I was introduced to this super cute literal "hole in the wall" by my man BFF. He's half Puerto Rican, so he was trying to "culture me" as he puts it.
Located right across the Waipahu bus depot, it's hands down the most authentic Puerto Rican food that I've tried. Make sure you bring cash though, they don't take plastic. I had to play "sugar momma" for lunch. The man BFF didn't have enough cash! The cute, older Puerto Rican man (assumed it was the owner) behind the counter told me he hoped that wasn't my boyfriend/husband, cause if so, get rid of him! I haven't laughed that hard in a while. He was super funny!
I noticed on several reviews that there were complaints about not being told about the extra charge for "all bacalao salad". I don't understand why...it's right on the menu that they charge extra for it. It's not sneaky or underhanded. It's nice that they give people the option when they place their order. Some folks wanna make that healthier choice, and opt out of the macaroni salad.
Just a word of caution...I LOVE spicy...but if you're not a fan..you might want to make sure you have a cold beverage standing by. Sometimes the pasteles have HUGE, red, whole chilis on the inside. Whew! It can get hot! But it's super delish! Their bacalao salad is spot on most times, but once in a while it can be just a tad bit salty. Same thing with their pastele stew! Most times it's super yummy...but on occasion it's a bit salty, and/or watery. Their gandule rice on the other hand has been perfect EVERY time!!! Just thinking about it as I'm writing this is making my mouth water!
If you want to try a little bit of everything, I suggest you get the Ultimate plate! It has 2 scoops of gandule rice on the bottom, a very generous sized pastele on top of the rice, then the pastele stew on top of that! It also comes with the refreshing bacalao salad, and a scoop of macaroni salad. If you don't want macaroni salad, be sure to ask for all bacalao! It costs less than a $1 more! So worth it!
This place is great for takeout, and they do catering too, according to their business cards. There is a minimal amount of bar-type seating outside. Depending on what time you go, you may be sitting in the hot sun on metal stools. あつい!(HOT)
They only have canned juices/sodas, no fountain stuff. If you're like me, and LOVE ice with your carbonated beverage, grab a drink elsewhere, or bring some ice with you to enjoy with your soda.
The only reason I don't give this top notch mom and pop shop 5 stars is because of the consistency in the flavors. Most times it's fab, but the few times I take someone new to try it out, it can be just "okay", and that doesn't leave a good impression by any means! Makes me look insane for raving about a place, that in their eyes, is mediocre at best. read more
