Having just moved to the DC area, I took a chance on Plane Jane, and I'm delighted to report that Amanda gave me one of the best haircuts I've ever had. I asked for a '20s-style bob, and she did a thorough consultation before getting started. I had booked a silent appointment, which she respected, but she checked in periodically to make sure I was satisfied with how the haircut was proceeding. It's now been over a week since the cut and my hair still looks great and is easy to style. I'll definitely be going back!

You can tell that they have a lot of regulars and good stylists.

My friend took me across the street to Salon Gerard to fix it, and despite me not having an appointment, Chenelle stayed late to trim my hair to fix the unevenness and cliffs and expertly calmed me down as I was still in shock. I really miss my long hair, but Chenelle styled it so well that I was not completely distraught and even gave me tips on how to preserve the blowout. She's not only highly talented as a stylist but also incredibly empathetic and reassuring in stressful situations. I would recommend her to everyone.

While this place has received beaucoup de stars, I hope this review will give a realistic view of the other side of the coin and save someone else from the mess that I experienced there at the end. I went about half a dozen times to Gerard. Nice person, and runs on schedule. Also, he does not push products. The success of the cuts was unpredictable, ranging from very good to okay. Very disappointing my last time. I specifically asked for (and not for the first time) LONG layers only. I had just spent a year growing out a bad layering job. Gerard agreed. But I walked out that day with short and medium layers (since verified by two other stylists) in a cut that was not attractive. Having to do another long grow-out is very disappointing, and it was expensive to get it fixed elsewhere (more below). I must also warn consumers. that I was disappointed in the color work. Color is an area in which Gerard seems to have less experience. That's ok, but perhaps a person should know their weaker areas and not do that service let alone charge a premium rate. At my first visit, he asked for help from a colleague to decide what to do with my color. That should have tipped me off.. After that first time, something was usually off with my color--e.g., it wasn't washed out fast enough and and came out too dark. BTW, this salon refused to order or use Performance Plus, a standard product used in upscale salons as part of color service for people who are sensitive to hair dye. Throwing in some Equal sweetener is NOT the same. The final time I went, both the cut and the color were very disappointing. and Chaos refused to do anything about it. You would hope they would express concern, apologize, and try to work with you on some kind of fix. In fact, they didn't even bother to call me back, I had to call back, and the receptionist gave me their response. Nice, I am now seeing someone who is at the same price level as Chaos--but he has MANY more years' experience with cutting and coloring hair, and is better on service. I advise that you find out how long your stylist at Chaos has been doing what he (or she) does. Make sure he listens. Don't automatically believe what you hear. You may risk a disappointment that could last many months. read more

AMAZING....Kale is a life saver!! This is my hair saga... I moved to Bethesda this summer and have been searching for a decent salon for months. I have a very straight, fine, hair which looks best in a well executed bob. I went to a reputable salon downtown and asked for a sexy bob with caramel highlights....250 dollars later i walked out with a red fo-hawk. Terrified and with little hair to spare i went to another salon for a fix....100 dollars later i left with a super polished Nancy Grace..bangs n all ...i started shopping for hats. The next salon "fine hair expert" razored a bald spot in my head and charged me 150 bucks to do it. Hopeless and hairless (i lost about 5 inches of hair and $500 in hideous haircuts) i called Chaos...i had nothing to lose...literally OMG....at last!!!! Kale was amazing!!! He asked, he listened, he thought, and gave me a great haircut covering up the mistakes of the 4 months worst hair months of my life. I didn't think it was possible because my hair was soooo short and the bald spot...ehhh but he pulled it off. I was really self conscious about how short my hair has gotten but after my visit to Chaos, I've been getting compliments non stop for the past 2 weeks .....from strangers so it's not in comparison. Best of all....he didn't charge me an arm and a leg. I love this salon and they have a customer for as long as we're in the area or drivable distance. just plain AWESOME!! read more

I have had the BEST experience at Chaos. Everyone was warm and welcoming. Love the ambiance and the entire feel of the salon. Mindy was my stylist and was fabulous! I asked for a dramatic cut and that's exactly what I got. I simply showed her a photo of the cut I wanted and in 30 min.s...she was basically done. The rest of the time was just styling. Keep in mind that my hair was about....4 or 5 inches PAST my shoulder and I have NEVER EVER "chopped" my hair off to the point that I can barely flat iron the back part. Plus I'm pretty particular who touches my hair period.Now I can't stop looking at my hair and I have received a ton of complements as well. Mindy made me feel more comfortable during the entire process as she knew this was a dramatic cut for me. Oh yeah....might I add that I called the studio at 11 a.m. just to check availability and pricing (not thinking I was actually going to go through with the cut) and the next thing I knew, I was in by 11:30 a.m and out by 12:30. I have been trying for a year and a half to find someone in the area who can do a decent pixie cut and let me tell you, it has been a struggle. Yesterday I tried yet another salon where I paid 90 bucks for a hack-job of a hair cut. My husband listened to me complain for a good hour until he got fed-up and found Suzanne on the internet. I called Chaos this morning and they were able to fit me in within the hour. I showed up at the salon nervous and embarrassed of my mushroom head. Suzanne looked at pictures of what I wanted, then looked at me, and saw what she had to work with. She was extremely professional and efficient and I immediately gave a huge inward sigh of relief that I had finally found a stylist that actually listened to me and could translate what I wanted into a haircut. Not only did she give me an amazing cut, but she did so while fixing someone else's mistake. She is amazing and I refuse to go to anyone else from now on. Thank you Suzanne!!! read more

I called on Thursday to have my hair done on the following Friday, and I was lucky to get Min. She gave me honest opinion that I don't need to change the length of my hair but just do a modification on the pointed edge and get more layers to form a better shape and add a bit volume. It comes out really nicely! I waited until the second day after washing my hair at home, without a blow-dry, to see the result as a basis for this review. Still, it looks beautiful! In my mind this is what you get from a really good saloon job. A good haircut does not rely on blow dry; my hair looks gorgeous because of the way it was cut not because of blow dry on hair product. I'll definitely recommend Min -- she is a master at her craft. Surely, I'll go again. read more

Ask for Min, She's amazing! She knows what she's doing and knows how hair works. She makes recommendations for me as well when I want to try something new! I've been going to her for years and after she shutdown her own salon and started working at Chaos, naturally I followed her here. I drive 40 minutes each way to get my haircut done by her if that says anything. It's a cool looking place decor wise but that's just the bonus on top. I always come out out of there feeling great because my hair looks great! Appointments are always on time...never overbooked causing me to wait after I arrive. If there was one thing I wish, it'd be that they were open on the weekends. read more

Awesome really hip salon. Last time, I took my niece along and they were playing "Edward Scissorhands" (an example of their quirky, chic atmosphere). I got my cut from Toni and she was really insightful about my hair itself -- the shaft, the way it will grow out. I would highly recommend going to them and the salon won "Best Blowouts" in Allure magazine a few years ago. Minus 1-star because although they do great if you have a picture or a clear image of what you want, if you don't, they tend to make your hair a bit on the choppy, punk side. read more

I have been going to Chaos/Suzanne now for almost a year and am so happy. Been going to mike for haircuts for several years -- from White Flint to Lux, and now (hurray!) to his own salon. Cool atmosphere, good value, incredible cut. Like everyone else, I've had a number of stylists over the years, and I trust Mike more than any of them!
