense of the terrible layers I had gotten the last time I had it cut. The salon is nice enough looking, and it was easy to make an appointment. I was seated promptly with no waiting, which was much appreciated. Christina cut my hair. I'm not much one for talking during a cut, but she was so quiet and uncommunicative it felt awkward and a little uncomfortable. The cut wasn't awful, but it wasn't great and I found the layers to be rather lopsided. I tried to even it out at home later, but ended up going somewhere else to fix it. My encounter with the stylist was so cold that I did not feel comfortable returning there. Other people seem to have had a good experience, so maybe it was just an off day. read more

This is the first time I've been to this salon - thought I would try it because it is within walking distance of home. I had an appointment on Saturday. My stylist asked me what I wanted, and because I already have a short, pixie cut, I said that I wanted it "cleaned up a little". She cut my hair at lightning speed, and didn't ask me anything more (do you want it above the ears, how much length do you want taken off, etc). My hair is way too short and while the prices here are reasonable ($40 for a cut), I certainly did not leave the salon happy. read more

She showed NO interest in helping me or giving me some recommendations to treat my hair; I was treated in such a terrible way that I decided to leave and go somewhere else. I have been going to Salon Zoma since they have opened. The owner Faskia is great! I have naturally curly hair and I find it hard to find a stylist who can blow dry and flat iron my hair well. Fasika takes her time and makes sure that it is straight. I always get complements on my hair and have recommended the salon to a number of friends. read more

My hair can be difficult for most people because they're not used to the coarse, superthick texture. But Fasika did a great job and took off so much volume without giving me ridiculous amount of layers (which is what most people do). Plus the price is great. I had my hair cuts and hair colors by Cristina. I love her cuts more than the color. She is good but both times her colour application was very messy. I had color stains on my face. She never care about leaving color marks on your forehead or even face and it matters alot. But her cuts are great. I tried jane for the hair color third time and found her more professional in color application and one to one relationship. As blow dry is not included in root touch ups...she did offered me to use one of the automatic dryer so I dnt have to leave the salon wet headed. Thinking to give her a try for cut as well next time. As they use aveda colors...and their place is clean, I will keep going there. read more
