Five stars. I came here on a suggestion from a co-worker to try it out since his wife makes great pasteles & Puerto Rican foods (according to him lol!). Anyway, back on to the subject at hand. Wat Get restaurant is basically a walk in and take out place. There are seat located outside for dining at the place. Now on to the service...the owners were very friendly and the plate that I ordered was made in a snap! Quick service. Auurite!! The prices were pretty reasonable for a plate lunch type place. About under the $10.00 range. I ordered the All G plate. The food...the All G plate included a pastele, gandule rice, bacalao salad, and a scoop of mac salad. I thought all of the foods were really great and delicious. The mac salad was a bit bland, however, but the other foods (especially the bacalao salad) were super ono! Parking is right in front of the establishment, so that's not a problem at all. Just drive right up. I would highly recommend Wat Get to anyone who has a craving for quick, fast, and ono Puerto Rican foods while in the Waipahu district area on the 'Island of Oahu' (some of you Yelpers out there catch get my little quote there. Hahaha!). Enjoy! read more

The rave reviews brought us here, so we decided to give Wat Get a shot. We shared The Ultimate plate and Pastele Stew. While the portions are definitely generous, TASTE is pretty lacking... While service was pleasant from the owner and his wife, the food had a few misses...stingy on the bacalao in the Bacalao Salad, the banana "masa" in the Pastele was pretty bland...the Gandule Rice was okay but barely with any gandules??? Kinda disappointing up to this point. Wat Get's saving grace for me was their Pastele Stew which was very flavorful, and something I would come back for. Here's a hot tip...Go get a loaf of Samoan Hot Bread From Tammy's nearby, grab some of Wat Get's Pastele Stew, and have yourself a Samo-Rican Sloppy Joe! ALOHA!!! Wat get? No matter how often I say "wat get" I just can't come to terms to the grammatically incorrectness of that phrase LOL!! Nonetheless, WAT GET Kitchen is deep in the heart of Wai-pah-whoo!! Once you turn onto Hikimoe Street just look for sunshiny-yellow building. Let me lie and say that I'm an expert when it comes to Puerto Rican food. Truth is, I am not and I wasn't introduced to this food until 10 years ago and which time I had gandule rice and pastele for the first time. Not just any pastele though...a friend of a friend "imported" pastele from Brooklyn, NY via a checked bag packed with dry ice to the 808. It must be good (or so I thought, for someone to special request a pastele from Brooklyn, NY all the way to the islands). THAT was my first impression. My second was, "meh...really?" Enter Wat Get Kitchen! Since that "meh" experience I've shied away PR food only because I didn't want to offend them by refusing their famed pastele. But guess what? Pastele isn't the only food on the menu. I'm like another reviewer when she mentions not liking the texture of the pastele. I do like bacalao salad here with the pickled and less offensive onion, the freshly shredded and well seasoned cod, with the slightly and not overly acidic seasoning (with a hint of sweet) drizzle over chopped romaine. The only thing missing would have been generous slices of avocado but then again, that's just me. The PIKA BOWL is another fave of mine here which is a pastele (minus the "mush") stew on top of white rice. This bowl is packed full of comfort and "love." The stew is a mixture of small dices of pork (not too much fat) married into a stew of oregano, cilantro, peppers, and "magic and love." I'm no cook but whatever is in there - it's comforting and oh so delicious! There is a kick of (mild) hotness after each bite that makes this dish a memorable one and a reason to return here. There isn't indoor seating here and if you find yourself here in the heat of the west side sun you will be HOT! There isn't much shade covering their ample barstool/counter seats outside. Who knew that deep in the heart of Wai-pah-whoo sits this hearty, soulful kitchen! So, "wat get?" read more

