I have been going to Massosport for about 3 years and most recently have been seeing Tarika about 2x/month for sports massage. I do regular strength training - particularly deadlifting and benching - and I'm hyperflexible, so 1) my muscles are constantly tight, and 2) normal stretching doesn't always do much for me. Tarika is, hands down, the best massage therapist I've ever been to (and I've been to many!) in terms of both working out and identifying both temporary and ongoing issues/soreness. She uses multiple tools along with manual therapy - including cupping, massage gun, and a graston tool - depending on what's needed. She'll also identify tightness/inflammation that I'm not even aware of, meaning I can tend to it before it gets worse. If you're getting to a certain age like me (40+) and are at least moderately active, I'd highly recommend going to Massosport for regular sports massage. Tarika quickly and effectively identified the spots on my back that needed slow, deliberate work. As others have mentioned, this is not a "touchy-feely" massage (unless I guess you want it to be). If you want to put in the work, your therapist will put in the work. And you won't have to worry about them following a pre-scripted routine if there are specific areas that need the most attention; the massage is very interactive that way. Anywho, Tarika was great. Upon arrival I noticed how calming the space is. I got there a few minutes early but I was quickly greeted by Ana. I filled out some forms and answered a few of Ana questions. She asked me what I wanted to focus on and how much pressure would I like. I walked into the room and I was instantly calmed by the music. Ana told to get comfortable and hop on the table once I was ready. Ana stepped out so I could make myself comfortable, once back in the to she asked me if I would like an essential oil. Had a great massage by Ana. The entire process was amazing. I signed up for an appointment online, which was easy. I was able to get in to see Ana for a 75 minute massage the day after I made the appointment - which was great as I was having some pain in my feet from running. Ana chatted with me about my pain issues prior to starting the massage. When I mentioned that I had foot pain from running, she quickly (after some additional questions) diagnosed that my two weeks of running hills on an off-camber surface was contributing to my pain and that my tendons were most likely rebelling (her diagnoses agreed with my own research of the problem as well). Ana spent a considerable amount of the 75 minutes massaging my feet and calves - which was great. She used the right amount of pressure and helped me breathe through some of the areas that were extremely sensitive. The entire massage was wonderful - but I really appreciate the time she spent on my problem areas. Two days later I was running without any pain in my foot. It was magical! I have had back / shoulder and neck problems for decades and have done multi disciplines to alleviate the pain with varying success . I was hit by a car as a pedestrian and had multiple surgeries and right after that COVID-19 happened. Needless to say I was an especially wreck when I went. I had Derrick as my therapist for 90min. He is extremely knowledgeable and made sure that my comfort level was ok. I can take a lot of pressure on my neck and shoulders but less in other places. Often when there is pain the body is compensating from other parts of the body. I had tightness, bundles of nerves and tangled fascia . I did not know my lower back and my pelvic area area where this tight and painful . Derrick was able to explain how the way I sit and how long I sit for in a day contribute to that discomfort. We got to a tight bunch of muscles under my arm- apparently 6 muscles meet up there- and I could feel it actually releasing. It is important to know what may be causing Iran's I am. Or me aware now. The way I rotate my shoulders forward which is not something I was are of. have not felt this good is years. I am going back and I may even be able to exercise again after that. It is various modes that he expertly applied depending on what he came across . There are some areas that just don't feel good but you have to go through it while the majority feels amazing. Derrick clearly explained what was happening and what I was felling. Like the tingling and numbing from a nerve in my neck- I do this to myself all the time- was blood returning back ! Parking was easy for me because I went to a Sunday not sure how it would be during the week. Campbell at Massosport gave me one of the best treatments I've ever had, asking me to stretch into it at times, preparing me for the more painful parts. I was so in need of this treatment. These guys specialize in sports or similar bodywork -- really free up the muscles so they can reset and heal and work, same for connective tissue, etc. Listening carefully. Highly recommended -- I'll be back soon. Hope to extend from the 60 min I purchase to 90 min. The rates are very reasonable for high skill bodywork in DC. The setting is wonderful too: this is a pleasant, simple treatment office with bodywork and chiropractic care, relaxing tunes, super clean, everyone friendly and professional. I am so impressed with Massosport. I've had intermittent massages, some at very fancy spas, but my massage at Massosport was 100x better. First, it is very conveniently located and the facility is clean and decorated in a fun way. Eden at the reception area was so friendly & helpful. As for the actual massage, Lawrence is INCREDIBLE. The following is meant to provide feedback for management, not individual masseuses. I found several areas of improvement were needed at Massosport Massage. I picked Massosport over any other massage business because I had expected a sports massage, not massage for relaxation or tension, but I unfortunately this was not the case even though I booked a sports-focused massage. The massage was not particularly helpful for improving athletic performance, increasing flexibility or relieving tension. In addition, there were basic intake and customer treatment practices that were absent that could improve the consumer and staff experience. To begin with, the intake form provided by the receptionist prior to my appointment did not inform my session, nor did the receptionist provide a copy of my responses to the masseuse prior to my session. The form asked for personal information like illnesses, sport and fitness activity, areas of concern and desired pressure, but these factors were not integrated into the massage. In addition, before the massage I communicated verbally to the masseuse that it would be great for them to focus on 3 areas (shoulders, scalp, legs) during a 1 hour long session, but the masseuse only focused on one (my shoulders). I found this odd because I indicated I am a runner on the intake form, and the business is supposed to focus on spirts-related muscle work. After spending 55 minutes on my shoulders, the masseuse worked on ONE leg for less than 5 minutes and never worked on the other leg before the session was over. If there was not enough time to work on all three areas of my body during a one hour session, the masseuse could have asked me which area they should prioritize, or just prioritized my legs since I am a runner and Massosport DC is supposed to specialize in sports-related treatment. I was also surprised to have the masseuse devote an unequal amount of time to each leg, as balance and equity amongst pair body parts can have huge impacts on sports performance and your risk of injury. The masseuse also never once asked about whether the pressure they were using was appropriate or how they should further tailor the massage treatment, which ultimately resulted in no tension being relieved in the muscle groups they worked on. After the massage, I was disappointed to receive very limited feedback about the level of tension or presence of injuries in the muscle groups worked, and did not receive suggestions as to what stretches I could do at home to improve muscle function before my next appointment. Lastly, in the process of rescheduling my appointment, the receptionist failed to mention that there was a price discrepancy between my original appointment (with an intern) and my rescheduled appointment (with a different therapist). The resulting appointment was 1.5x the original price. At $134 the appointment price point was set extremely high for the quality of massage and relief I experienced both during and after the treatment. As this is a business with FTE and not independent contractors, I believe the aforementioned factors are things that would be easy for the business to train its employees to do consistently with each appointment.