This is a hole in the wall and I told myself not to try it but was really craving Puerto Rican food. I went in the guy was drippin sweat and was not nice. When I asked about panadejas he didn't even look at me but said "up there" referring to the menu above me. So I ordered 2 pastele stew filled panadejas, side gandule rice, and my kids ordered the All G pastele plate. Total was 54$ which was crazy but whatever. We had more errands to run, so I started Eating my panadejas (which I saw him pull out of the freezer so they are not fresh). The first bite was fine, the 2nd bite was cold and semi frozen. You can't serve that kind of pork to people, they can get really sick. So I pulled out the 2nd one and same thing. I opened the rice and it looked like red rice with achote. Barely any pork and no olives. The taste was not what I'm used to from authentic Puerto Rican food. I called the store and told the guy that answered which was the same guy that we encountered and he said come back and I'll heat it up. I said I'm in mililani running errands, he said go home and put it in the microwave for 45 seconds. And he kind of chuckled. For 54$ I have to heat up my own food? That sucked to top it off. Terrible food and terrible service. read more

I didn't get a chance to go to one of my fave Puerto Rican Restaurants in L.A. on my last trip and and I had a worked up craving for some fried chicken Took the fam to Waipahu to have them try something different. My dad had but not everyone else. I didn't tell them anything about it. First, they were expecting a sit down restaurant but WG is just a take out window and you can see their whole kitchen. Nicely kept, very shiny tables and equipment. I see their lettuce, fresh and green. Their work stations are well organized and can pass any health inspection. Looking over the menu we decide to get the Ultimate, the Hapa Plate and Pika Bowl#3. We were fortunate some people left the metal counter just outside the entrance to be able to sit down together. The sun was out hitting us directly but thankfully wasn't one of those hot days. Gabriel G. didn't order anything tasting everything we ordered. He can be a picky eater but nothing to pick about here as he was gobbling everything up. Mog P. and I enjoyed the food as well. She was surprised how good her first experience of Puerto Rican was. That set her on a path to try more and look for other locations. You would think with food this good why not set up a proper sit down restaurant. Then again, why fix it if it's not broken. My dad like the Pika bowl, patele over 2 scoops of white rice. Reminded me of chilli rice but this has a different flavor. I couldn't decide which I would like better because I do like both. The Hapa Plate was a good plate too. Patele over lettuce greens, 2 soops rice and their bacalao salad. I was happy to see the salad take up half the plate and still wish there was more. The dressing on the salad was sweet and refreshing and very popular enough so they can sell it $5 for a bottle. I do agree the patele does have more flavor than a tamale and this one tasted great. The Ultimate is the the Hapa Plate but with mac and patele stew included atop the patele. That just made it more enoyable to eat as you really get a stronger impact of the flavors. Overall, a wonderful break from the good food this rock in the Pacific gets to offer, Puerto Rican food. A taste from super friendly owners, Cory and crew, worth coming back for when you want something different, fresh, tasty and fairly priced. read more

Wat Get Kitchen - Updated hours of operations - Puerto Rican Near Me - Waipahu, Hawaii

Ok, let me tell you about this place. This place called, Wat Get Kitchen is located in the back of Waipahu Times Supermarket and next to the Bus terminal. Luckily, a co-worker of mine told me that because I got a little lost following directions on my phone. The streets that I was told to turn on had no visible street signs. Awe! Wat Get street signs or Wat? Although I didn't see the street signs, I went with my "gut" and turned anyway. I finally arrived at Wat Get Kitchen. When I pulled into the parking lot, all the stalls were full. I told myself...Wat Get more parking or Wat? Omg...first I cannot see any street signs, then I cannot see any parking. Agh! What next? Anyway, I did find street parking across the street behind of a Times. So, I walked over to fellow Yelper and my BFF Cheryl G. standing outside of Wat Get Kitchen waiting for me. We walked into the little opening of the kitchen. To my surprise, it was just a take out window. I looked at her with astonishment...Wat Get somewhere to sit and eat or Wat? We started to laugh. Little did she know about my little mishaps with finding this place and parking. Anyway, we ordered our food and ate on stools in front of the kitchen. We both ordered the Ultimate as recommended by Emi. Thanks, Emi. This plate came with a pastele, gandule rice, pastele stew, bacalao salad and a scoop of macaroni salad. The pastele, stew and rice was...unbelievable! I haven't had good Puerto Rican food in years. The bacalao and mac salad were...alright. So, I hope you enjoyed my story. Hopefully, your experience is better then mine. I will be back, but this time I'll be better prepared read more

Love this little Puerto Rico Hawaiian Influenced family owned restaurant, serving up Pasteles, which are plantain (green bananas) pork patties, with spicy meat sauce, and delicious mango and guava empanadillas. It is a small take out style place with 5-6 people bench outside seating. The owner and his wife greeted us as we walked into the store. They were really nice and friendly. The ultimate plate serves up good size Pasteles, which is similar to a meatloaf made with plantains and meat. It taste delicious, creamy, and meaty. It don't taste sweet. Green plantains doesn't have much of a sweet taste, & could be even spicier. The plate completes with yellow rice & a salad with salty shredded dry fish. Everything was delicious. We sat outside to eat, and the owner came out to check on us to make sure everything was OK. We asked him to suggest a sweet dessert, and he recommended the seasonal mango Empanadillas made in-house. The mango Empanadillas were delicious mango and cream cheese filled half-moon shape pastry, about the size of my palm. It came out fresh and hot. It was creamy and sweet. The owner brought them out to us to enjoy. We loved the food, and service, and would definitely come back again! read more

Little hole in the wall place I discovered in Waipahu right behind Times. They sell Puerto Rican lunch plates. I ordered the hapa plate (Gandule rice, Patel and bacalao salad. It was very tasty. I especially liked the bacalao salad. Very refreshing. Place to go as an alternative when you can't make your own. I haven't tried their panadillas. The sad thing is they only do cash and I don't always carry cash or I would go more often. It would also be nice if they had tostones and maduro plantains. The couple were very friendly! read more

Hands down my go to place for PuertoRican food. I'm a regular here and there's a good reason why. This place is sooooo good!! A little hole in the wall place right behind Times in Waipahu. Enough parking to grab your food and go! There's some outdoor seating, but probably too hot to sit outside. You can place an order and call ahead. By the time you get there your food is ready to go! They take cash and credit card. There have a variety of plates you can order! The food never fails. Their consistent with the goodness. They give generous portions in my opinion. I hope this place never goes away because I'd be force to make my own Pastele's and Gundule rice and nobody got time fo'dat! Wat get, get some bomb food! read more

Been awhile since our last visit here! Got the Pikibowl and the ultimate Pastele Plate! Always overwhelmed when deciding what to order. Pastele Stew bowl was larger than expected! Ordered with gandule rice instead of white rice too! Generous portions definitely with the price! Unfortunately road construction is going on but you can still access from Waipahu Street. Just follow detour signs. Highly recommend checking in if you're ono for Puerto Rican food! There's no inside dining. Chairs and counter outside if you can handle Waipahu weather. Location: They are located in Waipahu off Waipahu Depot Road in an older shopping plaza behind Times. There is a few parking spots in front of the shop. Food: The food was delicious! We got an ultimate pastele plate, pastele stew panadilla and cream cheese filled panadilla. The ultimate plate had grandule rice, pastele, pastele stew and bacalao salad. The stew wasn't thick but there was a lot of meat. The pastele was flavorful. The rice was tasty and the salad was unique. Price: The prices were reasonable. The ultimate plays cost $10.50, the pastele panadilla cost $5 and the dessert panadilla cost around $5 for 3 pieces. Ambiance: It's a hole in a wall take out counter. There is sitting off to the side. You can see inside the shop as they get your food ready. Service: The service was fast. My plate lunch was fast but the panadilla takes a few minutes. The staff was friendly. Overall, I enjoyed the food and would definitely be back. read more

Qas referred to this place by a friend after I had gone to another puertorican restaurant. It's a takeout counter. Nowhere to eat. Ample parking. The portions are large and the food is great. A hapa plate and 3pc panadilla cost me $18. I have yet to learn to make puertorican food but I base the taste off my great grandmothers cooking, and this is a+. I'm more of a Baker if anything and would probably suggest mixing the cream cheese and guava together for the panadilla filling. I tried one and in one bite would get more of the guava, and the next bite nothing but cream cheese. Nonetheless, still good. The couple running the counter are very nice and friendly. Will definitely be back. Oh! And their sign says they also cater!! read more

Love this place! I'm a huge fan for pasteles and gandule rice. Hubby had to get a hair cut from next door and decided to eat right after. Luckily he's been here before and I was familiar with the food. The owner is the sweetest guy ever. I was pregnant and he made such great conversation about my baby girl. Such great energy from him. The food is delicious. If you don't have a big appetite, order the sides; side order Patele with a scoop of gandule rice. If you're more of a stew person the patele stew with a little bit of rice in the stew is a meal on its own. However, if you have a huge appetite get the bigger plates. You won't be disappointed. Be warn, it could be a bit of a wait for your food depending if the owner is by himself or his wife is there helping. Again, you won't be disappointed, just be patient and you'll get your patele. :) read more

We've always seen this place every time I get my haircut next door, but we just never bothered to walk in and see what it was. This time around, we figured we'd give it a try. All I've got to say is, LAVA FLOW!!! FAIR WARNING - This place only makes a certain amount every day, so it's best to call in before heading out there. Or you will be disappointed and waiting another 30 minutes! We got lucky enough to get the last pastele for that hour, and pretty much halfway through the barrel of pastele Stew. Haha. Upon walking in, we get greeted with a hello and we begin to take a look at their menu. Someone recommended the Lava Flow to us, so I already knew I wanted to give that a try! And let me tell you, it did NOT disappoint! Lava Flow is pretty much like a Loco Moco. Glandule rice coving the bottom of the plate, one brick of pastele over the rice, topped with 2 eggs (your way), and here's the best part, they top it off with Pastele Stew ALL OVER! OMG! Winnahzzzzzzz!! It cost $15 for the plate, but it was definitely worth it. It was so much food for 2 hungry people and every single bite was worth the $15! --NOT KIDDING! This place is so fricken good, it had us wanting another plate the next day! Haha! For the LOVE OF PASTELE, this is definitely the place to go! read more

If I could explain this place it'd be a mix between Puerto Rican and Hawaiian inside of a place that's kind of like a food truck but in a building. (Maybe that's just me, idk) I'm a novice when it comes Puerto Rican and Hawaiian food, but I'm pretty good at knowing good food. Wat Get is slang for "What are you getting," ... it took me a few minutes to understand, don't judge. I ordered the Hapa plate and those delicious cream cheese and jelly balls with a sugary and soft-baked texture. The Hapa plate comes with a healthy serving of rice with pastele and a delicious salad. The panadillas, those soft baked balls of heaven, are to die for. I was going to bring one home for my wife, but I ended eating all three of them. I honestly wasn't sure if they'd be as tasty three hours later, so I decided to eat them all on the spot. Great spot, friendly folks behind the counter and wasn't too busy. I've been wanting to try Wat Get Kitchen for a while, and was excited to try things on their menu. The location is off the beaten path, so I almost couldn't find the restaurant. However, just look for the strip mall, and its located on the 1st floor, on the far right. The first thing I noticed is that this is not a sit down restaurant. Although there is some seating options outside, you order from a window. And it is cash only. I ordered their panadilla de queso, which I would compare to a deep fried empanada with mozarella. It comes with two decent sized pieces, that are pretty filling. The first few bites were delicious...the outside was crisp, the cheese in the inside was nice and hot. However, when I got to the middle of the panadilla, the cheese filling must have been rather thick because the cheese was actually cold. I also had their small salad, which included romaine lettuce, onion, cherry tomato, boiled banana, and bacalao. I didn't know bacalao was, but learned that it is codfish that is often dried or salted. On the salad, the bacalao was shredded finely, almost appearing like shredded parmesan. I never had this type of salad before, and I was pleasantly surprised! It was crunchy, salty, and overall flavorful! I would definitely come back here just for the salad because it's so unique and I would love to order it again. Pros: Free, close parking in the strip mall. Diverse menu. Friendly staff. Delicious salad. Cons: Cash only. Limited seating. There are only a few stools outside. Their panadilla was not warm all the way through. read more

I remembered one time going to this place for lunch (Albeit without some stable seating outside, and had to sit inside a car after being in the hot sun for a bit). It's a nice place to eat if you're hungry to find Puerto Rican food, considering that there's not that many in this state. I had this thing called the Patele plate, I believe...and boy was that yummy. It was different...it was delicious...and it was satisfying. Including the bacalao salad, it was a delicious meal. I might come back here in the future. Price does seem reasonable, and hopefully, I might come back to pick up something different. read more

We've been coming here for quite a while now. I think it's time for an update. It makes me sad because there are many times we find a food establishment that we love. Then over time, the service and quality goes down and down until we no longer frequent the place. THANK GOODNESS, that is NOT the case with Wat Get Kitchen!!!! Wat Get Kitchen is not just still as good as ever. But, if possible, they are even better. The service is amazing and the food is as drool-worthy as ever. Over the years, I've come to know the people here and I enjoy visiting with them just as much as I enjoy the food itself. Bianca is the Queen of Panadillas.... seriously, someone should give her a crown. And Koti... he's not just an amazing chef, but he is an artist with his food. You can tell how much delight and pride he takes in creating his mouth watering dishes. He is also the friendliest, most lovable guy... he always gives me suggestions and recipes for how to eat/serve my food. He is simply the BEST! I recently ordered a special order platter of Cranberry Cream Cheese Panadillas for a Holiday potluck with many of my fellow Yelper friends. I expected the Panadillas to come in a disposable container of some sort, but I was wrong. Very wrong. He had the most mouth watering display of deliciousness I've ever seen. First of all, he allowed me to borrow his own platter, which was glass, green leaf shaped and very festive looking. And second, the dessert Panadillas were not just coated with plain sugar as usual, he mixed it with red sugar to give it a beautiful festive look. And finally, he garnished the dish with fresh cranberries. (Pictures will be posted soon!) Koti suggested that I serve the cranberry Panadillas with an orange sherbet or sorbet to bring out the flavor. (He even lent me his scooper!) So, of course I listened. And so many people at the party commented on how well the orange complimented the cranberry. It was pure perfection. I was so pleased. I love that this place is a small independently run business... and it feels like home. I can run in really quick to pick up a plate (omg, the patele and the gandule rice, superb!) or just some cheese or stew Panadillas to eat on the go. And yum, the stew is to die for!!! I can also order large party platters for special occasions, too. Everything about this place is wonderful. I always make sure to have cash in my wallet when I know we'll be in the Waipahu area because we will most likely stop at Wat Get for a meal or a snack. Don't just read my review. Go to Wat Get and experience the awesomeness for yourself!!! Your tastebuds will thank you. read more

Finally, I made my way to Wat Get Kitchen after bookmarking this place since May 2014. Thanks to pioneering fellow Yelpers (Azadeh K., Emi H., Kathy A., Lien V., Mel B. and Cherisse E.) for pointing out this little gem of Puerto Rican yumminess that has a great homemade quality. The owners are really personable and you can feel their joy in their handcrafted food. I made my trek out to the Waipahu area to specifically try this place out without my Chinese or Filipino food eating hubby. So, armed with my Yelp App I got onto the freeway going Waianae bound. I should have gotten off at the Waikele exit to head down to Farrington Hwy but I blame myself for "rockin' out" to the beats of Janelle Monáe and missing the exit. Well, after turning around and heading through Waipahu, I eventually found this shop. There is a parking lot that you turn into this strip mall and a couple of reserved stalls that face into WGK. To the right of the entrance, you'll also see a counter and stools that you can dine at. But, when I went there, it was about high noon and it was HOT outdoors and the owners warned me about some homeless folks who may be roaming about. I sincerely appreciated their concern for my safety! Although, I didn't see anyone else outside. You only need to take a few steps forward and you're inside the shop with the menus posted above. Both the female and male owners/workers greeted me with a smile and even offered me a taste of their gandule rice as I perused their menu boards. This little shop is clean with a separated & well-maintained food prep area from the plating service area. Oooh, the gandule rice was delish with its seasoning on point and the rice was heat hot and fluffy. They serve empanadillas that are filled with savory patele stew or mozzarella cheese. There is an option for dessert panadillas that is filled with fruit and cream cheese....menu lists guava but they were out today so mango was substituted. The STARS of Wat Get Kitchen are their pateles, patele stew and gandule rice. Even after tasting the delicious gandule rice, I opted for their BNG menu selection which was a choice of patele or panadilla and bacalao salad. I mentioned that I wasn't going to stay to eat so she was sweet to NOT dress the salad to preventing wilting and she kept the foil wrapper on my patele to keep it warm. I also placed an order for dessert panadillas since she told me from the get go that today's filling flavor was mango and cream cheese. She HAD me at the mention of mango! I rushed home and greedily dug into my food... as I was dining, I received Yelp notifications regarding my check-in to WGK. I was tempted to not respond and felt like I was like a hungry dog chowing into my dish and growling "Don't bother me". Everything was delicious, fresh and served at proper temperature (even though it was a takeout). In the back of my mind, I compared my previous eating experiences of Puerto Rican cuisine. I've had the pleasure of having authentic and home made pateles from former co-workers, pateles (pasteles) at Jackie's Diner in Waimalu and pateles (pasteles) from Kalihi's Pastele Shop. WGK's plump pateles are the closest to the homemade tastes and textures that I've had before..it was filled with pork, onions, garlic, olives and peppers. Its exterior "masa" was perfectly boiled. I also ate the fresh fried mango-cheese panadillas. They were stuffed with slices of mango and cream cheese. I started to imagine them served with a scoop of B&J dulce de leche ice cream as I splashed some cold water on my face to slap myself back into reality and from dozing into a food coma. Go on...get your PASTELES PUERTORRIQUEÑOS to enjoy for yourself! I did and will probably return for more. 4.5 stars, rounded UP #383 read more

After a blissful morning at the beach we found ourselves sitting in horrendous traffic on the West side. Not #Zipnado bad, but with two large accidents on the freeway causing the back-ups, we found ourselves moving at a painfully boring snail's pace. We decided to take a break from the traffic jam and found ourselves detouring to Wat Get Kitchen in Waipahu. I rarely have the chance to eat Puerto Rican food and was excited after reading everyone's stellar reviews. I hopped out of the car and was greeted by the friendly owner who was just as sweet as other reviewers have written. I wasn't sure what to get and he gave me a little sample of gandule rice while I made up my mind. I ended up ordering the Ultimate Plate to share with my husband which comes with pastele, pastele stew, gandule rice, bacalao and mac salad. We're watching what we eat so I decided to omit the mac salad. Our food came out very quickly and we shared our food in the car. Everything in the plate melded together superbly and the star of the show by far was the pastele which was immenseful flavorful. Gandule rice was solid too, but my mother-in-law has an insane recipe which is hard to beat. There's some counter seating outside but boy it's hot in Waipahu so I'd opt to take it to the beach or park, or sit in a nice air conditioned car. They cater and I think this would be a superb choice for your next family gathering because most of us have so little Puerto Rican cuisine in our lives. *Note On Location: The mobile map pin is a little off (not Yelp's fault), so if you find yourself a little lost, just remember that it's located in the little strip mall behind Times Supermarket. read more
